A dream of saving lives
The history of Ambu started as a dream.
A dream of developing products that could
help save lives. It was in 1937 that Holger
Hesse, a Danish doctor, laid down the most
important foundation of all – the ambition
of making a difference and saving lives.

Over 70 years later, this ambition is more
alive than ever. Ambu’s most important
task is to develop products which change
routines for customers, make their work
more productive and thereby improve

Ambu® Face Masks
Ambu has a long tradition for producing and marketing
quality facemasks to pre-hospital and hospital customers.
Whether the customer wishes to use a reusable or
single use facemask the balanced portfolio from
Ambu offers a choice. Our range of reusable silicone
facemasks can be machine washed or sterilised by
autoclave. The single use facemasks eliminate the
time consuming cleaning process and reduce the risk
of cross contamination.
Facemasks are generally used for assisted ventilation in
pre-hospital and hospital settings and for anesthetis-
8
ing patients before surgery. Ambu facemasks fulfil all
the most important characteristics that are required
from users. They provide a tight seal with a minimum
of pressure being applied. The dome is spacious and
transparent in order to give the user good visibility
to monitor the patient ‘s condition. The design and
shape of the dome ensure good grip and handling
for the user during extended ventilation.
Our facemask range complies with international ISO
standards concerning connector sizes and should fit
almost all resuscitators.

The Ambu face mask range is used for positive pressure ventilation. It can be mechanical or manual bag-mask ventilation in both the pre hospital and
hospital area. The broad range of both single-use and reusable masks ensures that users despite differences and variation in preference can always
find an Ambu face mask to match their needs.
Conclusions:
The resuable face masks from Ambu can be repeatedly machine washed
or sterilised by autoclave. They are made from long lasting material and
can be autoclaved at 134 degree Celsius.
Note that the Infant Silicone Transparent face mask #0A can not be
autoclaved as it is made from a rubber foam.
Most of the face masks except for the Open Cuff Silicone can be supplied
with and without check valve. The check valve allows the user to change
the cuff pressure to make the cuff softer or harder. This is done simply by
using a syringe to inflate or deflate the cuff.
All Ambu face masks are latex free.

The Ambu Aura range is backed up by over 40 clinical studies and research articles. Below are some excerpts from clinical investigations/studies on
Aura laryngeal masks.
Conclusions:
Easy insertion
n
Studies have concluded that the Ambu AuraOnce laryngeal mask is
easier to insert than other laryngeal masks. The 70-degree angle of the
airway tube may well be responsible for that, because it emulates the
human anatomy. The easy insertion also means that there is no need
to place fingers in the patient’s mouth.
Less traumatic
n
Ambu laryngeal masks are less traumatic with respect to complications
during the anaesthetic pre-, peri-and postoperative procedure. Clinical
studies conclude that post-operative complaints are infrequent. To get
full versions of these publications, and to see the complete list of
available investigation/studies please see our web page: www.ambu.com
Higher seal pressure
n
Ambu laryngeal masks have shown to have a higher oropharyngeal
seal pressure in a number of clinical studies. A specific study shows
that seal pressure is not influenced by the position of the patient’s
head. Seal pressure is crucial for ventilation. If pressure cannot be
maintained, ventilation of the patient will fail.

Ambu® TubeChek
Main Technical Data
Size (Length x Diameter): 83 x 59 mm
Tube connection: 15 mm (ISO)
Weight: approx: 45 g
Material: PVC (disposable)
As recommended in the ERC Guidelines 2005, the
single-use Ambu TubeChek is a device that rapidly
and reliably confirms the correct placement of
endotracheal tubes.
This simple tool uses the anatomical differences
between the oesophagus and trachea to confirm
correct ET tube placement. If there is negative
pressure, the oesophagus has been intubated. If air
can be aspirated, correct tracheal intubation has
been achieved.
This is because if the tube is in the soft, unsupported
oesophagus, the walls will collapse around the end
of the ET tube creating negative pressure if you
attempt to aspirate air. If the tube is in the rigid
trachea, air can easily be aspirated.
As instant feedback is achieved, there is no need for
initial ventilation to obtain CO2 detection. Hereby
potential stomach inflation is eliminated.
The glowing bulb is visible in the dark making it the
ideal solution for emergency services.
Main features and benefits
Instant feedback

