CELEBRIGHT THE SEASON
The 15th Annual Milwaukee Holiday Lights Festival shined
a whole new light on winter fun. For six weeks, the season’s best
events, shows, restaurants, shopping and decorations could all be
found in the heart of the city.
•
While Milwaukee Downtown provided the picturesque
backdrop, the organization also ensured connectivity to everything
happening to make downtown a premier holiday destination.
CELEBRIGHT THE SEASON
MILWAUKEE HOLIDAY LIGHTS FESTIVAL
KICK-OFF EXTRAVAGANZA
The Milwaukee Holiday Lights Festival pulled out all the stops for its
15th annual Kick-Off Extravaganza on Thursday, November 21.
Music, dancing, ice carving, Santa, new animated light displays
and thrilling fireworks – downtown never beamed so brightly, nor
so gleefully as 6,000+ guests packed the park.
Among the highlights were ice
sculpting by Ice Beat Factory; live music
by Spider George & The Web and The
Tempters; skits by The Rep and First
Stage; and dancing by Danceworks
Youth Performance Company and
Studio VIA.
Media personalities Kidd &
Elizabeth from 99.1 The Mix, and
Patrick Paolantonio and Marianne Lyles
from WISN 12 were also there, along
with Mayor Tom Barrett, County Parks
Director John Dargle and Alderman
Bob Bauman – even Santa joined the
party!
Best of all, the entire evening was free
– right down to the cocoa and cookies
sponsored by Cousins Subs on Old
World Third St., and Jingle Bus rides
presented by T-Mobile Operated by
Wireless Vision LLC. After the
show, 702 guests jumped on the Jingle
Bus to see all of the sights.
CELEBRIGHT THE SEASON
MILWAUKEE HOLIDAY LIGHTS FESTIVAL
BRIGHTENS DOWNTOWN STREETS & PARKS
The Milwaukee Holiday Lights Festival is the city’s largest display
of holiday cheer. While chandeliers and harp lamp decor lined
Wisconsin Avenue, a half million lights and dozens of animated
sculptures brightened three parks.
Themes at Pere Marquette Park and Zeidler Union Square
change annually, but Cathedral Square Park maintains its local appeal
with “Community Spirit Park.”
Cathedral Square Park – “Community Spirit Park”
Presented by Columbia St. Mary’s, Madison Medical Affiliates and Milwaukee County Parks
This reoccurring tradition invited 60 schools and 2,263 students to add festive cheer.
Every newly raised evergreen represented a class theme with handmade ornaments by
students.
After decorating their school’s tree, students were treated to cocoa and cookies
compliments of Madison Medical Affiliates. During the decorating parties, nonperishable
goods were also collected for Feeding America Eastern Wisconsin and 99.1 The Mix’s
Stuff the Bus initiative. More than 600 lbs. of food were collected.
_______________________________________________________________________
Pere Marquette Park – “Electric Elves”
Presented by Zilber Property Group and Milwaukee County Parks
Charged up for the season, electric elves were shown completing those last-minute
tasks. From decorating trees and shopping for gifts to shipping out goodies by plane and
train, it was a final push to get Santa ready for the busiest night of the year.
_______________________________________________________________________
Zeidler Union Square – “Musical Bears”
Presented by We Energies and Milwaukee County Parks
Animated bear sculptures banded together in this rockin’ scene playing a keyboard,
horn, guitar, drums and an accordion. Among the revelry, guests could find the everpopular Giant Red Teddy.
CELEBRIGHT THE SEASON
MILWAUKEE HOLIDAY LIGHTS FESTIVAL
JINGLE BUS
Presented by T-Mobile Operated by Wireless Vision LLC
Narrated by Milwaukee Downtown’s Public Service Ambassadors, this
40-minute tour acquainted riders with downtown landmarks and the most
decorated scenes. Even better, rides were just $1 per person!
The 2014 service was again a
resounding hit, accommodating 7,449
passengers. Despite a shorter season
and several days of canceled service due
to inclement weather, approximately
118 guests rode the Jingle Bus each
hour.
