The symposium consists of clinics, hands-on
workshops, and guest presentations all put on
by some of our hobby's best and most well
known modelers. The symposium is one of the
best events anywhere for learning to improve
your model railroading skills, get motivated,
meet great modelers, and see the large model
display. Bring your models to place in the
model display. The more the better!
Visit a Local Club
Troy, MI: With all of the great weather we
have been enjoying, have you paid a visit to
one of the area club layouts? I did along with a
model railroader friend from France. We
visited Chi-Town Union Station in Commerce
Township.
2013 Convention
Troy, MI: Planning for the 2013 Convention,
North Central Crossing continues.
The next milestone for the planning process is the
selection of the venue.
The convention website has been activated and can
be reached from the Division 8 website. As yet,
there is no content on this website.
MDT Video, “A Day at the Car Shops”
Rochester, NY: For those of you who have asked,
the video that Larry Wolohon presented in his
clinic at the February meeting is available from
Despatch Junction [Train Shop] for $15.98 +
$5.25 shipping. Call them at +1 585-385-5570 or
+1 888-259-3024 as their website does not
currently include this item.
Model of the Second Quarter 2012.
Troy, MI: The Model of the Second Quarter
Contest will feature another structure. This
time it will be a tool shed. Like the trestle
(First Quarter), the modeler will be up to his
own “devices” to plan and build his model.
Rules:
1. Shed model
a. Can be built in any scale
b. Can be built using any materials
c. Must represent a real prototype
(made from steel, iron, or wood)
2. Shed model may be:
d. Scratchbuilt
OR
e. Built from a “craftsman” kit OR
f. Kitbashed
3. Minimum details required:
g. Model must be painted
h. Contain track appropriate to the scale
modeled
Incidentally, I was inspired by an article by Jack
Work, “Lineside Supply Shed” in the September
1958 edition of Model Railroader. You might want
to build the model that Jack described.

This Month’s Clinic
This month’s clinic was “The Advantages and Challenges of Model in S (Gauge)” by Brooks Stover
Brooks presented a very interesting and entertaining clinic on modeling in S gauge. He presented the
pros and cons of modeling and included the variants of S scale modeling (viz. a. viz. different wheel
sizes as an option provided by vendors).
All in all, this clinic was an eye opener for many in the audience including yours truly.
