“What a strange year it has been!
Here we are already in mid summer
although the weather has not been
exactly encouraging. Longing to wear
those lovely new sandals, looking
forward to holidays away, thoughts
inevitably turn to our feet. Over the
winter, I have seen more chilblains
than ever before. Top Tip - Extremes
of heat and cold are usually the
culprit, often made worse by car
heaters, of all things.
Treatment of feet never fails to
reward care and attention. Very often
patients come to the surgery in discomfort and it is to our mutual
satisfaction when on leaving, there is a spring in their step.
Above all else, there is no alternative to prompt care and attention
and unfortunately, foot problems rarely resolve themselves. Therefore,
it is better to have your feet checked out and treated according to
whatever is bothering you” explains Marion.
To make an appointment simply call Marion on 0115 939 3662

Krishna’s vision
for value
Krishna Parmar has helped
thousands of people to see
clearly thanks to her role as
director of Specsavers in
Beeston and Long Eaton.
Ms Parmar qualified as a dispensing
optician at the tender age of 21 and now,
with 30 years experience, she is running a
thriving optical business, providing an
invaluable service to local people.
Ms Parmar opened Specsavers in Long
Eaton in September 1992. She started her
career at Ealing Hospital, working in the low
vision aid (LVA) department before joining
an independent opticians. Then, after a year
she was offered a job supporting existing
Specsavers stores, which she did until 1987
when she helped open Specsavers
Nottingham. She ran the store for two years
as one of two store directors before leaving
to open her very own Specsavers in Ilkeston.
Her strong background and experience in
the profession enabled Ms Parmar to offer
local people a top quality service by highly
trained staff.
After setting up three successful opticians
Ms Parmar’s next aim was to bring affordable
and professional eyecare to the people of
Beeston, so she opened her third store in
December 2007, on her 47th birthday.
The three Derbyshire opticians have
become a popular choice for specs wearers
seeking expert advice and the latest range of
frames and contact lenses, all at affordable
prices.
Ms Parmar says: ’The Specsavers stores are a
great achievement and their success and
loyalty of our customers is a real testament
to the level of service we provide. I’m also
extremely proud of my store teams and the
hard work they put in to ensure we offer the
highest standards of customer care –
I couldn’t do it without them.
‘My staff members are extremely important
and I believe very strongly in giving people
the chance to fulfil their potential. I have
sponsored the training of 21 dispensing
opticians and hope to keep developing their
skills and careers. Some of the team have
been with me for many years and are very
dedicated to the stores.
‘We’ve also become an established part of
the community and our presence has really
benefited locals by offering value for money
eyecare - something that wasn’t available
before.
Looking after people’s sight is a big
responsibility and something I take very
seriously. Clear vision is crucial to us all and
regular eye tests should be part of a healthy
lifestyle - we recommend having one at least
every two years.’
Specsavers state of the art equipment
enables its opticians to carry out more
comprehensive tests, which help to detect
problems with a person’s overall health as
well as sight. Customers can also benefit
from a comprehensive health assessment
thanks to digital retinal photography.
The technology broadens the
testing process to provide a
health assessment of each
patient’s whole visual
system, enabling the
detection of
symptoms for
glaucoma,
diabetes,
inflammatory
disorders and
age-related
macular
degeneration.
Unlike many
other opticians,
Specsavers in
Beeston and
Ilkeston don’t
charge extra for this
service as it is part of
the standard eye
examination provided.
Ms Parmar is committed
to providing affordable
professional eyecare and her
stores offer a wide range of glasses to cater
for all budgets. Specs start from just £25,
which includes Pentax single vision lenses
and a scratch resistant treatment. Designer
frames start from just £99. Students and the
over 60s are eligible for a 25% discount on
designer glasses from the £69 ranges and
above.
Ms Parmar is also keen to remind those on
Income Support, Jobseeker’s Allowance,
children under 16, or those under 19 and in
full time education, that they are entitled to
a free eye examination and help with the
cost of specs or contact lenses, if required.
People in Beeston, Long Eaton and the
surrounding areas also have easy access to a
quality hearing service thanks to Ms Parmar,
who set up hearing centres in both the
Beeston and Long Eaton Specsavers. The
hearing centres offer customers free,
comprehensive hearing checks and
assessments, as well as information and
advice on the wide range of hearing aids
available.

