General Manager’s Message
Well, we made it! After 14 months of planning and 3
months of actual construction, the Virginian Dining
Room officially re-opened on April 21. Along the way
we hit a snag with the communication of our Club
House Fire Annunciator panel in the front vestibule
and the Fire panel in the mechanical room. We got
it straightened out and were able to pass all required
inspections. All is going smoothly and the team at
Billy Casper Golf has opened up to an exciting new
menu with equally impressive wine list. I encourage
you to visit the Club House and experience a great meal
at a great price in a beautiful new surrounding and
ambience. This should make it to the top of your list of
favorites, so enjoy!!
On April, 19, our Future Resident’s Task Force held a
highly successful Community Open House with more
than 30 open houses available to view. A big thank you
goes out to the residents that told their friend as word
of mouth has proven to be the most effective way of
bringing future residents to the event. A special thanks
for those volunteers who participated in making the
event successful. Let’s keep up the good work and look
forward to another success at the October event.
Now that May has finally arrived, we have a lot of
exciting things going on in our beautiful community.
Our grounds and golf course have greened up in a
spectacular fashion and Heritage Landscape Services
are in full swing for their first season of mowing. As
we settle into a fixed weekly schedule, you should be
able to see the pattern and know when they will be
servicing your area. As always, let us know if you need
any information on this.
Beginning May 1, we have a new Company, New
Horizon Security Services, who will be providing our
Gate Guard Services. Founded in 1998 they are a local,
family-owned private security firm serving the MidAtlantic region. Inc. Magazine has touted them as one
of America’s fastest growing Security firms and we are
fortunate to have them join us. Their goal is to provide
front gate services that will put us in the forefront of
the residential communities in our region and achieve
the front gate activity and control that everyone has
been asking for. They will be bringing advanced
technologies for control and reporting. Our current
manual system will transition to an automated system
in June, so you will be required to register your guests
on-line and their officers will be calling to confirm
unregistered guests. For the first month, we will be
on our existing system and you will be provided with
information about changes to come and how to comply.
Lastly, I am excited to announce the addition of Carol
Granger to our office. Many of you may know Carol
through her service at the Golf Pro Shop for more than
four years. She will be a great addition to our staff.
Hope you all have a great month and Happy Mother’s
Day in advance to all of our MOMS.

The Dominion Power Line project remains the paramount
issue effecting Heritage Hunt. Your Board of Directors
requests that all residents continue to pressure Dominion
Power with emails and letters expressing our outrage regarding their proposed location for equipment that would
bisect our community.
Board President Ken Aitchison has sent another letter to
Dominion Power that was copied on E Communicator and
is listed below for resident reference. Please send one of
your own as well. Sample letters are available at the Club
House Front desk and all current information on this issue
is detailed on the HH Website Member page. Updates will
be communicated to all residents as they are received.

At a recent meeting with Senior Staff from the State
Corporation Commission we have learned that consideration
of the proposed Dominion Power transmission line will be
significantly delayed. At this writing it appears that study
and deliberation by each of Dominion Power and the SCC will
take up to two years before a decision on the selected route
will occur.
Prior to submission to the SCC, Dominion Power will likely
(but not required) hold hearings in the Gainesville and
Haymarket areas. We will advise the HH Community as to
the dates, times and locations of these hearings if and when
revealed. It is anticipated these hearings will occur within
the next the next six to nine months. Ideally the Northern
Route will be eliminated from further consideration as a
result of these hearings and the communications submitted
to Dominion Power! However there are no guarantees the
Northern Route will be eliminated at this stage.
Until Dominion Power submits their application to the SCC
there is no definitive timeline for decision making. Indeed
there is not even an SCC file on the subject; hence
communications to the SCC, pre an SCC file number, are
allegedly not considered during SCC investigation and
deliberation.
Pending submission of an application to the SCC, HH
residents are encouraged to send letters/e-mails on the
subject directly to Dominion Power. (Please see sample
letters on the HH website; additional content for such letters
is being developed and will be shared as soon as available)
We do know that our communications are making a
difference so please do express to Dominion Power, in the
strongest terms reasonably possible, your/our strong and
steadfast opposition to the Northern Route.
Finally, and most importantly please recognize the yeoman’s
work Dick Schneider is doing as our lead in this endeavor.
He is giving above and beyond on this challenge. Thank You
Dick.
Our HH Community, and more specifically your Board is
absolutely committed to eliminating the Northern Route and
“will do whatever it takes to prevail on this most important
issue.”

