Former FB Soldier tells of life at 1858 Fort Stanton
By Wendy Brown
Fort Bliss Bugle Editor
Sgt. Mike Bilbo, Company K, 1st Regiment, 8th U.S. Infantry, Fort Stanton, New
Mexico Territory, took time out of his
marching schedule to meet with folks at the
El Paso Museum of Archaeology Saturday
and tell them about life at the fort in 1858.
“Any of you guys who were stationed at
places like Korea or Afghanistan, far away
from home, you know exactly what a place
like this is like,” Bilbo told an audience of
about 50. “Civilization is either San Francisco or it’s east of the Mississippi, and that’s it.
You’re out there by yourself.”
Bilbo, who uses his real name while portraying a Soldier stationed at Fort Stanton in
1858, in real life arrived at Fort Bliss as an
Army brat in 1957. He joined the Army in
1973 and spent 10 years as an active-duty infantry Soldier, and then another 20 years in
the Reserves. He retired in 2004 at the rank
of sergeant first class.
These days, he is a volunteer docent at
the Fort Stanton Historical Site, located 153
miles north of Fort Bliss in Lincoln, New
Mexico, and works as an outdoor recreation
planner for the Fort Stanton Snowy River
Cave National Conservation Area, a unit of
the Roswell Field Office of the Bureau of
Land Management.
He and his wife Barbara live in a house
located on the site, and he is active in living
history with the Fort Stanton Garrison organization. He has completed the 26.2-mile
Bataan Memorial Death March at White
Sands Missile Range seven times, including
in the 1858 woolen Army uniform he wore
to the museum presentation.
Fort Stanton, established in 1855 and a
military fortification through 1896, is named
for Capt. Henry W. Stanton, an officer killed
during a pursuit of Mescalero Apaches. Today the state of New Mexico (which became
a state in 1912) runs the site.

poses for a photo outside the El Paso Museum of Archaeology Saturday. Bilbo, who uses his real
name and became involved in living history the year after he joined the Army in 1973, 10 years as an
active-duty infantry Soldier, and another 20 years in the Reserves. The Franklin Mountains Wilderness Coalition sponsored his visit.
what many of the old Army forts in the area
looked like in the mid-1800s, Bilbo said, but
Fort Stanton was different because instead
of being made out of adobe, it was made of
stone.
“Most of the forts like Bliss were adobe,
but the soil there at Stanton was no good
for adobe,” Bilbo said. “It was really good
in Lincoln or Placitas, but not right there at
Fort Stanton.”
Soldiers spent a lot of time marching in
the area of the fort to protect people from
Apache attacks, and it snowed a lot in the

winter, Bilbo said.
“The life of a Soldier at this fort when
it snowed is quite something,” Bilbo said,
showing several pictures of the fort under a
blanket of snow. “You get the feel for this really abject cold, and you’re always on guard
duty.”
Perhaps partially due to that cold, Soldiers
of the time period slept in four-men bunks
– two on the top bunk and two on the bottom. “Kids were raised in the 19th century
in one bed, so there’s no big deal about that,”
he said.

Soldiers also had the services of laundresses, each of whom served 19 Soldiers
and earned $19 a month, Bilbo said.
Majors also made $19 a month, Bilbo
said, but everyone understood the laundresses earned their pay because of the back
breaking work they did.
Privates were not supposed to get married,
although higher ranking enlisted Soldiers
could, but if they did marry a laundress, for
example, the Army had a policy of putting
married couples under a solid roof, and a
bachelor officer could find himself bumped
out to a tent on the parade ground as a result,
Bilbo said.
Bilbo showed the audience several artifacts from the time period, including a coffee pot, which did not look much different
from today’s metal coffee pots that go on a
campfire or stove.
In 1858, Soldiers took turns doing the
cooking, but not always, Bilbo said.
“If you didn’t want to get poisoned, you
found people who knew how to cook and
made them the permanent cook,” Bilbo said.
Bilbo said he has been involved in living
history since 1974, shortly after he joined the
Army, and he enjoys it because instead of reenacting battles, for example, participants do
their best to experience what the historical
figures experienced.
“There’s a difference between living history and immersion type events, reenacting.
It’s really fun to go to big battles where you
have the Rebels and the Yankees and there
are hundreds and sometimes even thousands,
but those are really set in piece, as opposed
to getting out in the field and doing some
long-range hiking,” Bilbo said.

