Original material fills out the always engaging – and danceable – repertoire. Stephen Blanton heads up guitar and vocals. Steve is a 30-year+ veteran who has shared the stage with Koko Taylor, Lonnie Mack, Ronnie Earl, Debbie Davies, Deborah Coleman, and a host of others. Twice-nominated for the “Keeping the Blues Alive” award as producer/host of 88.7fm WNCW’s Saturday Night House Party, Steve brings a classic “less-is-more” style to his guitar work in CITIZEN MOJO. Tim Clement brings an exemplary musical knowledge and feel on bass guitar. A music professional for other 30 years, Tim’s talent is reflected well in the company he has kept over the years, such as Jerry Eubanks, Paul Riddle, and Rick Willis of the Marshall Tucker Band. Rob Fender, also on guitar and vocals, has developed a unique, gritty, and soulful style – and is one of the best kept secrets of the blues scene. He has toured throughout the East coast playing with many bands over the past 20 years, and has shared the stage with many musical luminaries including The Allman Brothers, .38 Special, and Buddy Guy. Brad Curtioff brings a distinct flavor to the band with his powerful keyboard leads. Brad cut his teeth in several rock bands playing keyboards, bass, and mandolin, all while pursuing a demanding classical music degree … and afterwards, continued to broaden his musical palette to include blues, jazz, rock, funk, and soul. Tim Blackwell holds it all together on drums. He has more than 25 years of playing and recording experience, and has performed with jazz artists such as Ellis Marsalis, Scott Henderson, and Jeff Berlin. Tim’s passion for all genres and styles of music gives him versatility in a wide variety of musical settings. His greatest satisfaction comes from creating a vibe that makes the tune groove. Don’t miss this breath of NC mountain air by way of CITIZEN MOJO! But now we need physical presence, and with your help, we are going to get The Blues Hall of Fame building built in Memphis, Tennessee! Doesn’t this project sound important and exciting? If not us, who? If not now, when? After winning the BMA Matt has toured extensively over the past year to further develop his versatile style. He has now released a second CD, Tappin’ That Thang, on the VizzTone label. With 8 out of 11 original songs, the new CD covers Rock, Soul, Gospel and Matt’s signature low down Blues. Hill may be busting it out to take it to a whole new level, but he’s still very much On The Floor! Matt Hill & the Deep Fryed 2 break new ground with Tappin’ That Thang — untamed, unrestrained, and uncensored! Waiting For The Phone To Ring — Chris O’Leary Band (VizzTone) Chris O'Leary stepped into the spotlight with his debut CD, Mr. Used To Be, which won the Blues Blast Music Award for Best New Artist Debut. He has now followed up with his latest release, Waiting for The Phone To Ring, on the VizzTone Lable. The record is made up of mostly live performances, with musical interplay that seems to bring the listener into the room with the band. Fat guitar and harmonica tones, pumping horns, keys, background vocals, upright bass, and drums fall in behind O’Leary’s naturally powerful vocals. All thirteen songs are Chris O’Leary originals – West-Coast, Chicago and New Orleans flavors with moving, funny, and incisive lyrics over killer grooves. Each song has its own mood and personality, but they all come together to make a complete, cohesive contemporary Blues & Roots album that just oozes vintage cool. Rooster Rag — Little Feat (Rounder Label) Easily one of the hardest working bands in show biz, today’s Little Feat is a six-member powerhouse that ably carries on the group’s tradition of deftly blending Rock, Blues and R&B to create a jammin’ blend of Americana that has earned accolades from critics, fellow musicians and fans alike for over four decades. Little Feat's new album, Rooster Rag features 10 brand new original songs including four co-writes with Grateful Dead lyricist Robert Hunter plus two blues classics, one from Mississippi John Hurt and one from Willie Dixon. The result is a compelling album of funkified Feat guaranteed to please longtime fans while at the same time attracting new ears and, shall we say…feats! (Source: Blues Fest Guide) From Blind Raccoon Records: N E W S Michael Frank, long time friend, musical partner and business manager for David "Honeyboy" Edwards, has announced that in honor of and tribute to Mr. Edwards, The Honeyboy Edwards Fund for the Blues has been established within the National Blues Museum in St. Louis MO. Preparations for this fund have been underway since medical issues forced Honeyboy’s retirement in July 2011 after 83 years of performing. The purpose of the fund is to acknowledge the contributions of other elders of the blues such as Robert Lockwood, Homesick