Revision to the 2012 Design
Guidelines - Storage
At the 3/26/15 Board meeting, a resolution to publish a
revision to the 2012 Design Guidelines on the topic of
Storage was approved. The areas that are covered in this
Design Guideline section include: general information on
residential lot storage; permanent or long term storage;
horizontal storage bins; vertical storage bins; and
storage sheds. Also covered are required documentation
for submitting a Design Review Application and criteria
such as design, size, materials, colors, doors and hardware,
windows, roofs and location.
Revisions changes are:
• Clearly states what cannot be stored on lots exterior to
homes and garages.
• Clarifies what can be stored on lots exterior to homes and
garages and the criteria associated with that storage.
• Clarifies what can be stored on a temporary basis and the
criteria associated with that storage.
• Allows installation of vertical storage bins and the criteria
associated with such installation.
• Allows both vertical and horizontal bins to be placed on a
pad.
• Allows the construction of sheds and states the criteria
associated with such construction.
• Outlines the process for obtaining a PWC zoning permit
for sheds and bins.
The full section on Storage with all changes is available on
the HH website on the Governance page under Documents/
Design Guidelines. Print copies for review are available at
the Club House Front Desk. Residents are asked to review
and send all comments to Covenants Administrator Chelsie
Throckmorton by 5/31/15.

Helpful Plant and Tree Lists
A member of the Architectural Review Committee with
many years of experience as a Landscape Designer has
developed the following lists.
•
Deer Resistant Plants
•
Flowering Shrubs
•
Ground Covers
•
Hedge & Screen Plants
•
Trees
These lists will assist homeowners to select the right plant
or tree for the right location. These lists are available in
hard copy or via email from the Club House front desk.
They are also available on the HH website by completing
Member Login, clicking on HOA, and clicking on Utilities.
These lists DO NOT negate the need to submit Design

Pet Waste-A County Hazard
703.335.9171
Serving one neighborhood to provide quality
& attention to detail our customers
desire and deserve.
Pet waste can harm your health and the health of your pet.
Pet waste is a non-point source of pollution. Two to three
days of droppings from 100 dogs can contribute enough
bacteria to close a bay and all watershed areas within 20
miles to swimming and shell fishing. Round worm is one of
the most common parasites found in dog waste, and it can
remain infectious in dog waste for years. Bacteria, worms
and other parasites are found in pet waste and can wash
into our water supply. Pet waste attracts rats & rodents.
Dog food is high in protein. Dogs can not break down all
of the protein and the body discards undigested food. This
waste provides a food source for mice and rats.
As many residents are aware, there are some pet owners
within the community that do not pick up after their pets
when they are walking them and do not routinely pick up
after their pets within their yards. As noted in website
articles, pet waste that is not immediately picked up and
properly disposed of can
contributes to the pollution of our storm water management ponds, the creek flowing through our community, and
eventually the Potomac River and the Chesapeake Bay.
Recently, I contacted the Prince William County Department of Public Works, Neighborhood Services Division to
determine what can be done about those homeowners who
do not clean up after their pets on a daily basis. Here is the
response that I received.
“Good Afternoon Mr. Johnson,
Thank you for the note. Unfortunately, Pet Waste is not
something Neighborhood Services can cite as a Property
Code Violation. You can however reach out to the Health Department if the issue is becoming hazardous to the neighboring properties 703-792-6310.
Another option to consider is to contact Animal Control.
They may be able to visit the site to ensure the animal is
properly being cared for if you suspect abuse...”
To learn more about what the county has to say on the issue
please visit www.pwcgov.org/government/dept/police/
animalcontrol/Pages/Animal-Related-Laws.aspx and join
us in helping keep Heritage Hunt an attractive and safe
community for all to enjoy.

