Nick Carlson
Hamilton
Kevin Arnold
It is a privilege to have a young man like Nick Carlson on the Hamilton Varsity
Golf Team. Nick is highly motivated to be a good person, good student, and
good player. After Nick learned of the tragedy of the Grayling Golf Team he
was the 1st on our team to put on the green ribbon and dedicated his season to the
Grayling team and those lost on that tragic day. He is a mentor and leader for
Hamilton Golf Team and his teammates learn from his example. Nick’s teachers
are impressed with his hard work in the classroom and he is currently carrying a
very impressive GPA. He is learning to balance his time on the range and time
hitting the books. Nick’s season was another successful one. It is difficult to
match the season he had in 2012, but he did his best to top it. Nick was medalist
at two invitationals, conference, district, regional, and runner up at Division II
State Finals played at the Meadows @ GVSU. The highlight of his season was
his victory at the Hamilton Invitational. Nick’s incredible 10 under par 62 earned
him a 13 shot victory. It was a day we will not soon forget at Hamilton!
12
Reed Hyrnewich
Mona Shores
Scott Volkman
Reed was medalist in 8 tournaments, 2 of 3 jamborees, and only finished outside
of the top 10 once. His scoring average for 18 holes was 72.2 and his 9 hole
average was 35. He has been a 3-time All-State Super Team member, named 4time All-Conference and 4-time All-Area. He was the medalist in the Conference
this year and at the Districts fired a three under par 69 in brutal conditions at the
Muskegon Country Club. He finished 4th in the Regional and just outside of the
top 10 at MHSAA State Finals. He played a very tough and demanding schedule
on courses like Oakland Hills, Forest Akers West, Muskegon Country Club and,
the Meadows. It is remarkable that Reed posted such a great scoring average for
his season. Coach Volkman states “one tournament does not make a golfer but
Reed’s consistency throughout the year shows true success”. With Reed’s tireless
work ethic his performance on the golf course and his dedication in the
classroom it is no wonder Reed will be attending the University of Michigan in
the fall of 2013 and will be a member of the Wolverine Golf Team.

Alex Kleckner
Lakeland
Hugh Felt
Alex has lettered all three years on the Lakeland Varsity team. This season Alex
helped lead the Eagles to an undefeated 10-0 league record, 29-1 over his three
season career. He has been an All-Conference selection every year. This season
was a special one for Alex. He led his team with a 74.2 tournament avg. helping
Lakeland make it back to the MHSAA State Finals for the first time in 17 years.
His run during the play-offs was impressive carding 4 over par total for the four
rounds. He closed with a 69 on the second day of State Finals and this put him in
a tie for medalist. A big part of his success is his tireless work ethic. Alex will
practice on his own putting in large numbers of hours each week. One would
think that with his devotion to practice time his academics would take a back
seat, but that is not the case as he carries a very impressive GPA and ACT score.
12
Landon Osborne
Battle Creek Lakeview
Tony Evans
Landon finished his senior season and career at Lakeview with outstanding play.
He was named First Team All-Conference for the third straight season. Landon
earned ten top 10 finishes this season. His low score of 67 earned him medalist
honors at the Lakeview Invitational. Landon saved his best for last when he
carded rounds of 73 at the Districts, 73 at Regionals, 75 on day one and another
73 on day two of the MHSAA Division I State Finals. The two day total of 148
placed Landon 4th this season earning him his second Division I State Finals top
10 finish. Landon’s leadership both on and off the course were invaluable to the
success of the Spartan golf team this season. His play and that leadership helped
the team capture the 2013 Division I State Title played at Forest Akers West on
the MSU Campus. Landon is also an exceptional student, as he graduated with
all A’s except for one B+. Landon will continue his academic career at Ashford
University in Iowa and will be a member of the St. Bernard Golf Team.