Videolaryngoscope
PENTAX Airway Scope (AWS) Videolaryngoscope
and PENTAX Single Patient Use blade (PBlade)
Ambu Respiratory Care offers a range of products
that facilitate safe, effective and uncomplicated
ventilation and airway management. Launched in
2006, the Pentax Airway Scope (AWS) is a rigid
video laryngoscope for intubation that compliments
the existing Respiratory Care portfolio.
The PENTAX-AWS is fast, accurate and portable,
and incorporates advanced imaging technology with
optimised ergonomic design. Utilising a 2.4” highresolution colour LCD video monitor, identification of
anatomical structures can be easily obtained. When
combined with the unique targeting system, fast and
accurate placement of the endotracheal (ET) tube is
achieved during tracheal intubation.
The PENTAX-AWS and the specialised single patient
use PBlade enable the operator to guide an ET tube
(for breathing) past the vocal cords and down into
the trachea (the windpipe), while directly observing
the conditions inside the oral cavity to avoid
traumatizing the patient. The PBlade is compatible
with a wide range of ET tube sizes.
With this device, there is no need to extend the
patient's neck or apply excessive force. By placing
the PENTAX-AWS under the epiglottis and raising
it lightly, it is possible to insert an ET tube into the
trachea. The PENTAX-AWS enables even less
experienced users to perform fast and accurate
tracheal intubation, thus greatly reducing the burden
on the user and the patient alike.

Ambu ECG Electrodes
In 1971 Jan Rasmussen, a young Danish engineer,
recognised the need for an electrode which was better
than those on the market at that time, in terms of both
ECG trace quality and adhesion. He created a unique
design with the offset connector, silver/silver chloride
sensor, wet gel and double ring adhesive – features
which still characterise the Ambu Blue Sensor
products today. The main partner during the design
26
process was the University of Copenhagen, with whom
this longstanding relationship still exists. This electrode
became the world famous Ambu® Blue Sensor.
Mr. Rasmussen founded Medicotest and launched a
range of innovative, high quality, single-patient use
electrodes for various medical applications. In 2001
Ambu International A/S acquired Medicotest A/S.

market with an offset connector, thus meeting customer
needs for a connector positioned away from the sensor
area, unlike many centre stud electrodes on the market.
Blue Sensor SU
The advantages of the offset connector are:
nReduction of (movement) artefact
nInstant and precise diagnosis, ensuring that vital
tests need not to be repeated
nEasier handling of the electrodes
nEliminates patient discomfort, as clinicians do not
need to press down on the patient’s chest when
applying the electrodes
nGel area is not exposed to pressure when the
cables are connected
nNo risk of spreading wet gel into the adhesive area
Electrodes are often pulled about due to a patient
moving or fidgeting, or the cables being tugged. With
centre stud electrodes this would result in the sensor
area being pulled away from a patient’s skin, resulting
in a disrupted recording, movement artefact and false
alarms. With an offset connector electrode the
connector is positioned away from the sensor area of
the electrode, meaning that if a patient moves or
fidgets or if the cables are pulled, only the connector
will move, not the sensor area. This design feature
ensures that there is no disruption to an ECG
recording, there is no interference or artefact and
there are no false alarms. Which ultimately saves
time, money and frustration.
The right electrode for each test
To obtain a reliable and accurate ECG reading that
you can depend on, the electrode must be specific to
the application. That is why Ambu offers a complete
range of electrodes that are designed, developed
and manufactured in close co-operation with the
medical community.
Skin care for every patient
Most of Blue Sensor electrodes utilise a wet gel for
lowest impedance and best trace quality. However,
neonatal electrodes and White Sensor have solid gel
28
which is more suitable for babies’ skin and fast
placement in short term monitoring applications.
Ideas that work for life
How to place Blue Sensor electrodes
To ensure a lasting accurate ECG signal, careful
positioning is important:
n
Wipe wet, greasy, dark or thick skin using a dry
cloth or napkin, thus removing dead skin and
increasing blood circulation. A fast and accurate
signal will be obtained.
n
Remove the electrode from the backing material
n
Run a finger around the outside of each electrode
without touching its centre thus preventing the
gel from spreading onto the adhesive area and
ensuring that the electrode stays in place
n
Position the electrode so that when connected to
the monitor cable, the electrode is directly in line
with the cable

Holter, Event Recording
and Long-term Monitoring
Holter monitoring is a long-term diagnostic procedure
that is carried out on ambulatory patients who
experience episodic palpitations or arrhythmias.
Event Recording is a diagnostic monitoring procedure
that is performed over an extended time on patients
who experience transient or infrequent arrhythmias.
Long-term monitoring is typically performed continuously in Intensive Care Units, Neonatal Intensive
Care Units, High Dependency Units, and Coronary
Care Units. Some patients stay for extended periods
and will require continuous ECG monitoring.
All minor details of the ECG trace will be investigated
as they may be indicators for cardiac problems.

