News from Ride On Therapeutic Horsemanship
Number 30 • Spring 2008
Home Sweet Home
For five years getting a permanent foothold in the
San Fernando Valley has been Ride On's number one
strategic priority and on May 8th we achieved just
that. Ride On is proud to announce that we closed
escrow on a new, permanent ranch site in Chatsworth
that we can finally call home. This achievement is
not only important for Ride On but for the entire
community - a permanent therapeutic riding center is
here to stay and will serve generations to come. The 3
acre site is located in Chatsworth on Topanga Canyon
Boulevard with beautiful views of the Santa Susana
Mountains and Stoney Point. We will build the
property from the ground up allowing us to design a
well thought out and functional facility which will
take into consideration the needs of the disabled, our
horses our volunteers and our families.
Spearheaded by the McQueeney Family Challenge,
so many people have worked so very hard to raise
funds to inch us toward this goal and we would like to
thank each and everyone.
The challenge is to now maximize the possibilities
and we will need continued, strong financial support
to develop the site to it’s maximum potential. Ride On
is committed to providing generations of service to the
San Fernando Valley and welcomes individuals with
disabilities to our new home...sweet home.
Community Comes Together
for the Ride On Open House
Our Annual Open House at the Thousand Oaks facility was a wonderful success this year with close to 400
people attending throughout the day. We had plenty to entertain kids and their parents including stick horse
crafts, vendor booths, horseshoe hunts, animal petting and a great lunch provided by the Newbury Park Rotary
Club. Our students entertained visitors with some great therapeutic riding and hippotherapy demonstrations
and staff and board members were on hand to answer questions.
Thanks to the following sponsors for partnering with us to make this event so successful-Affinity Bank,
Oaksparent.com, Newbury Park Rotary Club, B-Mod fitness and a special thank you to the Conejo Recreation
and Park District. Thanks also to our vendors Usborne Books, Arbonne, Graffiti Tzs, J Bella soy candles, Glass I
and Shave It-all gave a percentage of their sales for the day back to Ride On.
The Open House is our day to invite the community to come and see what we are all about and we were
delighted with the support – see you all next year!
Celebrate
Western Style
at the Ronald Reagan
Presidential Library
Mark your calendars and join us on September
27th 2008, from 6pm onwards for our annual
fundraising event in the Air Force One Pavilion at the
Ronald Reagan Presidential Library. Please join in
honoring and thanking Mr. David Murdock for his
support of Ride On for the past seven years and enjoy
an evening of Western Movie nostalgia, great live
music and a catered dinner.
The Air Force One Pavilion sits on top of the hills
in Simi Valley with beautiful views of the valleys and
ocean. It is the perfect setting for a late summer
event and we are looking forward to welcoming you
to this wonderful new venue for Ride On.
We are excited to announce that our MC for the
evening will be Carl Bell, KNBC 4’s weatherman and
we have some fantastic live music lined up for your
entertainment. Guests will dine beneath the Air Force
One Presidential Plane and will also have the
opportunity to visit the Library during the event.
Tickets will be available a little closer to the date
and are $200 per person. All proceeds from the event
will go directly towards helping us put more children
and adults with disabilities on horseback and
building our new home. Corporate and table
sponsorships are also available – please call Sara
Jones at 805.375.9078 for more information.
Ride On
A Therapeutic Riding Program for all those with disabilities and their families.
Welcome on Board
Chris Logan, Ride On student Konni Logan and
Mayor Villaraigosa
Chatsworth
Day of the Horse
Ride On was delighted when Major Villaraigosa
dropped in to the Chatsworth Day of the Horse
recently during his tour of the North West Valley. He
spent time meeting with many of our riders and
chatting with families and volunteers and even
hopped on one of the horses at the event. The Mayor
was incredibly impressed with our program and we
were honored that he spent time learning about the
services Ride On offers to individuals with disabilities.
The Day of the Horse, which is organized by the
Chatsworth Neighborhood Council Equestrian
Committee actively works to preserve Chatsworth’s
equestrian culture. The event highlighted a variety of
disciplines including jumping, dressage and natural
horsemanship and wonderful therapeutic riding
demonstrations by our talented riders. Ride On was
happy to host the event and is looking forward to
welcoming everyone to their new facility next year.
Congratulations to our Occupational
Therapist, Trudy Epstein for recently
passing the Hippotherapy Clinical
Specialist examination. The exam
covers the use of the horse as a
therapeutic tool, horsemanship,
movement science, application of
hippotherapy principles and program
administration and is pretty tough
to pass – well done Trudy!
As Ride On continues to grow and increases the
opportunities that we offer to our community we are
also building and strengthening our Board or
Directors. We are delighted to welcome Mark Terry,
Jan Drake, Mark Frankcom, Bill Keane and Megan
Cottier to our Board.
Mark Terry recently retired from his position as
President of the Harman Pro Group after 16 years
with the company. The Harman Pro Group is the
world’s largest manufacture of professional audio
equipment. At the Harman Pro Group, Mark was
responsible for over 2,500 employees and grew this
multinational organization to over half a billion
dollars in sales. Mark brings a wealth of expertise to
the Board and has already lead a series of strategic
planning meetings charting Ride On’s course for
the future.
Jan Drake has been a dedicated program volunteer
at the Thousand Oaks location for a number of years
and has now joined our Board. Jan is a Personal
Trainer and works one on one with some of our riders.
She grabs every opportunity to talk about Ride On
and is a wonderful asset to our Board.
Mark Frankcom is a former senior executive at
Amgen. He has a wide leadership experience and has
led many organizational change programs. Mark is
currently writing a book and has his own consultancy
business.
Bill Keane is Vice President of Wealth Management
& Trust Services at First Private Bank & Trust. He was
formerly with Union Bank of CA in the role of Senior
Wealth Advisor. He worked for over 11 years in
Century City serving high net worth clients and
non-profit organizations at UBS/Painewebber and
prior to that at Prudential Securities.
Megan Cottier is a Field Deputy for Councilman
Greg Smith with the City of Los Angeles Council
District 12. She has been coordinating events as well
as assisting with community outreach for the
Councilman since 2007. Prior to working with the
City, Megan worked in Member Services for the North
Valley Regional Chamber of Commerce.

