passion was catching turtles, frogs and fish. In college I pursued my passion
by starting Aquascape, a company born of my love for decorative water
features. Installing custom water features in people’s backyards, I realized
commercially available products were woefully inadequate in creating
beautiful, low-maintenance, water features. Beginning with trash cans
and cattle troughs, I designed my own filters to solve the problems I was
experiencing in the field. I earned a U.S. patent on those products before I
earned my college degree and successfully turned my hobby into a career.
That was over 20 years ago. Today Aquascape is the largest supplier of
water features in North America. OUR MOTTO, “YOUR PARADISE,
OUR PASSION®” RINGS TRUE IN EVERYTHING WE DO! At
Aquascape we are self-admitted “Pond Geeks” and love nothing more than
perfecting our products for our own benefit as water feature hobbyists. For

I
have two water features and each
of them is unique in the way
we interact and enjoy them. The
front pond, waterfall and stream is the
entrance way to my house. It strikes
up conversation and sets the mood for
visiting friends or family.
The top waterfall is just
outside my living room
window. We roll the
window open and the
sound of the cascading
water travels throughout
the front rooms of the
house. My kids, especially
my daughter, love to find
the frogs that make the
pond’s ecosystem their home.
At night the lighting in and around
the pond brings about a whole new
setting. Underwater lights beneath the
large flagstone bridge add a really cool
effect making it appear the bridge is
hovering above the water. My wife and I
sometimes relax on the front porch after
the kids are in bed … a nice way to wind
down the day.
The basalt fountain in the
back of my house is outside
our family room and master
bedroom. I love going to sleep
at night and waking in the
morning to the splash of water
as it bubbles over the basalt
rocks. The basalt fountain
receives compliments from
guests because of its scaleddown size and location in
a perennial bed just off the deck. The
fountain provides a great sound and
backdrop at night with the lights glowing
off the wet stones … especially when
kicking back around the campfire.

I
n 2002, about one year after I started
working at Aquascape, a Pondless®
Waterfall and stream was installed at
my house by about 70
contractors on a Builda-Pondless® Waterfall
seminar. At the time, my
kids were 6, 4 and 2 years
old and it immediately
became the center point
of our backyard. The kids
always wanted to be near
it, the neighbors loved it
and Bob and I have loved
relaxing by it since the day
the waterfall was turned on.
In the early morning it’s my “quiet time”
spot. During breakfast, we watch the birds
bathe and the squirrels scamper around the
T
ground cover. In the daytime, the
kids are never far from it; setting
up army men, action figures,
Barbie dolls, and buckets
of water ... the list goes
on and on. Our neighbor
boy (mildly autistic) would
wander from his house
and sit by the stream for
hours … literally.
Now my children are 15,
13 and 10. The army guys
and the dinosaurs are a fond memory
of younger years. As a growing family,
we find ourselves gathering for dinner
near the stream, and we seem to be in less of
a hurry to jump up from the table to clean up
and move on to what … the TV? Yikes! We’ve
added a new stone patio and a fire pit to
increase the backyard enjoyment. And as we
lay down to sleep at the end of the day, we
open the windows of our master bedroom to
let in the soothing sound of the stream.
There’s really not a time of day that we don’t
interact with and love our stream. I can’t
imagine my backyard or my house without it.

It's like trying to describe a day of fishing and not catching
a thing but loving it! It’s like … A day at the beach reading
a book and listening to the waves ... Sitting on a dock at sunset
with friends and family ... Hiking up a mountain stream looking for
the headwaters, experiencing unique vistas around each bend of
the stream ... Kids catching frogs and
asking me about dragonfly naiads ... The
shimmer and reflection of the evening
sun on my ceiling ... The summer breeze

carrying with it the music
of cascading water ...
I
think our pond gets used by my kids more than their
swing set does! The first thing they do when they go in the
backyard is run over to the pond to check on the fish, find frogs
or throw some of the rocks. When it gets hot outside they love to
put their swim trunks on and climb in the water garden and slide
down the big smooth rock on the
waterfall. My favorite time to enjoy my
pond is when it gets dark outside and
the lights come on. The fish seem to be
more active when the lights illuminate
everything in the water.

