Carolinas PGA Section Newsletter October 2, 2013 Carolinas PGA Goes Big on Patriot Golf Day 2013 The Carolinas PGA has been leading the way in the PGA of America for Patriot Golf Day. Each year members of the CPGA think of ways to go above and beyond to make Patriot Golf Day bigger and better. This year the CPGA had over 82% of the total facilities in the Section with PGA Professionals register an event making our total 477 registered facilities. The CPGA finished third out of all the PGA Sections for percent participation, which is an outstanding feat for the largest Section. Patriot Golf Day is one of the largest fundraisers of which The PGA of America is a part. This event has allowed golf clubs to show their support for the children and spouses of military men and women who have been killed or disabled while serving our country. Money raised this weekend funds a scholarship program that helps make life better for those who have given up so much. Carolinas PGA Staff When Patriot Golf Day was first created, the intention was to have facilities add $1 to their greens fees during Labor Day weekend. Many PGA Professionals have taken it upon themselves to come up with new and creative ways to raise money for the Folds of Honor Foundation and honor those who have served our country. The Carolinas PGA Section staff enjoyed hearing about all of the various events that our members held to benefit the Folds of Honor Foundation. We would love to be able to include all the facilities that sent us information, but due to the large number of responses, we had to select a few to highlight. The complete guidelines are available on www.pgalinks.com but I wanted to give you a brief overview of the guidelines. As a minimum, it is being recommended that candidates have served as a Section Officer for at least one-full term, although the PGA Constitution allows any member in good standing to hold national office. Candidates must complete and application and obtain approval of the application prior to starting their campaign. All candidates will also be required to undergo a criminal background check. Formal campaigning cannot begin until the “campaign start date” of the election year, defined as being the end of the regularly scheduled Annual Meeting which precedes the election meeting. The Association will continue to fund travel and accommodations to various meetings, as well as, the PGA Annual Meeting during which the election is held. The Association will also provide Public Relations support through PGA owned media. Personal websites, social media pages and other printed materials will be the responsibility of the candidate. If more than four candidates are nominated prior to February 1 of the election year, a primary vote will be conducted. During the primary vote a Section will be required to vote in support of the candidate that the Section has nominated. Candidates finishing in the top four and ties of the primary vote will be eligible for funding and amenities and obtain two seconds from other Sections. Sections will only be permitted to second one candidate and will once again be required to submit their first-round vote in support of the candidate the Section has seconded. To me, the most significant change to the election process is the establishment of “Super Regional Meetings.” During the spring of the election year, the four Super Regional Meetings will become the venue for our Section and District delegates/officers to interview the candidates for Secretary. In order to be a viable candidate for Secretary, and participate in the Super Regional Meetings, a Section must provide a written nomination to the Secretary of the PGA of America. In the past, the Carolinas PGA officers would join the officers from the Mid-Atlantic and Kentucky Sections during our annual District 10 Meetings to interview each candidate. The District 10 delegation will now join the delegates from District 3 (Dixie, Gulf States, Tennessee Sections) and District 13 (North Florida, South Florida, Georgia Sections) to comprise the Southern Regional. My greatest concern of the new format is the possibility of the delegates not having the opportunity to get to know the candidates on a more personal level. Speaking of elections, during the CPGA 2014 Annual Meeting in Greensboro, our members will participate in the election of your CPGA Officers and Tournament Chairman. I encourage anyone with a desire to serve our Section, to make your announcement soon. Have a great fall! Mike Mike Casto, PGA The Official Golf Car of The PGA of America 2 Dear Carolinas PGA Professionals Letter from the Executive Director It is nice to know that you are taking time to read this issue of On The Fringe, and that you are reading past the President’s Letter. Hopefully, you are reading this soon after it has been received. If you are, there is still time for you to pass along your thoughts for our next Board Meeting and Annual Business Planning Session, to be held on October 14th & 15th. These two days are very important to the Section as the Board of Directors charts the course for the coming year (2014). Should you have anything you feel would be important for the Board to consider for 2014, please let me know, or pass it along to your Area Director. This is your association, and we want to know what is on your mind. Not only is it nice to know that you are taking time to read this issue, but I