Hatutus PhD award: Dr. Antti Airola
The Best Finnish PhD Thesis in the Field of Pattern Recognition in 2010–2011 Award was presented at the Federated
Computer Science Event 2012 to Dr. Antti Airola from the
University of Turku. The topic of his thesis was “KernelBased Ranking. Methods for Learning and Performance Estimation”.

The Federated Computer Science Event 2012
The Federated Computer Science Event (Yhdistetyt tietojenkäsittelyn päivät) was a two-day conference that combined the traditional annual events of three societies in Finland: The Finnish Society for Computer Science, the Pattern
Recognition Society of Finland, and the Finnish Artificial
Intelligence Society. The event was held on May 28–29,
2012 at the Kumpula campus of the University of Helsinki
(UH), and it was organized by the Department of Computer
Science of UH.
Hatutus PhD Award Winner 2010–2011, Dr. Antti Airola
The contributions of the thesis are as follows. First, the development of RankRLS, a computationally efficient kernel
method for learning to rank, based on minimizing a regularized pairwise least-squares loss. Second, improvements
on the fastest known training method for the linear version of the RankSVM algorithm. Third, a study of combinations of the empirical kernel map and reduced set approximation, which allows the large-scale training of kernel
machines using linear solvers, and proposal of computationally efficient solutions to cross-validation when using the
approach. Next, the exploration of the problem of reliable
cross-validation when using AUC as a performance criterion, through an extensive simulation study. Finally, a case
study on applying machine learning to information extraction from biomedical literature.
The award winner was selected by an independent award
committee consisting of senior Finnish researchers in the
field. Congratulations again to Antti, and apologies for
paying the award money so late! It turned out that getting
access to the Hatutus account was a non-trivial task.

The program of the event consisted of keynotes by Heikki Mannila and Jorma Rissanen, talks by PhD award winners (including Antti Airola), MSc thesis award winners,
and talks and posters by authors via an open call for papers. The papers presented at the conference were printed in very prominent proceedings, which can be found at

The Hatutus Fall Seminar 2011
The Hatutus Fall Seminar 2011 was organized at the Aalto University Otaniemi Campus on December 1, 2011.
The program of the seminar consisted of two invited talks:
“Machine vision research” by Matti Pietikäinen and “Learning Graded Relations with Kernel Methods” by Tapio Pahikkala from the University of Turku.
In addition, four researchers from Aalto ICS Department
gave short talks on recent research topics: “Personalized
voice models” (Mikko Kurimo), “Cognitive systems research” (Timo Honkela), “Restricted Boltzmann machines” (KyungHyun Cho), and “Multimodal video and audio
analysis” (Mats Sjöberg).
After the seminar, the program continued with general meeting and dinner & sauna at the Aalto Donors’ Lounge, where the general co-chairs of SCIA 2013 (Erkki Oja and Matti
Pietikäinen) started the planning for the upcoming conference. The planning was effective and lots of decisions were made. Unfortunately, the main notes were subsequently
lost, so the SCIA preparations were started based on what
Erkki had scribbled on the margins of his calendar.

IAPR award, in 2012 is Professor Rama Chellappa, University of Maryland, USA. The citation for the prize is: “For
pioneering contributions to statistical methods for image

The recipient of the J. K. Aggarwal Prize in 2012 is Professor René Vidal, Johns Hopkins University, USA, “For
outstanding contributions to the generalized principal component analysis (GPCA) and subspace clustering in computer vision and pattern recognition.” Both prizes are to be
awarded at the ICPR 2012.

SCIA 2013 will be held in Espoo, Finland at the Hanasaari
Swedish-Finnish Cultural Centre on June 17–20, 2013. It is
a major event and the main task for the society during the
next year.