Facial - Ambu® Neuroline 720
Surface Electrodes
The AASM recommends using
two electrodes around the eyes
and three under the chin.
The Ambu Neuroline 720 is a single use self-adhesive
electrode featuring a highly conductive wet gel for an
instant and stable signal. The strong yet skin-friendly
adhesive makes the electrode ideal for sleep studies,
as the electrode stays in place during the entire
examination, even if the patient sweats. The highly
flexible oblong shaped low profile electrode fits well
around the eyes and under the chin.
Main features and benefits
Improving patient care
n
The Ambu Neuroline 720 is a patient-friendly and
comfortable alternative to traditional cup
electrodes. The strong and yet skin-friendly
adhesive combined with flexible materials and a
low profile makes the Ambu Neuroline 720 less
irritating for the patient.
Easy to use
n
The ‘ready to use’ electrode is quick to place on
the patient and after recording, is easily removed
with a firm press on the centre of the electrode. Its
strong initial tack ensures that the electrode stays
in place and its highly conductive wet gel is ready
to pick up signals in seconds. Application of the
electrode is both fast and straightforward.
Reliable recordings
n
The combination of silver/silver chloride and wet gel
provides stable, low impedance signals throughout
the duration of the test. The low profile and strong
adhesion ensure that electrodes are not dislodged
during sleep studies, even when patients sweat.
Time saving
n
The single use Ambu Neuroline 720 offers
efficiency and time saving. The electrode is ready
to use from the pouch with no need for conductive
gel and paste. Gauze and tape are not required to
keep the electrode in place.

CannuTherm
New AASM recommendations
came into effect in July 2008
which call for the use of a thermal
sensor to detect apnea as well as
a pressure airflow sensor to detect
hypopnea. Ambu Sleepmate
CannuThermTM thermal pressure
sensors are designed to comply
with these recommendations.
The Ambu Sleepmate CannuTherm is an integrated
thermal pressure sensor that detects both apnea and
hypopnea. The light and comfortable sensor
promotes a relaxed patient, improved data collection
and a more accurate PSG study. The CannuTherm
consists of a reusable nasal and oral sensor and a
specially designed single use cannula.
Main features and benefits
Improving patient care
n
The CannuTherm is designed to provide optimal
comfort to the patient during PSG studies. The
light compact design means that the patient will
only feel the small cannula on his face.
CannuTherm
Ease of use
Reliable recordings
n
When using more comfortable integrated sensors,
patients are less likely to dislodge them during
sleep. A comfortable sensor promotes a relaxed
patient, improved data collection and a more
accurate PSG study.
n
The reusable thermoprobe attaches directly and
securely into a special port in the single use
cannula. The sensor remains in place eliminating
the need to tape separate sensors together.

Ambu® Resuscitators
Ambu practically invented the market for manual
resuscitators more than fifty years ago, when the original
Ambu bag was introduced. It consisted of a double
wall, self-inflating bag that became a milestone in
medical emergency. Since then, Ambu has continuously
improved the product to the current Mark IV double
wall resuscitator, which is (quite) unique in the world.
Several ranges of resuscitators (reusable and disposable)
have been developed since then including the Mark IV
family of reusable silicone resuscitators, and the
SPUR II family of disposable resuscitators.
A bag-valve-mask (also known as a BVM or Ambu
bag) is a hand-held device which can be used to
ventilate a patient who is either not breathing or
who is breathing inadequately. The device is a normal
part of a resuscitation kit for trained professionals,
64
such as ambulance crew. The BVM is frequently used
in hospitals, and is an essential part of a crash cart.
The device is used extensively in the operating room
to ventilate an anaesthetised patient in the minutes
before a mechanical ventilator is attached. The
device is self-filling with air, although additional
oxygen (O2) can be used.
Using a BVM to ventilate a patient is frequently
called "bagging". Manual ventilation is often
necessary in medical emergencies when the patient's
breathing is insufficient (respiratory failure) or has
ceased completely (respiratory arrest). The BVM
resuscitator is used to manually provide mechanical
ventilation in preference to mouth-to-mouth
resuscitation (either direct or through an adjunct
such as a pocket mask).