James, Henry Townsend and Pinetop Perkins. This will be done through providing scholarships to blues workshops, internships, camps and other events teaching blues history, musicianship, and the business of sustaining a career in the blues business. Contributions to this fund may be made to The National Blues Museum and designated to the: Honeyboy Edwards Fund for the Blues: c/o Robert J. Endicott, President of the Board, NBM Bryan Cave LLP One Metropolitan Square 211 N. Broadway, Suite 3600 St. Louis, Missouri 63102 A Tribute Benefit Concert is planned for Wednesday, October 19, in Chicago, IL at Buddy Guy’s LEGENDS blues club. For information about the fund and the concert, please contact Barbara Hammerman at 253.858.4435. AUGUST 2012 SEVERN After the Fall—Debbie Davies (M.C. Records) Veteran Debbie Davies has performed with a who's who of contemporary blues greats. Names include John Mayall, Albert Collins, Tab Benoit, Kenny Neal, James Cotton, Mick Taylor, Peter Green, Coco Montoya, Duke Robillard, and Charlie Musselwhite. That's some pretty good company, and critics and fans alike have taken notice. In 1997 and 2010, the Los Angeles native grabbed the Blues Music Award honors for Best Female Contemporary Blues Artist. In 2012, Debbie finds a new home with Long Island NY’s M.C. Records. Her debut for the label [her 11th album total] is called After the Fall, and the album of all originals reflects on themes including the passing of her good friend Robin Rogers. We enjoyed After the Fall so much, we made it our CD of the Month for July. (Source: TheBluesMobile.com) (From Blues411.com:) “What we have is a veteran Blues icon staying vital and getting better and better with each passing release. After The Fall has a depth to it that is all to rare in today’s music. It speaks truthfully of, as Ms. Etta James said, “Life, Love and the Blues,” and if you have a soul you will enjoy this release.” Doin’ What It Takes—Lloyd Jones (Reference Records) I was turned on to this tasty disc from Lloyd Jones back in January, and now that I have my own copy I can tell you that this is one of the freshest and unexpected surprises of the year for me, and it’s very funky too! The opening “Bend in the River” jumps right at you with its churning guitar riffs, soulful B3, and Jones’ tantalizing vocals. This first cut and the next five that follow are strong tunes, making it clearly evident that this is one heck of an album! Hopefully this CD will allow Lloyd Jones to attain the nationwide attention he deserves for putting this excellent project together. Last but not least, I suspect that Mr. Jones’ new CD will make it onto many 2012 “best of” lists too. I can tell you that it will likely be on my top ten, as Doin’ What It Takes is so neatly crafted and precisely conceived from beginning to end. (Source: BluesWax / Bob Putignano) I Can Make That Happen—Johnnie Bassett (Sly Dog Records) I’ll never forget the first time I heard Johnnie Bassett’s music almost 20 years ago. I knew he was someone worth keeping my ear on. The quality in his music is from another era that brought us music from people like B.B., Guitar Slim, Lowell Fulson, Robert Nighthawk, and T-Bone. This CD is full of strong, steady songs that don’t miss a beat. Everyone is going to gravitate toward different songs on the disc, but there is nothing to not like unless you really prefer hard blues rock. This is a traditional blues album that is a safe bet for any blues fan. You can nitpick which songs are the best all you want, but you have all the makings of a classic album here. The songwriting is witty and can go toe-to-toe with some legends. Bassett’s guitar licks are sweet as honey. The band, The Brothers Groove, is tight. The Motor City Horns appear on about four songs so you get a well-rounded play off multiple instruments that creates a total song worth listening to. Kudos to the Bassett Hound and crew! (Source: BluesWax / Kyle Palarino) Looking Forward Looking Back — Eddie Martin (Blueblood Records) Eddie Martin does a 180 degree shift from last year’s solo acoustic release by plugging in his guitar while getting backing from a band filled with horn players. This time the all-original material pays tribute to the rocking blues of T-Bone Walker, Johnny “Guitar” Watson and Elmore James. Martin is right in the middle of everything, handling all of the vocals and guitar parts while adding doses of harmonica and piano. It doesn’t take Martin long to establish that he has a real affinity for the music he is paying homage to. Martin’s frantic slide work will keep your blood pumping — but the disc doesn’t suffer any momentum when the pace slows and Martin shows he can navigate a chromatic harp. While they don’t blaze any new trails here, Martin and his friends obviously had a lot of fun with this project. The