Antique Autos gather in History Park
When the Antique Autos go
on display in San Jose’s History
Park (Kelley Park 635 Phelan
Avenue) on Sunday, September
14, it’ll also mark the 14th year
that this event has graced History
Park’s grounds with this unique
event which will feature 200
antique autos, plus fire equipment,
bicycles and motorcycles of all
makes from the late 1800s to
1945.
The event is presented by the
Santa Clara Valley Model T Ford
Club and History San Jose.
Participating on the grounds
that Sunday will also be the
Early Day Gas Engine and
Tractor Association and steam
powered autos including brands
Locomobile, White Stanley,
Prescott, and possibly, organizers
say, a Doble.
Handcraft exhibitors will
display car--toon art, chair caning,
lace making, needle point, rug
hooking, and water colors.
Displays
of
antique
collectibles are also expected
including antique bottles and
license plates, steam engineers
and vintage car clocks. Vintage
hats and clothing and a pioneers
display are also on the calendar
for the day.
Portraits of the Past members
will also circulate wearing themed
costumes of days gone by.
In keeping with the theme, a
Dixieland Jazz Band (Toot Sweet
Jazz Band) will provide music
from noon to 1:30 and Peggy
Sue’s Restaurant and O’Brien’s
Café will make sure there is food
on hand. Admission to the event
is $5 but free to History San
Jose members and participants.
Fun starts at 11am and continues
until 4pm. For more information,

Students will STEAM along!
Classes started this week
in Campbell Union School
District and are focusing on
STEAM education—Science,
Technology, Engineering, the
Arts, & Mathematics whose goal
is to bring real-world applications
to classroom learning and prepare
students for college and career
success. Teachers are encouraged
to provide STEAM lessons that
will have students “think like
an engineer” or a scientist or an
artist. They’ll be encouraging
students to use critical thinking,
communication, and technology
to solve problems.
To support these goals
the district has formed a new
partnership with Lockheed Martin
engineers where role models and
industry professionals will coteach, bringing meaningful and
engaging lessons. Partnerships
will also be continued with
Montalvo Arts Center’s Teaching
Artists program.
Last year, a STEAM lesson in Campbell Middle School had
students build a solar-powered car together. Like adults,
they had to understand the technical instructions, delegate
tasks, communicate and creatively solve any problems that
arose during the engineering process.

Fire Calls
An apartment on Almarida was entered when a thief removed a
window screen and took property.
At Bascom and Hamilton, in the evening, a man walked out of
some bushes naked and masturbating. He attempted to flee but was
caught and booked into jail.
Shortly after midnight in the 500 block of E. Hamilton Avenue, a
couple were stopped and booked into jail after trying to leave the area
when they were in possession of prescription pills, a methamphetamine
pipe, a driver’s license belonging to the victim of an auto burglary and
had three laptops in their car.
When this 54 year old woman attempted to conceal property in her
purse and exited a store on E. Hamilton Avenue, she was taken into
custody by Loss Prevention. She not only had prior theft convictions
but was also in possession of methamphetamine and cocaine for sale
but also had marijuana and two methamphetamine pipes.
A man was arrested on Winchester Blvd in the 2300 block as he
was found to be under the influence and in possession of heroin. He
also had two outstanding bail warrants.
When a woman attempted to purchase items with a forged credit
card in the 600 block of E. Hamilton, she was also was found to have
numerous other forged credit cards in her possession.
A woman was booked into jail after she was found sleeping in a
vehicle in a no parking area at Campbell Avenue and Hunt Way. She
was determined to be too intoxicated to care for herself.
When a man took a bicycle for a “test drive”, he left his driver’s
license and credit card behind as security. When he failed to return, it
was determined the identification cards he left were fraudulent.
Two men causing a disturbance and pan handling on W. Hamilton
Avenue were also found to be drunk in public and booked into jail.
On Creekside Way, a loaded revolver in his backpack sent this 39
year old man to jail. He was also under the influence of a controlled
substance.

have long been aware that these
folks have a great deal of value
to a community in that they

and what does that do?
Well for one thing, it brings in

the cost of services to the average
homeowner.

in the trash but this one caught my
eye—it’s information on the 2014
California State Duck Calling
championship on Saturday and
Sunday in Colusa, California with
all kinds of activities connected
with it—even some workshops
for kids to participate and they
have a dinner at the end of the
day—wonder if they serve roast
duck (caught by calling?).