A Useful Tool In Emergencies
Imagine that you are injured or suffer from a medical condition that temporarily renders you unconscious or otherwise
unable to communicate effectively with fire and rescue
personnel. The ambulance rushes to the scene with lights
flashing and the siren is blaring because the 911 emergency
system has been activated. Emergency Medical Technicians
(EMTs) arrive to find an elderly person on the floor unconscious. Every second counts. The quicker the rescue personnel can assess the situation and begin medical treatment,
the more likely their response can make a difference. But
there are many questions to be answered. Does the patient
have any existing medical conditions? Are they taking any
medications? Do they have allergies? Who should be contacted?
The above frightening scenario is all too common for senior
citizens and the EMTs who arrive on the scene to offer assistance. Emergency calls to 911 are not uncommon for the
elderly population and calls to assist senior citizens account
The Heritage Horn • May 2015
for 58% of all calls. Often these medical emergencies are
filled with feelings of panic, confusion, and helplessness.
But there is a simple way to improve the process and assist
the emergency personnel to accurately assess and treat the
victim. It is called “The File of Life”.
The “File of Life” is a bright red, magnetic pouch that contains a card with vitally important medical information for
each occupant of the home. The File of Life card includes a
place to list each resident’s name, emergency medical contacts, a mini-medical history, medications, dosages, allergies, recent surgeries, religion, doctor’s name and a health
care proxy. Please use a pencil to record the information on
the card so updates and revisions can be made. The medical
information should be reviewed and revised annually (and
as needed) to ensure accuracy. The entire pouch is held,
with a magnet and secured to the outside of the refrigerator
for easy access and visibility to the rescue personnel.
The “File of Life” pouches and cards are available to all Heritage Hunt residents and can be obtained at the Clubhouse
front desk. Please check to see if your family previously
received a “File of Life” pouch & card when you picked up
the Emergency Preparedness Information Packet when you
became a new resident of the Heritage Hunt community.
Since there is a cost to the EPG associated with the purchase
of the pouches and cards, please limit the distribution of
one pouch per household and one card per resident.
Remember, the information on the “File of Life” cards can
serve as a vital tool to aid the emergency personnel to
quickly diagnose your condition and provide the best emergency care possible.

Join us to discover how Tom Kenefake turned his retirement
from Arlington Public Schools and NVCC into “busy work”
odd jobs and now into becoming a highly regarded “go to”
resource for our Heritage Hunt repair and safety modifications. If he can’t fix it, he knows who can, from his 14 years
of experience with the unique issues he’s encountered with
our homes, with the challenges we experience as we age and
with the reliability of alternate professional resources. Tom
will share stories and photos of his experiences and suggestions for home safety and he will welcome an open exchange

of ideas shared, and fifteen volunteers coming forth the March
meeting proved to be a great start to the sub-committee’s
formation. We are excited to implement two ideas shared. First
is a karaoke/dance night on May 20 featuring DJ Harry in the
Great Oak Ballroom starting at 7 PM. Then on June 29 a day

CRC Health Series - New
Treatment Options for Skin
and Other Cancers
Hours: Mon-Thurs 8:30-4:30 / Fri 8:30-2:00
On Tuesday, May 19, at 7 PM in the Mountain View room,
Drs. Sanjeev Aggarwal and Moira Sutton will speak on new
treatment options for skin cancer as well as other new
treatment options offered due to new technology-True
Beam.
Cancer patients face many challenges, but new technology
at the Novant Health Cancer Center will help to overcome
one of them: the discomfort of treatment. The True Beam
radiosurgery system is an image-guided treatment, cutting
down the time those procedures normally take. This radiosurgery uses precisely targeted radiation to destroy cancer
cells without cutting.
“It’s one of the most advanced radiosurgery units available
and is a great addition to the cancer center.” says Sanjeev
Aggarwal, MD, medical director of the Novant Health
Cancer Center. “True Beam technology takes significantly
less time for treatment than traditional radiosurgery.” Says
Moira Sutton, MD, radiation oncologist at the center. Before
the new system patients would have to lie still for almost
45 minutes, which is hard to do. This allows us to treat in
less time, with the highest level of precision.

