Traffic Flow Around Campus
Please remember that the traffic flow at CIS
will be changing as of April 28, when you return from Spring Break. See attached.
Changes include:

All traffic on campus will flow one way

Secondary students have a new drop off and pick up location at the parking lot at
the south end of the field

There will be a safety barrier installed between the field and the road along the
east perimeter

A safety crossing will be established to provide a safe walking zone from the parking area to the campus

Parallel parking lines will be painted to designate additional parking areas
Other notes:

There will be a security guard at the entrance/exit intersection directing traffic during arrival and dismissal times

Please be courteous to all security guards and others who are working to make
traffic safer

The speed bumps on the east perimeter (back stretch) may not be installed by
April 21, so please drive slowly

There is additional parking available along the north perimeter of campus in the
unpaved section near the courts and the ARC
Drive slowly! Stay off of your phone while driving! Be careful and be courteous to others!
Thank you for your patience and flexibility as the new traffic system is implemented.
CIS wishes you a safe and happy
Spring Break.

CIS Community News
We extend a hearty congratulations to the following 16 CIS parents who recently completed the Developing Capable Young People (DCYP) course:
Petra Berksoy
Karmen Berube
Jody Danter
Eddie Fernandes
Jacqui Fernandes
Late Franklin
Ailsa Keightley
Hind Kilali
Julie Marr
Tracey McGregor
April McIntosh
Philippa Roney
Nicole Ruddick
Cheryl Seymour
Rafe Wunsch
Penelope Wunsch
Should there be enough interest, the course will be offered during the 2014-15 school year.
If you wish to find out more about the DCYP program, please feel free to contact any of the
individuals listed above. We have also included below several testimonials as well:
“I loved the DCYP course. I found the information useful and informative. I acquired a
toolkit of techniques to help create a more healthy and positive home for my family. I feel
the course empowered me as a mother to meet my goals of raising capable, self-confident,
independent people. Thank you so much for offering it to our CIS community!” Julie
“I admire Ms. Angie's and Ms. Lisa's calm and thoughtful communication with children; this weekly reminder to use positive and respectful language was a helpful pause for
reflection.” Tracey
“We go to school to gain knowledge and experience to be successful in our careers, but
rarely do we get an opportunity to go to school to learn to be a better parent (which is the
most important job of all). The course is informative, interesting and rewarding for both
the parents learning the techniques and the children experiencing the effects of them. Angie is a great facilitator, adapting to the needs of the individuals and the group. It is also
great to develop a support network of other parents with similar goals. Thank you!”
Philippa
"I cannot recommend this course highly enough. The course material introduced me to a
whole range of new strategies and tools for dealing with difficult parenting issues, but perhaps more importantly it has encouraged me to really think about wider issues such as
how to encourage children to become capable young people, the importance of allowing
our children to make mistakes, and what sort of discipline is going to be most effective in a
family. The course sessions were both fun and challenging; and it was also very reassuring
to discover that most of us struggle with the same parenting issues." Ailsa
STRATEGIC PLANNING SURVEY
Please take about 10-15 minutes to provide your

MAP TESTING IS AROUND THE CORNER
CIS students will be participating in the Measure of Academic Progress or MAP
assessment from May 5-16, 2014. Reading assessments will take place the first
week and math the second week. (Below is the schedule for the MAP assessment).
MAP tests are unique in that they are adaptive tests your child takes on a computer which
usually requires approximately 50 minutes to complete. It is important to note that these assessments are not timed and students have as much time needed to complete the reading or
math.
That means that the test became more difficult the more questions your child answers corMs. Rita
rectly. When your child incorrectly answers a question, the test became easier. Therefore, your child
will take a test specifically created for his or her learning level.
The MAP reading and math tests help determine your child’s instructional level and measure his/her academic growth throughout the school year.
After the assessment parents will receive the results for your child. Additionally, as previously done with our first
assessment scores in October, CIS will hold a meeting to discuss/explain the scores along with how CIS students
did in comparison to US norms, Tri-State Association Schools and all International Schools students who sat the
MAP assessment.
If you have any questions regarding the MAP assessment, please contact your classroom teacher or, Ms. Rita,
curriculum coordinator, at the following email address: [email protected]

BUILDING RELATIONSHIPS
Parents often want to improve relationships with their children, but sometimes it can
be difficult to know where to begin. Life is busy, and it is difficult to even find the time to
think about enhancing your relationship with your children. What does a parent do?
One of the biggest keys to a good relationship is spending time with your children. Sharing in
fun brings people closer together. It is important, even in the busy world we live in, to set time aside
Ms. Nadine
for your children. Start today and make family night a regular occasion in your house. When kids are
young there is nothing better than spending time with you, their parents. Here are a few ideas on how to fit
quality time in with your kids:
• Homemade Pizza Night: This is fun for kids, parents can roll out the crust and each person in the family can put
the toppings of his/her choice on a personal size pizza.
• Game Night: Take one night a week or one night a month and make it game night. Kids love
to play games and they learn sportsmanship at the same time.
• Movie Night: Take one night a month and make it family movie night. Let a different person
select the movie each night, pop some popcorn and hang out in the living room together.
• Family Fun Bag: Sit down and make a list of all the fun things you want to do together.
Write each one on a sheet of paper and place them in a bag. Draw one slip out each week or
month and do what is on the slip on family fun night/day.
Thanks to everyone who supported
the PTA uniform swap, approximately
$900.00 was raised! These funds will be

“Learn everything you can, anytime you can, from anyone you can, there will always come a time when you will be grateful you did.”
― Sarah Caldwell
It is our nature to explore, discover and learn. To quote Aristotle, “All men by
nature desire knowledge”. The IB learner profile this month challenges us to
be knowledgeable in action, which in one sense should be easy because it is
instinctive. Yet this month we are reminded of the importance of actively pursuing knowledge. Actively pursuing and acquiring an in-depth understanding of
those things we don’t yet know is the challenge. This takes commitment and
hard work but the rewards are limitless. CIS recognizes the importance of encouraging student to develop knowledge,
skills and attitudes in relation to organization, time management, and oral and written communication skills. The aim of
the Organization and Development class is to continue and promote growth and development in each student as a learner
so they may be knowledgeable. We explore the learning process, each individual as a learner and the organizational
and study systems that are best for each student.