Dropped by Pino’s Trattoria for
lunch and found staff hauling a
lot of food to the garbage bin as
they felt one of the refrigerators
had failed and weren’t about to
take chances with the contents….
Pino estimated $2000 worth of
not-to-be-savored food was going
out!
------- One of my goals is to visit the
Charles M. Schulz Museum in
Santa Rosa. They have a variety
of programs and visitors and
displays. The current exhibit is of
Schulz’ early cartoons of Peanuts
which runs September 11 to
January 4. Maybe I’ll get to go as
a Christmas present! (hint hint).
------- While some schools struggle
to plan reunions, attendees and
graduates from Campbell High
School (closed for more than 25
years) have got it all handled by
holding luncheons quarterly at
the San Jose Elks Lodge at 444
W. Alma in San Jose. Next date
is Friday, September 5 from 11am
to 2pm. Cost is $19 payable to
Campbell Alumni Luncheon

center—well, that’s because

closed, the city stepped up and

It is the dream vacation
destination for many and in
aviation terms it has a fascinating
history.
Hawaii’s first air event was
on 2 March 1889, when Emil L.
Melville hung from a trapeze in
a balloon. Hawaiian Airlines is
the largest locally operated airline
starting service on 6 October
1929 as Inter-Island Airways.
The main airport Honolulu
International (HNL) opened in
March 1927 as John Rodgers
Airport, named after World War I
naval officer John Rodgers. Prior
to this aircraft had been limited
to small landing strips, fields or
seaplane docks.
The U.S. military grounded
all civil aircraft and took over
all civil airports after the attack
on Pearl Harbor, and Rodgers
Field was designated Naval Air
Station Honolulu. The Navy
built a control tower and terminal
building, and some commercial
traffic was allowed during
Hawaiian Flying
daylight hours. Rodgers Field
was returned to the Territory of
Hawaii in 1946.
The Airport was renamed
Honolulu Airport in 1947 and
“International” was added to the
name in 1951. Located near the
center of the Pacific Ocean it was a
stop for many transpacific flights.
By 1950 it was the third-busiest
airport in the United States in
terms of aircraft operations, and
its 13,097-foot (3,992 m) runway
was the longest in the world in
1953. In summer 1959 Qantas began
the first jet service to Honolulu on
its flights between Australia and
California.
Pan Am used Honolulu as a
transpacific hub for many years,
initially as a connecting point
between the West Coast and
Polynesia (Fiji, New Caledonia
and New Zealand) in 1946, by
the mid-1970s Pan Am offered
nonstop service from Honolulu
to Japan, Guam, Australia,
New Zealand and Fiji, as well
as to cities on the West Coast. Continental
Airlines
used
Honolulu as a stopover point
for charter service to Southeast
Asia during the Vietnam War era,
and to feed its Guam-based Air
Micronesia operation (Air Mike).
In 1968 Continental–Air
Micronesia started its Island
Hopper service linking Honolulu
with
Micronesia. American
Airlines also operated flights to
Australia and the South Pacific
through Honolulu from 1970
to 1975. Many foreign carriers
used Honolulu as a transpacific
stopover point, including Air New
Zealand, China Airlines, Japan
Airlines, Korean Air, Philippine
Airlines, Qantas and Singapore
Airlines.
The airport has four major
runways. The main runway
8R/26L also known as the Reef
Runway was the world’s first
major runway constructed entirely
offshore. Completed in 1977, it
was a designated alternate landing
site for the NASA’s space shuttle
program in association with
Hickam Air Force Base, which
shares Honolulu International
Airport’s airfield operations.
Hawaiian Air is currently
undergoing major in international
route and fleet expansion. The
airline has never had a fatal
accident in its entire history and
is the oldest US carrier with such
a distinction in both fields.
A fleet of buses provide
transportation
between
the
Interisland and Main terminals.
These buses are known as “Wiki
Wiki” buses from the Hawaiian
word for “quick”. Now we know
the meaning of Wikipedia!

Library District celebrates 100 years
To celebrate its 100 Year
Anniversary, Santa Clara County
Library District is hosting a kickoff event on Saturday, September
6, at the Saratoga Library. This
free, all-ages event will include
entertainment, crafts and light
refreshments. Attendees will have
an opportunity to help the Library
District break a Guinness World
Record for “the greatest number
of people to simultaneously
balance books on their heads
and walk five meters.” The
library is encouaraging potential
participants to “bring friends
and families, and help us make
history”.
The event, to be held Saturday,
September 6, 2014 Saratoga

