Benefits of Cognitive Stimulation
and Cranium Crunches
Recent research has shown it is possible to
maintain, or even improve, our memory
ability in older adulthood. Unfortunately, we
have not yet developed a “pill” that
permanently improves memory. However,
research has demonstrated that a combination
of mental stimulation, physical exercise, and
social engagement can dramatically reduce the
chances of developing memory or cognitive
impairment. We do many brain games here at
Governor’s Walk but specifically the Cranium
Crunches that we do, have been designed to
target specific areas of the brain and cognitive
abilities, such as concentration, finding words,
reduction of intrusive thoughts, and making
new memories of recent events. The Cranium
Crunches have been specifically designed
based on research and to target key regions of
the brain. Scientists have discovered that
mental puzzles and exercises can stimulate the
dendrites (memory storage compartments) of
your brain cells. Severe mental decline is
usually caused by disease, whereas most agerelated losses in memory simply result from
inactivity and a lack of mental exercise and
stimulation. Just like physical exercise, when
it comes to your brain, "use it or lose it."
Research shows that being around other
people is good for your memory. Close ties
with others seem to improve mental
performance. Maintain social connections for
your mind's sake. Take a look at an example
of one of the Cranium Crunches that we in our
groups and come and join us!
If you are stuck on an answer come see Katie,
first one to get them both right will get a
prize!
