‒ No.318 March/April 2012 Edited and Issued bimonthly by FUKUOKA INTERNATIONAL ASSOCIATION Rainbow Plaza! IMS 8F, 1-7-11 Tenjin, Chuo-ku, Fukuoka City 810-0001 Tel: 092-733-2220 Fax: 092-733-2215 http://www.rainbowfia.or.jp! The sports season has arrived, and Fukuoka is getting fired up! Fukuoka is a great place for sports’ lovers. It is home not only to last season’s Japan Series champions, the professional baseball team “FUKUOKA SoftBank HAWKS”, but also to the J League soccer team “Avispa Fukuoka”, the women’s Nadeshiko League soccer team “Fukuoka J Anclas”, and the pro basketball team “Rizing Fukuoka”. Focusing on these four teams, we hope to get you pumped to support “TEAM FUKUOKA”! FUKUOKA SoftBank HAWKS It can probably be said that baseball is the #1 most popular sport in Japan. There are 12 professional Japanese baseball teams, split evenly with six teams each in the Central and Pacific leagues. The SoftBank HAWKS are in the Pacific League. Last season, the HAWKS won their first Japan Series victory since 2003, and the third time since moving to Fukuoka. This was also the first time they won as the SoftBank HAWKS, as their previous wins were under the name “Daiei HAWKS”. Just as is written in the song “Those Are Our HAWKS”, the HAWKS roused the excitement of Fukuoka citizens. Although several of the top HAWKS players from last season have been traded to other teams, the team as a whole will no doubt once again rally their fans! If you’ve never seen a baseball game, you don’t know what you’re missing! հSoftBank HAWKS Mascot: Hawk Family The HAWKS have eight lovable character mascots, known collectively as the Hawk Family. Starting with the team all-star, Harry, there’s also Honey the cheerleader, the three nephews Hack, Rick, and Hock, uncle Honky and aunt Helen, and Harry’s friendly National Holidays for March & April rival Herculy. In addition to rallying the crowd at the stadium, they also participate in many events as representatives of the HAWKS. They are available to take pictures with during games, so look for them and get a souvenir photo together when you go! A Guide for Enjoying Your Time at Fukuoka Yahoo! JAPAN Dome հavispa fukuoka 1) Food at Yahoo! Dome: Every year new shops come in with new food options, too many to try no matter how many times you go! Get to the game early so you can take a good look around the whole concourse. 2) Fight songs for individual players and choreography: There is a fight song for each HAWKS player when he stands in the batting box or on the mound. Master them all and send your encouragement to the players! հRizing-Fukuoka y.sasaki/bj-league 3) Honeys performance at the bottom of the 5th inning: Cheer on the HAWKS by dancing along with the Honeys, the team cheerleaders! 4) HAWKS fight song and balloon release at the bottom of the 7th inning: After the whole Rainbow Plaza will be open crowd sings the every day in March & April. However, from the 2012 season, along with the top two teams from J2 moving up to J1, the teams in 3rd through 6th place will face off to determine the last team to move up into J1. Fukuoka’s team “Avispa Fukuoka” played in J2 from 2007 until 2010. Last year they competed in J1, but unfortunately this year they fell back into J2. In the 2012 season, the team hopes to get a fresh start with their new uniforms and return to J1 next year. The name “Avispa” itself is a Spanish word meaning “wasp” that also derives from avis, and is representative of the “nimbleness”, “control”, and “ability to make varied group attacks” characteristic of wasps that the team hopes to embody. Emblem The central shield of the emblem represents the hometown of Fukuoka, while the club name, encircling a soccer ball, հavispa fukuoka stands for the “harmony” and “unity” of the eleven players. The surrounding vinelike pattern symbolizes their tight defense, while the spear-like shape at the bottom represents a wasp’s stinger. The crown at the top of the emblem is symbolic of the victor. Mascots: Abi-kun and Bibi-chan The character “Abi-kun”, whose name was chosen by public vote, resembles a wasp, as does the second mascot, nicknamed “Bibi-chan”. On August 10th, 2003, everyone celebrated the wedding of Abi and Bibi! The witness to their nuptials was none other than Harry Hawk of the SoftBank HAWKS (then the Daiei HAWKS). Game-watching Points 1) Of course, the thing to watch is the battle for the ball fought between 22 players on հavispa fukuoka the field! Passes, drills, magnificent plays. The ultimate moment is when our team makes a goal! The feeling of excitement throughout the stadium at this moment is simply the best! 2) There is what is known as “Yatai Mura” (food stand village) on the backstand side of Level Five Stadium, where you can eat dishes limited to Avispa’s home turf. Fuel up to watch the game beforehand at Yatai Mura! 3) People who want to support the players with cheers and yells should proceed to the home-side backstands. 4) People who want to focus on watching the game should spectate from the stands above where the players enter the field. հavispa fukuoka Games/Venue Information Information on home games and venues can be found on the Avispa Fukuoka homepage (http:// www.avispa.co.jp/). Game information for March and April are also listed on P5 of this issue. How to get to Level Five Stadium: On game days, Nishitetsu runs special direct buses from Tenjin Nichigin-mae (Tenjin bus terrace 19A) and Hakata Bus Terminal (1st floor, door 14). We also recommend using the “Support Avispa Taxis” that run from Tenjin, Hakata station, and Ohashi Station. There is also a shuttle bus from Fukuoka Airport. The հavispa fukuoka walk from Fukuoka Airport to Level Five Stadium takes 25 minutes. Fukuoka J Anclas “Fukuoka J Anclas” is currently the only team in Kyushu to participate in the women’s soccer league “Nadeshiko League”. The name “Anclas” is a Spanish word that means “anchor”. The team began competing in the Nadeshiko League Division 2 in 2006. In September of 2007, the team gained corporate status and became known as “NPO Anclas”. In 2009, Anclas finished in 3rd place in their division, and after winning a league substitution game, they made their way up to Division 1 (now called Nadeshiko League). The main team has 20 registered players, including students and workers. The players are not pros, but they receive a lot of support from their work places and local businesses so that they can balance their soccer/work activities. Anclas players work hard at practice every day. At