Dear member . . .
I hope that your Summer was as fun and rewarding as ours
here at bio-synergy. As you can see we have dedicated the
front cover of this issue to the Commonwealth Games. As an
official supplier to the teams involved I had the great pleasure
to attend the opening ceremony and as I am sure you are
aware it was spectacular.
fitness

Not only was the venue amazing, but the performance of the
athletes that took part was World Class. The home nations
and Scotland in particular excelled themselves (greatest
number of medals in over 20 years), and in a small way we at
bio-synergy made a contribution to this.
As a tribute to the all the athletes involved we are privileged to
have an exclusive round up of the event from Sally Gunnell.
For those of you looking forward to the start of the Rugby and
Football seasons, look out for bio-synergy. We are pleased to
have renewed or Official Status with Premier Rugby and to
now be sponsoring many football and rugby teams including
Leicester City, Bury FC, Oldham FC, Bristol Rovers,
Leicester Tigers, Newport RFC, Edinburgh Rugby and more.
To celebrate the “gold rush” at the Games we are offering you
the opportunity to buy the same drink that the athletes used,
Liquid NRG at a special price (see back for details).

his strive for excellence is as
applicable to Newport’s off-the-field

forming this partnership with bio-synergy
is another small step towards us
achieving our ultimate ambition of

having noted the transformation of
Newport over the last three years,
who would argue? From the dark days
of 1998/99 when the club’s average

finished last season as British rugby’s
fourth best supported team - after
Leicester, Gloucester and Northampton
- with an average gate of 8511.

MOTOR RACING
Inside F1:
Peak Athletic Performance
ollowing a hard driving session an
F1 car undergoes a total strip
down of the engine and chassis
and any damaged or worn parts are
rebuilt with fresh parts before it is driven
or raced again the next day. Overnight
while his car is being repaired
mechanically, the Formula 1 driver David
Coulthard’s body receives a nutritional
rebuild while asleep. This nutritional
rebuild comprising a liquid ‘shake’ was
devised using the best quality nutrients
to repair and build the body.
F
So why does the body have to be
rebuilt at night time?
The biggest improvements in training
and performance are not always made
by the athlete who trains the hardest, the
biggest gains are made by the athlete
that can recover the best from training,
and can repair and rebuild the body
repeating the process over and over.
Through a season this produces the
biggest and best gains in fitness and
performance.
This drip-feeds the body with the
nutrients for repairing and ‘rebuilding’
the damaged muscles overnight while
asleep. Ensuring that he is recovered as
quickly as possible from each day of
training. The human body could be
likened to a car, in the same way that a
car can only be rebuilt when it is in the
garage and given time for repairs, with
the right parts to do the repairs and
good mechanics on hand to do the
actual repairing. The minerals in this
‘night-time rebuild shake’ help elevate
anabolic hormones, to enable the body
to grow. Hormones (which could be
likened to the car mechanics as they
Gamma Amino Butyric Acid (GABA).
GABA supplementation is reported to
cause a natural elevation in growth
hormone of many times the normal level,
with increased muscle mass, an
increase in training intensity and an aid
to help quality of sleep by affecting the
transport of neurotransmitters across the
barrier into the brain. GABA is a calming
agent that works to stop excess nerve
signals and thus reducing mental activity
in the brain. Many doctors of alternative
medicine are turning to amino acids to
solve problems of insomnia, where
drugs have failed. I have used GABA for
years and generally find improved and

supplement at night-time, David too has
found an improved quality of sleep after
taking GABA.

enhance the rebuilding process) are
necessary for the growth process in the
muscle to occur. The ‘shake’ contains
the patented mineral formulation known
as ZMA, which is a combination of the
minerals zinc and magnesium in the form
of zinc monomethione aspartate and
magnesium aspartate, with the vitamin
pyridoxine added to maximise absorption.
This product was successfully trialled in
the USA during the1990’s and found to
be very effective at naturally raising
testosterone levels, in some athletes in
the region of 40-50% while lowering
stress hormone secretion, which can
have a negative effect on recovery and
growth. Needless to say increased
muscle strength was found in the
athletes taking ZMA over the non ZMA
supplemented athletes. Each shake
contains a dose of the amino acid