also hope you took time to become involved in the Awards & Honors process. The process started when you submitted your nominations last month to recognize PGA professionals for all the great work they do on a daily basis. Hopefully when the dust settles, you may also find your name on someone’s nomination list. Should that happen, it is important that you take time to help complete the process. If you have been nominated, you owe it to yourself, and the PGA professional that nominated you, to complete the nomination form. And don’t think you do not do enough to qualify, or there are many PGA professionals more worthy than you. I hear this all the time, and you might be surprised just what you have done to be nominated. You do more each day than you probably realize! Unfortunately, too many think like that and for that reason, many of our best simply sit on the sidelines. Now more than ever, you need to put your name out front. And should you not be selected in the end, it is still good to go through the process. After all, someone has recognized that you are doing things right. As many of you know, 2013 marked the first year of the Drive, Chip, and Putt competition. I have already voiced my displeasure that the Carolinas Section, along with 30 other Sections, were left out. I can promise you, those in charge heard from not only our Board, Officers and myself, but also from this same kind of group in the other 30 Sections that were left out. I am pleased to say that after this first season qualifying, the Carolinas Section, along with all the other PGA Sections, have been assured they will host qualifying in 2014. They hope to take the participation numbers to 50,000 total qualifiers in 2014. We have no details at this time as to where our qualifying will be, or if there will be more than one site. We will let you know as more information becomes available. In closing I would like to inform you of an exciting opportunity that is coming to the Carolinas Section (specifically the area from Charlotte to just east of Raleigh), the last week of October. Rich Richeson, Player Development National Manager for the PGA of America, is coming to the Carolinas. Rich will be here the entire week to meet with interested PGA professionals, to listen to what they are currently doing at their facilities as it relates to player development and growing rounds/revenues while trying to maintain and grow customers and members. As a PGA member, Rich has a wealth of knowledge in this area after working more than 35 years in the golf industry. If you would like to join in and meet with Rich, and you can make it to one of the areas from Charlotte to Raleigh, please give me a call at Carolinas Section Headquarters to see if we still have room. Each meeting takes about 90 minutes, and I can promise it will be time well spent. Sincerely, Ron Schmid, PGA Executive Director The Official Golf Car of The PGA of America 3 Patriot Golf Day 2013 are all the facilities that registered thru PGALinks to host a 2013 Patriot Golf Day event. Lake Marion Golf Course was evident once again as over $30,000 was raised for scholarships going to the families of soldiers killed or disabled defending our freedom. Lake Marion Golf Course hosted its 5th Annual Patriot Golf Day Tournament in conjunction with PGA of America. Proceeds from the tournament go to the Folds of Honor Foundation. FHF provides post-secondary educational scholarships to the spouses and children of service members disabled or killed as a result of their military service to our great nation. • • • • • Three separate shotgun tournaments over 2 days, (meals, drinks, goody bags and prizes for all) Total of 372 players between the 3 starts 91 hole sign sponsorships Raffle with over $3,000 of product given away Our donation for 2013 will be over $16,000 Country Club of Sapphire Valley The Country Club of Sapphire Valley Membership continued its outstanding support of military families this past Labor Day, as the Club conducted its seventh consecutive successful Patriot Golf Day. Members were treated to an emotional opening ceremony which included multiple moving performances. Banks and Shane opened with the National Anthem. Tom played 145 holes. He had a total of 28 birdies, including three turkeys (three birdies in a row!). In addition to the three turkeys, he made four birdies in a six hole stretch twice! His low round of the day was 70. Heidi played a total of 127 holes. She had five birdies, one eagle, and her low round of the day was 74. We cannot thank you enough for the drinks, snacks, show of support, and most importantly your donations to the Folds of Honor Foundation. We have to give a big shout out to Josh Goodman, Bob Fulton, Charon Wright, and Joan Heidacher for working hard all day as forecaddies for both Tom and Heidi. As PGA Members Tom and Heidi are both very passionate about supporting Patriot Golf Day and all of the men and women serving our country. Thanks to your show of support we will be sending a check to the Folds of Honor Foundation for a minimum of $14,087.00 as donations are still rolling in. I can guarantee that all attendees will take ideas, programs and knowledge that can be put to work instantly growing Youth & Family Golf and driving dollars to the bottom line at your facility and in your pocket! For example, you will learn the science behind how we learn new skills at various ages and the art