Meet Dylan Willliams, you may recognise him from
many places around Beeston, Chilwell, Long Eaton
or Stapleford. From being your neighbour, playing
football, poker or just enjoying a drink/meal with
friends and family to picking up his children from
nursery and school.
“I’m Dylan Williams, a 33years old born and bred
builder from Beeston. I have two young children
and recently got married at St Mary’s church
Attenborough in January.
I left school earlier than the rest of my year, as at
the time I wasn’t the most academic student. I knew at the time I wasn’t
an indoor office type of person. I was offered work as a bricklayers
labourer and enjoyed working and earning money ‘as most young
people do’.
I was extremely lucky to have been able to gain experience, knowledge
and responsibility, by working for the same company for ten years, also
gaining various qualifications and becoming a respectable self
employed bricklayer.
Recently I’ve established my own company D.W.Building and Roofing
which has already had a huge response from people receiving by
business cards and postcards.
I take great pride in all my work and I am a reliable and trustworthy
person who is happy to give honest quotations for any sized jobs”.

Meet John Dabrowski - “I have recently moved to Nottingham from Sheffield to be near my elderly
mother and help look after her. I have an older brother and a younger sister and am a committed Christian.
I was originally born and bred in Lenton, Nottingham and it’s good to be back after all these years.
Helping people improve the look of their home is something I have been enjoying for the past thirty years
and from which I get a great deal of
satisfaction.
Painting and decorating is a passion
for me and my favourite part is the
look on the people’s faces when I have
finished the work - with a good portfolio of references bearing
witness to this. You could say I was born to decorate. I really
enjoy meeting new people and I find it a real pleasure to work
for them in a private capacity.
If you are looking for a quality painter and decorator then I
would be pleased to make an initial visit, without charge, to
discuss any possible work you may want undertaking.
My specialism is interior painting and decorating and I use high
quality materials to ensure a first class finish”.

helping you transform your lovely home”.

There are many considerations when decorating
and furnishing your home, including; How much
will it cost to create your dream home? How can I
create a show home look? What style would go in
my home? Do I have the experience and time to
organise the furnishings for my home?
Meet Michael Vasiliou he has the answered to
many of these questions and more.
Michael explains, “Not many people have the
time to browse around shops to find furniture and
paint, finding the right colours to start their dream home. Then there’s
the curtains and soft furnishings to create the right style and look. And
when you have found every item you need to decorate your room, it’s
back to the shops again to search for the furniture to complement your
newly decorated room! With that comes the questions, what style of
furniture will go in your room? What style of furnishings will suit your
style of house? Is your room a light room or do you need your walls
and furnishings to be light and bright because a lack of light? So many
things to think about!
Then if you have more than one room to do, you have to start and do
it all again! This is all very time consuming and can cost more in the
long run”.
With fifteen years of experience MV Furnishings make it easy, you don’t
even have to go to them, they will come to you in the comfort of your
own home; “We will put together a beautiful total package, your own
style and colour to create your dream home from an extensive
collection of brochures. Whether you are doing one room or a full
house or just want it decorated, we have many styles to suit your
budget. We have fitted out homes in the UK and abroad so we have the
experience”. To create your dream home Call Michael at MV Furnishings on

Find out what more than 150 people a week in Nottingham
experience - Maggie’s Moment Tours - a one hour experience of
aMaggie’s Centre. Breeze finds out what it is all about...
Calmness, clarity and a cup of tea is at the heart of what Maggie’s is all about.
Maggie’s Centres are for anyone affected by cancer. They are places where people
are welcome whenever they need us – from initial diagnosis or undergoing
treatment, to post-treatment, recurrence, end of life or in bereavement. We also
welcome family and friends, as they can also be deeply affected by cancer.
Every Maggie’s Centre has a kitchen table. A safe place where people can sit and
gather their thoughts over a cup of tea, chat to others going through similar
experiences or speak to someone who can
answer any questions they may have.
At the Nottingham Centre people who come
through our doors for the first time are pleasantly
surprised by the light and airy atmosphere of the
Centre. Greeted by our volunteers or staff your
first cup of tea is made for you. Following a tour
of the building you’re encouraged to think of the
centre as an extension of your home, a place to
find the strength and help you need. Many visitors take advantage of the professional
advice on offer from our Cancer Support
Specialist or our Benefits Adviser. A varied
programme of activities is open to anybody
affected by cancer, from yoga, Tai Chi and relaxation, to nutrition courses and hair
loss workshops.
“We would like to offer people the opportunity to experience their own

