Rosemaling Stencil Projects
Rosemaling Stencil Projects The Artful Stencil project by Joni Prittie Rosemåling, or rosemaling, Norwegian for "decorative painting", is the name of a form of decorative folk art that originated in the rural valleys of Norway around 1750. This wonderful art form was brought to America by immigrants from Scandinavian countries. Our rosemaling stencil collection is based on authentic, traditional Scandinavian folk art designs. The project shown above is much easier to accomplish than one would ever imagine. The entire project only required one stencil! We used our Rosemaling - 1 stencil. By repeating the stencil on each cupboard door and stenciling smaller elements from this stencil for accents, the effect is quite delightful. Rosemaling Stencil Projects Rosemaling Stenciled Cupboard Materials: - Acrylic paint - deep red, forest green, ochre, dutch blue - Acrylic varnish - gloss or matt Tools: measuring tape, blue painter's tape, medium size stencil brush, small size stencil brush, paper towels, small paint plate, brush for applying varnish Note: The cupboard was unfinished wood. We stenciled using acrylic paint and then applied two coats of acrylic varnish for protection. Color Guide Step 1 Measure door panels one by one to determine the center point of each. Center stencil on a panel and secure with painter's tape. Step 2 Using colors of your choice or following our color guide above, stencil design on each panel. Step 3 Select smaller elements of your stencil to decorate the upper and lower edges of the panels. We used the side flower and the heart with two leaves. Simply tape off the open shapes around the elements you select and stencil as usual. Step 4 Since the side panels of the cupboard are quite tall, we simply turned the stencil upside down to create a double stenciled panel. Step 5 After all paint is completely dried, apply two coats of acrylic varnish. If you would like a very shiny effect, use gloss varnish. Matt varnish will give a more natural wood finish. Both of these varnishes are washable with a lightly dampened cloth. Rosemaling Stencil Projects There are so many ways to decorate and create beautiful items with this stencil collection that I just could not resist adding some floor cloth ideas to this newsletter. I use ready to go floor cloths that are available at craft stores. These are primed and ready to paint. Just be sure to add three or four coats of acrylic varnish after painting. I have floorcloths everywhere and many are over 15 years old and going strong! Note: the mats are 18 inches x 24 inches. This collection is sized to work perfectly!