El Paso Youth Project brings a new perspective to youth sports
By Jessica Batts
Fort Bliss Bugle Staff
El Paso Youth Project is an innovative way
of bringing awareness about health, wellness
and sports to children who are not yet eligible to play sports in school. This program
is composed of two parts.
According to the founder of the project,
Franks Munene, the biggest thing is “to get
the kids involved in health and wellness and
get them into better physical shape.” The
second part of this project is to develop the
children who are interested in playing competitive, organized sports.
Coach Munene came to the U.S. on an athletic scholarship to the University of Texas
at El Paso for long distance running. He is a
seasoned athlete and coach who owns several sports programs in the city, KFM International Sports, Sun City Elites and El Paso
Youth Sports Academy.
Munene’s motivation in starting this project was not only the lack of sports for this
age range, but the fact that childhood obesity
is on the rise and has more than quadrupled
in the past 30 years. This is especially true
here in El Paso, as it is ranked as one of the
heaviest cities in the country.
El Paso Youth Project stands out from
other youth sports programs because it focuses on the specific age range of 7-yearsold to sixth grade, the ages where there are
not sports allotted to the children in school.
Coach Munene said because the children
do not have any preparatory programs some
children may have no development in the

area of sports, so a lot of children who may
have raw talent are not prepared and may shy
away from sports.
Another special feature of the program is
it will be sanctioned under the Amateur Athletic Union, making it the first of its kind.
The children who participate will be covered
under AAU’s sports insurance, which only
costs $14 annually. These children will also
have the choice of competing in AAU sports

El Paso Youth Project will be a year-round
after-school program that is held at the various parks and recreation centers across El
Paso. Munene said the main focus will be
overall conditioning to help get the children
into good physical shape and to develop
their skills as young athletes. The secondary part would be a curriculum where the
children learn about goal setting, leadership,
discipline, respect, and how to apply these
characteristics both on and off the field.
The program will be a low cost, affordable
program. The only initial fee would be the
cost of AAU insurance. Munene is getting
sponsors as well as applying for grants to
fund this project.
“I do not want to have to shut kids out just
because they cannot afford the program ... I
am looking for numbers in this program and
to help the youth of El Paso, that is why I am
doing this,” said Munene.

2-43rd ADA wins Al Udeid Air Base Basketball Championship
By Sgt. 1st Class Jason Rayburn
2nd Bn., 43rd ADA Regiment
AL UDEID AIR BASE, Qatar—The team
of Soldiers with 2nd Battalion, 43rd Air Defense Artillery Regiment, “Warriors,” 11th
Air Defense Brigade, won the Al Udeid Air
Base Basketball Championship by defeating
the Air Force’s 379th Wing Expeditionary
Civil Engineer Group 81-61 July 1.
The Warrior team competed in a threemonth-long basketball league with a perfect
record of 10-0 throughout the regular season, defeating all the teams by an average
of 18 points a game. Through friendly, but
fierce competition, each night the stands
were filled with scores of Airmen, wishing
that the undefeated Army team would finally
falter. That did not happen.
Instead of losing focus, the Army team
was motivated to play aggressive and tough
defense as they controlled the tempo up and
down the court. They pulled off the win and
ultimately silenced the opposition in the
stands. The Army’s defense was a showstopper, leading them to a championship.

The 2nd Battalion, 43rd ADA Regiment, 11th Air Defense Brigade, basketball team pose with their
trophies after winning the Al Udeid Air Base, Qatar, Basketball League Championship July 1.
The team progressed throughout the season as the players learned how to anticipate
and trust each other. Each player knew and
accepted their role whether it was in defense,
scoring or just pushing the tempo through-
out the game. Despite not having two of their
key players, Spc. Keith Wood, wheeled vehicle mechanic from Battery C, and defensive player of the year candidate, and Spc.
Elisha Graves, petroleum supply specialist
also from Battery C, in the first two rounds
of the playoffs, the Strength in Honor team
managed close victories.
“We knew that we were a good team,
but also knew that there was a lot of talent
on the other side of the ball, the difference
is that we played as a team,” said 1st Sgt.
Tommy Flores, Battery C first sergeant and
team coach. “Teams win championships, not
individuals.”
Spc. Marcus Forbes, automated logistical
specialist from Company E, was selected as
the League and Playoffs MVP by scoring an
average of 13.8 points a game and scoring
31 points in the championship game. Spc.
Tony Williams, automated logistical specialist, Co. E, was the team constant at point
guard averaging 13.3 points a game and five
assists. Spc. Kristopher Rodgers, automated
logistical specialist, Co. E, was recognized
as the “League’s Sixth Man” for providing
the needed rest for the starting five while averaging 5.7 points per game.
Throughout the entire season, Flores said
the Army Team performed like champions.