present, in addition to an attached youth team created to promote training for young athletes, Anclas also hosts a soccer school for children and is working hard to nurture the growth of girls’ soccer. Since rising to the Nadeshiko League in 2010, Anclas has voiced the goal of “Champions within five years!” This year, 2012, is their third season. With two years of experience behind them, the players and staff are gearing up to work together to win! No doubt they will show plays as fierce as what you see in men’s soccer, as well as show us the characteristic flexibility of female players. On game days, there will be lots of events being held and original team goods sold. The team will be thrilled if you go to watch them play. Put on something in their team color, orange, and help them get fired up! Mascot: “Anclucky” This character is loved by fans for being “cute”. Nadeshiko League The Nadeshiko League is Japan’s top women’s soccer league and includes 10 teams from around the country. Many of the players from the 2011 FIFA World Cup champion team, Nadeshiko Japan, belong to teams within this league. Find more information about the Nadeshiko League and participating teams at http:// www.nadeshikoleague.jp/ Games/Venue Information Information on home games and venues can be found on the Anclas homepage http://www.anclas.jp/ Rizing Fukuoka The “bj League”, Japan’s longawaited professional basketball league, was established in 2005. Although there were only six teams at the outset, the league, currently in the middle of its 2011-2012 season, now has 19 highly competitive teams split between the East Conference and West Conference. Fukuoka’s own team, “Rizing Fukuoka”, was formed in 2007 and plays in the Western Conference. In order to play in the finals, they must finish as one of the top 6 teams within their conference and participate in the playoffs in May. The team is plunging ahead with their eyes set on the finals, under the slogan “One heart, one body”. հRizing-Fukuoka y.sasaki/bj-league The origin of “Rizing” The name “Rizing” is a compound word representing spirit and energy that comes from the English word for the ascent of the sun (rising), as well as the name for the Japanese god of thunder, Raijin. The team was named as such in the hopes of being encouraging and “spirit-lifting” for all. How to enjoy Rizing Fukuoka games 120%! 1) Visit them at their open practices! Rizing Fukuoka holds practices that are open to viewing by the public. Maybe if you go to watch them practice before a game, you’ll spot a particular player you want to support! Check the team homepage for information on open practices. 2) Get to the court early on game days! Before the game starts, you can enjoy dances put on by the Rizing Fukuoka Cheerleaders, who use sound, lighting, and projected images for full impact! 3) You mustn’t miss the halftime show! A different event is planned for each halftime show, and what a show it is! There are often 㨪continued on page 8 ‒ 8‒ March/April 2012 “Spring has come!” Seigo Sakai 㨪continued from page 7 events in which they ask for spectator participation, so take part to win souvenir prizes and make great memories! 4) Savor the game even after it’s over! After each game, the head coach gives an interview, and MVP players are named following winning games. You can show up to where the players exit the facility to receive high fives and interact them. 5) Feel the vibe of the game! When it comes to basketball, nothing is more thrilling than the fast-paced nature of the game. Because the court is so narrow, there is a feeling of closeness between the spectators and players—making them feel like they’re fighting together! Report from an Editor of Rainbow! One of our editors went to watch Rizing Fukuoka at an open practice! Today, since two players are out sick with colds, seven players, the head coach, and several trainers are in attendance. Just from watching them, you can tell the players, coach and trainers all get along well—there’s a harmonious atmosphere on the court. I had imagined a rigid, relentless practice during which laughter was strictly banned, but seeing the players at ease, I could tell that they truly enjoy playing basketball. On a regular day when all the players are present, they invite local university basketball players to their open practices and hold five-on-five games, which is fun for both the fans and the players. Apparently Rizing holds their especially tough practices in secret. Recently, during their Wednesday open practice, you can catch a glimpse of the players during a hard practice as they go through running drills, showing the “hard” side of their fantastic front-and-center athletic feats to their fans and eliciting a good reaction. There’s no doubt that if you see the players during such a tough practice and then watch them compete during a game, you’ll be doubly impressed. At present, there are five Japanese players and four foreign players on the Rizing Fukuoka team. It is the first time living in Fukuoka for all the foreign players, and it made me happy to hear that they have come to love the city. Only two months remain in the current season, and I really hope they can breeze through the playoffs and into the finals. I felt very strongly that it would be really exciting to see the same magnificent drills and carefully judged passes, hear the sound of the shots, and witness an impressive slam dunk I had seen at practice during a real game. Why don’t you also take a visit to watch Rizing Fukuoka during their open practices and experience the fun of basketball? Games/Venue Information Rizing Fukuoka has a game every weekend during the season. They have several home venues in Kyushu, including the Fukuoka Shimin Taiikukan, Kyuden Kinen Taiikukan, and Action Fukuoka within Fukuoka City. Information on home games and venues can be found on the Rizing Fukuoka homepagehttp://rizing-fukuoka.com/Home game information for March and April are also listed on P5 of this issue հSoftBank HAWKS In addition to the teams we described in this issue, Fukuoka is home to three rugby teams (who just finished their 2011-2012 season—the 2012-2013 season starts in October), Kyushu pro wrestling, and also hosts one of six big sumo tournaments every year, making Fukuoka truly a “Mecca” for sports-lovers. This year, the London Olympics will be held, making 2012 the year for sports—so get yourself to a game! հavispa fukuoka Let’s hope to see such a victory scene again this year! հRizing-Fukuoka y.sasaki/bj-league