end result is an unrelenting party with multitalented Martin as the master of ceremonies. I now have a sneaking suspicion that there are similar gems waiting to be discovered amongst Martin’s eleven previous recordings. You can mark this one down as well-worth a listen. (Source: Blues Blast / Mark Thompson (8) Bluesletter Andy Griffith – A Serious Musician (June 1, 1926 – July 3, 2012) Andy Samuel Griffith was an American actor, television producer, Grammy Awardwinning Southern-gospel singer, and writer. As a student at Mount Airy High School (N.C.), Griffith cultivated an interest in the arts and participated in the school's drama program. Griffith learned to sing and play trombone from a local minister who led the town’s brass band. A growing love of music, particularly swing, would change his life. After graduating from high school in 1944, he became a student at the University of North Carolina where he was a member of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, a national music fraternity for men. He graduated with a bachelor of music degree in 1949 Beginning in the early 1950s, Griffith made various recordings – comic monologues, old-time, hymns, and what we now call Americana. In 1959 he released an album titled Andy Griffith Shouts the Blues and Old Timey Songs, which includes a guest appearance by bluesmen Brownie McGhee and Sonny Terry. Griffith sang as part of some of his acting roles, most notably in A Face In The Crowd and in many episodes of both The Andy Griffith Show and Matlock. In addition to his recordings, he made an album of upbeat country and gospel tunes during the run of The Andy Griffith Show, which included a version of the show's theme sung by Griffith under the title "The Fishin' Hole." In recent years, he recorded successful albums of classic Christian hymns – his most successful was the 1996 release I Love to Tell the Story: 25 Timeless Hymns, which was certified “platinum.” In 2008 Griffith appeared in country singer Brad Paisley's music video "Waitin' on a Woman" (—R.M.) While researching Griffith’s musical history, I came across someone’s home-made memorial album titled “Rock, Blues, Old Timey Songs.” What a great compilation this would be on a roots music record label! Slipped Discs … Demagogue in Denim By Rev. Billy C. Wirtz Damn, I wish I had thought of that title, but then again, I wish I’d thought of almost everything in A Face In the Crowd. For the past thirty years, I have listed Night Of The Hunter as my all-time favorite movie. A Face In The Crowd just took that title belt. When I wrote my column about Andy Griffith, it had been nearly a decade since I had seen the movie. The parallels between this movie and events as recent as last week continue to move this picture from interesting to lock–your-doors chilling in its surreal foreshadowing of July 2012. Free Man In the Morning As a instrumental version of “Key To The Highway” plays in the background, we roll up on an idyllic town square in Arkansas. Patricia Neal is a reporter with the local radio station, doing a “man on the street” series of interviews. When she decides to enter the local drunk tank, we descend from Mayberry to Cape Fear. The hoboes are surly and filthy. The main holding tank is for whites and in the background a cell resembling an animal stall houses the lone black inmate. Her attempts to get some humor out of the men result in an obscene impression of a jackass by real-life southern comic Rod Brasfield. The sheriff kicks a sleeping form under a blanket and we get our first glimpse of the vile, lecherous drifter named Lonesome Rhodes. He eyes Neal from head to toe and pulls out his guitar. Running his hands gently over it, her proceeds to inform her: “You see, unlike a woman, I can always count on this guitar. Yeah, when she get’s out of tune, I just give her a little twist and she straightens right out.” The word “twist” is delivered with a snarl and a laugh sinister beyond words. He then proceeds to hit an “E” chord and sing: “I’m a thousand miles from home...” This is Hollywood’s first and last use of the blues at it’s most stripped-down, bare-bones honesty. … [Read the complete article at BluesWax.com] A Face In The Crowd is the darkest movie I’ve ever seen; it may have forever spoiled The Andy Griffith Show for me. There’s not one single moment of comic relief, none. Forget Oh Brother Where Art Thou? — this is the real post-war South. I won’t spoil it for you, but check out the scene at the end briefly hinting that Rhodes’ true personality has been hidden the entire time. Rev. Billy C. Wirtz is a weekly columnist at BluesWax. Each week he finds artists, albums, and music that you should know about. He also plays piano. His radio show, Rev. Billy’s Rhythm Revival, is available in podcast. To hear the latest, go to Rev.
