Joan Baez launched her music career in a small
Harvard Square jazz club, and more than a half century
later, we pay tribute to the legendary folk singer with this month’s Great
Performances special, Joan Baez 75th Birthday Celebration (page 8).
Baez was a 17-year-old drama student at Boston University when she
took the stage at Club 47 (now known as Club Passim). “There were about
nine people (in the crowd), and they were all (my) friends,” she recalled to
Rolling Stone. “Then the word started getting
around.”
Today she is still on stage, enthralling audiences with her distinctive soprano. During the
intimate, career-spanning concert recorded at the
historic Beacon Theatre in New York, you’ll see
Baez perform duets alongside an array of superstars: Jackson Browne, Paul Simon, Emmylou
Harris, Mary Chapin Carpenter and others.
“It’s truly remarkable how much Joan’s ties to Boston’s folk music community continue to reverberate,” says Brian O’Donovan, host of A Celtic Sojourn
on 89.7 WGBH. “Our city has a thriving young singer-songwriter scene, and I
am always delighted when I hear many of the artists refer to Joan Baez as
among their key influences.” She has shown multiple generations that music
can be “a force for courage, solidarity, fellowship and justice,” Mary Chapin
Carpenter says.
Boston’s close connection to Baez and the folk music revival she helped
spread across the country is one more chapter in our region’s rich, multifaceted story.
This month we’ll bring other
aspects of that story to light by
digging deeper into our past.
Genealogy Roadshow, a series
that researches the ancestry of
individual Americans, comes to
Faneuil Hall (page 12). During
their visit, the program’s genealogists unravel the mystery of one woman’s
ties to the Salem Witch Trials and explore a local man’s link to Boston’s founders, among other investigations. A week later, Genealogy Roadshow heads
down I-95 for a stop at the Providence Public Library. There the experts use an
old passport to discover how one woman’s family survived the Holocaust.
I hope you enjoy these revealing journeys into our shared past, knowing
they’re made possible by your generous annual support.

Change Is in the Air
Odd Squad is the
agency to call when
you need someone
to investigate
weird and unusual
phenomena. You
know the kind—
giant blobs, or
monsters that have
escaped from books
and are running
around town. Agents Olive and Otto work together using math concepts along with advanced and unpredictable gadgetry to solve those
pesky problems. In a new one-hour special, the daring duo set off to
run their own bureau, and Ms. O must somehow find two new recruits
who can fill their oddly talented shoes.

Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries/
Death & Hysteria
Independent, glamorous and unflappable, Detective
Phryne Fisher (Essie Davis) fights injustice packing
a pearl-handled pistol and her dagger-sharp wit in
1920s Melbourne. But when her Aunt Prudence
opens her home to a psychiatrist and natural healer
to conduct his sanatorium for “hysterical” women,
Phryne takes on more than she bargained for.
Thu, 6/9 at 9pm on WGBX 44
Highwaymen Live
at Nassau Coliseum
The Highwaymen were American
country music’s first bonafide
“supergroup.” Each of the quartet’s
members—Johnny Cash, Willie
Nelson, Waylon Jennings and Kris
Kristofferson—had achieved
considerable musical and cultural
success prior to coming together in
1985. Recorded in 1990, this concert features classic songs such as “Big River,”
“Me and Bobby McGee” and “Always on my Mind.”
Rhythm and Blues 40:
Soul Spectacular
Celebrate legends of the 1960s and 70s
brought together in a once-in-a-lifetime concert: Aretha Franklin, James Brown, Ben E.
King and the Drifters, Dionne Warwick, the
Isley Brothers, Percy Sledge, Little Anthony &
the Imperials and more sing their biggest hits.
Stronger Bones, Longer Life
Discover why healthy bones are the key to
remaining mobile, engaged and independent.
Expert Dr. Lani Simpson explains how the
choices we make throughout our lives can
have a direct impact on the health of our
bones. And she lets you know what you can
do now—for yourself and your children—
to help prevent osteoporosis and build and
maintain bone quality at any age.
Bee Gees: One Night Only
With a string of hit singles, the Bee Gees
became pop stars in the late 1960s. But
their participation on the soundtrack of
the generation-defining film Saturday
Night Fever—with pop/disco standards
such as “Stayin’ Alive” and “Night Fever—
shot them to mega-stardom in the mid’70s. The timeless harmonies of Robin,
Barry, and the late Maurice Gibb are on
display in this 1997 concert, which also includes a special appearance by
guest artist Celine Dion, performing “Immortality.”

