Romi machines
impress at MACH
Romi Machines exhibited
five CNC machines from its
240 sq m stand at MACH
2016 earlier this month. The
machines on display included a
Romi DCM 620-5X simultaneous
five-axis VMC, which was seen
machining a model of a RomiIsetta micro-car from a 300 mm
square billet. The Isetta was built
under licence by Romi between
1956 and 1961, making it the first
ever car to be produced in Brazil.
Elsewhere on the stand
was a GL 280M turn-mill centre
featuring live tooling and a
C-axis, which was served at
the show by a Kawasaki robot.
The automated cell was running
throughout the exhibition
machining a Romi bottle-opener
as a free giveaway to stand
visitors. Further machines
demonstrated included a D1250
three-axis VMC with 1250 mm
X-axis, which Romi says is
proving particularly popular in the
UK market, along with a C510
mid-sized teach lathe. In addition,
the company’s range of CNC
plastic injection machines were
represented by the Romi EN70.

Milling cutters for aluminium
The cutting tools on display
from WNT included a
recently unveiled range for
milling aluminium. Released in
late 2015, Type W solid carbide
aluminium cutters have already
been extended with additional
flute length and radii options.

“All products from MACH Machine Tools are
specified to be a usable package, we don’t have a
low list price and then an endless list of accessories
that adds a further £5000 to the machine's price,”
says company director, David Andrew. “In the case
of the grinders, they have the MACH SG-PLC
controls systems with built-in grinding cycles to
control the Y and Z axes, electromagnetic chucks
with demagnetising units, coolant and dust extraction
systems, MPG hand-wheels, hydraulic table
, four- and multi-flute cutters.

Grinding and
machining
RK International Machine
Tools promoted some of the
latest grinding technology
available from its principals,
Taiwan-based Perfect and
Italy-based Robbi and Delta. In
fact, the Perfect X36 surface
grinder made its UK debut at
MACH. It is now the largest in
the X-series range and features
a 300 x 600 mm table size with
maximum distance between
the table and spindle centreline
of 600 mm. A further attraction
of the stand was the Modig
Universal mill. Comparing the
Modig way with a conventional
horizontal machining centre at
an aerospace subcontractor, the
annual material savings alone
were calculated at £132,000 per
year, says RK.

XYZ Machine Tools
populated its stand with
no less than 18 machines,
including ProtoTrak controlled
mills and lathes, machining and
turning centres, as well as the
LPM (Lean Production Machine)
and 2-OP models. Beyond its

XYZ also displayed a range of
machining centres and turning
centres fitted with the Siemens
control system. Concluding the
machines on show from XYZ
were those displayed on its
‘education stand’ in Hall 4. The

Citizen unveils
two machines
Milling and
turning
Citizen Machinery launched two new machines
at the show, including the Citizen Cincom A20VII CNC sliding head turn-mill centre, a 20 mm
bar capacity machine that can be reset between
guide bush and non-guide bush operations for the
machining of shorter workpieces. Also introduced
was the latest (sixth) generation of Miyano BNJ-SY6
fixed head, dual-spindle, twin-turret turn-mill centre.
According to Citizen, the new machine features
higher rigidity in both of its spindles, greater torque
for driven tools, a Y-axis on the main turret and a
new design of eight-station second turret.

Ajax Machine Tools celebrated its 75th
anniversary by displaying its AJV550
machining centre, as well as the company’s
Interactive CNC mill and Evolution CNC lathe. The
AJV550 machining centre offers travel of 550 x
400 x 500 mm in the X, Y and Z axes respectively,
and features 36 m/min rapid traverse rates, a
BT40 spindle a 16-position automatic tool changer.

Alcon installs flexible
production cell
Being able to mix and match
pallet sizes, and adapt
the automation system to
changing production needs, is said
to be a major benefit of the Erowa
systems provided by REM Systems.
The ability for a system to support
more than one machine tool from
a single load station, with only one
robot involved is also a major factor
in reducing the cost of automation.
A manufacturer in the world
of high performance automotive
parts is Tamworth-based Alcon
Components, which produces
brakes and clutches for motorsport
and high performance vehicles.
Alcon’s flexible production cell
includes a Hermle C20U fiveaxis machining centre and an
Erowa Robot Easy automatic
pallet loading system. The cell is
configured to handle 12 pallets,
based on the Erowa Production
Comau, an Italy-based
manufacturer of flexible
automated systems, exhibited
earlier this month at MACH
2016, one of the UK’s biggest
manufacturing and automation
exhibitions.
The company opted to
demonstrate its range of Racer
robots, which included the Racer3
(pictured) and Racer 999. The Racer
999 is a six-axis articulated robot
that inherits all the key features of
its ‘older brother’, the Racer 7-1.4.
With a reach of 999 mm, Racer 999
is particularly suited for applications
in limited spaces such as machine
tending, assembly, handling and
packaging. Designed for a payload
of 7 kg, Racer 999 exhibits the
physiognomy of a human muscle
but takes the geometric shape of
a robot. On the stand at MACH, a
Racer 7 was in action demonstrating
its accuracy by shooting three point
hoops on the Comau basketball
court.
Also exhibited was a range
of standard automation products
from Comau’s portfolio. For
instance, the company’s Compact
Welding Gun is a lighter, more
compact servo spot welding gun
than ever before. According to
Comau, the welding gun reduces
the necessary payload of its
Chuck 210. Each pallet can
be loaded with raw material or
workpieces up to 260 mm square
or 325 mm diameter with a transfer
weight of up to 130 kg.
This capacity allows Alcon
to automatically load large and
complex brake calliper housings
that can require 2 or 3 hours of
machining. As a result, the machine
can be left unattended for 24 hours.
“As well as being able to run
unattended, the cell gives a more
flexible way of working,” says an
Alcon spokesperson. “One-off
jobs are easily accomplished and
the repeatability of the pallet base
allows us to stop jobs before they
are finished and restart them later
with no realignment issues. With
this flexibility we can change the
production plan at any time.”