Linton Hall / Route 29 Interchange Traffic Shift Coming
VDOT recently announced their plans to shift traffic
patterns at Route 29 and Linton Hall this month in
hopes to complete the interchange project. Spokesperson, Joan Morris, indicates “traffic heading from
Linton Hall to southbound 29 will be detoured for
four weeks...” VDOT plans to detour motorists to the
University Drive overpass to Route 29. With daily lane
closures inevitable, motorists will have to use caution
with the increased flow of traffic at the Heathcote
Blvd and Route 29 intersection.
Morris adds, “We will open the eastbound 66 ramp to
southbound 29...” thus eliminating the railroad crossing and signal on Route 55 and 29. VDOT anticipates
the project will be completed sometime this summer
and those interested in reading the latest news on the
improvement may visit www.virginiadot.org.

Golf Handicap Update
Practice Rounds…Are They Allowed At HH?
You, as a golfer, have the choice of posting a score following
a round or calling the round a ‘practice’ round; however,
upon reviewing a golfer’s practices of posting, the Handicap
Committee is authorized to modify or withdraw a Handicap
Index of a player who does not return all acceptable scores,
or does not otherwise observe the spirit of the USGA Handicap System. (USGA Handicap System Section 11-7)
Practice rounds are allowed under USGA Rules of Golf, if
conducted in accordance with USGA Rule 7-1.
a. Match play
• On any day of a match play competition, a player may
practice on the competition course before a round.
b. Stroke Play:
• Before a round or play-off on any day of a stroke-play
competition, a competitor must not practice on the
competition course or test the surface of any putting
green on the course by rolling a ball or roughing or
scraping the surface.
• When two or more rounds of a stroke-play competition are to be played over consecutive days, a competitor must not practice between those rounds on
any competition course remaining to be played, or
test the surface of any putting green on such course
by rolling a ball or roughening or scraping the surface.
A golfer may choose to play a round of golf in which they
do not post a score for handicap purposes; however, this
‘practice’ is not recommended or encouraged. (Excerpts
from USGA Rules of Golf 2012-2015 & USGA Handicap System
2008-2011)

An elegant table setting is our feature for May. Since we
feast first with our eyes, a beautiful presentation is
imperative for a lovely meal. Jim and Diana Russell will be
sharing their love of antique silver with personal stories and
knowledge of their accoutrements –where the pieces came
from, ages of selected silver and the use of them as well.
Jim is an accomplished Civil War speaker and scholar. He
likes to collect English silver and antiques, especially pieces
from the George III period in England [c. 1760-1800]. He
also has a passion for American coin silver - and possesses
two spoons belonging to the Russell family that were stolen
by the Union during the Civil War, yet were returned.
Diana has a great interest in antiques and silver. Another
passion is Chinese porcelain most especially Chinese Rose
Medallion; one of her prized pieces is a chop plate that
dates back to approximately 1780. She also enjoys finding
treasures of “flow blue” china that was made in the early
1850s up until approximately 1880. Diana is enthusiastic in
making creative tablescapes for all dining events from using
stuffed pheasants to oyster shells. Join us for an informative
and entertaining presentation.

The Giving Circle
The Giving Circle meeting on March 17th , featured
a presentation by Elizabeth Young, Supervisors of
School Social Workers for the Prince William County
School System and Jennifer Kooyoomjian, Intensive
Probation Officer for the 31st Juvenile Court Services
Unit of Prince William County, Manassas and Manassas
Park Cities. They gave a presentation on behalf of the
Greater Prince William Human Trafficking Task Force.
They spoke specifically about Domestic Minor Sex
Trafficking which is, ‘The commercial sexual exploitation of American children within U.S. borders. It is the
“recruitment, harboring, transportation, provision, or
obtaining of a person for the purpose of a commercial
sex act’ where the person is a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident under the age of 18 years.”
Prince William County School System has received a
grant from the Potomac Health Foundation to address
human trafficking among PWCS youth, primarily along
the Route1 corridor in Woodbridge. The program is
being provided to 4,800 ninth grade students in PWC
and has become a model for other jurisdictions and
received recognition at both the state and national
levels. They showed a video, Chosen, which illustrated
the strategies used to attract young people to human
trafficking activity. It was chilling to learn that children
of all socio-economic groups in Prince William County
have been caught in this horrific practice.
The speaker for the 2 PM, May 19th meeting in the
Marsh Mansion will be Sandy Day Smith who is a
volunteer for CASA, Court Appointed Special
Advocates with the Prince William Juvenile and
Domestic Relations Court. Please feel free to join us
as we learn more about CASA, one of the agencies The
Giving Circle supported CASA in its annual grant award
program in 2014. For Information on The Giving Circle

