We had great weather and a record turn out! I‘d like to send a big thank you to all the volunteer parents and families, friends, teachers, students and alumni. You all did a great job grilling, selling, supervising games, watching kids ‗bounce‘, and even dancing! I‘d especially like to thank Ayse Francis for coordinating and greeting all of the volunteers and Tom Francis for building, painting and donating our brand new ‗Sponge in the Face‘ standee. A huge thank you goes out to Alan Au for donating his time and talent as our awesome DJ/MC. You kept us moving and grooving all day! I‘d like to send out a big thank you to Jodie Xua who organized the ice pops and ice keeping everything cool and for all her help and wisdom along the way. You kept me sane. I‘d like to acknowledge Kipp Shiotani for organizing our terrific dads and grills to cook all those delicious hot dogs and to the Cross Family for their generous donation of hot dogs, buns, sodas and snack bags. A big round of applause to Jenn Shiotani for choreographing, teaching and leading students, teachers, classes, and parents our first ever Flash Mob at Balboa! Great job Jenn and great job to everyone involved. We made over $1370! The picnic was a success because of your help and contribution. I‘m overwhelmed by the support but not surprised. The families at Balboa are wonderful and this event‘s success proves it. Sally Protiva - Fall Picnic Chair !!!!!! BALBOA'S FLASH MOB !!!!!!! We had over 200 people participate in the Flash Mob at 4:45pm at the Fall Picnic! It was a fun and fantastic experience for everyone! Thank you so much for supporting me in this crazy fun idea! Thank you to all the teachers & staff who participated! And for those teachers that asked me to come into their classroom for 15 minutes to teach their kids the routine, thank you for having me! I enjoyed teaching your students and getting them excited for our super "secret" event! Thank you to my lead dancers: Sydney Shiotani, Nathan Gabriel, Angelina Lim, Kathy Ceron, Hannah & Sierra Protiva, Judy & Dani Groode, Lori Glazer, Lauren McKee, Nicole Minkow, and Sydney Coons. We'll be working on editing the video and posting it on a secure site. - Jenn & Kipp Shiotani, BPA Co-Presidents GRILLIN' DADS! The "Grillin' Dads" at the fall picnic were an incredible success! Because of the generosity of the Cross family in donating all the food and the fathers who donated their time and cooking skills we made over $700 in food sales at the Fall Picnic this year! That's even with time out to join the Flash Mob! :) A big thank you to: Sergey Gorokhov, Robert Reel, Rafi Anoushian, Dennis Antilla, Brian Loo, Brian Kier, Mark Fredrickson, Ariel Banzon, Daniel Baron, Milton Escobar and Kipp Shiotani. Balboa Magnet is proud of our green fundraising efforts and we invite you to be a part of the Balboa Green Team. You can help by bringing your old cell phones and used ink cartridges to the school office for recycling. You can also support our efforts by shopping online at www.greenraising.com where you can purchase a variety of eco-friendly products and 25% of your purchase will be donated to our school. The children have already started recycling their Ziploc baggies at lunchtime and they are doing an amazing job! If you would like to find out more, or would like to volunteer to be a part of the Balboa Green Team, please email Kelly Mitchell at [email protected]. CONGRATULATIONS BALBOA STUDENTS! HERE IS WHAT YOU DID FOR THE ENVIRIONMENT LAST YEAR: YOU RECYCLED 2,000 PLASTIC BAGGIES! YOU HELPED TO PROVIDE: - A YEAR OF FRESH WATER FOR 8 PEOPLE WHO DON’T HAVE ACCESS TO WATER. - A MEAL FOR A FAMILY OF FOUR. - PROTECTION FOR 2.75 MILES OF WILDLIFE LAND!! - AND YOU PREVENTED 2,000 BAGGIES FROM BEING SENT TO THE DUMP! NO EXCEPTIONS! 11/11 Veterans Day—NO SCHOOL! HOW CAN I GET INVOLVED? Food Storage Brigade: We are collecting ziploc baggies at the lunch pavilion in the green collection bin. The bags are mailed to Terracycle where they are recycled into decking, containers and other products. Glue Crew Brigade: Teachers and volunteers in the TAP room will be collecting empty glue sticks and empty glue bottles. The glue sticks will be mailed to Terracycle for recycling. You can check out a video on Terracycle at: http://www.youtube.com/watch? v=kXaP_wPmw70. Terracycle pays .02 cents for each baggie and glue stick collected! Water Bottle Collection: Water bottle collection bins are located in each of the lunch pavilions. The bottles are taken to local recycling centers on a weekly basis and the collected funds are donated directly to the school. Greenraising: www.greenraising.com - is an online store that offers a wide variety of eco-friendly products such as re-useable water bottles, candles, recycled wrapping paper and more. 25% of purchases made using Balboa as the affiliate are donated to the school and, during an online fundraising period, we can earn 45%. Another website www.motherearthfundraising.com is similar. First Friday each month; , a Green Team member will be out at the carpool drop-off in the morning to collect any of the following: used ink cartridges, cell phones, glue sticks, ziploc baggies, water bottles, etc. We are hoping that the ease of simply being able to hand something out of the car door will encourage more people to start collecting their own household items to be recycled through our projects. E-Waste Fundraiser: We are working on finding a good date to hold our E-Waste fundraiser at the school. Green Mouse recycling will provide a truck, advertising banners, flyers and 3-4 employees to help collect and load the items. They take anything from computers to televisions to basic electronic appliances. October 2011 Sun Mon Tue 2 Wed 3 4 Fall Picture Day Fri 5 Sat 6 Magazine Drive Collection Day!