Hands-on role for robot
in research contest
A Kuka mobile robot unit was
used recently for the first time
in the UK to help a group
of engineers devise new ways of
using automation on the factory
floor. Students from Birmingham
and Loughborough Universities,
together with researchers at
Coventry’s Manufacturing
Technology Centre, have joined
forces for a European robotics
competition organised by the
EuRoc Consortium.
The team’s task is to utilise
the FlexFellow mobile robot
unit, supplied by Kuka Systems
UK, as part of an autonomous
robotic system that can solve
a series of shop floor logistics
and manipulation challenges.
The contest’s aim is to further
exploit human-robot collaboration
technology so that advanced
manufacturing processes and
applications can be developed for
European industry.
Fanuc UK has announced
the launch of its latest
collaborative robot, the
CR-7iA, with the ability to lift
payloads of up to 7 kg. The
CR-7iA’s mechanics correspond to
that of the Fanuc’s LR Mate-series
(LR Mate 200iD) and make it
more accessible for manufacturing
looking handle to lighter materials,
while working hand-in-hand with
human workers.
The launch of the CR-7iA
follows the introduction of the
CR-35iA, a larger collaborative
robot which Fanuc says has
attracted interest from a variety
of industries. The articulated arm,
floor-mounted CR-35iA features six
controllable axes and a reach of
1813 mm. Repeatability is cited as
±0.08 mm. The CR-35iA features
a safe and gentle looking soft
cover that reduces impact force
and prevents a human operator
from being pinched, and is certified
to meet the requirements of
international standard ISO10218-1.
Collaborative robots provide
the benefit of handling heavy
materials and dangerous tasks
without the need for industrial
barriers due to their protective
functions. Strenuous, routine
Kuka’s new FlexFellow, which
comprises a lightweight robot arm
mounted on a compact, portable
workstation, was chosen for the
challenge as it is designed to
allow users to share the same
workspace without safety guards.
It has integrated, sensitive torque
sensors on all seven axes, which
not only ensure a range of safety
functions such as safe collision and
force detection, but also mean the
operator can influence and control
the sequence of an application just
by touching the robot.
“We’re solving this challenge
by working together in a series
of code camps at the host site
in Germany as well as here at
the MTC, which is where our
partnership with Kuka Systems
UK has been key,” explains Matt
Rayment, MTC senior automation
programme manager.

ABB shows welding
automation at MACH
ABB Ltd showcased its
latest generation of FlexArc
standardised arc welding
cells (pictured) at the MACH
exhibition in the UK earlier this
month. Demonstrations on the
stand included the company’s laser
welding technology combined with
ABB’s new FlexInspect automated
in-line inspection solution and
YuMi, a dual-armed robot that
made its debut.
The basic options of ABB’s
FlexArc feature either a single
robot or two robots controlled by
ABB’s MultiMove software function,
together with a choice of positioners
and welding equipment options.
Jointly developed by ABB
and 3D imaging specialist nub3d,
FlexInspect is a robotic automated
inspection system capable of
measuring a variety of components
in 3D. It includes its own built-in
adjustable lighting technology,
which according to ABB provides
Kawasaki Robotics has added
a 1000 kg payload robot to its
heavy duty M-Series. Meeting
increased demand for handling
heavy loads, the new MG10HL's
compact design maintains rigidity
and accuracy throughout its motion
range, says the company.
According to Kawasaki, the
MG10HL allows applications
such as handling automotive
floor pans, or complete bodies,
between processes, to be carried
out safely, quickly and accurately
using minimal floor space. For
applications requiring payloads
over the 1000 kg limit, a 1500 kg
option is also available.
The lightweight design of
the MG10HL uses high rigidity
ballscrews in conjunction with
Kawasaki's hybrid link mechanisms
on joint 2 (a parallel link) and
joint 3 (a serial link). The hybrid
link mechanism also removes
the need for heavy and bulky
counterweights, and allows a
compact footprint of 1.2 x 1.3 m.
A wide motion range is another
benefit of the hybrid link design,
enabling up to 4.005 m horizontal
reach and 4.416 m vertical reach.

use of ‘lead-through programming’
for simple tasks, which enables
operators to teach the robot simply
by placing its arms in the required
positions and recording each

also drew customers‘ attention to
its latest product lines, such as the
BSWS-MPG-Plus standardised
finger blanks (pictured). The new
product features an integrated
measurement of parts of up to 1 m3
in a shop floor environment.

versatile, Creaform says that
the system can easily adapt to
different design, volume and
inspection requirements thanks
to an automated turntable. In
addition, TRUaccuracy technology
offers precision of up to 0.085
mm in shop floor conditions.
The accuracy of dimensional
measurements is determined by
the optical CMM scanner and is
independent from the robot.
User-friendly with a short
learning curve that makes it
independent of the operator’s skill
set, the system is compatible with
all major metrology software. As
a result, there is no need to learn
a different dimensional inspection
software.

the system reduces the set-up
