TO OR RY Y H IS I ST The National Association of Medical Minority Educators, Inc. (NAMME) was established in 1975 by a group of educators concerned about the shortage of minority health care providers and the need to establish an organization to address important issues impacting minority students, faculty and administrators in health professions schools. Founding members met at Howard University to discuss the feasibility of establishing an organization to address these concerns and to create mechanisms for ensuring access to health professions training programs. Institutions instrumental in the founding of NAMME include: Howard University, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Bowman Gray, Georgetown, Temple University, Medical College of Wisconsin, Hahnemann, Rutgers, Tufts, University of Tennessee, SUNY Downstate, Tulane, University of Pennsylvania, University of Illinois at Chicago and New York University. Baylor College of Medicine and Texas Southern University hosted the first NAMME National Conference, held in Houston, Texas in September 1976. The constitution and bylaws were established during this conference. Dr. Charles Ireland, from the School of Medicine at Temple University was named the first president. Since that time, NAMME has grown into a 501c (3) tax­exempt organization with significant representation from all aspects of health professions education. The organization has members representing health professions institutions across the country and continues to attract members from all health disciplines. M
SI IO ON N M IS I SS NAMME is a national organization dedicated to developing and sustaining productive relationships as well as action­oriented programs among national, state, and community stakeholders working to ensure racial and ethnic diversity in all of the health professions. NAMME also seeks to provide critical guidance and professional development opportunities for individuals dedicated to these efforts and the students they serve. V
IO ON N V IS I SI NAMME visualizes itself as the lead organization in providing informational resources, training and advocacy to stakeholders working to insure diversity in the health professions. Our efforts will serve as a foundation to strengthen academic preparation and access to health professions education for individuals who are members of historically underrepresented groups, and those who are economically and/or educationally disadvantaged. NAMME expects its efforts to ultimately contribute to the reduction of health disparities wherever they exist and to reduce the incidence of poor health outcomes among the underserved. NAMME envisions a society where: · Parity exists between practitioners from historically underrepresented groups and national population ratios, across all health sciences disciplines; · There is a cadre of students from historically underrepresented groups, successfully enrolled in and graduating from all health science disciplines; · There is a critical mass of health sciences faculty and managers from historically underrepresented groups who are gainfully employed at institutions of higher learning and other post­secondary educational settings and; · There is no discernible difference, relative to the health status of communities of color and of other ethnicities, across the various categories of diseases and disabilities impacting U.S. citizens. A CT C TI NAMME National Conference The NAMME National Conference is designed to provide professional development, opportunities for networking with colleagues in the field, and serve as a platform to develop new program initiatives. The annual conference attracts not only NAMME members but also other professionals concerned with the organization’s stated objectives.

Health through Education Promotion The NAMME K­12 Initiative: “Promoting Health through Education” provides an opportunity, whenever possible, for primary and secondary school students to participate in a health professional’s art and essay competition. Annually, NAMME sponsors this community­based competition in cooperation with local public schools. Students advance through several levels of competition, and finalists participate in a recognition and awards ceremony during the annual conference.
College Student Development Program The College Student Development Program includes a full day workshop and recruitment session for undergraduate students. The Program normally includes a motivational speaker, workshops focusing on admissions and application procedures, preparation for standardized examinations, and offers suggestions on how to access, understand and navigate various financial aid processes. Each year, a large contingency of students are given an opportunity to meet with a multitude of recruiters representing health profession schools from around the country.
NAMME Scholarship Created in 1995, the NAMME Scholarship is awarded annually to underrepresented minority students who have completed the first year of health professions training. Nominated students are selected based upon their academic record, community service, financial need, and personal statements. The amount and number of scholarships varies. The deadline for the submission of all documents is July 1 of each year. R
IO ON NS S R EG E GI NAMME is organized into four regions. The organization of the regions parallels the National Board of Directors with elected officers and chairpersons. Each region sponsors an annual spring meeting and conference to address general and regional issues consistent with the organization’s mission. June 2008 Dear NAMME Members and Colleagues: On behalf of the Board of Directors of the National Association of Medical Minority Educators, Inc. (NAMME), we would like to invite you to attend the 33 rd Annual Conference. The conference will be held September 17 – 21, 2008 at the Doubletree Hotel Crystal City in Arlington, VA. The conference theme is “A New NAMME: Building Momentum – Raising Awareness” and seeks to address legislative, educational and health disparities issues that impact our mission to ensure racial and ethnic diversity in all of the health professions. The goals for this conference are to develop productive relationships among our stakeholders and to expand upon the progress we have made as an association since inception in 1975. Keeping this in mind, we are delighted to partner with the National Council for Diversity in Health Professions to provide a Pre­Conference Legislative Day to be held on Wednesday, September 17, 9:00 am – 3:00 pm. This exciting initiative will entail:
