It’s based on CANBUS (automotive) and will be an open standard. The net’s purpose it to operate all layout accessories. The Winner Troy, MI: The winner of the Model of the First Quarter 2012 with a very well constructed and detailed wooden trestle is Tom Weiss. The 5th annual Michiana Model Railroad Symposium Elkhart. Indiana: The 5th annual Michiana Model Railroad Symposium will be held Friday and Saturday April 13th and 14th at the National New York Central Railroad Museum in Elkhart. Indiana. The museum is alongside the former NYC mainline to Chicago where upwards of a hundred trains pass by ever day. More than enough trains to satisfy even the most demanding railfans among us! VOTE! Troy, MI: Two elections are underway: o National Election: Ballots were included in the NMRA Magazine, February issue National elections. Ballots must be postmarked by April 10 and received by April 15 to be counted. o North Central Region: Ballots were included in the Spring 2012 issue, page 14 of the Hotbox for the region’s election of officers. The symposium is one of the best events anywhere for learning to improve your model railroading skills, get motivated, meet great modelers, and see the large model display. Bring your models to place in the model display. The more the better! Visit a Local Club Troy, MI: With all of the great weather we have been enjoying, have you paid a visit to one of the area club layouts? I did along with a model railroader friend from France. We visited Chi-Town Union Station in Commerce Township. 2013 Convention Troy, MI: Planning for the 2013 Convention, North Central Crossing continues. The next milestone for the planning process is the selection of the venue. The convention website has been activated and can be reached from the Division 8 website. As yet, there is no content on this website. Troy, MI: The Model of the Second Quarter Contest will feature another structure. This time it will be a tool shed. Like the trestle (First Quarter), the modeler will be up to his own “devices” to plan and build his model. Rules: 1. Shed model a. Can be built in any scale b. Can be built using any materials c. Must represent a real prototype (made from steel, iron, or wood) 2. Shed model may be: d. Scratchbuilt OR e. Built from a “craftsman” kit OR f. Kitbashed 3. Minimum details required: g. Model must be painted h. Contain track appropriate to the scale modeled Incidentally, I was inspired by an article by Jack Work, “Lineside Supply Shed” in the September 1958 edition of Model Railroader. You might want to build the model that Jack described. This cigar store is a remnant from the gold rush days. Joel also displayed crossbucks with working red flashing lights. Joel installed from red flashing LEDs on a commercially available crossbuck. He built the model from a laser kit by American Model Builders. Jim added details not included with the kit. making using copper wire for trunks. The larger station is modeled after the Mt. Prinction station known used at Silver Ledge. The smaller station will be up in the mountains as the Gold Bug Ridge station. he is building from a South River Model Works kit. This HO scale model is incomplete and represents a weekend’s work. Phil estimates that an additional 4 times that amount of work is required to complete the model. Bill Moore brought in a current project, the development of an operating system for his railroad using car-cards. The system is for the “Requiem Railroad” and is based on Albion Software’s “ShitIt!” program. Bill Gawthrop brought in the only S scale piece John Gavasso offered an American Flyer Pacific of rolling stock he owns, a box car lettered for B&O Sentinel Service. decorated in New Haven paint. Bill does own three American Flyer train sets, two from his boyhood days. Page 4 of 7 Th e Monthly Newsletter of Division 8 North Central Region of the NMRA CAR HOUSE March 15, 2012 Ron King offered the Montclair, NY station in Rick Ware built the HO scale C&O depot mostly from HO scale. The prototype was built in 1890 and was torn down in 1953. Ron scratchbuilt the model from wood and styrene. The windows are from Grandt Line and SS Ltd.. scratch. The walls are made from styrene and the roof is from cardstock. Windows, doors, bay window, and chimney are parts by Quality Craft. The C&O standard depot which represents the second depot at Cass, WV is not quite finished per Rick. John Jackson brought in a current project in HO scale. This model is a cement plant which John is kit-bashing using the Walthers Cornerstone “Glacier Gravel” kit as the base for the grinding building. John also displayed a model of the electrostatic precipitator (early 1970’s version) and dust collector. This model has the same Walthers pedigree as the grinding building. Rad Jones Jerry Shanek brought in his cousin’s old Brooks Stover offered 2 S scale twin hoppers lettered American Flyer train circa 1958-60. for the Buffalo Creek & Gauley. These hoppers are available from S Helper Service in 4 road numbers. displayed an N scale small stone station. The model is based on an article, “Adrian Train Station” by Ed a nineteen year old who worked out the details to be a vendor. Dan Lewis brought in 3 N scale examples of Milwaukee Road stations. The prototypes for these stations were found on the North Montana Line. Jerry also offered an example of (G scale) track damage (his back yard) from a falling tree limb. Dave plans to paint and letter the car for the Detroit & Mackinac. He plans to use decals that he made. a book, “Cincinnati Union Terminal.” The book contains a wealth of information about the construction (1933) and use of the terminal. Larry Wolohon brought in a Borden Milk Car in Dave Thornton offered a book on stations of the New S scale and a covered hopper in O scale. Larry also displayed different O scale couplers. Page 6 of 7 Th e Monthly Newsletter of Division 8 North Central Region of the NMRA CAR HOUSE March 15, 2012 This Month’s Clinic This month’s clinic was “The Advantages and Challenges of Model in S (Gauge)” by Brooks Stover Brooks presented a very interesting and entertaining clinic on modeling in S gauge. He presented the pros and cons of modeling and included the variants of S scale modeling (viz. a. viz. different wheel sizes as an option provided by vendors). All in all, this clinic was an eye opener for many in the audience including yours truly. .