Australian
Intrigue
Dr. Lucien Blake (Craig McLachlan) is
back for a third season of crime solving in
his rural hometown of Ballarat, Australia.
In eight new episodes set in the 1950s, the
iconoclastic doctor is pushed to his limits to
find the truth behind a range of murders,
from the inexplicable death of a young
champion rower, to the apparent trampling-by-cattle death of a wellloved farmer. Meanwhile, a new arrival poses a threat to Blake’s job,
and Blake uncovers a dark story behind his mother’s passing.

More Trouble in Paradise
Life on the serene and sun-baked island of Saint Marie is far from a
vacation for British Detective Inspector Humphrey Goodman
(Kris Marshall). Disorganized and gawky, DI Goodman combines a
particular disheveled charm with razorsharp insight, which has helped him win
over his new law enforcement colleagues.
As Season 5 opens, he and his team are
tested when a millionaire philanthropist
is murdered on his boat, and the only
suspects were all underwater at the time.
Also, Goodman’s new hobby is raising some
eyebrows.

events, resources and people coalesced in a corner of the Aegean and
changed the course of human history forever. The legacy left by

Empowering Women
Following the annulment of
her father’s victory in Nigeria’s
presidential election and her
mother’s assassination by
agents of the military dictatorship, Hafsat Abiola faces
the challenge of transforming
a corrupt culture of governance into a democracy capable of serving Nigeria’s most
marginalized population: women. The Supreme Price is a feature length documentary film that traces the evolution of the Pro-Democracy Movement in
Nigeria and the efforts to dismantle the patriarchal structure of the society
and increase participation of women in leadership roles.

Be Yourself
James Broughton’s advice, “Follow your own Weird,” animates this documentary, which chronicles how the little-known filmmaker and poet fought
against the grain of dominant culture to live authentically. His story shows
what it means to be yourself, how
creating art can keep you from losing
hope, and how you can find true
love—and yourself—at 62, or any
age. Big Joy provides a humorous
antidote to the cynicism and materialism of our age.

Public Persecution
Fifty years ago, a littleknown investigative committee led by senator
Charley Johns sought to
remove homosexuals from
Florida’s state universities.
As a result, over 200 gay
and lesbian students and
teachers were expelled or
fired. Featuring two of the victims and one interrogator, this film exposes
the committee’s subversive activities and how its effects are still felt today. It
traces the committee’s origins in the era of McCarthyism and anti-gay propaganda while telling the personal stories of those intimately involved with its
activities.

Reaching for the Stars
Sepideh is a young Iranian
woman who dares to dream—
of a future as an astronaut.
Full of hope and longing, she
watches recordings of the
first female Iranian in space,
Anousheh Ansari. But not
everyone appreciates her
boundless ambition, as her
family will do anything to keep her on the ground. Her mother and uncle are
worried that she doesn’t want to learn to cook, hardly ever visits her family,
and doesn’t seem to be thinking about marriage at all. Will the expectations
of those around her thwart Sepideh’s big dreams?

Dumas Joins WGBH News
Boston news veteran Robert Dumas recently began in his new role as executive producer for WGBH’s nightly public affairs TV programs Greater Boston
and Beat the Press.
Dumas joined the WGBH News team from
WBZ-TV4, the CBS affiliate in Boston, where he
served as the executive producer of the
Investigative Unit and Special Projects. With more
than 30 years of experience covering local news,
Dumas will strengthen WGBH’s multi-channel
newsroom and its commitment to in-depth local
journalism.
“I am thrilled that Bob is part of our our team. He is an award-winning
producer who brings a passion for telling stories that affect our community,”
says Kate Zachry, WGBH News Director. “He is joining a stellar group of
reporters and producers at WGBH News, and I know every platform will
benefit from his expertise.”
Dumas is working with Jim Braude, who took over as host of Greater
Boston last year, to produce a program that brings together local lawmakers,
experts and entrepreneurs to discuss issues of local interest and national
importance. And on Beat the Press, he’s collaborating with host Emily Rooney,
who moderates a lively discussion that examines the media and how news
organizations cover the week’s big stories.
“Joining WGBH is an amazing honor, considering its national reputation
for broadcasting excellence and its commitment to serving the local community,” Dumas says. “I am humbled and invigorated by the chance to work with
noted journalists like Jim and Emily.”

Summer is festival season, and that means there’s a
rich variety of artists coming together for days-long
musical celebrations at locations near and far. On his
Sunday program, host Eric Jackson previews the
Cambridge, Newport and Montreal jazz festivals by featuring the work
of this year’s headliners and up-and-coming acts.
Sun, 6/12 at 9pm
Dumas will draw from more than a decade of experience as an executive
producer at WBZ, where he spearheaded enterprising special reports for
newscasts and special events—including coverage of the Boston Marathon
Bombings in 2013, for which the newsroom received a Peabody Award for
Overall Excellence.
Greater Boston airs Monday through Thursday at 7pm on WGBH 2; Beat
the Press closes out the week at 7pm on Fridays.

