CHIP WEEK 2015
IS FAST APPROACHING...
Act Now!
With Chip Week 2015 just around the corner,
now is the time for chip shops to prepare for one
of the biggest events in the chipping calendar!
The annual celebration returns for its 24th year,
between 16th and 22nd February, and chip
shops are being urged to make the most of this
fantastic opportunity. With free promotional
material available to all registered shops, it’s time
to put up the posters, hang out the bunting and
start shouting about your exciting events and
promotions taking place during this year’s
Chip Week!
Potato Council marketing manager, Kate Cox, said:
“This high profile campaign is a great platform for all
businesses to celebrate the mighty chip. What’s more,
Chip Week offers a real opportunity for shops to boost
trade; however they must act fast in order to maximise
the many benefits the campaign offers. As Chip Week
edges closer, it’s time to start shouting about your plans
to drum up as much interest as possible. Using the
newly designed point-of-sale material will help attract
customers and encourage passing trade to celebrate the
Week. Likewise, offering promotional deals such as buy
one get one free (BOGOF) on a large portion of chips or
holding a Chip Week charity day will act as great drivers
for business.”
Targeting customers with special offers e.g. ‘Half price
fish & chip meals for pensioners’ will also help entice
people in. In addition, charitable promotions, such as
pledging to make a donation for every bag of chips sold
during Chip Week, can encourage customers to buy an
extra portion of chips and build longer-term loyalty. The
countdown to the Choice Chip Awards is also quickly
approaching. Voting ends Saturday 7th February 2015
and all voting cards need to be with us by Tuesday 10th
February; otherwise you may lose valuable votes!

This time
short, sweet and to the point?
(I hope?).
We have had two great
testimonials sent in recently
paying homage to the great
piece of kit that is the
Hawkins Big Boy
so I will let our customers
do the talking this time.

After reading Tony’s Talk in the last issue of VAW NEWS
I had decided to try the BIG BOY PRESSURE COOKER for
doing our peas. Last year we purchased a new stove for
the shop with 5.5kw burners for quicker cooking. Needless
to say that even without gas price increases the Gas Bills
have gone through the roof, the peas still needed careful
cooking for around 40-50 minutes in a 7.5 ltr aluminium
pan ¾ filled with peas covered with an inch of water
(same as I have done for the last 29 years).
I am delighted to say I have purchased two 10ltr Big Boys,
everything I do remains the same apart from the cooking
time. 10 mins in the morning then rested for approx. 30
mins before opening and I have consistently perfect peas.
I will over the course of the next few weeks or months be
purchasing two more Big Boy pans to replace my older
pans. I would like to thank you for the article as I know
these pans will pay for themselves as we will be saving a
fortune on our gas bills.
