SUMMERFEST 2012
June 14 to July 3
www.musicinthemountains.org
Two weeks, ten concerts,
hundreds of musicians,
and some people who can really fly.
You can always count on SummerFest to be the musical event of the season.
But this year we’re taking it to a whole new level.
We’ve created nearly a dozen programs featuring some of the greatest music of
all time–from classical to classic rock. Performed by some of the most amazing
talent you’ll ever see on a stage. Or above it.
It’s two weeks of wonderful music, fun events and a great time with friends and
family. So check out the schedule, order your tickets and be a part of the best
SummerFest ever.
Tuesday, June 12 – 7:30 pm
and Saturday, June 16 – 7:30 pm
YOUNG COMPOSERS CONCERT
Introducing over 23 new works by some
of the most talented young people
you will ever meet. Composer/instructor
Mark Vance and his students have been
working hard all year to create some
truly exceptional music. Now it’s time
for them to present it to you– played
by world-class professional musicians.
There are so many exciting new pieces,
we had to add a second performance.
This is always one of the most popular
SummerFest events, so get your tickets
early.
The Young Composers Project is sponsored
by a generous grant from the Clarence E.
Heller Foundation and the California Arts
Council.

PARTY WITH THE STARRS
THE VERDI REQUIEM
Join us as the MIM Alliance kicks off
SummerFest with a fabulous evening
of great food, terrific wines, live auctions, and, of course, music. And not
just any music, mind you. You’ll have a
ball with the Dean-O-Holics–featuring
Frank, Dean and the rest of the Pack.
Best of all, it happens at the beautiful
vineyards of the Sierra Starr Winery.
Proceeds from this event help fund
MIM music and education programs
that happen all year long.
The amazing MIM Chorale sings Verdi’s
towering masterpiece. It’s certainly
one of the most beautiful and exciting
choral pieces ever written. It combines
the drama of an opera, the complexity of
a symphony and the emotional impact of
a big choral work. We’ve also recruited
four brilliant soloists to add some serious
vocal horsepower to this performance.
We get goose bumps just thinking
about it.

Faire 12:00 pm to 3:00 pm
MIM FAMILY MUSIC FAIRE
This is simply the most entertaining and
fun way to introduce your kids to the joy
of classical music. It starts in the morning
with a performance of Prokofiev’s Peter
and the Wolf, a musical story played
out by the different instruments in the
orchestra and some local actors. Then
the faire begins with a free (that’s right,
free) lunch and lots of activity booths
where your kids can meet the characters
from the concert, talk to our musicians
about their instruments, and pick them
up and play with them. It’s a little like an
instrument petting zoo. And it’s a great
way for your family to get to know ours.

THE MACHINE PLAYS PINK FLOYD
with The MIM Festival Orchestra and The Interstellar Light Show
Music in the Mountains and the Center for the Arts have teamed up to bring you
the top Pink Floyd show in this or any other galaxy. Close your eyes and you’ll
swear it’s 1973, and Roger and the boys are right in front of you playing Dark Side
of the Moon. On second thought, don’t close your eyes. You’ll miss the most
insane laser light show ever seen around here. There’s also a pretty amazing
backup band–no less than Maestro Gregory Vajda and the MIM Festival Orchestra. Even if you’re a hardcore Floyd fan, this show will blow you away. So get your
tickets early.

BEETHOVEN’S THIRD SYMPHONY
(EROICA)
WET INK
CIRQUE DE LA SYMPHONIE
OK, so maybe your father introduced
you to new music that was maybe a little
dull, maybe a little strange. Well, this
isn’t your father’s new music. Wet Ink
is all about making new music fun and
exciting.
The hit of last year’s MIM season is
back. And they’re bigger and better
than ever. With some brand new acts.
Find out what happens when our orchestra
teams up with an amazing troupe of acrobats,
aerialists and clowns. It’s more than a fusion
of two great art forms. It’s a magical
evening of spectacular feats performed
to the music of Dvorak, Bizet, Tchaikovsky
and other greats. It’s also a thrilling picnic
under the stars for you and your family.
Ludwig’s back in town, along with the
MIM Festival Orchestra, to bring you
one of the truly great pieces of classical music. Don’t miss this chance to
hear Maestro Vajda, the orchestra and
our Principal Players shine on one of
Beethoven’s favorite pieces (ours and
his). Leading up to this main event
are some other classics we know you’ll
love, including:
Felix Mendelssohn, Konzertstuck for
Clarinet and Basset-horn No. 1
Johann Nepomuk Hummel, Introduction,
Theme and Variations for Oboe
Roberrt Schumann, Konzertstuck for
Four Horns and Orchestra
And here’s an exciting little secret
we’ve been keeping, until now: after
the performance, Maestro Vajda and
members of the orchestra will head up
to the Old 5 Mile House for appetizers, no-host drinks and some great
conversation about music. No tickets
required, but RSVP would be nice–

Maestro Vajda, the MIM Orchestra and
the Nevada County Composers Cooperative team up to present some
fabulous new music, plus some great
classics. (So maybe we should call it
Wet/Dry Ink.) Five brand new works
will premiere, including Mark Vance’s
violin concerto, played by the brilliant
Caitlin Kelly, from USC.
Ever wonder what goes through a composer’s mind when he’s writing a piece
of music? Or what it’s like to conduct an
orchestra or play a certain instrument?
Here’s your chance to find out.
The new works are:
Mark Vance’s Violin Concerto
Randy McKean’s Orchestrium
Howard Hersh’s Gardenias
Jerry Grant’s The Road Less Traveled
and Variations on a Soundbite Society

TCHAIKOVSKY PIANO CONCERTO
NO. 1 & DVORAK SYMPHONY NO. 9
THE AMADINDA PERCUSSION GROUP–
RHYTHMS OF THE WORLD
Maestro Vajda and the MIM Festival
Orchestra bring you one of the most
beautiful and exciting pieces ever
written–Tchaikovsky’s awesome
piano concerto. And, to make sure
we found a pianist to do it justice,
we went all the way to New York.
We think you’ll be blown away by
the sheer talent and virtuosity of the
fabulous Xiayin Wang.
Amadinda is one of the most original
and versatile percussion groups on the
planet. They play an amazing synthesis
of world rhythms and modern music–
from classics by Gershwin, Mussorgsky,
Debussy and others–to works from
contemporary Hungarian composers,
as well as their own compositions. Their
instruments are as interesting and eclectic as their music–from polynesian log
drums to Chinese gongs, tin cans, bicycle
wheels and frying pans (really).
This is one concert we’re sure you’ll get
a bang out of.
On the same program is Dvorak’s
gorgeous Symphony No. 9, From the
New World and Dimitri Kabalevsky’s
The Comedians. What a great way to
spend a summer Sunday afternoon.