Needed
Did You Know?
Everyone looks forward to a long and happy retirement and our hard working horses deserve just that.
Ride On is looking for retirement pastures/homes for
our senior equine therapists that can no longer be
ridden by our students. We would love to keep every
single one of our wonderful horses that have been so
loyal, patient and kind but it is very difficult as we
have limited stall space at each facility. If you are
able to provide a retirement home please contact our
Program Director, Gloria Hamblin.
ETI Corral 54
Supports Ride On
Thank you to ETI Corral 54 and Mary Kaufman
for making Ride On the beneficiary of their Spring
Schooling Show which was held in Simi Valley.
Despite the gale force winds the show was a great
success with plenty of riders in each class. Some of
Ride On’s independent riders had the opportunity to
show which was a great experience for them and we
received a generous donation of $675 from class
fees and class sponsorships.
• Ride On gave a total of 6,035 lessons and
treatments to 180 riders every week in 2007
• Ride On is one of the 15 largest therapeutic
riding centers in the United States
• Over 130 volunteers each week donate over
16,000 hours of work in a year
• The top four staff positions at Ride On have a
combined 120 years of horse experience
• 75% of our riders are children age 18 & under
• We have given over 42,000 lessons in our
14 year history
• We are a Premier Accredited North American
Riding for the Handicapped Association Center
(NARHA)
• We are the only accredited provider of equine
assisted therapy services in Los Angeles and
Ventura Counties
• Ride On has 7 therapists, 7 instructors and 30
wonderful horses that work together to make a
difference in the lives of kids and adults with
disabilities…..one ride at a time!

Fun and Fundraising
The Annual
Barn Dance
Our 3rd Annual Barn Dance will be held on
Saturday June 28th from 6pm onwards at the
Chatsworth Ranch. Join us for a fun evening of
dancing, road apple bingo, great food and wonderful
company with live music by the Doo-Wah Riders and
Line Dancing with the Borderline. The original
concept for the Barn Dance came from a group of
incredibly dedicated Ride On staff and volunteers that
were determined to secure a permanent home for
Ride On in the San Fernando Valley. Please join us
as we celebrate achieving that goal and enjoy the
wonderful community spirit that helped make that
happen. Tickets are $30 each or $50 per couple-all
proceeds from the event will go directly to the new
facility in Chatsworth. Please call Pat at 818-700-2971
for more information or to purchase tickets.
Books in the

the Summer
We are very pleased to announce that the next

26th from 10am-1pm at the Thousand Oaks location.
This free event is aimed at kids ages 2-8 and features

also be selling books with a percentage of all sales
being donated back to Ride On. This is a very popular
family event and space is limited so we ask that you
RSVP to [email protected] or call 805.375.9078.
Thanks to the Kiwanis Club of Conejo Valley for
once again sponsoring this great community event –
we look forward to seeing you there!
RideOn.org
Gets a New Look
Take a moment to check out Ride On’s new website
which went live earlier this year. The new site is a
great place to check for upcoming news and events,
great information about our horses and program and
a photo gallery of recent Ride On happenings. We
should shortly have a website store front where you
will be able to purchase tickets on-line to all our
events and pay for lessons so check it out! Our website
address is still www.rideon.org.
Ride On Expands Services to Offer
Educational Workshops to the
Therapeutic Riding Industry
Congratulations to Gloria Hamblin and Sara Jones for recently achieving NARHA Evaluator status. This
qualification allows Gloria and Sara to teach NARHA On Site Registered workshops and to certify new
instructors. This will also enable Ride On to expand it’s services and offer more educational workshops and
clinics for the therapeutic riding industry. This year Ride On will give administration, hippotherapy and
instructor workshops and will also host the NARHA Region 11 conference and we plan to expand these
services in the future. Please visit our website for more information on workshops and clinics.

is Physical, Occupational or Speech Therapy using
the movement of the horse as a catalyst to improve
functions such as balance, postural control,
sensory integration, communication, mobility,
strength and behavior. It is most effective for
children (over the age of 2) or adults with mild to
severe movement or sensory challenges.
Examples include diagnoses of autism, brain
injury, cerebral palsy, developmental delay,
mobility impairments, sensory processing
disorders or stroke. It is not learning how to
ride-the therapy sessions focus on reducing
impairments and improving function. If you
have a disability and want to learn how to ride a
horse, our therapeutic riding program emphasizes
riding skills and recreation.

of Ribbons from CALNET Horseshow
Months of hard work and practice paid off for our
team of riders and horses which did an outstanding
job at this years CALNET Horseshow for riders with
disabilities. 31 Ride On students and 12 horses spent
the weekend competing in classes including
equitation, pole bending, obstacle and dressage at
various skill levels from walk only to intermediate
canter. Many of our riders placed in the top three in
their class and Rob Murphy and Michele Mika both
won high point for the advanced canter and
intermediate canter divisions.
A huge thank you to all of our wonderful
volunteers and instructors that spent the weekend
grooming, tacking, side walking, coaching and
supporting our riders. It is truly a team effort and we
are proud of each and every one of our riders.
