WINTERFEST
A MINNESOTA CRAFT BREWERS GUILD EVENT
Dedicated to the Fine Art of Craft Brewing
UNION DEPOT

11-59
LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT
Welcome to St. Paul and the beautiful Union Depot! Minnesota
craft beer lovers have a lot to be excited about in 2016, and there
is no better place to see why than right here at the 15th annual
Winterfest.
This year’s Winterfest will host 80 Minnesota Craft Brewers Guild
members over two nights with 45 breweries pouring beer each
night. Ten breweries have been invited to pour both nights of the
fest as they either won Best of the Fest in 2015 or were selected
by their peer breweries as being the best that Minnesota has to
offer.
The Minnesota Craft Brewers Guild wants to say thank you to
our member breweries and brewpubs, allied trade members and
you, the fans and loyal supporters of Minnesota Craft Beer. We
hope you enjoy all of the innovative beers and warm personalities
you are sure to find during this year’s Winterfest.

CRAFT BEER EDUCATION
Educating the public about craft beer is part of the mission of the Minnesota Craft Brewers Guild. Beyond sampling craft beer at this festival, we have put
together a group of panels and educators that focus on various aspects of the craft beer experience.
① 7:15 PM — BEER BARS: WHO REALLY CARES?
Michael Agnew & Rob Shellman (Alliance for Beer Education)
Five years ago, bars serving craft beer were few and far between. Now nearly everyone has jumped on board. But how can you know which places really care
about the beer and which are just copping the trend? Michael Agnew of A Perfect Pint and Rob Shellman of Better Beer Society give the lowdown on bars and
offer tips for telling the real from the fake. Knowledgeable consumers can nudge them all to step up their game.
② 7:45 PM —
HOW DO YOU ILLUSTRATE A FLAVOR?
③ 8:15PM —
THE EVOLUTION OF DRAFT BEER
④ 8:45PM —
MINNESOTA HOPS: WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
Michael Berglund, Surly Brewing Co.
Cans! Bottles! Posters! Let’s talk about how ideas ferment, how a beer needs a visual identity, and whether drinking one or two while drawing changes things
a bit. Surly Brewing Co. is known for bold beer and art, and Surly’s Creative Director Michael Berglund will allow you to peer into the process of creating new
beer and new art.
Matt Hall, Lift Bridge Brewing Co.
Lift Bridge Brewing Co. brewmaster and partner Matt Hall will discuss and provide insight on the the history behind the modern beer keg and explore the
resurgence of the cask — and how more breweries are using traditional wooden barrels to develop new, specialty beers.
Justine Spokely, Mighty Axe Hops
Hops are a key ingredient in the craft beer we all love — but how much do you really know about how hops are grown? Learn more about locally grown, sustainable hops and test your hops know-how with Mighty Axe Hops.

Winterfest is an opportunity to sample craft
beers from great brewers across the state.
Make the most of it by taking the time to savor
the flavor. With every beer you taste follow this
simple three-step process; smell, see, sample.
SMELL – Don’t be shy. Stick your nose deep
in the glass and take a big whiff. Breathe in
the bright earth, spice and citrus of the hops.
Let the cereal smells of malted grains overtake
your senses. Yeast too brings smells; fruit,
spice, sulfur, sour and funk.
SEE – Hold your glass up to the light. Take
note of each beer’s jewel-like color and pristine
clarity (or the stylistic lack thereof). Brewers
take great pains to raise that frothy head. Give
them back a moment of your time to admire its
texture, color and duration.
SAMPLE – Finally you taste the beer. The
sensation is so much sweeter for having indulged the first two steps. Let the sample sit
a moment on your tongue. Is it a malty beer or
do the hops hold sway? Perhaps it’s yeast that
takes the day. And is that a subtle hint of spice
that lurks in the background?

At one time, St. Cloud was the home of six local breweries, but with the closing of the last one in 1939, local brewing became a thing of the past.
Until now. Nick Barth and Matt Studer, two avid homebrewers and passionate entrepreneurs, have teamed up with local professional brewmaster
Chris Laumb to launch Beaver Island Brewing Company, a venture that will revive the rich tradition of brewing in St. Cloud.

Upon returning from Beervana, I realized I had collected more than just a bevy of brews along my journey. The quest for each potent potable
had also tracked in the narrative detritus that makes for a truly epic tale. Thrilling adventures. Captivating characters. Heartbreaking dwarven
romances. But before I could tell this tale, I would need to establish something I had not had in years, a home. I would need women and men
with stout hands and hearty hearts. I would need the various apparatus required to continue my experiments. In short, I would need a brewery.