Fun in the Afternoon
By Anthony Rudel
99.5 WCRB Station Manager
Every weekday afternoon, sometime before 3pm, Chris Voss pokes his head
into my office and gives me a preview of his daily trivia question, a feature
that listeners enjoy as they make their way home. The question is only one
element in what has become WCRB’s popular afternoon drive show, and,
since Chris just celebrated his first anniversary as host, I’d like to take this
opportunity to give you a little background about how he got here and why
he’s succeeded.
Though he loves music, Chris never intended to become a radio
announcer; he wanted to be an opera singer, and, blessed with a warm, resonant bass-baritone, he seemed to be well on his way. He even got his Master
of Music in Vocal Performance and was starring in opera productions, but the
best laid plans can often go off the rails, and Chris found himself back in
Boston looking for a career that was more stable than the opera world. That’s
when he came to WCRB and, as they say, the rest is history.
After some intense training, the singer/performer morphed into a radio
personality whose love of the music comes across with each piece he plays.
He loves connecting with listeners, especially children, who seem to respond
to his warmth and
passion, and he cherishes the notes and
cards he receives from
listeners of all ages.
Perhaps what
makes weekday afternoons on WCRB work is
that Chris is having
fun, and that enthusiasm pours through the
speakers. But his role
at WCRB goes beyond the afternoon show; after all, who better than an
escaped, former opera singer to host WCRB’s Sunday Night at the Opera? Each
week, Chris picks another great recording and presents it in its entirety, add-

ing his unique perspective. He’s also a fan of art songs—actually he’s a fan of
all vocal music—so, when there’s extra time, you can bet he’ll play some
pretty interesting selections for you.
In June, Chris has chosen some of his favorites, and it’s a wide range:
June 5 brings together three great one-act operas: Cavalleria Rusticana,
Pagliacci, and Gianni Schicchi; June 12 features Carmen in a splendid recording starring Tatiana Troyanos, Placido Domingo, and Jose Van Dam; June 19
takes us to Scotland for Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor; and finally on June
26, we’ll end the month with a dynamic performance of Mozart’s Don
Giovanni. Tune in Chris weekdays at 3pm, and Sunday evenings at 8pm to
join the fun.
Speaking of Sundays, this month we have two specials. On June 12 at
7pm, WCRB is delighted to bring you a performance of the passionate,
intense Fauré Requiem by local groups A Far Cry and Blue Heron. We recorded
this concert last winter at the Old South Church. Then on Sunday June 26,
join Brian McCreath for a two-hour Tanglewood Preview. Brian will guide
you through the highlights of the season, which will include 21 broadcasts
from the Koussevitzky Music Shed. Don’t miss the preview or any part of the
summer season WCRB has in store for you.
Have a great month, and take us with you wherever you go: find our

The Perfect Job
By Mindy Todd, WCAI host and managing director for editorial
Mark Faherty has taken over the bird beat at WCAI. As science coordinator
at Mass Audubon’s Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary, he says he can’t imagine
a job more perfect for him.
“A lifetime of otherwise useless natural history knowledge filed away in
my head is now of use to people,” Faherty says. “And I get to do research that
directly impacts local conservation issues, like our horseshoe crab work and
beach nesting shorebird protection.”
While his current
research projects involve
everything from oysters and
horseshoe crabs, to bats and
butterflies, he says birds are
his first love.
“Birds are art, birds are
music, birds are geography,”
Faherty says. “They are a reason to get outside and explore new places, but also a reason to stare out your
kitchen window because you never know what might turn up—anything

from a wayward hummingbird from the Rocky Mountains to a Eurasian
songbird could be there because birds have wings and regularly get lost.”
Faherty has led birding trips for Mass Audubon since 2002. He has
studied bird ecology for the last 20 years, working on research projects in
Kenya, Florida, Texas, California, Arizona, Mexico and the Pacific Northwest.
He was a counter for the famous River of Raptors hawk watch in Veracruz,
Mexico, and has birded in Africa, Panama, Belize, and both Eastern and
Western Europe.
Of course his primary focus on the radio will be the birds in our own
backyard. “Birds herald the change of seasons and the change of climate,”
Faherty says. “During my lifetime several species have moved their ranges
north into Massachusetts due to climate change.”
The Bird Report can be heard Wednesdays at 8:45am and 5:45 pm. And
Faherty joins me for Bird News on The Point the second Tuesday of the month
at 9am. The program also is rebroadcast later that day at 7pm.
“I love recording the weekly Bird Report,” he says. “I’ll take any excuse to
talk about birds, and it’s nice that someone other than my family, friends or
coworkers will be listening.”