Kyle Rodes
Plymouth
Nick Brandon
Kyle is not just the best player in the history of Plymouth High School golf, he is
easily one of the best players in the state of Michigan. His senior year confirmed
both of those ideas. Kyle finished the season with a 71.4 scoring average and a
variety of individual and team accomplishments. Kyle finished with KLAA AllConference, MHSAA All-District No. 9, and MHSAA All-Regional honors to go
with medalist honors at some of the local area's most elite high school
tournaments: Indianwood C.C. (New Course), Birmingham C.C., Forest Akers
(East Course), and Salem Hills G.C. for the KLAA Kensington Championship.
Kyle led the 2013 Plymouth Wildcats to the KLAA South Division
Championship (and a 10-0 record), the KLAA Kensington Conference
Championship, the MHSAA District No. 9 Championship, and a runner-up finish
(losing by one shot to Saline) at the MHSAA Grosse Ile Regionals played at
West Shore C.C. Kyle finished his senior year by earning individual State
Champion (in a three-hole playoff) with a two-day total of 143 at Forest Akers
West as Plymouth finished in second place overall. His uncompromising work
ethic and strong leadership skills have also led Kyle to a golf scholarship at
Eastern Michigan University, where he will be enrolling in fall, 2013.
11
Alexander (AJ) Varekois
Rockford
James Earl Cullum
AJ carded the very best season by an individual at Rockford High School under
Coach Cullum’s leadership. He posted six tournament victories, two seconds
place finishes and three third place finishes. In conference 9-hole play he was the
medalist in 5 of 7 matches. AJ was the OK Red Conference Champion with the
lowest scoring average by over a full shot. He won the post season tournament
and placed second in the other. AJ won the Division I Regional tournament by 3
shots with a 5 under par 67 to send his team to the State Finals for the first time
in 10 years. He finished third at the MHSAA Division I State Finals with a two
day total of three over par (73/74) 147. His season scoring average was 72.8. He
led his team in performance, work ethic, and attitude.
10
9
Andrew Walker
Battle Creek Lakeview
Tony Evans
Andrew had an outstanding freshman season for the Spartans. He earned AllDivision and First Team All-Conference honors. He captured the Conference
Medalist honors when he fired rounds of 69 & 74 for a two day total of 1 under
par 143. Andrew earned top 10 honors in all of his regular season events. He shot
6 under par 18 hole rounds this season setting a new school record. Andrew fired
one of his best rounds in one of the toughest fields in the state when he carded a 3
under par 67 at Oakland Hills Country Club. He led the team to their 5th straight
MHSAA District title when he earned medalist honors with an impressive two
under par 69. At the State Finals Andrew shot 77 on day 1 and 76 on day two for
a two day total of 153, gave him a top 20 finish. Andrew, although small in
stature, has a big game and plays like a seasoned veteran. He is an outstanding
student as well carrying a perfect 4.0 through his freshman year. Andrew was a
key part of the success of our team this season as he the Spartans captured the
Division I State Championship held at Forest Akers West on the MSU campus.
12
Sam Weatherhead
G.R. West Catholic
Andy Weatherhead
Sam capped an outstanding high school career by winning his second straight
Division 3 State Championship. Sam is the reigning State of Michigan Mr. Golf.
Sam won eleven of the nineteen events he was entered in. Sam is a three time
MIGCA All-State selection, four time conference player of the year, and most
importantly a top thirty grade point average of his graduating class. All of these
accomplishments are fantastic but what makes this young man even more special
is how his opponents feel about him. One young man playing in the finals said to
me “playing with Sam was the best golf experience of his life!” The burden of
expectations is a heavy burden indeed and the reason his coach is most proud and
impressed by Sam’s is his ability to handle this pressure and truly thrives on it.
Not only is Sam an amazing golfer, he is a better example to all student athletes.

2013 Girls All State Super Team
11
Elayna Bowser
Dearborn
Howard Inch
Elayna is a fantastic high school golfer who just completed a great season with a
second place finish in the Division 1 State Finals. Coach Inch said “I have never
seen anyone work so hard and improve so quickly in high school golf”. This
season Elayna rewrote the Dearborn High record book for girls’ golf. She set a
school records with her season scoring average of 37.97, another record with her
2nd place finish at the MHSAA State Finals which was the best finish for a
Dearborn player. Her score of 35 in a 9 hole match and score of 72 at a
tournament, along with 12 top ten finishes capped off her record breaking season.