of teaching youth with a practical application. You will hear from presenters that you have never heard before that are on the cutting edge of these topics! It’s an exciting day of learning about the POWER OF YOUTH AND FAMILY GOLF! Rick Murphy, PGA Professional Chairman, 2014 PGA Youth & Family Golf Summit Carolinas PGA Honorary President Incoming PGA District 10 Director Kelly Mitchum, PGA Represents Team USA at PGA Cup Carolinas PGA Member, Kelly Mitchum, Assistant PGA Professional at Pinehurst CC No. 1-5 represented the United States in the 26th PGA Cup. Kelly is one of eight PGA Professionals selected from around the country who were selected for Team USA. Mitchum and Team USA pulled off a victory over the Great Britian & Ireland Team giving USA an all-time record of 17-5-4! The PGA Cup was held September 20-22, 2013 at De Vere Slaley Hall near Hexham, Northumberland, England. The PGA Cup is the same format as the Ryder Cup, expected instead of the top Tour players, the top PGA Professional from the United States and Great Britian & Ireland compete. Read about Kelly’s last day in England: Our Final Day - Day 7 Tee times for our singles matches weren’t quite so early as the past two days. I was the third off following Mike Small and Bob Sowards with my match starting at 9:50 AM. My opponent for the day was again Greig Hutcheon, who had beat up on JC and me the day before. It was another sunny day, but we woke up to the winds blowing at about 15 mph. I felt like this was a good thing since par should be a good score. Our match stayed close with my winning a hole then Greig coming back thru the first 11 holes. Going into 12 all square I hit the ball to the right off the tee into deep rough. I had to take an unplayable lie, hacked it up to the front fringe. Greig successfully hit the green in regulation leaving about a 35-footer. Since the pin was towards the back of the green, I had about a 90-footer. After rolling thru a little bit of fringe, my ball got onto the front level, broke to the right to a sizable tier straightened out and rolled right into the hole. I have never heard my wife react so loudly on the golf course. It flustered Greig, my putt not my wife, so that he ended up three putting and losing the hole. I went on to win the next hole and was two up, but lost fourteen to go into the par three 15 just one up. I just missed birdie on 15 so stayed one up going into sixteen. We both hit good drives on the par four sixteen and I hit my nine-iron to a back right pin position to about ten feet from the hole. After gathering my nerves, I went thru my routine and knocked it in. It was a great feeling because I knew I had secured at least half a point for our team. I floated up to the 17 tee with so much adrenaline pumping I wasn’t quite sure if I made contact with the ground. The normal 45-second hike took about 10. On the 17th tee I pulled out my driver and gave it a rip. It slightly overhooked, ending up off the fairway. Greig played conservatively with a driving iron and got it in the fairway. I ended up having to gouge it out to the 100-yard marker while Greig pulled his into the left greenside bunker. I wedged on to about 18 feet. Greig had a horrible lie and was unable to pop it out of the bunker on his first try. I went on to two putt and win the match. After congratulations from my captain and a couple of quick interviews, I was ready to root on my teammates. We stayed put and waited for JC to come to 17-green. He lost the 17th, leveling his match, so I finally got to see the 18th hole. At this point every match point was critical seeing that the GB & I team was having a dominant day. They had already won the first two matches out. JC made an incredible four on 18 to halve his match and secure a half point. We need just one more to retain the cup. We got that when Ryan Polzin secured his point on the 16th hole. We ran back to 17 to catch Matt Dobyns as his match was our last best chance to win outright. His opponent made a clutch downhill six-footer on the 18th hole to win the match leaving the 26th PGA Cup dead even. Finishing in a The Official Golf Car of The PGA of America 9 tie was a weird feeling seeing that in all competitions I had ever played in before were always played to an outright winner. Neither team won, but as was said in the closing ceremonies, the real winner was the game of golf itself. The PGA Cup concluded with a farewell dinner. Toasts were made all around, then it was time to say our goodbyes. It has been a whirlwind week, and we are sad to see it come to an end. Thanks to everyone who has been following us and cheering for Team USA. We’ll see you when we come back across the pond. One thing we did last year was to create an app for the golf course that includes scoring, photos, promotions, a GPS yardage book, virtual flyovers for each hole when you turn your phone sideways, and much more. This has been an incredible marketing tool for us and helps us greatly with the common course complaint of there being too many blind shots. The app is really a one-stop place where you can see everything we have to offer with events, merchandise deals and the golf course itself. Another touch we have become known for is offering ice-cold apples during the spring and fall on the 16th tee box. This fits in with the agricultural theme Tobacco Road has, with our tee markers all being different farming instruments, and