introduction
D I R E C TO R Y
This Directory summarizes information collected on office and
industrial-sector businesses in York Region. Information on retail
and personal services, restaurants and recreational facilities,
healthcare and public administration is not included in this
Directory, but is available for purchase in electronic form or on the
internet. Businesses are listed by North American Industrial
Classification (NAIC) code, which was adopted by Statistics
Canada in 1998 to replace the Standard Industrial Classification
(SIC) system.
The Directory is primarily based on information collected from the
2006 York Region Employment Survey, a door-to-door survey
conducted with businesses located in York Region between May
and August, 2006. Where data could not be updated for a
particular business, data was supplemented with the most recent
information available from previous surveys. As a result, not all
records are up-to-date. In the individual business record listing, the
date the business listing was last changed is indicated.

Then look up the business alphabetically within the appropriate
NAIC code.
To search for information on a business whose name you already
know, consult the alphabetic index listing at the back of this
publication. The index will direct you to the NAIC code under
which the full business entry is listed.
The business listings indicate the name of the company, the
address, including street number, street name, suite/unit number,
municipality, postal code, telephone number and an employee
range (e.g. 1-4, 5-9, 10-49, 50-99, 100-499, 500-999, 1,000+).

York Region is one of the fastest growing regions in Canada and is strategically
located in the heart of the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), Canada's major commercial
and industrial centre. The Region is comprised of nine area municipalities totalling
951,000 people as of year-end 2006 and covering 1,776 square kilometres (686
square miles), stretching from Steeles Avenue in the south to Lake Simcoe and the
Holland Marsh in the north.

Recent business and employment statistics indicate that York Region is increasingly
becoming the location of choice for business across the GTA. Between 1986 and
2001, York Region's share of GTA employment increased from 8% to 15%.
By 2006, there were an estimated 460,000 people working in York Region, including
home and farm-based jobs. This represents an compound annual average employment
increase of 3.9% between 1998 and 2006. This compares with an compound annual
average population growth rate of 4.4% between 1998 and 2006 in York Region.
In addition, a number of businesses expressed their confidence in York Region by
expanding or developing new facilities. Industrial, commercial and institutional
building permits reached $906 million in 2006. As of 2006, there were an estimated
29,000 businesses in York Region, up from 21,000 in 1998. While the Region is host
to a number of large international firms, small firms dominate the business landscape,
with over 80% of businesses employing less than 20 workers. This large number of
small firms indicates a strong entrepreneurial spirit in the Region.
Employment by job type has remained relatively steady since 1998, with full-time
employment accounting for approximately 80% of jobs in York Region in 2006. This
stability reflects the overall health of the York Region labour market. The large
proportion of full-time jobs is also encouraging from the standpoint that these jobs are
typically more stable and higher paying than their part-time counterparts.
Demographic Trends
Since the creation of York Region in 1971, the population has increased dramatically
from 169,000 persons to approximately 951,000 in 2006. By the year 2031, the
Province has forecasted that over 1.5 million people and 780,000 jobs will be
located in York Region.

Since 2001, York Region has grown at an annual average rate of approximately
35,000 people per year. York Region's rapid population growth is partially due to its
strategic location north of the City of Toronto. Benefiting from an excellent
transportation network, a high quality of life and available land space, York Region
has become a major growth area of the Greater Toronto Area (GTA).
Strong growth in the population and employment sectors in York Region over the past
20 years has resulted in a large increase in the demand for housing during the same
period. In 1981 there were 77,000 households in York Region. By 2006, this figure
had risen to 283,500, a 268% increase. By 2031, York Region will have an estimated
500,000 households.
Relative to the GTA and Canada, York Region's population is younger. This is partially
due to the large proportion of the population between the ages of 39 and 58 years of
age. These "baby boomers" made up 32% of the Region's population in 2003,
compared with only 31% of the overall population at the GTA and national level.
York Region's residents are well educated, with 66.4% of adults over 20 in 2001
recording some form of post-secondary education. This is higher than both the national
and provincial averages, which stood at 58.2% and 60.1% respectively. This high rate
of well-educated residents provides Regional employers with an ample supply of
skilled workers.
The youthful, well-educated workforce is a positive feature for businesses in York
Region, ensuring a good labour supply for years to come.
