Habitat family partners joined corporate and
community volunteers to work on 11 houses on
Clay Street in Annapolis and nine houses on
Jefferson Street in Baltimore City during the
Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter Work Project.
The first three of 11 new homeowners moved
into their Habitat houses in the historic Clay
Street community of Annapolis. The project—a
collaboration between the City of Annapolis,
Habitat for Humanity of the Chesapeake and a
private developer—creates homeownership
opportunities for families who have been living
in public housing.

with a variety of corporate and private partners
including the Build-A-Block coalition of public
and private school students, who did everything
from raising funds to hanging dry wall.
Habitat for Humanity of the Chesapeake
Family Services
In the Patterson Park community, five family
partners moved into their Habitat homes as a
result of the Neighborhood Stabilization Program,
which made it possible for Habitat to purchase
and renovate foreclosed properties. Eventually the
program will bring more than 50 Habitat homeowners to the community and reclaim properties
that might otherwise remain vacant.
Habitat’s Homebuyer Education program
continued to prepare Habitat families for the
opportunities and challenges of homeownership.
The program also drew upon the expertise of
community partners such as Baltimore CASH,
the Fuel Fund of Maryland, and community
police and fire departments.
During the year, staff, family and friends
celebrated with 20 Habitat homeowners as
they received the keys to their new homes in
five communities from Shady Side in southern
Anne Arundel County to Washington Village in
Baltimore City.

For one week every year, former U.S. President
Jimmy Carter and his wife, Rosalynn, help put
poverty housing front and center in the global
consciousness and conscience. The Carter
Work Project is an annual reminder of the
desperate, ongoing need for decent, affordable
homes worldwide. But it is also a reminder of the
power of hope and the strength in numbers.
Habitat for Humanity of the Chesapeake
welcomed Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter to the
Jefferson Street community in East Baltimore
and the Clay Street community in Annapolis.
A luncheon was held in honor of the Carters,
joining together Habitat supporters, donors,
volunteers and homeowners.
Since 1984, the Carter Work Project
has provided housing solutions for
families in 13 countries around the
world, and in 18 states and the
District of Columbia in the United

Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter Work Project
The Carters committed to working with Habitat
for Humanity in 1984. Since then, the Carter
Work Project has provided housing solutions
for families in 13 countries around the world, 18
states in the U.S. and the District of Columbia.
In October, 2010, the Carters worked with more
than 1,000 volunteers in Washington, D.C.;
Baltimore and Annapolis, Maryland; Minneapolis
and St. Paul, Minnesota; and Birmingham,
Alabama. In each location, volunteers
concentrated on the rehabilitation of foreclosed
properties that were transformed into affordable
homes. Volunteers also built new houses and
created additional affordable housing
opportunities.

Construction
Construction crews comprised of staff,
volunteers, Red Hats, partner families, and
subcontractors built homes in Baltimore City
and Annapolis during FY11. A high point was
reached early in the year as hundreds gathered to
join President and Mrs. Carter on site
in both cities for a very special build week in
November. Ten new houses were started in the
Clay Street community of Annapolis and ten
Jefferson Street rowhouse rehabs were kicked
off at the same time.
Without letting the dust settle, crews continued
work at both sites. The first three new homes on
Clay Street wrapped up later in the year, along
with the next round of homes on our core areas
of Jefferson Street, the 2100-2400 blocks.
The spring brought a new partnership with
Healthy Neighborhoods, as Habitat Chesapeake
began purchasing and renovating additional
homes in East Baltimore as part of the federal
Neighborhood Stabilization Program (NSP).
These new homes added members to Habitat’s
family of owners in the neighborhoods
surrounding Patterson Park.
Community Engagement
Total volunteer contributions exceeded 44,000
hours in FY 11. Based on the federal guideline
for the value of a volunteer hour, that represents
$963,162 total value of volunteer labor to help
working families move into safe, decent,
affordable housing.
Construction volunteers contributed 36,995.05
hours, for a total of 4,624 volunteer days in FY
11. Of this number, 5,443 were contributed by
Red Hats, for a total of 678 volunteer days and
the Woodshop Red Hat group contributed 1,406
hours, for a total of 176 volunteer days.
Non-construction volunteers contributed a
total of 1,082 hours over a period of 130
volunteer days.

The Pasadena and Dundalk ReStores in FY 11
benefited from 4,718 volunteer hours over the
course of 158 volunteer days.
The total number of congregations connected
with Habitate Chesapeake in FY 11 was 276. In
addition, our faith coalitions and the Build-ABlock coalition, as well as campus chapters, continued in partnering toward building and sponsoring homes, as well as helping to lead events
and other public outreach efforts.
Other highlights:
FY 11 showed our first Veterans Build, held in
March of 2011, with an impressive showing of
over 300 volunteers from various military
branches, as well as many local, state, and federal government partners who joined in honor
the service of our veterans, active military, and
AmeriCorps population.
Finally, our Volunteer Appreciation Dinner in
April 2011 was attended by over 150 volunteers,
staff and partner families. We were deeply
grateful for the opportunity to applaud these
frequent volunteers.

talent, and heart to our mission. We truly could
not carry out our work without you.

Habitat for Humanity of the Chesapeake
Habitat for Humanity of the Chesapeake ReStore is a non-profit outlet
specializing in the resale of quality new and previously owned building
materials, home furnishing and appliances at 50 – 90% below retail prices.
All materials are donated to ReStore by local retail business, building
contractors, suppliers and individuals.
All donations are tax deductible and the proceeds support Habitat
Chesapeake to build simple, decent, affordable housing for families in
our community.
During 2011, Habitat Chesapeake opened its third ReStore in Halethrope
and remodeled the Dundalk store. At all three locations, Dundalk,
Halethorpe and Pasadena, the hours were extended to 9:00 am to 5:00pm,
Monday through Friday.
Other 2011 ReStore highlights include:
- Habitat Chesapeake ranked number one in sales of Masterwood
kitchen cabinets.
- Earth Day yielded a record day of $32,000 in sales.
- The number of pick-up donations increased 45% over 2010.
- Over 30 volunteers removed 101,000 pounds of metal salvage from the
Hopkins Keswick location, raising over $10,000.
