GARLIC AND HEALTH PROJECT
1 Leafy Vegetables germplasm: stimulating use Contract number: AGRI-2006-0262 Agreement number: 001 AGRI GENRES 870/2004 E-mail report December 2009 – May 2010 (E-report 09) Cesena 2009 2 General information 1. 2. 3. 4. The technical and financial reports of the third year have been submitted to the Commission by March. We received comments on the technical report in April and have submitted our reply to the Commission by early May. Hopefully the Commission will accept the technical report soon, as after the acceptance of this report the evaluation of the financial report will start. The annual project meeting in November 2009 was hosted by UNIBO (Cesena, Italy). We would like to thank Filippo D’Antuono and his students very much for their kind hospitality in making this meeting to a success. In June the annual WP coordinator meeting is planned at ProspecieRara (Aarau, Switzerland). As a coordinator I would like to stress again that when you are disseminate material (scientific, professional, web publications, articles in newpapers etc) you need to acknowledge the EU-GENRES programme in this article via the following wording (see also FAQ 11); "Action AGRI-2006-0262, Leafy Vegetables – stimulating use, receives financial support from the European Commission, Directorate-General for Agriculture and Rural Development, under Council Regulation (EC) No 870/2004". 3 List of milestones & deliverables (only to be updated by the WP leaders) Overview of Workpackage 1: Documentation General objectives: Development of crop databases for spinach, Cichorium and minor leafy vegetables and updating the existing International Lactuca database. Prioritize accessions for regeneration, characterization and evaluation. If necessary, special selections or core collections will be made for the evaluations of the different crops with the help of these databases. What has been done: Extension and updating of the databases. Including new project data in the databases. New functionalities for easier access to project data have been included in the databases. Gap analysis for lettuce and spinach was carried out. 2. What will be done: Continuation of including characterization and evaluation data in the databases. Preparation of a draft paper about the new databases and gap analysis in cooperation with GEVES and IPK. 3. Bottlenecks: None. Workpackage 2: Regeneration and characterization General objectives: To regenerate and characterize parts of partner’s genebank collections, for improving conservation and utilization. High priority will be given to material to be used in the evaluations, because the total numbers of accessions included in all collections needing regeneration and characterization are far too high to be handled in the framework of this project. What has been done: Reception of the chicory multiplications conducted in 2009 from the breeders network. About regeneration, 12 accessions regenerated in 2009 have been sown in March 2010 in order to verify their identity in comparison with the remaining seeds of their parent seeds. In the same time, in order to continue the characterisation work, 61 accessions of chicories have been sown for the remaining characters (bolting descriptors) : among those 61 accessions, 23 accessions have been partially characterised in 2009 within an autumn trial (except bolting descriptors) and the 38 remaining accessions have been already sown in 2009 in spring trial but it was not possible to have the bolting descriptors due to a lack of low temperatures during spring 2009. In parallel, seeds of 30 accessions have been sent to the breeders network for regeneration in January 2010. 2. What will be done : characterisation of the 61 accessions (see above) for bolting descriptors in a spring trial sown in March 2010. Receiving the seeds regenerated of chicory in 2009. Sending 1 variety of corn salad to one breeder for regeneration. 3. The work has to be finalised after the project in the framework of the ECP/GR working group on leafy vegetables. 27 Activities 1. What has been done: Request for partners and international passport data of minor leafy vegetables is finished. 56 gene banks were contacted worldwide. Data have been only received from Italy, Romania, Greece, Poland, Sweden and USA. International passport data collected: 88 accessions of Rheum, 229 accessions of Asparagus, 3 accessions of Valerianella, 257 accessions of Eruca, 30 accessions of Diplotaxis and 40 accessions of Cynara. In total 2154 accessions of minor leafy vegetables have been collected. Harmonization of the received passport data in respect of content and form is finished. All collected passport data are available at the leafy vegetables website. Start identifying gaps in the collections of the minor crops. Analyses were started for minor leafy vegetables, and preliminary results for Asparagus were presented during the annual meeting in Cesena. Because of insufficient available information about gene pool structures and distribution areas for the majority of the minor leafy vegetables, it was decided to limit the gap analysis for minor leafy vegetables to rocket salad (Eruca and Diplotaxis). Gap analysis started for the Eruca and Diplotaxis collection. 686 Eruca accessions, 148 Erucastrum accessions and 380 Diplotaxis accessions are in the database. Analysis started with the description of the gene pool (primary, secondary, tertiary gene pool). 2. What will be done: Identifying gaps in the Eruca and Diplotaxis collections is ongoing. For this purpose suitable literature will be examined to identify to which gene pool the species belonging to and where are their distribution areas. Analysing Eruca and Diplotaxis accessions in the database recording to their origin (areas/countries) and type of material (cultivated, breeding material, landraces, wild). Comparison of the results obtained from literature and analysis of the database. Results will be shown during the next meeting in June.