Visiting the West Valley College
Veterans Resource Center
When four veteran students, a
service dog and faculty members
from the West Valley College
Veteran Resource Center came
to speak to Campbell Rotary,
recently, it triggered a reaction.
Rotary had donated to the
Resource Center in the past year
but their visitors told them what
their donation had bought and
how veterans had benefited from
the use of the donations (six
graphing calculators and seven
liveScribe Smart pens).
Included in the donation
discussion were the results these
donations made toward making
education
experiences
for
some of the veterans who were
experiencing PTSD, Traumatic
Brain injuries and physical/
mental disabilities—that in some
cases cause veterans to lose focus
of their educational goals.
This
Resource
Center
has grown from a couch to a
room that now overflows into
a hallway. Once a month the
Veterans Administration from
Palo Alto is there to help with
benefits, making health exam
appointment and information
about job training opportunities.
Recently the center hosted
a “Welcome Event” where they
offered information of what the
college has available for veterans
who wish to enroll or return to
the school. They also distribute
“school supplies”, food cards,
backpacks and whatever else
might help a new student.
Information on admissions
and records, counseling services,
student aid is available. West
Valley College is seeking to
increase their ability to meet the
needs of veterans and suggest
they might become Boots to
Books friendly campus. Rotary
member Adrienne Grey, also
member of West Valley’s trustee
board, is working with faculty
members who have applied for
a veteran grant entitled Veterans
Upward Bound Program.
Other partnerships include
Operation Care and Comfort
which has provided sports tickets
to various events, an ongoing
program. Saratoga Rotary has
stepped up and provided speakers
to talk about professional goals,
and donated textbooks for a
lending library. College classes on
the campus are raising funds for
cafeteria food cards, computers, a
refrigerator and equipment.
According to a 2010 census,
there are approximately 150,000
Veterans from Vietnam to the
present residing in the area.
Pictured is a plaza where tiles which go onto the veterans
seating may be purchased ($100 for community members).
The proceeds go toward needs for veterans.
West Valley College faculty and Campbell Rotarians recently took a tour of the Veteran’s

Dan Furtado, former Campbell mayor, donated funds which
went toward the opening of the Resource Center.
The Resource Center has facilities for veterans that include desks and aging computers. A
Veterans Club meets weekly.

Anselme Selosse

“Nature is larger and bigger
than all of us. It’s crazy to think
that man can dominate nature.”
Anselme Selosse issued
this profound statement while
explaining
his
winemaking
philosophy one recent morning
at his small property in Avize, a
village in Champagne’s Côte des
Blancs.
“Wines must show the
characteristics of the place,”
he continued. “Illuminating the
vineyard is my obsession.”
For Selosse, wine has a higher
purpose. A wine must translate
place, clearly expressing the
characteristics of the soils and
climate in which it’s grown.
This concept--the notion
of terroir--is hardly unique.
Winemakers across the world
wax poetically about how “wine
is made in the vineyard.” When
Selosse took over his father’s
winery in 1974, however, such
talking points weren’t yet clichéd.
In Champagne, especially, few
producers cared about such
things.
There were exceptions, of
course. But most of the large
producers that dominated the
region sought simply to deliver
a consistent product each year.
They purchased grapes from
thousands of growers across
Champagne and paid by the ton.
So growers sought to “dominate
nature,” maximizing yields by
utilizing fertilizers, herbicides,
insecticides, and fungicides.
The results were predictably
atrocious, but it didn’t matter.
For most producers and virtually
every consumer, Champagne
wasn’t about wine; it was about
luxury.
So Selosse’s philosophy
wasn’t just unusual, it was
downright revolutionary.
Selosse learned to care about
the quality of the fruit underneath
a wine in Burgundy, where he
was inspired by the legendary
vignerons at Domaine CocheDury, Domaine Leflaive, and
Domaine des Comtes Lafon.
Shortly after taking over
his father’s vineyard holdings,
Selosse began moving towards
organic farming, obsessing over
his land, and managing yields
with a focus on quality. He
started to push ripeness to its
physiological extreme, a difficult
feat in France’s northernmost
wine region.
In the cellar, Selosse chose
to focus on his vin clair--the
still wine that’s created before
secondary fermentation--because
“[it] shows that all the flavors
are there; bubbles are just an
accessory.”
Although
soft-spoken,
Selosse speaks with the fervor of
a firebrand preacher, the charm
of a practiced storyteller, and the
passion of a zealous philosopher.
As we chatted in his cellar,
Selosse talked at great length
about the microorganisms that
live in a vineyard’s soil -- and the
unique characteristics they bring
to his wines.
To illustrate this theme, he
pointed towards the ceiling,
where the hindquarters of several
pigs were hanging, slowly curing.
For Selosse, the difference
between Prosciutto di Parma,
Jamon Iberico, and Jambon
de Bayonne can be explained
entirely by the flora, fauna, and
fungi the pigs feed on in different
regions of the world. He quickly
extended the argument to cheese,
milk, and saké.
A moment later, Selosse
pulled out a cigarette lighter,
found a piece of paper, and lit
it on fire. Within seconds, he
was left with a small pile of ash.