As the nation celebrated The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee,
so did over eight hundred Rainbows, Brownies, Guides, Senior
Section and their leaders, which all gathered at Harvey Hadden
Sports Complex to join in the fun. Brian Pettitt Photographer
caught up with them on the day...
They were joined by Kate Royse, the Nottinghamshire County Commissioner and her team,
who were making an epic trip of over 120 miles to join in the eight different events being held by
Guiding across the county.
The girls, ranging from 5 – 18 years, arrived at 10am from Beeston, Attenborough,
Chilwell, Stapleford, Trowell, Bramcote, Wollaton, Bilborough and Toton. The ‘Funday’ offered sixty
exciting activities for the girls to try, from sumo wrestling to cheer leading, circus skills to meeting
rescued owls, a smoothy bike to kick boxing and a safari hunt to a graffiti wall where the girls could
say what they would do if they ruled the world!
The day was put together with the Olympic and Paralympic values in mind; respect and
equality, excellence and determination, friendship and courage, and activities
were organised relating to these values and the continents.
Some girls from 3rd Attenborough Guides were also reporters for the
day. Here are their reports:
“Brilliant, Fantastic. There are many other words I could
use to describe the Diamond Jubilee Event. I loved the
smoothie making bicycle and the bouncy castles.
A very memorable day” Eleanor, 11
Fiona, 11, interviewed the County Commissioner
“I have had a go at the Gladiator Battle and it was
awesome. I’ve been impressed with all the
events but this one is massive and the only one
that has rescued birds. I would most like to try
the Demolition Ball and the hand painting.”
‘Events like this are only possible with lots of
support from adult volunteers and we’d love to
hear from anyone who would like to help us
create more special memories for girls and young
women across the county.’

As a company we
are committed to
saving energy and
the environment.
With this in mind
we have carefully
put together a number
of measures that will either produce electricity
or save electricity.
By changing your existing fluorescent fittings to LED, all with very little
disruption, you can enjoy high quality lighting without the fear of large bills.
The voltage optimization works well domestically and commercially. When
using lighting and appliances ie: fridges, in the case of convenience shops
you have a number of fridge units and lighting on between 12-16 hours per
day. Small changes could potentially save hundreds of pounds per year.
SOLAR PV
Solar pv or Photovoltaic panels produce electricity for your home or business.
A typical 4 Kw system facing south will produce approximately 3,400 units or
Kwh of electricity per year with the feed in tariff and savings you will earn
/save over £1,000 per year this is index linked and householders this is tax
free as well. Great investment .If we include the expected rise in electricity
and the index rise this could make a return on investment of 28% annualised
over 25 years.
LED LIGHTING
LED lighting has taken the industry by storm if you were to change 1 LED
fluorescent fitting or tube the savings are around 70% If a small shop running
10 light fittings with 4x2ʼ tubes in each we could save you over £250 per year
and with electricity prices rising this saving will keep rising and with an LED
fitting running 10 hours per day 365 days per year should last over 10 years.
ELECTRIC RADIATORS
We are Farho Electric Radiator approved installers. These radiators are
energy efficient with a saving of up to 30%. We can give a cost of running on
an annual basis this is carried out with a heating survey all free of charge they
are a great replacement for storage heaters, and even better for conventional
electric heating. All this and a 10 year guarantee on the appliance and no
leaking as with traditional water filled piped heating system.
VOLTAGE OPTIMIZATION
The incoming voltage into your property is around 240v but the equipment
works at an optimal voltage of 220v so the over voltage dissipates as heat or
vibration. A simple to install voltage optimization devise regulates the voltage
to around 220 volts, reducing the electricity wasted. Savings of up to 17%
and a payback of 2-3 years.
Our core business is trying to lower our customers energy bills at a time when
the price of fuel is going up, all of these products are long lasting so a small
investment will reap rewards over the coming years.
WHAT WE COULD SAVE YOU EACH YEAR:
• Solar PV: save over £1000 per year
• LED Lighting: save over £250 per year
• Electric Radiators: save up to 30% in heating
• Voltage Optimization: save up to 17% in electricity use
and improve the life of your household electrical items eg
televisions, audio, fridge etc
Call Reset Renewables for a no obligation quotation and take a
positive step to cut your electricity costs and your carbon footprint.