Despite these amazing accomplishments, she was much more proud of her team's
feat of reaching the MHSAA State Finals for the second year in a row. Her team
also set the school records for low score in a 9-hole match posting a 165, and low
score in an 18-hole tournament of 329. Elayna is greatly valued as a golfer, but
she was much more important to her team as a captain, leader and a person.
Elayna displays life skills that her teammates can take with them into their future
after high school golf is over.
11
Cordelia Chan
Cranbrook-Kingswood
Mark Moyer
Cordelia finished a memorable junior season as regional medalist at Fieldstone
carding a 78, as well as at the Division III State Champion at Grand Valley's
Meadows Course. She was the only player with both rounds in the seventies (78
& 79) on the par 73 layout. The individual state title capped an impressive
season, as she lowered her 18-hole tournament scoring average by six strokes to
77. Other highlights included a personal-best 71 and co-medalist honor at the
Troy Invitational at Twin Lakes, as well as a 34 two under par in a dual-match at
Cracklewood Golf Course. Her League average was an outstanding 37.8, earning
her All- Catholic League honors. She was also named to the All Oakland County
Team, shooting a 78 at Pontiac Country Club. Cordelia served as a Co- Captain
for the Cranes, which finished the season with a perfect 11-0 dual match record
and a runner-up finish at the States Finals. Outside of golf, Cordelia carries an
impressive GPA and is a Section Editor of the school newspaper. She is also
active in the school’s Gold Key and Sino clubs and enjoys reading, cooking and
travel. Much of her success can be attributed to all the practice and tournament
rounds played in the spring and summer. She just has that dedication to the sport
and the hunger to never stop wanting to improve. Cordelia is already looking
forward to her senior season, with a goal of helping make her team even better.

12
Pader Her
Holt
Doug Harkema
Pader finished out her fabulous career at Holt with another record setting
season. She won six invitationals and her first was the prestigious Traverse City
Invitational. During that tournament she finished off her second round with a
back nine score of 29 on Spruce Run. She had six runner-up finishes and finished
in the top three in every regular season tournament she played. She also won the
Greenville Invitational, the Ernie Popiel Memorial and the Tullymore
Invitational. Her win at the Tullymore Invitational broke the school record when
she fired an 18 hole score of 69. She won the conference tournament shooting
another 69. She also won her third Regional title by shooting another 3 under par
69 at Stonewater Country Club. That win led Holt to its tenth consecutive trip to
the Division 1 State Finals. Pader won the individual player of the year for
Capital Area Activities Conference for the second consecutive year. That was a
tough accomplishment since some of the top players in the State compete in the
CAAC. Pader completed her four year career at Holt by finishing 6th at the
MHSAA State Finals on the tough Forest Akers West Course. Academically
Pader can be proud as she was a member of Holt High School’s four consecutive
All State Academic teams. She will attend The University of Akron on a golf
scholarship in the fall of 2014.
12
Monica Koert
NorthPointe Christian
Tom Koert
Monica is a two time All-State player and named to the Honorable Mention team
as a freshman. She led her team to a 2nd place finish at the MHSAA State Finals
and placed herself 2nd as an individual. At Regional, Monica finished in 1st
place. She placed 1st at fourteen out of seventeen events this season. In
conference play, Monica was the Conference scoring champ for the second year
in a row and conference medalist in all nine events. In tournament play, Monica
was medalist seven times. Two of her best rounds were played at Katke Golf
Course where she carded a 69, winning medalist honors and again at Yankee
Springs scoring a one under par 72 for medalist honors. Dominating most events,
Monica was under or even par, seven times. She recorded 54 birdies in this 2013
season. Monica was named Burger King Athlete of the week in recognition for
being named medalist seven times in a row in early September. She was named
to the All Area First Team by the Advance Newspaper. At the State Finals, her
75 on day 2 was key to her team earning their best ever State Finals team finish.
