Urban Stormwater Runoff Issues and Solutions
Minimize Lawn Chemicals
Use a Rain Barrel
Stormwater can carry pesticides and herbicides into the stream. Try natural
lawn care methods instead of chemicals. If using chemicals, make sure to
follow directions, and do not apply when the forecast is calling for rain.
Rain Barrels capture and store rain,
making it available for watering gardens,
washing cars, and other activities that you
would use your hose for. The collected
rainwater is used in place of your utility or
well water, therefore reducing costs. The
stored rainwater will not contribute to
stormwater runoff, which causes flooding
and carries pollutant to our streams.

Snow Information
WE NEED YOUR HELP!
In order for the Public Works Department to most effectively plow our streets, please help by keeping in mind the following policies:
Waste Receptacles: When placing your waste receptacle for pick up by the disposal company, please remember to keep the receptacle behind
the curb or edge of paving. Trash cans in the street can make it difficult for motorists to pass, and they also hinder winter snow plowing
operations.
Parking: From the beginning of the storm until the roadway is cleared, no vehicle, trailer, boat or camper should be parked in the roadway.
Violating this regulation could result in a fine.
If the roadway is the only parking option (due to lack of a driveway or a dangerously steep driveway), you may apply for an on-street snow/ice
parking permit from the Public Works Department. You will then be directed to park on a specific side of the street so that the snow removal
vehicles are still able to plow. To obtain such a permit, call (610) 408-3620.
There are a few streets exempt from this regulation:
• Berkley Road - full length
• Minor Ave - full length
• Fairview Ave - full length
• Mt. Pleasant Ave - east side
• Garrett Ave - full length
• Summit Ave - east side
• Henry Ave - full length
• WoodbineAve - east side, between W. Central
• Keystone Ave - west side
and Garrett Ave.
Sidewalks: Keeping sidewalks safe is another important winter concern. Residents must clear snow, sleet and ice from the sidewalks in front of
their property no more than 30 hours after a storm. For stubborn icy spots, be sure to use ice control methods such as salt or sawdust.
Hydrants: Please help our volunteer fire companies by clearing around fire hydrants after a storm.
Driveways and Parking Lots: Pushing, plowing or throwing snow from private property into the street is
prohibited.
MAILBOX POLICY
During plowing operations, occasionally mailboxes are damaged. This is usually not a result of the plow
contacting the mailbox; the damage occurs due to the weight of the snow or slush. In the event your mailbox is
damaged due to plowing operations, please contact the Public Works Department. If it is determined a
Township plow truck damaged a mailbox, the Township's policy in this regard is as follows:
• The Township will reimburse the property owner up to $100 for a mailbox they purchased (resident to provide receipt) or install a
standard "box store" mailbox and post or repair the existing mailbox (if poss ible).
• In either case, the new mailbox must be installed as far back from the edge of the road as Post Office regulations permit to reduce the
likelihood of a repeat occurrence.
• Property owners must notify the Township within 21 days after the snow event in which the mailbox was damaged to receive the
reimbursement or a new standard mailbox.
• If a driver is aware that a mailbox was damaged or if a resident contacts the Township to report a damaged mailbox, the resident will be
sent a copy of this policy within 24 hours.
• Questions should be directed to [email protected] or 610-408-3620.
PLOWING OPERATIONS
There are approximately 107 miles of Township roadway. We also perform snow and ice control on 12.5 miles of state owned roads. The
Township can mobilize up to twenty trucks for plowing operations. We also have backhoes and front end loaders to clear sleet and accumulated
snow (for example at the end of cul de sacs) when necessary. Depending upon the storm, we lease additional equipment to assist our forces in
clearing the roads for which we are responsible.
The Township has established primary roadways in each of our nine plowing routes that are done first to get the majority of residents moving.
Secondary and tertiary roads are done after the primary roads..
Please be patient and allow ample time for them to arrive in your area. In the event that problems do occur, call the office at
(610) 408-3620. During a storm, there is not always someone to answer the phone, but messages are checked regularly.
The Board of Supervisors will consider amendments to update Tredyffrin's snow-related ordinances later this year. More information will be
on the Township's website.

