Workshop 2

Melissa McGinnis, PT, MPT, Senior Pediatric Intensive PT, Euro- National Center for Intensive Pediatric PT
Peds
Research continues to point to the benefits of physical
activity for children who have gross motor disorders caused
from cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, traumatic brain
injuries, and other non-progressive neuromuscular
disorders. While the primary goal of Intensive therapy is to
teach new and lasting functional physical skills to children
within this population, there are other benefits that are
equally important to the child’s well being. As Intensive
Pediatric PT has evolved we are recognizing additional
benefits such as improved self-esteem and confidence as the
body gets stronger. This presentation will provide definitions
for European-inspired Intensive Pediatric PT, the benefits of
this emerging therapy, explanations of the European-inspired
concepts and tools used during an intensive PT session, and
benefits beyond physical that are based on increased activity
levels. The speaker, who is an expert in this emerging field of
Intensive Pediatric Physical Therapy, will review the research
and theories highlighting the need for Intensive Pediatric PT
and provide compelling video samples of how this model of
therapy is creating better outcomes for children at several
levels. More information available at www.europeds.org.

superior class of manual wheelchairs that would
combine orthoses-like customization with the most
advanced materials. We believed that these attributes
would help users remain independent longer and
achieve greater mobility. Since that first chair was
designed over a decade ago, TiLite has developed a full
range of superior titanium and aluminum wheelchairs
that cater to the unique requirements of each user.

Tubie Toppers are colorful and absorbent pads that
encircle the top of feeding tubes. They have 3 layers of
material that absorb leakage much better than gauze,
leaving tube sites clean and dry. Wearers report less
irritation and granulation versus traditional medical gauze.
Each Tubie Topper measures 2 1/2" in diameter and is
secured closed with Velcro, which will release if pulled,
reducing the risk of a dislodged tube. Tubie Toppers are
washable and reusable, reducing medical waste.
