With the click of a button, photographers record the defining moments of our world and our time. The ugliness of war. The pain of poverty. The ecstasy of victory. The triumph of redemption. This exhibit includes powerful photography and storytelling, both in print and digital formats, plus an original Newseum film. Immersive interactive kiosks allow visitors to access hundreds of interviews with Pulitzer Prize winning–photographers, see their portfolios and hear the stories behind the photos. HISTORY OF THE PULITZER PRIZES The Pulitzer Prizes are named after 19th-century newspaper publisher Joseph Pulitzer, who established the annual journalism awards in his will. First presented in 1917 for work published in 1916, the prestigious awards represent excellence in journalism, literature, music and drama. The prizes are awarded annually by the Columbia University School of Journalism, which Pulitzer endowed. 2016 marks the 100th awarding of the Pulitzer Prizes. The exhibit features the most comprehensive collection of Pulitzer Prize–winning photographs ever assembled. The images represent every Pulitzer Prize photography winner since 1942, when the award was first presented. Since 1968, two prizes — one for breaking news photography and one for feature photography — have been awarded each year. Visitors can view 80 large-format framed photographs with labels describing the dramatic stories of how the photographers captured the images. The exhibit includes an original Newseum-produced film featuring the photographers’ stories. Visitors also can explore interactive stations containing more than 1,200 images and 15 hours of video interviews with photographers.
