VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL 2016 - Grossnickle Church of the Brethren
Grossnickle Church of the Brethren
June 2016
VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL 2016
“Deep Sea Discovery: God is with Me Wherever I Go”
Vacation Bible School will be June 20-24, 6:30-8:30 pm. Deep Sea Discovery will teach our children
(and adult helpers!) the wonderful news that they are never alone. God is always with them and he
loves them more than they can ever imagine! Children will know God is always with them, explore
God’s presence in their lives, and serve God by serving others.
God KNOWS me: God knows Noah’s heart (Genesis 6-9)
God HEARS me: God hears Jonah pray (Jonah 1-3)
God STRENGTHENS me: Jesus strengthens Peter in the storm (Matthew 14)
God LOVES me: Jesus loves the disciples-and everyone (John 21)
God SENDS me: God sends Paul to tell his story (Acts 13 & 14)
All children ages three through Grade 5 are invited to enjoy Bible stories, music, crafts, and fun!
For the closing program on Friday evening, June 24, the children will sing some of the VBS songs
they have learned. Parents are encouraged to stay with their children Friday evening, as classes will be
dismissed from the sanctuary to load onto hay wagons for the traditional closing hayride. Children must
be accompanied by an adult to participate in the hayride. After the hayride, everyone will meet back
at the parish hall to view the wonderful crafts children have worked on and enjoy an ice cream social.
You may register your child(ren) in advance by calling the church office at 301-293-9516, or you may
pick up a registration form from the entry table at church, fill it out, and drop in the big envelope that
will be affixed to the VBS bulletin board. Take an extra form and invite a friend!
VBS volunteers are needed to serve as teachers and helpers. A sign-up sheet is posted on the
VBS bulletin board. If you have any questions please feel free to contact the VBS director, Kelly
Rumpf, at 301-432-4723.

FATHER’S DAY INVITATION
All fathers (dads, grand-dads and other significant father figures)
are invited to attend Sunday School at 9:30 am with their children
(including youth) on Father’s Day, Sunday, June 19. On this
special day, the students look forward to sharing their songs, Bible
lessons and classroom discussions and activities with you. Please
plan to join your children for this special occasion!
FROM THE CHURCH BOARD…
At our April meeting we heard reports of the many faithful ministries our
church is doing. We also heard from the Finance Commission that the
generous giving of the congregation is not keeping up with the needs of our
budget. While there are reserves to cover the shortfall, the Finance
Commission reminded us that for the past three years we have ended the
year with expenditures higher than our income. This is now the fourth year of
the trend. As with our personal finances, we know that if this trend continues, the day will come when
there are no more reserves. So, we are talking now about the possibility of needing to cut or reduce
budget line items. The congregation can keep track of our giving each Sunday in the bulletin. If you
have any questions or suggestions, please let the board know. -Danny Rumpf, Chair
CHANGE OF COORDINATORS

Robert Lee Grossnickle (BDM Coordinator), Sara Wolfe (Crop Walk
Coordinator) and Tina Spade (Giving Tree Coordinator) will be handing over the reins of their
individual ministries. Many thanks to you all! We welcome new Commission Coordinators:

DISASTER RESPONSE TRIP UPDATE
Currently for the Brethren Disaster Ministry trip Grossnickle Church is scheduled to go
to Detroit, Michigan from September 25 - October 1. In August of 2014, major flooding
occurred in southeastern Michigan when up to 6 inches of rain fell in 12 hours. The
event produced record one-day rainfall totals, damaging more than 129,000 homes
throughout the greater Detroit area and was declared by FEMA as the worst disaster
of 2014. I am currently seeking volunteers to assist in the project. The work includes
drywall repair, painting and basement finishing. There is room for 15 people and an
assistant cook. If interested please contact Danny Rumpf at 301.432.4723 or
[email protected]