the apples figuratively and literally leave a good taste in the golfers’ mouths when they walk off the 18th green. As a travel host, we are dedicated to offering a memorable experience that opens eyes and makes people want to come back to play our course again. Joe Gay on the business impact of offering an app and an apple to your travel guests: Only roughly one percent of golf courses in the country have apps, so this is a great touch and definitely worth the expense of $5,000 plus an annual fee of $1,500. Our operation has benefitted greatly from the more than 5,000 golfers who have downloaded the app and the 2,00-plus who receive our push notifications. Having an interactive app, and also being able to offer apples on the course, separates us from other facilities and gives us a fan base of golfers who spread the word about us. Jessica Stewart, PGA and Todd Miller, PGA featured in Golf Business Magazine Taken from Details that Boost Retail Article from the September 2013 issue of Golf Business Magazine, By Robert Carey The pro shop at Duke University Golf Club in Durham, North Carolina, also delivers an experience that highlights interests outside of golf. “We’ll do displays that focus on the other sports taking place on campus,” says Jessica Stewart, head professional and 2012 Carolinas PGA Merchandiser of the Year. Accordingly, golfers will see everything from lacrosse sticks and helmets to football and soccer jerseys to game-used basketballs and even a piece of Cameron Indoor Stadium’s wooden playing floor. Each display is bolstered with new items when that sport comes into season, while a huge stuffed Blue Devil stands in a far corner to capture the attention of children. “Tweaking these elements every so often makes the shop feel current and vibrant,” Stewart adds. “People feel like they’re welcome to browse, rather than to just look for what they need for golf. So they move along to every corner of the shop.” Besides the sports angle, Stewart creates displays for Mother’s Day and Father’s Day, with holiday-specific mementos and images sprinkled in with golf-related goods aimed at that specific audience. And each February brings a tent sale—with a tent erected inside the pro shop, where goods are rearranged for a different shopping feel. “Everything we put under that tent is on clearance, and we get a lot of people in here who aren’t even playing that day,” Stewart notes. Mr. Bishop, My name is Frank Maynard III and I’m the Senior Assistant Golf Professional at the University of North Carolina’s Finley Golf Course in Chapel Hill, N.C. It’s a university-owned, public access golf course that is open 364 days a year. As I finish teaching my third five-week Get Golf Ready program, I feel compelled to tell you about my experiences with this initiative. I attempted to implement this program at our club last year, but for various reasons was not able to get it off the ground. Over the winter, I felt an inner fire within to make this program happen, so I set up an activeworks.com account and hit the ground running. By March I had my first session set up and to my surprise I had people call, email and stop by to ask about the program. Long story short, all eight spots were full, with participants enrolling and paying online at active.com. I couldn’t believe I filled up my first session! The 50/50 split of time on the practice facility and golf course was so unique and made the 90-minute sessions fly by. Session one went so well that I decided to do a summer session, which again was full. Fast forward to this week when I completed my third session, also fully sold. (This session, seven of the eight participants were women.) While three sessions of eight people (24 total) might not seem like a lot compared to some other facilities, as a PGA Professional who works at a public access Tom Fazio golf course it was all I could handle. Between working in the golf shop, pulling up golf carts in the mornings, running tournaments, supervising part-time staff, administering our handicap system, teaching “regular” lessons, running junior golf camps and attempting to keep my game in decent enough shape to be worthy of our PGA logo (and, most importantly, giving my full attention to being the best dad that I can be to my 6-year-old daughter), my days are quite full. However, the Get Golf Ready sessions were a great fit and easy to operate in a minimal amount of time. During and after each session, I heard similar things: “This program is exactly what I’m looking for.” “Wow, what a perfect way to get into (or back into) the game.” And my personal favorite: “This was fun!” A goal of mine was to make sure that the people who took the Get Golf Ready class returned to our course even after it was over. I gave everyone in my sessions a Get Golf Ready ID card that is good until the end of 2013 and provides discounts on practice balls, golf shop merchandise, food and non-alcoholic beverages in our grill, and twilight greens fees. Everyone who took the class has used at least one of these aspects of the card, and some have taken advantage of it numerous times. From my perspective, the best part is that 23 out of the 24 people in my sessions did not utilize our facility regularly before they had their Get Golf Ready classes. Can you say, “Growing the game”? From a financial aspect, I have been able to gross close to $2,500 from these sessions. Our facility has reaped