Spirit of Service Remembered
CUDDLE ON
œ
ALLERGIES OFF
As a young kid, I’ll never forget the somber and inspiring
moment of watching the exchange of guards for the Tomb
of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery.
Seeing the care, precision and respect given brought a
sense of sadness for those families that have lost a loved
one and a sense of national pride. Pride for the fact that
we take time to honor an individual’s life of service and
ultimate sacrifice.
America is truly a fortunate nation rich with individuals
that take Lincoln’s statement, “Freedom is not the ability to
do what we want, but what we ought,” to heart. Every day
we encounter those inspiring people who find great
satisfaction in meeting the needs of others. They see service
not as a chore or obligation but instead an opportunity to
make another’s day a bite more bearable. Here in
Heritage Hunt we see and hear several stories of residents
that receive great joy in pulling resources together to meet
the needs of their neighbors both in the community and
outside our gates. Some of those examples are published
in The Heritage Horn each month. Those stories inspire
others to get involved. From collecting pop tops, crutches,
food, clothing, to donating time, money and old books.
All make a difference and point to the rich culture here in
Heritage Hunt. As Warren Buffet once stated, “someone is
sitting in the shade today because someone planted a tree
a long time ago.” For those that gave their life in service to
our country an immeasurable debt of gratitude is offered.
For us that continue to enjoy the “shade” a question arises
for us to consider. What “tree” will we plant for others to
enjoy years from now? May you have a wonderful Memorial
weekend with friends and family this year.
Mark Hillis, Lifestyle Director
There’s no doubt about it: allergies

pleasures. It’s time you made the
switch to an allergy-free life.

HH Little Theater
Twice a year Heritage Hunt Little Theater pulls out all the
stops and puts on a stage production worthy of any
community theater. This spring was no exception as the
Little Theater presented “A Bad Year for Tomatoes,”
directed by Dot Schuetze and starring half a dozen of
your friends and neighbors. The comedy, written by John
Patrick, revolved around the efforts of an aging TV star
to “lose” herself in a small New England town in order to
write the story of her life. The hilarious efforts she went to
to conceal her true identity brought gales of laughter.
HHLT’s shows are most definitely both a joy and challenge
for all of us who love theater. Nearly every member
contributes their time and talent in one way or another.
Besides acting and directing, members are involved in
construction and carpentry, painting, sewing, assembling
props and decorating the set, lighting and sound (with
generous assistance of LSTV), costuming, makeup and hair
styling, tickets and publicity. Members act as prompters
and stand ins at rehearsals. It’s definitely an “all hands on
deck” project and a lot of fun. If any of this sounds
interesting to you, please come to the next general meeting
Thursday, May 21, at 7:00 pm in the Craft Room to learn
more. Or visit our website at http://hhlittletheater.org/
Kathryn Schmiel, HHLT Communications
The Tomatoes Hit The Fan
24
It might have been “A Bad Year for Tomatoes,” but it was
a good year for laughing at the antics of the Little Theater
actors at our last play produced last month. The play was
about an actress thinking of leaving show biz and writing
her memoirs. She moves to an isolated New England town
to do this and is surrounded by nosy neighbors. Hilarity
ensues.
Georgiana Ide played the actress and her “crazy” twin with
great verve. Her neighbors, Ina Mayer, Ginny McCardle
and Mary Glascock do such a convincing job of playing the
nosy neighbors, I wondered if that was great acting or if we
were just seeing their true colors. No, I’m sure it was good
acting. Tom Taggart spends the play trying, as the theatrical agent, to convince the actress to go back to acting and
finally succeeds. Chuck Breder plays the bumbling handyman who falls for the phony twin sister. Now we know a
bumbler Chuck, is not so, again good acting. Now it seems
that Jim Burwell again plays the lawman in this play. It must
be something about the hat and badge he likes. Just be sure
you follow all your “P’s and Q’s” or he might make a citizen’s arrest.
It was an evening of great fun and there are many backstage helpers to thank. Dotty Schuetze, the director, Sandy
Thompson, the producer, Ted Day, the set builder and
designer. Kudos to you. Goldie Grandy served as stage
manager, with Denny Cumber as Asst. Stage Manager. Jane
Becker was Prop Manager. Photos were by Ed Knepley.
Programs, poster and ads were handled by Bets Knepley.
These two have been indispensable to us for years in doing
this important job. Nancy Mahevich, the go-to girl added
much to the production. Arlene Maroney and Joyce Mancini
did ticket reservations. Sandy Iasiello made all the faces
stand out with her expertise and helpers in makeup. Last
but not least, the important jobs of sound by John Bisaga
and lighting by Nick Ide. These men have been our faithful
helpers for years. Light and sound have developed into near
perfection. So thanks to all for a great memory and keep
“breaking those legs.” We love it!