How does a resusicitator function?
A resuscitator consists of a flexible air chamber, about the size of a rugby
ball, attached to a facemask via a shutter valve. When the air chamber or
"bag" is squeezed, the device forces air into the patient's lungs. When the
bag is released, it self-inflates, drawing in ambient air or a low pressure
oxygen flow supplied from a regulated cylinder, whilst the patient's lungs
deflate to the atmosphere through the one way valve. Bag and valve
combinations can also be attached to an alternate airway adjunct, such
as an endotracheal tube or laryngeal mask airway, instead of the
mask with which it is supplied. A small HME filter is also often used.
A bag-valve-mask can be used without added oxygen to provide air to
the patient, but supplemental oxygen is recommended as it increases the
partial pressure of oxygen in the air, helping to increase oxygenation in
the patient. Most devices also have a reservoir, which can fill with oxygen
while the patient is exhaling (a process which happens passively), in
order to increase the amount of oxygen that can be delivered to the
patient to nearly 100%.

The term “Ambu bag” is a common phrase in manual
ventilation. It refers to bag-valve-mask systems that
are used to ventilate patients with limited or no
respiration. The original Ambu Bag with the unique
double wall concept was initially introduced over 50
years ago and it remains one of the most advanced
solutions for manual ventilation.
The Ambu Mark IV Adult resuscitator is easier to
hold, easier to use, completely autoclavable for
reuse, and more effective at what they have been
designed to help you do – keep your patients
breathing. The user-friendly design and double wall
concept makes Ambu bags more robust, and users
benefit from an exceptional visual and tactile
sensation of lung compliance during manual
resuscitation – thus making ventilation safer and
more secure. Built-in pressure limiting prevents
compression of the self-inflating bag if there is any
resistance in the patient’s airway.
The Mark IV features a unique built-in pressure
limiting system that ensures a maximum inflation
pressure of 70cm H20. The inner bag has small
holes that ensure users never exceed a ventilation
pressure of 70cm H2O. The double wall concept
means the user can easily detect excessive inflation
pressure.
The Mark IV range consists of two versions, the Mark
IV Adult and Mark IV Baby. Unlike many other manual
resuscitators where there are three sizes, the Mark IV
double wall concept requires only two versions. The
sizes overlap to allow for variations of patient size and
weight, and offer subsequent benefits of lower unit
stock levels, spare parts and accessories.

The term “Ambu bag” is a common phrase in manual
ventilation. It refers to bag-valve-mask systems that
are used to ventilate patients with limited or no
respiration. The original Ambu Bag with the unique
double wall concept was initially introduced over 50
years ago and it remains one of the most advanced
solutions for manual ventilation.
The Ambu Mark IV Baby resuscitator is easier to hold,
easier to use, completely autoclavable for reuse, and
The Mark IV Baby features a unique built-in pressure
limiting system. The inner bag has small holes which
prevent the ventilation pressure exceeding 45cm H2O.
This is in addition to the 40cm H2O safety pop-off
valve that is built into the patient valve.
The double wall concept means the user can easily
detect if the inflation pressure is high. Pressure limiting
is extremely important when ventilating infants and
paediatric patients, as excessive ventilation pressure
can cause lung damage or gastric inflation.
*International guidelines recommend that all manual
resuscitators for infant and paediatric patients should
be equipped with a pressure limitation mechanism so
that the airway pressure does not exceed 45cm H2O