Wild Mushroom
Stroganoff with herb
Crumb Topping
Vegetable Kebabs
with Oriental Dressing
Introduction
This recipe is dairy free, but a
delicious variation is to add
225g/8oz Halloumi cheese, cut
into chunks and threaded onto
the skewers between the
vegetables. Barbecues always
seem to involve a great deal of
preparation, so to make things
simpler, use one of the ready
flavoured packets of rice as an
accompaniment - if you feel you
have time you can make your own
if you prefer.
Ingredients
1 medium courgette,
cut into 16 slices
4 small onions or shallots, peeled
and halved
1 yellow or orange pepper cut
into 8 pieces
8 button mushrooms
4 cherry tomatoes
4 x 20cm wooden skewers, soaked
in water for 30 minutes
4 tbsp olive oil
breezemagazine 32
For the
Oriental
dressing:
1 tbsp shoyu
3 tbsp cold
pressed
sunflower oil
1 tsp fresh
ginger juice
(grate and
squeeze
juice out)
1 clove garlic, crushed
1 tsp toasted sesame oil
2 tbsp fresh lime juice
(or lemon if preferred)
salt and freshly ground black
pepper
To Serve:
225g ready flavoured Thai rice,
cooked and chilled
Method
Thread all the vegetables onto the
wooden skewers, brush with olive
oil and season with salt and
pepper. Grill over hot barbecue
coals for about 10-15 minutes,
turning frequently until golden
and tender.
Meanwhile make the oriental
dressing by beating all the
ingredients together and
seasoning to taste.
Pour the dressing over the hot
kebabs and serve with the chilled
rice "salad".
Notes
These kebabs are also good
served with satay sauce.
Introduction
The original version of
this impressive dish was
created in honour of
Count Stroganoff by a
Czarist chef for a
cookery competition in
the 1890s. Since then
Stroganoff has been
served at celebratory
banquets the world
over, and this stunning
gourmet vegetarian
version will give any
occasion a little Imperial
magic.
Method
Boil or steam the potatoes until
tender. Drain and return to the
pan.
Heat the milk, pour over the
potatoes and mash well.
Preparation notes
Serves 4
Stir in the herbs and season to
taste.
Ingredients
Melt 15g butter or margarine in a
pan. Add mushrooms and garlic
and cook gently for 5 minutes.
675g potatoes, peeled
and cut into chunks
150ml milk or soya milk
1 tbsp mixed fresh
herbs, finely chopped
40g butter or margarine
450g assorted white
mushrooms, roughly
chopped
2 cloves garlic, crushed
150ml double cream
50g fresh white
breadcrumbs
2 tbsp fresh herbs, finely
chopped
salt and freshly ground
black pepper to taste
Stir in the cream, season to taste
then heat gently - cover and keep
warm
Melt the remaining 25g of butter
or margarine in a pan and stir in
the breadcrumbs, herbs and

To assemble, serve individually by
placing equal portions of the
mashed potato on each plate.
Spoon the mushroom sauce over
the top, and finish with the
topping.

brown.