OUTREACH SUMMER PROJECT
Summer is almost upon us. A time we think of sun, sand and sports. For
others in the world it can be a time of storms, squalls, and struggle. To assist
those in need we will be collecting hygiene kits to be distributed by CWS.
Each kit should be placed in a one-gallon size plastic bag with zip closure and
should include:
One hand towel ▪ One washcloth
One wide tooth comb (removed from pkg)
One fingernail or toenail clipper (removed from pkg)
One bath size bar of soap (in wrapper)
One toothbrush (in pkg)
10 regular bandaids
Donations can be dropped off in the narthex between June 1 and September 1. Please include a $2
processing fee for each kit.
MORE OUTREACH EFFORTS
CENTENNIAL MEAL FOLLOW-UP… On April 30, 2016 a group of volunteers prepared
a hot meal and another group traveled to Centennial United Methodist Church to
serve the meal to a group of less fortunate and homeless friends. Randy and Kathy
Gaver, Debbie Bussard, and Brenda Thomasson prepared a delicious meal of roasted
pork, cheesy potatoes, mixed veggies, and applesauce. Then Pastors Tim and
Donna Ritchey Martin, Lois Johnson, Pam Jouannet, and Dale and Sheila Delauter
delivered and served the meal. Fewer folks than usual attended the meal, but at least
50 folks received a nutritious hot meal. God bless all who share in this ministry.
BLANKET SUNDAY UPDATE… Funds of $1,270.00 and 49 actual blankets have
been received for our annual Blanket Sunday offering! Some of the blankets (17
children's blankets) were delivered to South Mountain Health to be distributed to
families with babies and small children. The remaining blankets were taken to the
Cancer Care Center in Frederick for chemo patients to use during treatments. Your
generosity and caring has blessed many in our community and beyond.
CABIN CLEANING… Our annual cabin cleaning day at Shepherd’s Spring will be
Saturday, June 11. Additional details can be found in the Shepherd’s Spring section
of this newsletter.

“BROOKLANE: YESTERDAY AND TODAY”
Did you know that Brooklane Mental Health Services has over 450 employees? Did
you know that Brooklane has been around for 67 years? Or did you know it was
begun by Mennonites who had friends returning from World War II who suffered from
what we now call PTSD and they wanted to offer care for them.
These are some of the facts and figures we learned at a special gathering Monday
evening, May 16. R. Lynn Rushing, CEO of Brooklane gave a very informative
presentation surveying the history of Brooklane and then looking at services that are
offered today. The growth of this community resource has been remarkable. The original buildings took up a
tiny bit of the land occupied by the complex of buildings on the main campus near Leitersburg. Director of
Public Relations, Curt Miller was also present for the event offering a display of materials about Brooklane
Mental Health Services. The event was offered in recognition of May which is Mental Health month. If you
have questions or responses to the evening please speak to Pastor Tim.

‘HELPING HANDS’
VBS Craft Helpers
This segment focuses on the many groups in the life of the Church who contribute a great deal to our life
together. This space is an opportunity to learn more about these groups and a chance to see who participates
in them. This month we feature the ‘helping hands’ of our “VBS Craft Helpers.”
Vacation Bible School takes many “helping hands” to make it work. GCOB has a long Vacation Bible
School craft history. For many, many years Gene and Marilyn Gaver coordinated crafts for VBS.
Then about ten years ago, they turned the responsibility over to a dedicated team that has served
faithfully since. Jeanine Harshman, Randy and Kathy Gaver and Suzanne Levitt work gracefully and
creatively to have interesting and worthwhile craft projects for all age groups at VBS. This writer is
amazed at how many homes have a “Fruit of the Spirit” wall hanging in them, if not several. The
wooden hearts painted in attractive bright colors joined together make a beautiful reminder of the
signs of the Spirit in our lives. Or a match stick cross. Or a bird house. And now each year there are
new imaginative projects added to these long time favorites. VBS kids learn skills in the process of
making these items and they have beautiful creations to remind them of their VBS experience. How
grateful we are to this dedicated team of folks who give so faithfully of themselves each year by being
“helping hands” at Vacation Bible School!
CELEBRATION CORNER
Celebration Corner is a monthly column highlighting, with joy,
events of the past month. This month we celebrate May events.
“We were glad to share not only God’s good news with you but also our very lives because we cared
for you so much.” 1 Thessalonians 2:8
There is a long tradition at GCOB of sharing life markers with others during the month of May. We
share with mothers a Mother’s Day tradition of giving blankets to share security and warmth and
comfort with those in distress. We share a Sunday to mark Children’s Day and we invite the children
of the Sunday School to lead us in worship by singing and by having Kids’ Klub Leader Lois Ann
Glessner bring the morning message. We share on Memorial Sunday with those who lost a loved
one over the last year by remembering those who have died within our Church, in our Church families
and in our community. And we share with those graduating from High School, College and Graduate
School on Graduate Sunday.
We pray that as we share in these varied ways, each of you who are highlighted on these Sundays
will feel the love and care of your Church family and more importantly the love of our God. Because
we do as the Thessalonians verse says, “…care for you so very much.” That’s why we take time,
plan the services, buy the gifts, give the blankets, and ask you to put on your caps and gowns.
Because we share life together and because we “care for you so very much.”
There was much to celebrate as we walked through these Sundays in May. How blessed we are!
How loved we are! But we do not only care so much for each other. We also turn outward and offer
that same love and care to the world. And so during May we also gathered to focus on Sisters and
Brothers in Northwest Zambia through “Field of Hope” Growing Project’s “Blessing of the Seed”
service. Also we gathered to highlight “Mental Health Month,” by hearing about Brooklane Mental
Health services past and present. And we also extended our care to the creation God has given us
by recycling used and discarded electronics.
CELEBRATE the many ways GCOB cares! TELL THE STORY of your Church! INVITE SOMEONE
to come join in!