Winter Deicing Tips for Residents
Excess salt and other deicing chemicals can harm aquatic life in our streams and impact drinking water supplies. This
winter, you can help by following these environmentally friendly snow removal practices:
• Shovel snow before it turns to ice to limit the need for deicing chemicals like rock salt.
• Shovel snow onto permeable surfaces including gently sloping and level landscape and grassy areas so as the snow
melts it will soak into the ground rather than flow directly into a nearby storm drain or stream.
If you must use deicing chemicals, follow these suggestions…
• Control application of chemical deicers and avoid over application.
• Limit chemical applications near environmentally-sensitive areas including
springs, streams, ponds, wetlands, and water supply areas and sensitive
landscape and vegetation.
• Sand and sawdust can be used as an environmentally-friendly alternative to
commonly used salt products.
• Use salt substitutes that are less harmful including Calcium Chloride
(CaCl2) and Calcium Magnesium Acetate (CMA).
• For larger areas, apply salt as a brine solution to prevent drift off of paved
surfaces.
• After snowmelt, sweep up residues, including sand, to prevent it from
washing into storm drains and streams.
Information from the Public Works Department
Roadside vegetation: Please note that overhanging branches and vegetation can make it difficult for the
motoring public to pass on streets. Overhanging branches and limbs can also hinder snow plowing efforts in the
winter months. Please remember that it is the property owner's responsibility to keep their road frontage free of
overhanging tree limbs and vegetation.
The Tredyffrin Township Property Maintenance Code § 149-5B states: "Premises with landscaping and lawns, hedges and
bushes shall be kept from becoming overgrown and unsightly where exposed to public view, so that they do not constitute a
blighting factor to adjoining property."
Sewer vents: Please remember that all sewer vents are to be capped, and should be 6" above the soil surface.
Leaves and cut grass: Yard waste of any type should not be placed in the street. Yard waste such as leaves and cut grass clog
inlet tops and can contribute to ponding on the road in heavy downpours. Leaves not only clog inlets, but can make for
slippery travel on road surfaces.

School is Open - Driving Tips
Tredyffrin Township Police in partnership with the AAA Motorists Association Safety Campaign reminds us
that with each new school year, we must remain cautious with our driving habits and pay strict attention to
traffic laws.
The greatest threat children face today is motor vehicle crashes. While walking, cycling or as a passenger in a
motor vehicle, these crashes are the leading cause of death for children ages 3 and older. The problem escalates
during the months kids are in school. Kids are vulnerable for several reasons.
• They are small and less visible to motorists.
• It is more difficult for children to judge traffic situations, because their peripheral vision is one-third
narrower than an adult's.
• Children do not always possess the capability to make sound judgments.
• Children can be easily distracted, especially when around other kids.
In short, kids are not adults - and it's up to drivers to compensate for these differences.
Parents of school aged children are equally reminded to actively participate in safe pedestrian and
motorist practices.

You have probably heard by now that PECO's electrical rate caps are due to expire on December 31, 2010. This electrical
deregulation process was mandated by the State in the 1990's and the transition period is ending.
Some important facts to know about Pennsylvania Electric Deregulation:
• You can now shop around for electrical providers
• If you don't shop, PECO will become your default provider and their cost may not be the lowest
• Your electric bill is split into three categories - generation cost (variable), distribution cost (fixed), and transmission cost
(fixed)
• There used to be only one variable on how much your electricity cost -how much you used. Now there are two - how
much you use and how much it costs your generator to produce it
• Electricity prices used to be fixed for long periods. That will change. Electricity is now going to be priced the same way
gasoline is - with daily changes. But, by choosing the right provider and program for you, you can minimize the changes
and get a good price.
You should start shopping now.
The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission has started two websites that can help get you started. See the websites at
www.puc.state.pa.us/utilitychoice and www.papowerswitch.com.