Monica set every scoring record at NorthPointe this season. For her career,
Monica won sixteen tournaments, and earned a top ten medal in 34 of 37
tournaments. She led NorthPointe Christian and was team medalist in 64 of 68
events in her four years run. For the 2013 season she was named the Grand
Rapids Press Player of the Year. She will be attending Ferris State University in
the fall of 2014 where she will be a member of the Bulldog Golf Team. She plans
to join the Professional Golf Management Program.

Elle Nichols
Okemos
Danial Stolz
Elle has finished her 4 year varsity career by winning her third consecutive
Division II individual State Championship after finishing fifth as a freshman.
Three consecutive titles have only been done one other time in MHSAA history.
Elle was an MIGCA Dream Team member as a sophomore and a junior. She has
won three consecutive Regional Championships and has been a First Team All
CAAC Blue member all four year of her high school career. This season, Elle
had the lowest average in the State at 73.2 and was medalist in nine events, while
never finishing lower than 2nd in any tournament. Elle set a course record of 64
at Willow Wood Golf Course breaking her own record of 65 set last year. Elle
has also made it to the Sweet 16 the last two summers in the State Amateur, and
finished in the top 10 at the GAM State Amateur the last 2 years. Elle is the two
time Lansing State Journal Player of the Year, and is also a two time Channel 6
Player of the Week. She is a National Honor Society member and has been the
leading scorer on the Girls Basketball Team. Elle is an even better person and
leader than she is a player, motivating and encouraging her teammates while
making new friends with each tournament she plays in. Elle has accepted a
scholarship to play golf at Oakland University in the fall of 2014.
12
Lily Pendy
Grosse Pointe South
Mike Rennell
Lily has been an outstanding member of the Grosse Pointe South golf team for
four years. Over Lily’s four years, the team won a state championship her
sophomore year, and has never finished higher than 4th in the state. She is a
leader, and a great player. Lily works on her game year round. Lily plays all
summer in AJGA tournaments, and in the winter her family takes vacations in the
south in order to play. Lily is tenacious with her practice. She accepts nothing
but excellence. She also continually works with the younger players to help them
improve their game.
Lily finished in the top six in each of the eight
tournaments she played in this year. Her scoring average was 75.6 for tournament
play. Lily’s average score in league play was 37.5, leading the team to an
undefeated season of 8-0. She set a school record of a one under par 71 at the
Fortress. Lily was medalist at the Region 3 tournament at Dearborn Country
Club, and Division I Individual State Champion at Forest Aker West, clearing the
field by six strokes. Her play has been outstanding all year. Perhaps Lily’s best
asset is her ability to keep her game under control. Lily keeps a great attitude on
the golf course. Her course management is excellent and her ability to get up and
down from tough situations is the key to her game. Lily has great focus on the
golf course, while maintaining a friendly attitude with her competitors. Her
etiquette on the golf course is exemplary, and she works with the younger players
to teach them how important golf etiquette is while playing. Lily is a true role
model and a leader. She will be greatly missed next year.

Jacqueline Setas
Lansing Catholic
Mary Schafer
You can always count on Jacqueline’s big personality and smile on and off the
course, as she is recognized by her peers as one of their favorite playing partners.
As the Medalist in all of the League matches she played, Jacqueline captured first
place honors at four out of six Invitationals this season. They were The Kelly
Girl's Golf Tournament at The Fortress (70), East Lansing Invitational at Walnut
Hills (73), The Charger Invitational at Flint Golf Club (75) and The Titan Invite
at Jackson Country Club (72). All were victories against the best players in the
state! As fall approached, Jacqueline's hard work and perseverance paid off. In
stellar fashion, Jacqueline went on to win Regionals (74) and a Division IV State
Title (77-73/150) to beat the entire field by 9 strokes at Bedford Valley. The
conditions were treacherous as the cold, wind and rain rolled in on the second
day of competition. However, Jacqueline's determination and ability to play well
under adversity enabled to her to shoot a 73 and capture the Division IV
Individual Title. Her second day score was the lowest of any division in the State
that day! Her 2013 Individual Title can be added to her already three consecutive
Division IV Team Championships. Jacqueline has been All League for four years
and to date she has been All Area for two years, All State for two years and a
member of the Super Team last year. She was named 2012 Lansing State Journal
Player of The Year and 2013 Lansing State Journal Co-Player of The Year. In
addition to golf, Jacqueline is a three sport athlete playing basketball and softball.