Ambu® PEEP valves
Ambu PEEP valves have been designed to provide
unique resistance characteristics when used with
manual resuscitators, ventilators, anaesthesia machines
(where specified by the manufacturer) and CPAP
systems. Ambu PEEP valves can be fitted directly to
the patient valve of any original Ambu resuscitator
without additional connectors. The purpose of a PEEP
valve is to create a positive pressure in the lungs
after expiration in order to avoid a collapse in the
alveoli. Medical conditions that require the use of
PEEP valves are pulmonary oedema, drowning/near
drowning accidents, aspiration, thoracic trauma, and
inhalation of carbon dioxide.
PEEP is an adjuvant to ventilation to help maintain
functional residual capacity (FRC). At the end of
expiration, the PEEP exerts pressure to oppose passive
emptying of the lung and to keep the airway pressure
above the atmospheric pressure. The presence of
PEEP opens up collapsed or unstable alveoli and
increases the FRC and surface area for gas exchange.
Positive End Expiratory Pressure is generally used to
maintain adequate oxygenation of the blood. PEEP
is more specifically recommended in assisted
ventilation of preterm infants.
Ambu Reusable PEEP Valve 10 is adjustable between
0-10cm H2O, and is available with 30mm and 18mm
connectors.
Ambu Reusable PEEP Valve 20 is adjustable between
1.5-20cm H2O, and is available with 30mm and
22/19mm connectors for respirators/CPAP systems.
Ambu Disposable PEEP 20 is adjustable between
1.5-20cm H2O, with a 30mm connector.
Main features and benefits
Compatibility with all Ambu resuscitators
n
It is quick and easy to fit the PEEP valve to the
patient valve of any Ambu resuscitator. There is
no need to stock additional parts or adaptors.
Easy to use

Ambu® Training Manikins
1958 – Launch of training equipment
Over 50 years ago, Ambu launched its first training
product – the Ambu Phantom, which could be artificially
respirated. When Dr. Holger Hesse and Professor Ruben
developed the "Ambu bag" in 1956, they were faced with
the problem that nowhere in the world would doctors
allow a new product to be demonstrated on a patient.
The partners needed a piece of equipment with which to
demonstrate their resuscitation bag – namely a manikin
that could be artificially respirated. In addition to "bag
resuscitation", the Ambu Phantom could also be respira-
ted by mouth-to-mouth or mouth-to-nose. Even back in
those early days, the manikin included an ingenious
hygienic system that protected against cross-infection.
In 1960 the Phantom was further improved with the
introduction of external cardiac massage. The introduction
of cardio pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and the need to
train specialist medical personnel, led to a greater demand
for Ambu training equipment. For the first time, doctors,
emergency medical personnel and first-aiders could be
professionally trained, and greater emphasis was placed
on the research and development of training equipment.

Ambu® Hygienic System
Safety and comfort
No internal cleaning – No cross infection – Maintenance free Ambu Manikins have been designed with
a unique hygienic system that offers protection for
students from cross contamination and makes
internal cleaning entirely redundant, saving both time
and money. All manikins are made from high quality
materials that ensure a long product life and meet all
training guidelines of the AHA (American Heart
Association), ERC (European Resuscitation Council)
and all other resuscitation councils.
Main features and benefits
Realistic training
n
Ambu manikins simulate realistic and accurate
anatomical features for CPR. This system allows
ventilation through the mouth and nose.
Ventilation can be seen, and exhalation through
the nose and mouth can be felt and heard.
Eliminate risk of cross infection
n
The patented hygienic system provides safety
and comfort for each individual student. When
teaching mouth-to-mouth or mouth-to-nose
resuscitation, the student comes into contact
only with his/her own breath and mouthpiece.
Practical
n
Encourages knowledge retention through the
look-listen-feel concept. A personal face piece
and disposable head bag are placed on the head
of all Ambu Basic Life Support manikins and
Ambu Defib Trainer Systems.
Insufflation
When air is blown through the mouth
or nose of the face piece (red), the
disposable head bag (green) fills.
The air already inside the head of the
manikin (not the student’s breath) then
passes into the manikin, expanding
the lungs/stomach. In that way no
contaminated air gets into the manikin
and internal cleaning is not necessary.
Expiration
On completion of insufflation, the
“clean” air returns towards the head
and compresses the head bag. In the
process, the student’s air is exhaled
through mouth and nose.

Ambu® Immobilisation and Transport
All Ambu immobilization products have been designed
with an emphasis on adjustment. After all, the better
the fit, the better the degree of immobilization and the
better the survival rates - with reduced risk of longterm or permanent injuries. Moreover, whenever
possible, products have been designed to fold flat,
thus reducing the need for storage space in cramped
emergency vehicles.
Our ideas are designed to facilitate the rescue work.
This central principle of course applies to the area of
96
emergency medicine. Therefore, it is for us more than
a commitment to offer innovative concepts that can be
used effectively as an expert in the emergency field.
Thanks to their innovative design and practical
features, Ambu immobilization products ensure faster,
easier and more accurate fitting, thus saving time in
situations where seconds count.