Notes of Thanks…
THANKS to a willing, dedicated “Adopt-A-Road” crew who picked up litter on Saturday,
May 7, a soggy Saturday morning. Thanks to Dan and Pepper Delauter, Keith and Emily
Delauter, Christy Kehlbeck, Donnie Pugh, and Jon Martin. The job was done in just over
an hour. Thank you! Thank you!
THANK YOU… I just want to thank everyone for the many, many cards, flowers and well
wishes when I had unexpected surgery April 17. I thank Pastors Tim and Donna for their visits and prayers. I also
want to thank my family and friends for all the good food that was brought to us. Everything was delicious. My
caregiver was so helpful to me. I thank God for all the healing that’s taking place in my body. I’m just so happy
to be here. May God Bless you all. Love, Betty Grossnickle
THANK YOU FOR THE BLANKETS! I just wanted to let you know I recently contacted the Cancer Care Center on
Thomas Johnson Drive to see if they could use our beautiful blankets. I was informed that they do have a need
for them. So, today [May 17] I delivered them! The nurses were very grateful and expressed they would be sure
to provide them to the patients. I took them to the chemo room where I saw many folks getting treatments. As I
left I felt certain that the donation was in the perfect place. I am sure that they will provide warmth and comfort
to those who are most likely in their darkest moment. –Angi Cornell, GCOB Blanket Sunday Coordinator
THANK YOU… The Mid-Atlantic District would like to thank you for your congregation’s support of this year’s
meat canning program. Your congregation’s support of the program will help supply many local area food
banks. This year a portion of the canned meat will be sent to Haiti and Honduras to aide them in a great time of
need. –Gene Hagenberger, District Executive Minister (April 14, 2016)
WITH APPRECIATION… We are blessed with friends like you who support the work of the Religious Coalition.
Thank you for your generous gift of $275.00. You and your gift play a vital role in our efforts to provide yearround emergency shelter to homeless individuals at the Alan P. Linton, Jr. Emergency Shelter or to homeless
families with children in the Emergency Family Shelter… The goal of the Religious Coalition is to provide essential
human services to those most in need in our community. Your gift makes all of this possible. We appreciate
your commitment to our mission to help our neighbors in need – we couldn’t do it without you! Sincerely, Rev.
Brian Scott, Executive Director (March 7, 2016)
THANK YOU for your generosity and gift to Heifer International. The end of extreme poverty is within our grasp, and
your help matters. Your commitment to helping others gives hope to families who once struggled with hunger and
poverty and provides the foundation for strong farming families. Thank you for investing in Heifer International to
help make a better world – one family at a time. –Pierre U. Ferrari, President and CEO (February 19, 2016)