additional rewards, with these folks becoming more regular visitors and using all facets of the operation. Overall, the experience has been outstanding. In 2014, I’m looking forward to getting our other PGA professionals involved as we add Get Golf Ready programs specifically for women and juniors and also add Get Golf Ready 2 follow-up sessions. Thought you might enjoy this feedback. I believe the Get Golf Ready program is a valuable tool for growing the game of golf and our course has benefited from being a part of it. Many thanks, Frank Maynard III, PGA Senior Assistant Golf Professional UNC Finley Golf Course 500 Finley Golf Course Road Chapel Hill, NC 27517 Golf Shop 919.962.2349 Fax 919.843.5974 [email protected] www.uncfinley.com The Official Golf Car of The PGA of America 12 Offering a One-Stop Shop Background Screening Solution to PGA Professionals www.validex.com Introduction to Background Screening Solutions Validex Employment Screening Services, the approved background screening partner of The PGA of America, has been providing custom solutions for our clients’ background screening needs since 1986. Not only should this partnership raise a substantial amount of money for our Growth of the Game initiatives, it will also generate rounds and revenues for your courses. The Links Card was founded 22 years ago in the Northeast, where they dominate that market with 140 courses and thousands of members. The corporate offices were moved to SC six years ago, and they are now duplicating the success they have had in the Northeast here in the Southeast with the Southeast Links Card, which will include the premier courses throughout NC, SC, & GA. As part of our partnership, they have agreed to donate a percentage of each card sold back to the section and with an estimated membership base of 30k-50k, that is not only substantial money for the section, but also a great increase in revenues for your courses. It’s hard to imagine a course in the section that is not looking for additional revenues. We are excited about this partnership. The success of this partnership will depend on course participation, which is why we are asking all of you to enroll your courses into the Links Card Platform today. To enroll your course, simply click on the link below, fill out the form, and that’s it. As a Links Card course, besides an increase in rounds and revenues, you will also have complete marketing access to the entire Links Card database, at no cost to you. PGA Creative Resource Center Have you ever been stuck when trying to come up with new ways to promote the PGA of America’s many new programs and initiatives? On August 1st, the PGA of America launched the Creative Resource Center to help PGA members better promote their facilities and the programs that they offer to help grow the game. Be sure to take a few minutes to look at all the different options the Creative Resource Center has to offer. Some of the options include print materials, email templates, web banners, videos, and radio ads. The Creative Resource Center is available at no cost to all PGA Professionals. One of the most popular items is the Email Newsletter! This is a great way to keep in touch with members and customers. The template provides the space for you to add four custom stories. If you do not have four stories that week, the PGA of America can provide two stories for you from PGA.com! This is the fifth time he’s won this tournament and second in a row. Mitchum opened the event with a solid round of 73 (+1) on a windy and difficult day. His second round will be spoken of at Kiawah Island Club for quite a while as he set a new competitive round scoring record for Cassique with a 63 (-9), and it could have been lower. Mitchum did not quite continue his hot streak on the third and final day. An outward nine of 40 saw his eight-stroke lead shrink to three strokes; however, he regained form and finished in 32 for a round of 72 (E) for a three-round total of 208 (-8). Mitchum is annually one of the CPGA’s top competitors having previously captured the Section’s Bob Boyd Player of the Year award five times. With this win, he earned that honor a sixth time. His major tournament victories include the CPGA Professional Championship five times (as previously mentioned), the Carolinas Open two times, the South Carolina Open three times, and the CPGA Assistant Professional Championship two times. Based on recent performances at PGA of America tournaments, Mitchum will represent the United States at the 26th PGA Cup - a team match play competition pitting PGA Professionals from the U.S. against their counterparts from Great Britain and Ireland. That event will take place later this month on September 20-22 in Northumberland, England. Visit www.pga.com/news/pga/2013-pga-cup for information. Mike Townsend, the PGA Head Professional at Eagle Point Golf Club in Wilmington, NC, finished alone in second place six strokes behind Mitchum with rounds of 75-70-69=214 (-2). Greg Boyette, the PGA Head Professional at Bulls Bay Golf Club in Awendaw, SC was one stroke behind Townsend in third place at 215 (-1). Mitchum, Townsend, and Boyette were the only three competitors to finish the championship under par. The Official Golf Car of The PGA of America 15 Tournament Swing October 2013 Winning this event not only provides Mitchum with a share of the largest purse that the CPGA offers during the year.