Why do muscles need repairing?
When training either aerobically or doing
strength work, muscles are actually
broken down and damaged. Only when
the body is rested sufficiently and given
optimal nutrition can it rebuild muscle
fibres that have been ‘damaged’ during
a bout of exercise. After repairing, fibres
become stronger and following further
bouts of training can be repaired so they
become stronger still. This is the training
process that we aim to complete if we
want to improve.
What's in the ‘shake’ ?
Does the body need good sleep ?
Although it is not exactly known why we
need sleep, it seems to be important to
allow the brain to repair and time to
produce chemicals to clear up the
free-radical molecules our bodies are
exposed to. When sleep is restricted we
do not function properly and our immune
systems are impaired or even damaged,
studies prove that without sleep we
would eventually die. With improved
sleep we can therefore impact the
recovery process for the better, reducing
illness and increasing resilience.
Obviously the healthier you can stay
the less training time that is missed and
the more training sessions you can
complete and recover from, creating
bigger gains leading up to your next
competition or match. Anabolic hormones
are not only important for growth and
rebuilding, but higher levels are associated
with reduced body fat and leaner
physiques. Also as we age the production
of anabolic hormones is reduced,
veteran athletes (as do older sedentary
individuals) have lower levels of
testosterone and growth hormone than
their younger counterparts. This can
affect their ability to build muscle or/and
recover from hard training sessions.
The building blocks
The whey protein contained in the ‘nighttime-rebuild’ shake provides a source of
the essential amino acids or building
blocks necessary to actually build the
muscles. In our analogy with the formula
1 car the amino acids these raw
materials of the muscle could be likened
to the automotive parts that make up the
car. It is established that athletes wishing
to maintain or increase lean body weight
need to consume around 1.0-2.0 grams
of protein for every kilogram of body
weight per day. Whey protein provided
in the shake provides approximately
15% of the daily protein needed
depending on the amount of training
performed. Although the digestion speed
and assimilation rate of whey protein is
superior to the slower digesting proteins
and it has multiple other benefits, such
as extra immune system support and
reduced gastric disturbance.
Maintaining a lean physique
During periods of negative energy
balance (ie. when training commitments
are increased and calorie intake is stable
or vice versa) when training stays stable
and meals are missed or calories
reduced. The body is placed under
extreme stress. So support via good
quality nutrients are vital to maintain
health. I originally put the ingredients
together some years ago to help maintain
muscle mass and health while dieting to
lower my body-weight when competing
in lightweight rowing. I had therefore
tested the product myself for some years
and had a hunch it would benefit David’s
relentless schedule of racing, test
driving, promotions, media work and
training. For David we contacted biosynergy to make our formula into a
powder and put a single night-time dose
into a 300ml bottle ready to be mixed
with water for convenience. This made
taking the supplement when travelling,
such as to a race for a weekend or on a
training camp for a week, much easier
as nothing had to be measured out just
water added and shaken.
How can we maximise training
from all angles?
Neither a Formula 1 car nor an athletic
body, can be rebuilt and kept running to
perform optimally without the best supply
of quality raw materials, and the correct
environment. The nocturnal nutrition
that we employ ensures that all the
requirements for growth and repair are
maintained and costs very little in terms
SALES HOTLINE 020 7935 5291 OPEN 24 HOURS A DAY, OR VISIT www.bio-synergy.co.uk
of effort, we really believe we are getting
something for nothing, or for very little.
Lets face it by taking a shake before
bed we can improve our physical
condition while asleep. Considering
most professional and a lot of good club
athletes are in the realm of diminishing
rewards for training effort. In other words
are looking for minute improvements
from many hours of training. Then
maximising recovery while sleep is a
very easy investment compared to the
effort expended while training.
Let’s sleep on it
Before we get too excited and think that
all we have to do to get as fit as DC is
take a shake before bedtime and get 40
winks each night, then you’re slightly
mistaken. Remember the basics, the
biggest gains in fitness or performance
will develop from the (‘bio’) synergy of
focused training, coupled with quality
rest and optimal nutrition. It’s a full
package.