hat do I like best about my pond? I can’t choose
just one thing but these are some of my favorite
benefits of pond ownership:
• The anticipation of spring after a long winter, the koi come
out of their cave like the ground hog comes out of his hole.
• The pond constantly feeds my imagination. As a somewhat
creative person, I find that the pond is like a painting that
is never
finished and
I can always
improve on it.

dragon flies, fish snails, different birds
(even the occasional visit from a heron
lights up my kids’ eyes).
• The smile on my wife’s face as she
watches our kids explore, discover,
imagine and learn.

cup of coffee before anyone in the house
has woken.
• The indescribable feeling of relaxation
I have as the moon rises, the sun sets and
the underwater lights light up the pond
and cast moving shadows against the
house and the different trees.
I
couldn't imagine life without a
water feature. As a lifelong pond and
aquarium hobbyist, water has always
been an integral part of who I am as a person.
It all started with a 10-gallon aquarium in
my bedroom as a child and blossomed into
a lifelong career and passion. The size of
my aquarium also grew from 10 gallons into
a 200 gallon saltwater reef aquarium and
our newest addition, a beautiful self-built

additional wattage for expansion of the system, or small
voltage drops caused by long runs of wire. Remember the
transformer will only consume as much electricity as being
used by the lighting so choosing a larger transformer for
future lighting needs will not increase energy costs.

THE SERENITY WHILE DOING A QUICK
DIAGNOSIS OF ITS WATER QUALITY.
I’M NOT TALKING ABOUT TAKING THE
PH, MEASURING FOR AMMONIA OR
NITRATES, OR ANYTHING LIKE THAT. I
SIMPLY LOOK AT THE WATER. It’s basic but
effective, if you know what to look for. There are three water
conditions to look for as a sign that something in your pond
is out of balance – green water, muddy water, and teacolored water. Read on to find out the cause and the solution
to each of these.
THE GREEN WATER MONSTER
The first thing to look at is the water clarity. The water in your
pond should be clear but not sparkling. It should be a living
body of water that is filled with a wide variety of aquatic life,
not a sterilized swimming pool.
The water in most ponds probably has a greenish hue. This
occurs because of planktonic algae, which is a term that
describes algae that is suspended in the water, which is
generally caused by an abundance of food, a lot of sunlight,
and a lack of zooplankton and bacteria.
Zooplankton? What is that? Zoo = animals, so a simplified
meaning for zooplankton would be animals suspended within
the water column. Our backyard ponds are filled with an
amazing array of life, and if they get out of whack, one can
dominate over the other. In green water, the plants are more
plentiful than the animals. This can occur when the pond is
new and does not have a zooplankton population yet.
Once a healthy population gets established – usually after
three years – the zooplankton, which are found living in
the rocks and gravel in the root zone of aquatic plants, and
free-swimming in open water, will feast on the algae. These
microscopic creatures will never fully eliminate the algae, but
they usually help keep it in check.
YES, BACTERIA IS A GOOD THING
Another important piece of this equation is bacteria. You’ve
probably heard this term used quite often, and you may
already be adding bacteria to your pond. It is another part
of the pond food web, and is responsible for basic nutrient
cycling. In other words, it breaks down complex organic
compounds into more simple compounds and, in a perfect
situation, they actually digest these compounds down to
inorganic salts and solids, carbon dioxide, and water.
Bacteria is found in the greatest abundance within the filter
media, and colonizing in the rock and gravel substrates of
pond bottoms.
Both string algae and
planktonic algae are part of
a healthy aquatic habitat,
and should be tolerated in
small amounts. They produce
oxygen, remove ammonia,
and are a valuable food
source for a variety of aquatic
life forms like fish, snails, and
other invertebrate grazers.
WHEN A GOOD POND GOES BAD
If you have a well-established, clear pond that suddenly goes
green, try to determine why. Did it recently rain? Have you
been feeding your fish more than normal? Did you lose power
to the pump? These are all valid reasons for a change in
water quality and there are strategies to remedy each of the
situations.
RAIN AND THUNDERSTORMS
Heavy rains can wash fertilizers or rich organic soils into
the pond. If it happens to be a thunderstorm, the rainwater
itself is the problem. The high energy produced by lightning
creates nitrate from the abundance of nitrogen gas in our
atmosphere. This is absorbed by the rainwater, and falls into
your pond. Nitrate is basically fertilizer, and will efficiently
feed the algae, causing small blooms overnight. This is easy
to fix in a well-balanced pond that has a healthy population