Heritage Hunt Concert
Honors One Of Their Own
At HHC’s March 26 Buddy Holly show, featuring Robbie Limon, Bets Knepley was honored for her vital contributions
in helping launch HHC in the summer of 2008 and for having served as HHC’s Communications Director since 2013.
As HHC’s principal communicator, Bets saw that HHC’s
700+ members and others throughout our community received timely, engaging concert highlights in their mailbox,
in the Horn, on HHTV and via email. Additionally, Bets
prepared and printed HHC’s monthly programs, reservation forms and flyers. As if all this were not enough, Bets
designed and established HHC’s website, hhconcerts.org;
initiated the use of Constant Contact for member surveys
and for email reminders of upcoming concerts; and played
a primary role in developing HHC’s distinctive new logo.
All this work paid off, big-time: HHC attendance sharply increased since Bets took the reins. It is especially fitting that
Bets was recognized at Robbie Limon’s second HHC performance; in 2011 she was the first to propose Robbie for our
community’s monthly concert series! Bets’ contributions to
HHC will be sorely missed; her work is now carried on by a
half-dozen HHC volunteers, aided by increased assistance
from Mark Hillis and Laura Weesner. Bets and nearly two
dozen other volunteers have made HHC’s monthly concerts a central element of Heritage Hunt’s award-winning
lifestyle.

Women of Note Spring
Concert May 13 & 14
Got a song to sing, but can’t carry a tune? Well, there are
almost fifty ladies who can and are working hard to let
that song out of their voices and straight to your ears and
into your mind and heart. The Women of Note are ready to
perform a Spring Concert that will be different from all our
others, because we, the ladies who sing, have picked out
our favorites to sing for you.
This ninth spring concert will show how much we have
improved in these years of entertaining you. Our fearless
leader teaches us something new every time we practice.
Then we show what we learned to all of yo. You will love it.
The music is lively and upbeat and will have you dancing in
your seats.
We also have a new pianist to help our rehearsals. I wish
I was as talented as Sue Munsun is. She inspires us as she
teaches us. Thanks for volunteering, Sue, we needed you
and you answered the call. Voices without accompaniment
lacks depth. Sue and Mae Mathers ad that depth.
Come out to listen on May 13 and 14 and enjoy an evening
with friends and favorite music. Sign up and add your check
for $10. Concert seating is the order of the day. We’ll enjoy
singing and I will bet that you will enjoy listening.