She volunteers at Haven House for at-risk families, The Bobby Crim Race,
Sparrow Miracle Network, Immaculate Heart of Mary School, member of the
2012 Chelsea Michigan Mission Trip and delivered distressed produce to local
Rescue Missions. Jacqueline also excels academically and is a member of
National Honor Society. In the fall of 2014, Jacqueline will attend and play golf
for the Spartans of Michigan State University.

Emily White
Saline
Betsy French
Emily, a member of the Saline Varsity golf team for four years began her high
school golf winning the 2010 Regional tournament and being a scoring member
of Saline's Division I 2010 State Championship team. She followed with earning
SEC All Conference honors for four years and becoming a two time All-State
player. She has had a fantastic senior season to end her high school career. Emily
was medalist in six of eight invitationals, shooting par or better in five of them,
including sub-par rounds of 71 at Milford, 67 at Holt, 74 at Grosse Ile and 71 at
Birmingham while playing against top competition. She finished in the top 4 of
every event she played in this year. During a span of 10 days Emily shot 9 under
par while playing in 8 matches/tournaments without any rounds over par. She led
the Southeastern All-Conference Team finishing as the Medalist in 9 of 10 SEC
matches and Medalist at the SEC Conference Tournament. She was the Regional
Medalist shooting 5 under par 67 at the University of Michigan G.C. At the
Division 1 State Finals at Forest Akers West G.C. Emily was in T-5th place the
first day shooting an 81 then tied for low round the 2nd day with a 76 to finish in
3rd place and earn a place on the State Final Tournament team. She averaged
74.08 on a par average of 72.08. Besides being a successful athlete Emily is an
even better person. Being on the Saline Honor Roll every trimester while taking
AP courses, she has set a great example to younger players, helping them learn to
balance athletics and academics. A senior captain, Emily is the epitome of a
Saline athlete and proudly lives the core values of team, integrity, loyalty,
responsibility, accountability and honesty. She is considerate of others, a strong
competitor who plays fair and a good sport whether she is playing well or not.
Emily plans to play Division I or II college golf and study pre-Pharmacy,
intending to eventually earn a Doctor of Pharmacy degree. With her strong work
ethic and devotion to excellence, it would not be surprising to see her succeed in
this future endeavor. Emily has been an integral part of a very successful four
years for Saline which included four trips to the State Tournament and one State
Championship. She has been a leader both on and off the course and leaves a
great legacy for the Hornets! She has recently signed her letter of intent with the
University of Michigan and will become a member of the Wolverine Golf Team.

NATIONAL COACH OF THE YEAR NOMINEE
Tony Evans
Battle Creek Lakeview
Over the past six seasons the Lakeview Spartan Golf Program has enjoyed tremendous success
on the golf course. The Lady Spartans have captured six consecutive conference championships,
five regional championships, three Division II State runner-up finishes, and placed 8th, 4th, 13th
on their other three appearances. The Spartans have captured 48 tournament championships of
the 54 played. The boys have proven to be just as successful as the Ladies. The boys have also
captured five consecutive conference championships, appeared in the MHSAA State Finals five
out of the last six seasons. They have captured five straight District titles and two Regional titles
over the past six seasons. The Spartans captured the State Title in 2008 and 2013, while finishing
as runners-up in 2012. The Spartans placed 6th in 2010 and 7th in 2011. The boys also won 56
regular season tournament championships out of the 66 events played. The Spartans have had
individual success to go along with the team effort. The Ladies have had seven First Team AllState recognition honors along with three players making the MIGCA Super Team. The boys
have also seen individual success earning thirteen first team All-State honors and seven Super
Team nominations. Two Lakeview golfers have won three individual State Titles, while one of
those golfers was named “Mr. Golf” in 2008. Four Lady Spartans have continued their golfing
career at the next level, while six boys have or are playing at the college level.