The Power of Observation
Understanding and observing your pond is key to solving water quality issues.

of bacteria and zooplankton. The greater the
population of these living creatures, the quicker the
recovery process.
Run-off entering the pond is a little more work, and
may require altering the drainage patterns so the
water moves away from the pond edge if possible.
Run-off water can carry fertilizers, pesticides, oil,
or any number of contaminants depending upon the
area being drained, which can feed planktonic algae
or kill it – both of which cause a serious disruption in
the pond’s ecology.
Another cause of the appearance
of green water is filamentous or
string algae. It doesn’t actually turn
the water green, but it does make
it appear green because you’re
looking through the water and
seeing green algae on the pond’s
bottom.
• It’s rare to have string
algae and green water
simultaneously.
• String algae should be kept as
a short, moss-like covering on
rocks or around plants.
• String algae is hardier and
more difficult to control than
planktonic algae.
• When it’s out of control, it
becomes unsightly and is a
good indicator of an out-ofbalance pond.
• Just like planktonic algae,
string algae grows from excess
nutrients and sunlight.
• Control of string algae is similar
to planktonic algae control
methods.

OVERFEEDING YOUR FISH
Overfeeding can be a big problem and again, an easy
one to fix – just stop or slow down the feeding. This
may be easier said than done, so if you are known to
regularly overfeed your fish, make sure the filtration
can handle it. Adding a larger biological filter than
you think you need, or adding a second unit can help
your pond keep up with your feeding habits.
Generally, two biological filters are better than one
large one, as the second filter also acts as a back up
in case of a pump problem.
PUMP PROBLEMS AND POWER OUTAGE
If you blow a circuit or lose power to your pump for
more than 24 hours, you may see a change in water
quality. There are many factors that will
affect this, such as your fish load,
sunlight, temperature, time of
year, and type of pond, gravel or
no gravel in the pond. If your
pond is designed properly, you’ll
eliminate half of these issues,
but pumps still can fail and
power outages occur. Thankfully,
as soon as the pump is operational,
the symptoms generally rectify
themselves.
MUDDY WATER BLUES
The other two main categories are muddy or turbid
water, and tea-colored or tinted water. Muddy water
is fairly obvious in its origin – soil is getting into the
pond from run-off or potted aquatic plants. Dealing
with, and avoiding water run-off has already been
discussed, but what about the aquatic plants?
Fish can be the culprit, as they’re always foraging for
food and will stir up the dirt in your potted aquatic
plants as a part of their daily activities. A 2-inch
thick layer of gravel covering the soil around water
lilies and other potted aquatics helps with this
problem. You can also remove the soil from the roots
of your marginals and tuck them into the gravel
substrate. This not only keeps excess soil out of the
pond, but it forces the marginal plants to absorb
more nutrients from the pond, further helping with
algae control.
These suspended soils are usually removed within
the settling chambers of most filters, but if the
problem persists for more than a week, flocculent
can be added to the water, such as Aquascape Rapid
Clear. This causes the fine, suspended sediments to
clump together into larger particles that will then
settle out on their own. After a treatment, you may
notice a light covering of sediment on the bottom of
the pond. Simply stirring the water by hand or with a
net will re-suspend the sediment, allowing the filters
to capture it. If you don’t have a settling chamber in
your biological filter, you may choose to skip the last
step.
TEA ANYONE?
Like tea leaves, most leaves that fall into your pond
contain tannins, which are released into the water
during the decomposition process, causing teacolored water. Certain leaves contain more tannins
than others, but the result is the same – brown
stained water. Tannins can also be caused
by run-off flowing through planting
beds that are covered
in wood mulch.
Tannins do not settle out like sediments so they
need to be physically (or chemically) removed. Start
by removing the source of the tannins by netting
any leaves that have settled on the bottom of the
pond, and by regularly emptying your skimmer net.
The most effective way to remove tannins is by
using Aquascape Activated Pond Carbon (see page
37). Simply place the Activated Pond Carbon where
there is constant water flow, such as a skimmer,
biological filter, or stream. The carbon acts like
a magnet and actually absorbs the tannins from
the water. Activated carbon should be changed on
a regular basis according to the manufacturer’s
recommendations. If the tea color persists, partial
water changes will also remove tannins.

