Several sources indicate that this was the residence of renowned motion picture star Carole Lombard
in the 1930s. Some accounts state that the residence was jointly owned by Lombard and her
husband, Clark Gable, also a renowned motion picture star. However, building permits, corroborated
by aerial images, indicate that the residence was constructed in 1953, well after Lombard had died
and Gable was known to be living at an estate in Encino. The permits indicate that the residence and
ancillary building were constructed for J.B. Moises and make no reference to Lombard or Gable.

only two that remains in its original location. Building is accompanied by a freestanding pole sign with
a heart-shaped face and neon illumination. The property appears to meet local criteria only and may
not meet significance thresholds for National Register or California Register eligibility.

historically hosted dance nights that attracted such celebrity acts as Ike and Tina Turner, Iron
Butterfly, and the Standells. Notably, it was also one of very few places in the Valley where African
Americans could congregate in the era of the African American civil rights movement, and thus
became a popular recreational venue among members of the Valley’s African American community at
this time. The property appears to meet local criteria only and may not meet significance thresholds

Reason:
Excellent example of a 1960s wall mounted sign; features neon illumination, iconic corporate
typeface, and imagery that evoke the commercial ethos of the era. Believed to be the last remaining
example of this sign prototype, which was used by the Shakey's restaurant chain in the 1960s and
‘70s and featured a large plastic pizza chef. Evaluation relates to the sign only; building does not
appear to be eligible. Signs appear to meet local criteria only and may not meet significance
thresholds for National Register or California Register eligibility.

Reason:
Significant as representing the earliest pattern of development in the area; a rare remaining example
of an intact 1910s residence in Northridge. One of few extant resources associated with the early
community of Zelzah. The residence was originally located at 9003 Reseda Boulevard and was slated
for demolition in the 1970s; however, local residents and civic organizations opposed demolition of
the building and successfully lobbied to have it moved to the present site in 1978. Due to relocation
and alterations, including window and cladding replacement, the residence does not retain sufficient
integrity for listing in the National Register.

Research indicates that this was the former residence of gossip columnist Louella Parsons. Parsons, a
syndicated columnist who worked under William Randolph Hearst and is considered to be a pioneer
in tabloid journalism, resided here during her productive period. However, the house has been
extensively altered and thus does not retain sufficient integrity to convey its significance.
