Game Animals of the World
The largest of all living crocodiles, reaching lengths of more than 7 m (23’) and weights
exceeding 1000kg (2,200 lb). Commonly in marine situations, including mangrove
swamps, estuaries and open ocean, but also penetrates deeply up river systems. Fish,
mammals, birds and other animals are eaten, as well as being the most dangerous of
man-eaters. It is on the cards to reintroduce trophy hunting in parts of northern
Australia as the population has rebounded and cases of man-eating are increasing.

HUNTABLE CROCODILES OF THE WORLD
Many of the world’s crocodile species are classified as threatened, or endangered, but
three can be included on the trophy list of hunters. It is also possible that one, or
more, of the South American caiman species can be hunted but this is unclear. Even
these three species were brought to the brink by over-hunting, mainly to feed the
demand for their belly skins for producing leather. This trade is still supplied but
mainly from crocodile ranches, as wild harvesting is largely prohibited.

Nile crocodile
A large crocodile that can reach 5.5 m (18’) in length (larger specimens have been claimed
up to 6.5 m (21.3’)) and weights in excess of 1000 kg (2,200 lb). Occupies rivers, lakes,
dams, marshes and estuaries and in recent years has become abundant in some areas of the
tropics and subtropics. Feeds mainly on fish but also opportunistically hunts mammals,
including man. Can be hunted in most range states where trophy hunting is permitted.
Most trophies are taken in Zambia and Tanzania.