water quality issues. Your pond
is one piece to the puzzle of the
big picture, and the more you
understand your small backyard
water feature, the better you’re
able to see and understand what’s
happening on a larger, global scale.


en years ago my wife and I bought our first

FORGET TO …
• REMOVE THE PUMP from your pond and store it in a
warm place like the garage or the basement. Protection
from the cold lengthens the life of your pump.
• DRAIN THE WATER out of the plumbing. This prevents the
standing water from freezing and expanding, potentially
cracking the pipes that connect your filtration system.
• REMOVE AND CLEAN THE FILTER MEDIA and spray them
thoroughly with a garden hose. Store them in the garage
or the basement along with the pump.
PROTECTIVE POND
NETTING
• OXYGENATE THE WATER by placing a small pump on the
top shelf of your pond. Oxygenating the water is not only
for the sake of your fish, but it also helps keep a hole
open in the ice when the surface of your pond starts
freezing. This hole allows harmful gasses to escape, and
oxygen to get in.
• If it gets really cold where you live, you may CONSIDER
ADDING A DE-ICER. At extremely low temperatures, the
oxygenation of the water may not be sufficient to keep
a hole open in the ice. That’s where the de-icer saves
the day. It compliments the bubbler, and together they’ll
keep most any pond open.


WHERE DOES THE RAIN GO?
When it rains, did you ever wonder where the
rainwater goes? Sure, some of it soaks into your
garden and lawn and some of it evaporates. But
surprisingly, the majority of it ends up in the ocean.
I know this may sound strange – especially if you live
right smack in the middle of North America, miles
and miles from the nearest ocean. Excess rainwater
flows into a sewer or retention basin, which eventually
leads to a stream or river which flows to the ocean.
During this journey, the water picks up pollutants –
many of which come from pesticides and chemicals
applied to our lawns – carrying them to the ocean.
You may have heard about fish kills and dead zones
in the ocean with one of the largest floating off
shore in the Gulf of Mexico. The Mississippi River
discharges enormous volumes of water loaded with
suspended solids, excess nutrients, and pesticides.
This concoction of pollutants means the water is
devoid of life.
To keep this from getting worse, diminish or eliminate
the use of lawn fertilizers and pesticides. If we don’t
use them, they can’t get into our waterways.You can
also install a rain barrel to capture the rain, which
you can then use to irrigate your garden.
A BARREL O’ RAIN DROPS
The best way to keep rainwater on your property is to
capture the water flowing off your roof. Simply install
a rain barrel directly under the downspout. Rain
barrels come in a variety of shapes and sizes, but try
to find one that holds more than 50 gallons. It will fill
up faster than you think!
Also be sure to purchase a rain barrel with an
automatic overflow system that directs excess water
away from your house. In a heavy rain storm, you
don’t want to worry about your rain barrel overflowing
and water leaking into a nearby basement window.
Remember, you’ll benefit from multiple rain barrels if
you have a larger roof.
Now that you’ve collected all this rainwater, what do
you do with it? Back in the 70’s, it was all the rage
to wash your hair with rainwater, with claims that
your hair would be silky smooth. It might be easier,
however, to connect a hose to the spigot on your rain
barrel and water your landscaping. Rainwater is filled
with beneficial nutrients and is much better for your
plants than municipal water.