top tips
to improve your immune system
ust got back from your summer holiday? Are people around you already talking about Christmas? We’re getting to that time of
year when you need to dig out your winter woollies. You may also be wise to boost your immune system before the winter
weather really kicks in. Keeping you immune system healthy will help to keep your energy levels up, and keep you on your eating
and exercise programme. So here are our top 15 tips to improving and keeping your immune system in tip top condition.
J
Eat loads of vegetables and fruit
- As well as ensuring you get the
right levels of vitamins and minerals,
eating at least 5 servings of fruit and
vegetables per day has been linked to
lower levels of cancer.
01
Eat yoghurt - Studies have shown
that people who eat at least one
pot of yoghurt per day have fewer colds
than people who do not eat yoghurt.
This is because of the friendly bacteria in
yoghurt, so make sure you choose
‘probiotic’ with acidophilus or bifidus.
02
Have sex - Having sex once or
twice a week improves IgA levels
too, and having an orgasm releases
opioid peptides that enhance immune
activity and kill bad bacteria.
03
04 Stop Smoking
- Smokers suffer higher levels
of respiratory infection than
non-smokers as well as having
higher risks of a whole raft
of other diseases.
Eat vitamin C rich foods or take
a vitamin C supplement - People
who have high levels of vitamin C in their
diet can cut their chance of dying of
premature illness by up to 50%. The
optimum level of vitamin C is 500mg
each day, but even small amounts can
help. Adding just one vitamin C rich food
each day can cut mortality by up to
20%. Good sources of vitamin C are
kiwi fruits, oranges, red peppers,
broccolli and strawberries.
05
Eat plenty of red foods - Red
06 foods
like tomatoes contain an
antioxidant called lycopene, which can
help prevent cancer and heart disease.
A study at the University of Milan also
found that it keeps white cells in the
blood (which help to fight infection) in
peak condition. Processed tomatoes are
a better source of lycopene than raw, so
eat tomato sauces, juice and ketchup.
Exercise moderately but don't
overtrain - Working out for up to
45 minutes minutes, 3-5 times per week
makes immune cells more active,
however, extended exercise can do the
opposite. Long sessions of high intensity
exercise like 90 minutes of running raise
levels of the stress hormones adrenaline
and cortisol which can suppress
immune-system activity for up to 3 days.
So, if you are specifically training for an
event like a marathon, make sure that
you drink 1 litre of a glucose drink every
hour of exercise as the sugar can cause
the adrenal gland to release less cortisol.
07
Get enough sleep - Sleeping less
than 7 hours per night can double
the chance of coming down with an
infection as during deep sleep your
body increases production of natural
killer cells.
08
10 Take Echinacea
- Studies have shown that
taking Echinacea helps reduce
the chance of infection. To get
the best benefits, however,
make sure you
take it over limited
periods of time
with breaks
in between.
bio-synergy’s Echinacea
60 days’ supply, only £11.99
Listen to music - Listening to
your favourite music (as long as
it isn't too frantic!) for half an hour per
day raises levels of IgA, a protein that
indicates how fast your immune system
responds.
11
12
Get a pet - Petting a dog or cat for
18 minutes raises IgA levels 12%
Drink more water - Making sure
you are hydrated can help keep
mucus membranes like those that line
your respiratory tract moist and healthy,
thus helping to prevent infection. You
should aim to drink eight large glasses
of water a day.

TRAINING ADVICE
David Innes
a bio-synergy success story
hen I came out of the army, to
keep fit I started to jog and do a
bit of weights. It wasn’t until late 1998
when my son, Lewis, asked if he could
do kickboxing. I agreed and said that I
would join him. Of course, his attention
span didn’t last long and a few weeks
later Lewis had gone on to rugby
instead, but I enjoyed the kickboxing so
much that I continued to go.
W
his was when I started to use biosynergy supplements to give me the
boost I needed as I was now doing
weights, running and kickboxing. In
1999 I did my second half-marathon,
and my first full one, after which I
decided to stop the weights and cut
down on the running to concentrate on
kick- and Thai-boxing. My two
instructors Shaun Tasker and Dave
Wilkins both have good names in the
sport, and have both held British and
English titles in their time, Shaun in
kickboxing and Dave, Muay Thai. The
club is Southway kick- and Thai-boxing
club and is situated in Plymouth.
Sessions are held on Wednesdays for
the juniors and seniors, Mondays and
Thursdays for just seniors, and Sundays
for fighters only. Dave is also a promoter
whilst Shaun spends more time with the
fighters who get paid for their fights. All
three of us are now qualified Muay Thai
referees and judges, and I now also
teach the juniors.
T
he sport is very fast, exciting and at
the same time can be traditional and
demanding. But you don’t have to be a
T
fighter; you can do this art at any level
you like, whether it’s to get fit, to stay fit
or maybe to move up the grades and
become a black belt. Whatever your
ambitions, kick- and Thai-boxing will give
you a good fitness level, teach you selfdefence and give you more confidence
in yourself and your capabilities. Fighters
are mostly professional, although not as
well paid as boxers and other mainstream
sports, due to lack of publicity, but it is
getting more popular and has shows all
over the country as well as abroad.
Fights are now being televised on some
cable, terrestrial and satellite channels,
sometimes attracting big names. These
shows are fantastic to watch. You are
guaranteed a great night of fights with
an electric atmosphere in what can be a
demanding and unforgiving sport. Of
course, even at professional level, the
fighters’ safety is paramount.
e often have shows down in the
west-country, and also hold interclub light contact shows. We feel the
sport is going in the right direction and
the club is doing well, with over twenty
children turning up regularly and a
healthy number of adults as well as a
number of fighters, both male and
female. This sport can be enjoyed by
all ages as my nine-year-old daughter,
Reanne who is now an orange-belt,
can testify.

