Local businesses are owned by people who live in this community, are less likely to leave, and are more invested in the community’s future. This is what gives community heart and makes it a home. Byron Norris has volunteered for the Chamber since 2001, serving primarily as our Byron Norris liaison to officials and teams for the KSHSAA State Baseball Championships each May. Byron is exemplary when it comes to making the teams, officials and KSHSAA staff feel welcome throughout their stay in Salina. He welcomes them, shows them where to park, where to practice, when to take the game field, where they can rest, and so much more. Even during weather delay or 108 degrees he has a smile on his face and a positive attitude. He’s willing to do whatever the job takes, filling a water cooler, giving the officials a ride on the golf cart or retrieving foul balls. He is a true ambassador for Salina and year after year the teams respect his expertise and commitment to them and the event. In addition to baseball, Byron has provided service during other Visit Salina sporting events, including selling t-shirts and being a team host during March basketball. He is also an advocate of the Chamber’s programs, and has been known for articulate e-mails following events suggesting helpful ways to improve event operations and better promote Salina’s events. Byron recently retired from Research Products where he worked for 36 years. As he enjoys retirement, Byron loves spending time as a husband, father and grandfather. His wife, Sandra, also volunteers for Visit Salina, and has been known to postpone some items on Byron’s “honey do” list only to the benefit of Salina. We commend and appreciate your exemplary service Byron!! Active Shooter Training Session Scheduled According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics 2010 (more recent stats), 405 people in the U.S. were killed as a result of workplace shootings. Due to the number of incidents nationwide, the Chamber has partnered with Officer Moreland of the Salina Police Department to offer an Active Shooter course. The course will cover how to handle an incident, the history of mass shootings in the U.S., how to ensure your best chance of survival, and tips on creating an emergency plan for your business. After the presentations, Officer Moreland will be available for questions and to discuss private employee training for your business. Two sessions will be offered at the Visit Salina Annex (120 W. Ash) on Tuesday, August 9, from 7-9am and 3-5pm. The sessions are free, but limited to 80 people each, and for Chamber members only. Registration is required at http://bit.ly/SACCregister. For more info, contact Hayley Morrical at [email protected] or 785-827-9301. 3 CHAMBER NEWS KKOA Leadsled Spectacular! It’s more than a KOOL car show; it’s 5 days of FUN. For 12 consecutive years, Salina has welcomed those KRAZY KRUISERS with the Kustom Kemps of America (KKOA)! Expanding to 5 days, this year the event promises to be bigger, better, and KOOLER than ever! The main event, the Kustom Hotrod Show & Shine, makes Oakdale Park the hot-spot where the estimated 1800+ Kustom Kemps, Hotrods, Drag Machines and their drivers will descend upon their annual nationwide Leadsled Spectacular event Friday, Saturday and Sunday July 29-31. While the show will feature the great “ol’school” events, new this year KKOA has added two feature attractions that will extend the KOOLNESS to 5 DAYS! The show will begin with a Hotrod and Kustom Auction on Wednesday, July 27 This professionally run auction will showcase finished, or under construction pre-1969 traditional and post 1970 new concept custom style hotrods and customs. The auction will be held at Salina Auto Auction. The 2nd big new feature of the show is the Spectacular Ol’ School Vintage Market Place. This vendor expo will feature vintage, repurposed and retro home goods, vintage 40s, 50s boutique dress apparel, jewelry, watches and kitchen appliances, home architectural salvage décor, windows, trim, fencing and patio furniture, and anything old, used or Kool! The market place will be held at the Saline County Expo Center Thursday-Saturday July 28-30. Special thanks to North Salina Community Development, Inc. for supporting the operations of this NEW feature event! Great Partners! History A “Kustom Kemp” is hip, slang talk used by kool teenagers in the 50’s and 60’s to indicate a kustomized car or truck. And, you’ll see the ‘koolest kustomized kemps’ on wheels coming to Salina throughout this Spectacular 5-day event. After traveling to different U.S. cities for 24 years, KKOA moved the legendary Leadsled Spectacular to Salina in 2004. Since settling in Salina, it has grown to utilize all of Salina’s hotels/motels, two of Salina’s City parks, Salina’s main drag, Santa Fe Ave, and the beautiful Stiefel Theatre, the Saline County Expo Center and Salina Auto Auction to handle all the kool attractions it creates. Ol’ School Events All of the traditional, “Ol’ School”, events remain part of the fun! On Thursday evening the 6th annual Spectacular 4 Sundown Cruise where 100’s of hot-rodders will make passes up and down Santa Fe in front of jam-packed sidewalks. The parade will begin at 7:30pm and is free and open to the public. It’s a great way to get a glimpse of what you’ll see in the park over the weekend. Always a BIG draw of the event is the “Run-Whatcha’Brung Friday Evening Drags” south of Dean Evans Stadium just off Markley Road. Drags start at 5pm and run till dusk. Watch 100’s of hotrods, kustoms, and special exhibition drag cars making eight-mile passes down the legendary old Salina Airport runway, where they staged professional drag races in the 50’s. Admission is $10 per person for bleacher area seating. Don’t miss the “One Night with Elvis” spectacular concert, Saturday night, July 30, 8pm, at the Stiefel Theatre, featuring Legends In Concert theatre star, Victor Trevino Jr. and the Spinout Band, and Spinettes. Also see special guest star Bill Holden with tribute to Roy Orbison. Emcee will be Branson singer and songwriter Eddie Valen. Tickets are $25, sold on a firstcome first-served basis. Come and experience why Elvis Presley was, and still remains today, The King of Rock & Roll. At the BIG “Show and Shine”, in beautiful Oakdale Park, you’ll see Hollywood celebrities, Pin Up & Lookers Beauty Contests; Vintage Spoke-tacular Bicycle Show; legendary Hall of Fame kustom car builders, automotive vendors, pin stripers, swappers, Model Car & Truck Spectacular, and food vendors; Two stages of Live Rock & Roll and Rock-A-Billy music; Top-chopping cars on site at the Backyard and Godzilla Garage with California customizers Bill Hines and Keith Dean; $5,000 in cash awards and the Top 25 coveted awards at the Spectacular Awards Ceremony on Sunday.