Ars Nova Returns May 28
The Ars Nova Chamber Orchestra, an innovative 30-member, conductor-less ensemble, has been a favorite of Heritage Hunt audiences for years. Musicians take the role of
the conductor, trading and sharing leadership within each
performance. This results in an invigorating and creative
approach to making music and a thrilling concert experience for the audience. We are excited to have Ars Nova
perform on our concert series once again.
For this concert Ars Nova will perform music of Haydn,
Mozart and Beethoven. The concert’s centerpiece will be
Mozart’s Oboe Concerto with principal oboist Erika Grimm
as soloist. Originally composed in 1777, the concerto was
lost and resurfaced only in 1920. It has since become one
of the most often-performed oboe concertos. The program
will also include Haydn’s elegant and tuneful Symphony
No. 71 of 1780. The symphony contains some delightful
music for horns and woodwinds, as well as strings. Finally,
members of the orchestra will play Beethoven’s Sextet for
two horns, two violins, viola, and cello. This 1795 work is
a real jewel of the chamber repertoire and belongs to the
serenade genre, very popular in Beethoven’s time. It gives
the two horns a real workout!
The concert begins at 7:30, as usual, and doors will open
at 7:00. Sign up today by completing HHC’s ivory-colored
reservation form, available at the clubhouse, or print a copy
online at HHC’s website: www.hhconcerts.org. Questions?

Blanket Stitchers - A Proud History of Talent and Service
The Blanket Stitchers began in 2000 when a group of
quilters decided to share their time and talents with the
community. It began by using remnants of personal
projects and two old donated sewing machines. The
builder and the women’s club each donated a new
sewing machine later on. Often, members were asked for
cash donations to purchase larger needed items. People
had to bring their own machines and tools from home.
When the events of 911 occurred, the group worked almost
every day. It was a small way to comfort others. One block
was put into a quilt given to the Office of the Chaplain of the
New York City Fire Department.
The annual craft shows became a way for the group to
make money and expand their operations. Members were
also given a chance to show off their creativity and produce
enough money to buy more machines and supplies for
the upcoming year. Items sold are not only quilts, but doll
clothes, place mats, Christmas tree skirts, purses and many
other beautiful items. Currently the group has 7 sewing
machines, irons, rulers, threads, and cupboards full of
beautiful fabrics. Over 200 quilts are made each year.
Donations of fabric are still welcome too-especially large
pieces used for backing.
The main recipient of the quilts is Project Linus, a national
28
organization that collects and distributes quilts to
traumatized children through the age of 18. Although it is
a national organization, the quilts are given locally. Often
they are distributed at hospitals and police departments.
Another recipient is the Gainesville Nursing and Rehab
center across the street. Since their doors opened, every
permanent resident has received a quilt from the group.
About 80 are delivered each year and the residents are
delighted to receive them. Quilts are also sent to veterans,
who sometimes have no other possessions.
The group acquired some fabric that was not suitable for
quilts, so they began making pet beds. Now, over 100 beds
are made annually and delivered to Prince William County
where they are used in cages and sent home when an
animal is adopted. That decision was a win/win since it
uses imperfect fabric, but gives comfort to animals in need.
Currently, this group has 18 members and always looking
for more volunteers. They meet every Monday-including
most holidays-from 9-12. It is no wonder this group is
jokingly referred to as a sweat shop. The many steps of
quilt-making divide it into cutting, pressing, sewing, and
finishing result in an assembly line. There have been
several members who have never sewn a stitch!

March was a difficult month for hiking. Between the snow,
cold and rain, we only got one hike in and even that was a
rescheduled date. We had a beautiful day to hike the Manassas National Battlefield First Manassas Trail where the
first Battle of Bull Run occurred. This is about a 5 mile loop
passing many points of interest through the woods, along
the banks of Bull Run, as well as across the battlefield. It was
great to be out with friends on a nice spring day.
Our scheduled May hikes include Sky Meadow State Park,
which should be a hike of about 6 miles on natural surface
trail. Later in the month we return to Bull Run Mountain,
where we will explore many of the lower trails since High
Point is closed.