s a mental and physical coach to
a variety of clients I am always
intrigued why some people have what
it takes to achieve success and why
others don’t. Having successfully
worked with among others Hussain
Osman (the newly crowned WBO
Intercontinental Middle weight champion)
as his mental and physical coach, it is
clearly evident that mental preparation is
a key component. The brain motivates
us to do things repeatedly throughout
the day and being able to understand
how this works can show us how to
create the right mental state to succeed.
For me the two most successful training
techniques that I use are visualisation
and setting goals.

etting goals and accomplishing them
is a good way for people to motivate
themselves. The setting of goals is to
generate realistic interest in achieving
them. If the goals are too hard, a person
will end up giving up, and if they aren't
challenging enough they will become
bored. The basis of my mental and
physical training combines: 1. Trance
visualisation, everything we do starts and
ends with a strategy, it’s the basis of
successful change.
S
few years ago, a study was done
to find out if the mind could
differentiate between actual occurrence
and imagined occurrence. A group of
25 students who had never played
basketball spent 30 minutes per day
for 30 days practicing free throws.
Another group of 25 students who also
had never played basketball spent 30
minutes in a dark room visualising
themselves shooting free throws. At
the end of the 30-day period, the two
groups shot free throws in competition
against each other. Each participant shot

If you cannot visualise where you
want to go then you will not be able to
develop a strategy to get there in time,
or in the best possible way, or even get
there at all. 2. Training Goals, to achieve
total fitness with "relaxed strength",
using the body's natural flexibility to
increase Power, Speed, Agility, and
Endurance. I have been using these
methods of training to improve my
clients’ mental focus, self belief and
physical strength. When Hussain won
the vacant WBO Intercontinental title he
was given only 3 days prior notice for
the fight. But the fight and Hussain in
particular received high praise from the
watching crowd, ringside commentators
and the Sky box office commentary
team. Who went on to say “Hussain is
not the most sophisticated boxer, but he
was incredibly focused incredibly
committed and continuously took the
fight to his opponent Gary Logan.”
ith the right mental preparation
everything you do in life can be
used to accomplish a new goal. Be
honest with yourself, if you are weak in a
particular area visualise what it is you
want and make it your goal to improve
that weakness.

he effects of Ginkgo
on the human body
are truly amazing. Ginkgo
has been used in Chinese medicine
for thousands of years to improve
circulation to the brain. Now doctors

T
everal double blind research studies
have been conducted at universities
throughout the world. These studies
have conclusively shown that Ginkgo
has the ability to increase blood flow
to the brain. The Ginkgo leaf extract
has also been shown to increase
vasodilation and peripheral blood flow
rate in capillary vessels and end-arteries

ESSENTIAL SPORTS FUEL
Oxford and Loughborough University clubs
maintain their competitive edge with bio-synergy
he 2001-2002 season was one of the
best the Loughborough Students’
RFC have had for many years. The 1st
XV were sadly knocked out of the BUSA
championships at the quarter-final stage.
However, this proved to be the first and
last real disappointment of the season.
T
he 2nd XV won the second team
BUSA championships with ease.
They beat Exeter 38-0 in the final, only
conceding 1 try in their 4 knockout
games. The 3rd XV, who also compete in
the second team BUSA championships,
were narrow losers in the semi-final. The
3rd’s came within 10 minutes of setting
up a dream all Loughborough final.
LSRFC also have a Saturday team that
competes in a local Midlands' league.
This year we won the league and gained
promotion to Midlands' 3 East (North).
T
Despite losing only 2 games all season it
took a heroic last game victory by 30-24,
away to the team who had topped the
league all season, to win the league.
The Freshers yet again topped the
Freshers league. On the 7’s front,
we were 2 games from reaching the
Middlesex Sevens at Twickenham after
we lost in the semi-finals of the qualifying
competition at the Stoop.
he increasing demands being placed
on us as players at Loughborough has
made our partnership with bio-synergy
even more crucial. Their support for
LSRFC this season has allowed us
increased access to their wide range
of supplements. Hopefully, with the
continuing support of bio-synergy, the
players can make the coming season
even more successful.
T
uge credit must go to last year’s
club captain Tom Evans-Jones, who
worked tirelessly all season to get the
club into the good position it now finds
itself in. However, the main impetus has
come from our new Director of Rugby
Alan Buzza (England A, Wasps,
Rotherham). He has brought a new
professional attitude to the club, on
and off the field.