Let’s take a progress check on our
‘blooming lovely garden.
Lets take a look at our summer garden after our previous efforts to
‘colour it up’. By now we should be well under way with our Annuals
(bedding plants/hanging basket plants etc) and some of our
Perennials should be starting to bloom as well at this time of year depending on which types you planted.
The past month has been something of a roller-coaster ride with
intense heat for a few days followed by what seems like unremitting
rain and temperature plunges that had us reaching for our winter
coats!
This makes life more challenging for our plants - especially the ones
that are more delicate in nature.
Extreme and unexpected weather is becoming the new ‘norm’
according to the weather experts - and we ought to bear this in mind
so that we can avoid disappointment.
We have mentioned sheltered areas in our previous articles and this
is important as wind really does change the outlook fort plant growth
- and not for the better!
All plants really like to shelter (or thrive where shelter is possible)
from cooler, blustery conditions met from the UK weather system.
If you are even slightly exposed to gusts of wind then it may be
worth considering one of the following tactics:
• Wind tolerant
hedge or shrubs
• Double paling
fencing (where the
wind can partially
pass through)
• Tightly patterned
trellis
• Bamboo plants
• Arches - strategically placed to break any wind channels
Try to bear in mind that with man made structures it is essential not
to completely block the wind but to slow it down. If you can then use
more than one method to layer the effect.
If you are able to landscape your soil to create raised areas then this
can really help to bring relief to the areas below it - this takes more
effort and also some planning as the shape of the landscape you
create needs to assist guiding the airflow away successfully.
Remember: a wind stopper works on both sides to calm the area and
give plants a better chance.
Back to getting a colour explosion
But hang on - Winter’s not here yet! We have our lovely ‘colour
garden’ to tend to!
What about getting handy with the bulbs? Here’s a way to add
some extra delight to your patio as flowers come and go in their
summer cycle:
Plant lily bulbs into terracotta pots and then arrange them where
you feel the colour isn’t quite up to scratch - on the patio, along
borders, as collection of pots near where you sit in the garden they are a great way to add a dimension of texture & colour to any
part of the garden.
Here’s how to get those bulbs glowing: use ordinary compost to
half fill a pot then pop in about five lily bulbs.
Cover them with compost and keep them sheltered until they
sprout up - in a greenhouse , a hut or even in your porch. When
they do grow you may need to support some of the taller varieties
with canes - all the better to withstand any sudden gusts!
To maintain them when grown just feed them once a week with
liquid plant food - very easy to maintain!
You can help prolong flowering by simply removing the flowers
as they fade - just trim the ‘dead heads’ back to just above the
foliage with garden cutters. Keep as much of the main stem &
leaves as possible to help the bulb build up its food reserves for
next year’s even bloomier garden!

QUICK GUIDE TO BEDDING PLANTS
Seedlings: One seed each into a small pot
(yoghurt pot), keep indoors until sprouted
& harden off gently over a few weeks plant out when a few inches tall.
Pots and tray, ready to plant: The easiest
way if you don’t have space or time - come
in trays or in tear-apart packs. Separate
ones in pots are easier to plant out as the
roots aren’t entangled but they are a little
more expensive.
Care: Water daily and feed once a week.
Pull off any ‘dead heads’ once they start
flowering.
Try these in your garden:
• Marigolds. Yes, a classic, and with good
reason - a lovely flower and great for kids
to plant as well.
• Sun Flower (‘fun flower’!) Kids love these
so why not? Make sure you support with a
simple garden can. Grows in pot or in the
ground (grow in a pot first before planting
in the ground though).
• Sweet Pea.
A nice good coverage plant which delights
with a riot of bright and mixed colours
(depending on which variety is chosen)
• Rosa Repeats flowering until late in the
year. Olive-green foliage, thrives on northfacing walls.
• Anthemis Masses of lax pale yellow
daisies with silver filigree foliage.
• Geraniums A wide sprawler with flowers
from until late summer. Good mottled
foliage.
• Busy Lizzie. Easy and undemanding
plant with real colour power!
Clematis. Flowers in late summer.
• Petunia. Able to take
the British weather.
SUMMER GARDEN TASKS:
Weeding
When the weather changes from cold
and wet to warm and sunny, a sudden
influx of weeds so get them removed
quickly so that your flowers and plants can
grow unhindered.
Planting Out
Make use of every available bit of space in your garden as now is
the time to begin sowing and planting in earnest. Pots, containers,
window boxes and flower beds to increase your crop of plants and
flowers during the summer. Don’t overcrowd though as they need
growing room.
Ponds
Now is the time to check the health of your pond, ready for new
wildlife. Frogs, newts and other amphibious creatures lay their
eggs in spring and the insects that gather there also provide food
for birds. They need suitable plant life in them in order to create
oxygen. Dead plants should be removed to give new plants more
light.
Pests
As more and more plants and flowers begin to grow in your
garden and in your home, the pests arrive! Checks for diseases and
pests. Discolouration, wilting and brittle leaves are all be a warning
that your plant is ill. Tackle promptly before it spreads.
Watering
When the sun is at its strongest, it is likely that any water sprayed
on the leaves of your plant will cause it to burn so water plants
early in the morning or late at night. It’s good therapy in the
evening!
Our Feathered Friends
Are hungry at this time of year and will eat any fruit bearing crops
so if you want to keep them, get them covered! Netting for low
crops and things that deter for higher crops such as fruiting trees old cd’s hung on string help. Leave some for the birds though - or
keep the bird table stocked up!
breezemagazine 36
• Begonia. A sturdy
plant with masses
of compact colour.
All of these are good summer plants and
will help keep the colours swinging in your
garden so come on - let’s keep it all perky
in our ‘little patch’ and have something to
look forward to as we journey onwards
past the height of summer.
Keep on learning and as always with your
garden - enjoy!