Spanish American War Veterans
Plot.
This rededication is in honor
of Wheaton Camp, No.8, United
Spanish American War Veterans.
This Camp, which was chartered
on April 18, 1904 was disbanded
on March 17, 1971. On September
8, 1974, the Albert Schulenberg
Memorial was dedicated, using

the final funds of the Camp’s
treasury. Almost forty years to
the day, homage will again be
paid to these veterans. Oak Hill
Cemetery has kindly donated a
new marker to denote the Spanish
American War Veterans Plot,
and we, the SUVCW, will pay
our respects and ensure that their
memories are kept fresh for the
services these men provided to
our country.

Since all living things resolve to
little more than carbon, he said,
the identity of everything we
consume is found in the ground.
“Nowhere else in the world
can you make wines with
the flavors we have here,” he
explained, bringing it all back to
Champagne.
Scientific? Perhaps not.
But with wines that are so
extraordinarily expressive, I’m a
believer.
Selosse’s wines aren’t easy to
find. Miniscule production and a
cult-like following have brought
the prices sky-high. When
available, his least expensive
offering retails for $165 per
bottle.
His impact can’t be overstated.
Selosse has inspired a whole
generation of growers to pursue
wine’s higher purpose. And he
has inspired a whole generation
of consumers to see Champagne
as a vessel, fully capable of
expressing a vineyard.

Campbell City Council
Six candidates have filed to fill four-year terms on the Campbell
City Council. They will compete for three available seats in a citywide election on Tuesday, November 4. Winners will take their seats
in January, 2015.
Campbell has a council-manager form of government which means
that they are empowered to hire a city manager to manage the city’s
day-to-day business, with their oversight. In order to ensure that there
is continuity in policy making, the terms of office of the five council
seats staggered. Two present city council members, Jason Baker and
Michael Kotowski, will continue to serve through 2016.
The three open seats are available because the terms of two of the
current councilmembers, Jeff Cristina and Richard Waterman have
expired. A third councilman, Evan Low, has both an expired term and
is “termed out”, in that he has served the maximum two consecutive
terms on the council.
At a recent Campbell Chamber of Commerce luncheon, the six
candidates for City Council drew lots to see the order in which they
will be seated and questioned at the chamber’s Candidates Forum on
Monday, September 8 from 6-8 p.m. in the City Council Chambers at
City Hall.
The council candidates will be seated in the following order at the
Chamber of Commerce September 8 event: Elizabeth Gibbons, Paul
Resnikoff, Rich Waterman, Celeste Flores, Jeff Cristina, and Phil
Reynolds.
A second forum will be held Wednesday October 15 at 7 p.m. in the
Community Room of the Campbell Library, sponsored by the League
of Women Voters.
Each candidate for Campbell City Council was asked for a short quote about their candidacy.

I am running to re-establish a balance between growth
and quality of life. My only agenda is securing a positive
future for Campbell residents and businesses. I would be

I love Campbell and the people living here. There is a sense of
community and good will that has added much over the years to
my family and me. What better way to increase even further the
benefits of living in the Campbell area than learning each others
stories and finding what each unique person has discovered about
living life and loving it. Stories have been told, remembered, and
retold for thousands of years. It is the basis of building civilization
and it adds value to both the teller and the listener.

The key is to give your full attention to the person as he or she
tells her story. DonÕt interrupt or sway or come up with your own
thoughts. One of the best methods is to use the words, tell me
more!
Our next series of articles will highlight personal stories of
Campbell area people who are currently living life and loving it.
As part of that, we will also explore how to make each other feel
like a million.
Visualize a nursery filled with babies. No two are exactly alike,
and that is just the beginning. As each one grows and matures, he
or she develops a unique personal intelligence, makes choices,
develops attitudes and beliefs, and experiences life. This makes
each person an extremely valuable, one-of-a kind resource to learn
more about life itself. Each person has a story to tell, and as we
listen to it with full intent to learn and understand, it can become a
treasure we can draw from to enrich our life. Sharing and valuing
stories is also one of the best ways to make each other feel like a
million.