HH Cycling News
FREE In-Home Consultation
We Beat Next Day Blinds Everyday Prices!
Phew! Finally spring and warmer weather. Winter hung
around and made riding generally unpleasant all through
March. April saw the crocus, daffodils, tulips, cherry trees
blossom, but it also lived up to its reputation of being a
windy month. The highlight ride in April was what has
become an annual event – a ride in DC to view the cherry
blossoms and lunch in Shirlington.
Now that the weather is better, we will be resuming our
monthly rides away from HH to other places like National
Harbor, Purcellville, Nokesville, etc. One of our members has
mapped out several new rides for us. So, come on out and
join in the fun. Come see Mother Nature unfold up close and
personal.
Often I hear – “I would really like to join you folks, but I
haven’t ridden a bike in years.” or “I don’t have a bike”. Most
of us have a bike in the garage in good condition that we
used to ride. So, if you would like to give riding a try before
spending several hundred dollars on a good quality bike,
email Bob Shannon at [email protected] so we can get
you married up with one of our extra bikes. Do not be afraid
that you have not ridden a bike for several years. We always
work with and take care of the newcomers. No matter how
slowly you ride, we will not let you ride alone. One of us
will be there to help if you get a flat or throw a chain off the
sprocket. If after a few miles you need to turn back, one of
us will accompany you home. If you do not know how to fit
the bike to you, we will assist. If you don’t know how to use
all those gears, we will teach you. When you are ready to
buy your own bike, go see the friendly folks at Haymarket
Bicycles on route 55 between Piedmont Tire and Auto and
Mac Donalds and tell them you are from Heritage Hunt, or go
see Spokes in Vienna or Fairfax. One new rider found a nice
bike on eBay.
Currently, the Cycling Club is meeting every Monday – Friday
at 9:00 AM at the Marsh Mansion. Persons not yet on the HH
Cycling Club email list may get on the list by emailing Bob
Shannon at [email protected]. Being on the list will
allow you to know when weather conditions are considered
too severe to ride locally or when the club is going to take a
special ride away from HH, like riding the W&OD trail or going to National Harbor.
On Tuesdays the Club conducts a leisurely ride lasting 60
minutes ( plus or minus a minute or two), over mostly level
terrain, that stops at the DeJa Brew coffee shop at Merchants
Square in Dominion Valley for coffee and chit chat, and then
rides back to Heritage Hunt.

Formation of Heritage Hunt
Shooters Club Begins With
A Kickoff Meeting May 14
We are starting a club for anyone interested in shooting
sports, regardless of level of experience. Anyone interested in pistol, rifle, shotgun or archery is invited to join. The
purpose of the club is to discuss and exchange information
regarding shooting activities and firearms, and to encourage activities among members who have an interest in
the shooting sports. Heritage Hunt Shooters membership
will include interested beginners with no experience up to
experienced shooters and instructors.
We plan to hold our first meeting on May 14, at 4:00 PM
in the Marsh Mansion “living room” (side of the Marsh
mansion away from the golf course & grill room). Please
let Greg Ellis [email protected] know by e-mail
whether you plan to participate in this meeting. If you
have a scheduling problem then please let him know what
would work for you.
Firearm ownership is not required for club membership. If
you are new to shooting then we strongly recommend that
you take a class first. The club will provide information on
how to do this. You should also talk with more experienced
shooters before purchasing a firearm. Thanks and we look
forward to meeting you.

The Bocce League is off to a great start. Opening Day was
on a frozen and windy Saturday morning of March 28th, but
our tougher than tough players were there to compete. Our
league, now in its sixth season, continues its rapid growth.
We now have twenty-one teams of six players. Counting
substitutes, we have 140 players. It is the second largest
participatory sport at Heritage Hunt, behind golf.
There are a large number of rookies, and all practiced so
they would be ready in time for Opening Day. The teams
this year have some colorful names. Some relate to the rolling aspect of the game. Some are Italian in nature reflecting
the heritage of the game. Others are just fun. These are the
names and the captains.

New Bocce Scoreboards
Add A Nice Touch To A
Heritage Hunt Tradition
CHECK YOUR HOME PRICE AT
www.teamdebbieandpat.smarthomeprice.com
Since the beginning, the bocce players have dealt with poor
quality scoreboards that we got from the Internet. They
were flimsy, unattractive, had to be assembled, and did not
reflect the standards of Heritage Hunt.
That situation is a thing of the past as two new scoreboards
were unveiled in April. Designed and built by Bob “The
Builder” Dodd, they are sturdy, attractive, and an
improvement to the community. They can even be removed
for functions if necessary. Thanks to Bob Dodd (pictured
below), the Grounds Committee, and Frank Maresca who
worked diligently with the Grounds Committee to make this
a reality.
