Avera Tradition of Caring in KELOLAND PSA
In December 2013, the South Dakota Diabetes
Coalition was awarded an Avera Tradition of Caring in
KELOLAND grant to use for PSA airtime during 2014. In
total, the SDDC was awarded $17,000 in free PSA airtime
to use throughout 2014. In addition to the grant for PSA
airtime, KELOLAND TV also provided the South Dakota
Diabetes Coalition with a filming and production crew to
make the PSA a success.
The PSA features individuals of different ages, races
and genders, all promoting the idea that individuals should
get tested for diabetes. The PSA will also direct individuals to
the South Dakota Diabetes Coalition website while helping
to raise awareness about diabetes across the State of South
Dakota.

Member Spotlight: Jodie Barnett
The South Dakota Diabetes Coalition is a diverse group of
individuals from across the State of South Dakota. Jodie Barnett, of
Sioux Falls, has been a very active member of the Diabetes Coalition for
quite some time. Jodie is a Registered Nurse with a Bachelor of Science
in Nursing from Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska. Currently,
Jodie works as the Health & Well Being Programs Coordinator at
DAKOTACARE, and since being at DAKOTACARE, she has also
become a Certified Wellness Coach. Before working at DAKOTACARE,
Jodie worked at Medtronic as a Clinical Consultant in their diabetes
division, and before that, she worked in various clinic positions at Avera
McKennan.
Not only is Jodie Barnett a longtime member of the South
Dakota Diabetes Coalition, she also has Type 1 Diabetes. When
asked about her journey with Type 1 Diabetes, Jodie explained, “I was
diagnosed at the age of 11, in fact, I spent my 11th birthday in the
hospital. At the time, I was told by my doctor that I would not be able to
have children and that I would have a “reasonably normal life” until the
age of 30.” We are happy that Jodie proved the doctors wrong, and Jodie Sue Johannsen and Jodie Barnett at a
is a prime example of how you can lead a healthy, active life, even with past Partners’ Conference.
Type 1 Diabetes.
Jodie has just celebrated 35 years with Type 1 Diabetes, and the care she receives for her Type 1 Diabetes
has certainly changed as well. She stated that when she was first diagnosed, there were only 2 types of insulin,
and you only took one shot a day and there was no such thing as a glucometer. Seven years later, Jodie got her
first glucometer, and it was the size of a small suitcase, and had to be calibrated each time, prior to testing. It took
five minutes to display a result.
When asked what advice she would give some someone who is newly diagnosed with diabetes, Jodie
said, “As hard as it may sometimes be, follow your health care provider’s directions - it’s worth not developing a
complication related to poor control. Be in charge of your diabetes, don’t let it be in charge of you and don’t let it
define who you are!”
Jodie lives in Sioux Falls with her husband, two children, ages nine and a half and seven, and a crazy
wild, nine month old puppy, whom she and her family rescued from the Humane Society.
American Academy of Family Physicians
The South Dakota Diabetes Coalition was present at the American Academy of Family Physicians
conference in Deadwood, South Dakota on January 30th and 31st. Sue Johannsen and Dawn Hahn had the
privilege of talking to nearly 50 providers about the projects the Coalition is working on. There was lengthy
discussion with some providers about diabetes prevention, the Virtual Nursing Project and Chronic Disease
Self-Management. Numerous physicians took a copy of the Diabetes Coalition State Plan as well as the
Chronic Disease State Plan. Providers also expressed interest in having more information on where diabetes
education centers were located as well as diabetes educators. Providers also expressed needing more support for
community information on chronic disease management and encouragement for healthy behavior changes.

In Memory of Linda Young, Mitchell, SD
Linda Young’s family and friends honored Linda and her battle with
diabetes by donating $1,048 to the South Dakota Diabetes Coalition (SDDC).
They have requested we use the funds to raise awareness in South Dakota
about diabetes. Linda had Type 2 diabetes for over 20 years and battled
complications of diabetes. Linda’s brother, Reginald, told SDDC that his
father, Linda, and his three brothers were all diagnosed with diabetes. He
is the only sibling who does not have diabetes. He asked us to pass along to
his fellow South Dakotans who live with diabetes: “Take care of yourself!
Regularly exercise and watch your diet.” He follows his own advice by
exercising 3 to 4 times per week. He has seen what diabetes can do if not
prevented or kept under control.
Linda taught Kindergarten and 1st grade in the Hanson 30-1
school system in Alexandria until 1988. In 1988 she invested in a family
owned corporation and was named Secretary/Treasurer of Independent Oil
Company. She handled the bookkeeping for Independent Oil Company from
1988 to 2000 wherein she retired due to health issues. Linda was an avid volunteer for Avera Queen of Peace
Hospital giving over 1300 hours of her time as well as visiting the elderly and the sick at the nursing homes and
hospitals. Linda was a member of the Holy Family Catholic Church where she taught CCD in her younger years
and during retirement, joined Bible Study groups and was a member of the Catholic Daughters of America.
Linda loved politics and was always interested in working at the polls on Election Day.
Linda’s hobbies and interests over the years were watching her many nieces and nephews in high school
activities where she was an avid fan, collecting dolls, cookbooks and other special collectibles was her passion.
She took great care of her mother when she was ill and thus her interests turned to helping the elderly out as best
she could. Even in the past two years that she was in either assisted living or the nursing home, she was known
for helping out those that were less fortunate than her or assisting the staff.
Linda is survived by her four brothers, Robert E Young and Laurie, Bill Young, Keith R. Young and wife,
Kim, Reginald Young and Deb all of Mitchell, SD; and twelve nieces and nephews, Nicole Stahle, Skip Young,
Brett Young, Nick Young, Kerri Young, Tatum Mahlen, Kim Young, Tom Young, Tony Young, Mike Young,
Amanda Young and Alex Young and eleven great nieces and nephews.
JDRF Walk 2014
The South Dakota Diabetes Coalition attended the JDRF Walk at Sanford Research on January 25th,
2014. Sue Johannsen and Ben Tiensvold were both able to attend the event and represent the Coalition. Over one
thousand individuals attended the event, including individuals affected by Type 1 Diabetes. Family, teams and
individuals were able to visit vendor booths at the event, including the South Dakota Diabetes Coalition booth.
Individuals who stopped by the SDDC booth received a South Dakota Diabetes Coalition business card, and Ben
and Sue were able to visit with many families and individuals about diabetes in South Dakota.
The event was held at the Sanford Research facility in Sioux Falls, and included vendor booths, a pep-rally, a 45
minute walk, and a closing celebration. Nationwide, JDRF has raised over one billion dollars to support diabetes
research in hopes of finding a cure. The South Dakota Diabetes Coalition was well-displayed at the event, and
will surely have a booth at the JDRF Walk next year.