Passengers boarded at the Warming
House at The Shops of Grand Avenue’s
Center Court, where awaiting riders
enjoyed an 18-piece animatronic
symphony orchestra of bears, holiday
shops, and free cookies and hot cocoa
compliments of Wild Flour Bakery.
Kids also received a holiday coloring
book.
CELEBRIGHT THE SEASON
MILWAUKEE HOLIDAY LIGHTS FESTIVAL
COCOA WITH THE CLAUSES
Presented by Madison Medical Affiliates
If believers preferred to hand-deliver their wish lists, the Fest had them covered there
too. On Saturday, December 14, the Milwaukee Holiday Lights Festival flew Santa,
Mrs. Claus and all their helpers to Cathedral Square for Cocoa with the Clauses.
During their visit, approximately 300 families dropped in. Kids shared their wish lists,
moms and dads snapped a free photo, and as the name suggests, cocoa and cookies
were free too, thanks to the Fest’s sponsor, Madison Medical Affiliates.
SANTA’S MAILBOX
Presented by 99.1 The Mix
Whether you were naughty or nice, Santa’s Mailbox in Cathedral Square also
topped the list of free things offered by the Fest. Presented by 99.1 The Mix, every boy
and girl who wrote Santa received a personalized letter in return.
Even with 1,658 letters to respond to, postage was not required, thanks to the
support of Milwaukee Downtown and 99.1 The Mix. To boost awareness,
The Mix also tossed in 156 on-air promos.
CELEBRIGHT THE SEASON
MILWAUKEE HOLIDAY LIGHTS FESTIVAL
HOLIDAY ORNAMENT
Each year, the Milwaukee Holiday Lights Festival preserves a piece
of downtown history by casting a signature building or icon into a pewter
ornament. The 2013 edition featured the U.S. Bank Tower. Past editions in
the series were also made available for a premium.
Online orders were accepted through milwaukeeholidaylights.com and okanjo.com.
Point of sale purchases could be done at Milwaukee Downtown, Urban Milwaukee
and Kloiber Jewelers. A total of 194 ornaments were sold through Milwaukee
Downtown.
MARKETING
The Milwaukee Holiday Lights Festival produced the following print pieces to
brand the event and recognize sponsors and community partners.
Rack Cards
A save-the-date card was produced
in September with preliminary details
of the kick-off celebration. The card
was mailed to a 10,000-person database
and inserted in the November issue of
Milwaukee Magazine, which reached
33,479 homes.
Warming House Signage
Banners and freestanding signs were
positioned throughout the The Shops of
Grand Avenue to inform guests of the
on-site Jingle Bus. T-Mobile Operated
by Wireless Vision LLC and Wildflour
Bakery were also recognized for their
contributions to the service.
Brochures
To bundle the enormous amount
of activity taking place in downtown
Milwaukee over the holiday season, the
Festival created a 44-page guide.
Covering events, dining, nightlife,
hotel accommodations and retail
destinations, the highly coveted piece
was distributed to 20,000.
Park Signage
Banners and freestanding signs were
positioned in Cathedral Square Park,
Pere Marquette Park and Zeidler Union
Square for the duration of the season to
acknowledge sponsors and community
partners.
Jingle Bus Tickets
Aside from providing systematic
boarding, the Jingle Bus ticket was an
additional way to boost sponsor
awareness. T-Mobile Operated by
Wireless Vision LLC was the presenting
sponsor of the 2013 service, garnering
logo recognition on 13,000 tickets.
Perforated and numbered, the
consumer retains one part of their
ticket following their tour, making that
portion an ideal space for a coupon.
Cocoa with the Clauses Menus
Restaurants neighboring Cathedral
Square Park offered kid-friendly
menus at discounted prices to lure
in families attending Cocoa with the
Clauses. Menus were mixed into one
flyer, which was distributed by
Milwaukee Downtown’s Public Service
Ambassadors. 200 menus were printed,
allowing additional recognition for
the sponsor of Cocoa with the Clauses,
Madison Medical Affiliates.