New Beginnings is an art group for people who
have had to take early retirement due to disability or
chronic ill health. Some of our members have serious
health conditions, but we have found that art especially when meeting together in a warm and
welcoming atmosphere – can help us on many levels:
it reduces that sense of isolation; art skills are taught
by tutors and experienced members of the group;
and the sense of achievement when learning new
skills and creating a sketch or painting that is
accomplished is truly uplifting.
To showcase their work, and help others to see
what they too can achieve, they are holding an
exhibition of their art work in Beeston Library, Foster
Avenue, Beeston, starting Monday 2nd July until
Friday 13th July 2012, and they’d love you to go and
support them, see their range of work, and check out
whether this is the kind of group you would feel able
to attend too.

DO YOU LOVE WHERE YOU LIVE?
This summer has been a truly exciting time
for England – The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee
celebrations and the build up to the Olympic
Games has helped to restore the great
British public’s sense of pride in our country.
So what better way to keep that pride alive
than by showing the rest of the world we
love the communities we live in by keeping
them clean and tidy?
Last autumn, Keep Britain Tidy launched a brand new campaign
called Love Where You Live. The national anti-littering initiative
aimed to encourage individuals, groups and organisations to make a
stand and improve their communities, villages, towns and cities.
Since the launch, thousands of people up and down the country
have joined forces in the fight against litter by organising Big Tidy Up
events. It’s been a great success so far, but we need that fight to carry
on - especially when the world will be watching England for the
Olympics.
TV presenter Kirstie Allsopp has lent her support to the campaign
saying: “I am immensely proud of my country but, like most people,
I get a sinking feeling when I see the mounds of cigarette butts and
piles of empty food wrappers strewn along our roadsides, in our
parks and outside our homes.
“It costs £885 million
to clean up the
rubbish on our streets,
a staggering amount
at a time of cuts. That’s
our money, which
could be better spent
on other things. It’s
such a waste.”
She added: “Keep
Britain Tidy’s Love
Where You Live
campaign sums up
perfectly how we can
all make a difference,
whether you are an
individual or
community group, a
local authority, small
business or multinational corporation.
“Get together with
other people to get rid
of the litter that’s
clogging up your
street, your park or
outside your
workplace - neighbours, friends, colleagues – a small gesture can
make you feel like you live in a better environment.”
Litter is everyone’s responsibility and Love Where You Live shows
how we can all make a difference. From the very small action of
people simply taking responsibility for their own litter and
using a bin, to communities coming together to clean up
their neighbourhood, through to businesses,
manufacturers and councils making it easy for people to
do the right thing, every one of us can make a difference
to clean up our streets and restore pride to our local
areas.
If you care about where you live and want to see it
clean and litter-free then Love Where You Live
needs your help. Visit www.lovewhereyoulive.org
and pledge your support to the campaign.
On the website you can join an existing event or
organise one in your area, nominate an area you
feel is in need of some TLC or simply let us know
about your favourite place.
Together we can take action to reduce the amount
of litter where we live, in the places we visit and the
spaces that we use.