MIGCA STATE COACHES OF THE YEAR
2013 BOYS COACH OF THE YEAR
Tony Evans
Battle Creek Lakeview
The 2013 season was truly a championship year for the Lakeview Spartan golf team. The team
won six regular season tournaments. First place finishes came in following Invitationals; Gull
Lake, Forest Hills Central, Battle Creek All-City, Lakeview Invitational, Lumen Christi, and the
Ann Arbor Pioneer Invitational. The 2013 team also captured the SMAC Conference title for the
5th straight season along with their 5th straight District title as well the Regional championship.
This year’s team shattered the 18 hole school record when they fired a 2 over par 290 at the
Lakeview Invitational. The team also set a new team season scoring average this year with an
impressive 298 average, breaking the old school mark set back in 2011 at 304. The team saved
their best for last as they captured the Division I State Championship at Forest Akers East with
rounds of 299 & 302. This team knows the value of every stroke. In 2012 the Spartans lost the
state title by a single stroke and this year they found themselves tied after 36 holes of play at the
MHSAA State Finals. The Spartans captured the State title on the fifth person tie breaker,
proving that not only every stroke, but every player counts.
2013 GIRLS STATE COACH OF THE YEAR
Mary Shafer
Lansing Catholic
2013 is Mary Schafer's 6th year of coaching at Lansing Catholic. After winning three straight
Division IV State Championships, 2013 turned out to be a fun and exciting year. This years' team
consisted of six freshmen, seven sophomores, two juniors and two seniors. It was definitely a
year of learning and gaining experience for all of the golfers. This team played many tough
invitationals with the best golfers in the State of Michigan from all divisions. In the CAAC
White League tournament, they came in 2nd to a fine Lakewood team. At the Flint Powers
Invitational, they came in 3rd out of 13 teams. At The Lumen Christi Invitational, they tied for
2nd out of 16 teams. At Regionals at Bay City Country Club, they placed 2nd out of 16 teams. At
the State Finals, they placed 4th out of 15 teams with Jacqueline Setas taking first as an
individual.

2013 BOYS MIGCA DIVISION COACHES OF THE YEAR
As selected by the Michigan Interscholastic Golf Coaches Association
Division I
Mike Schultz
Traverse City West
2013 was another successful season for 3rd year head coach Mike Schultz and his Traverse City
West's boy’s golf program. This season saw the Titans successfully defend their 2012 Regional
Championship at Boulder Pointe in Lake Orion and their 3rd trip to the Division I State Finals in
four seasons. The Titans won eight of their 15 regular season events, as well as completing their
Big North Conference's season undefeated for the 1st time in school history. This year’s team
destroyed their old school scoring record of 291, by shooting 286 (par 71) at the TC West
Invitational. At Districts they finished 2nd moving them on the Regionals where they put
together rounds of golf that took them to the MHSAA State Finals. They began with a slow start
on day 1 of the State Finals, but the Titans bounced back with the lowest team score of the
weekend with 298 at Forest Acres West to vault into a 5th place overall finish. Coach Schultz
would like to thank his players for their continued dedication and hard work throughout the year,
their parents for their support of Titan golf and Mistwood Golf Course for being such gracious
and generous hosts to the Titan boys golf team this season.
Division II
Ken Bokhoven
Grand Rapids Christian
Ken has had the privilege of coaching at Grand Rapids Christian High School for the past 51
years, 30 of those years as the varsity boy’s golf coach. During most of my tenure GRCHS was
a member of the Grand Rapids City League. The Eagle golfers were always competitive in the
City League resulting in numerous conference championships. However, it was not until 2009
when G.R. Christian joined the OK White Conference that our talent level enabled the Eagles to
compete at the State level with more regularity. In 2009 the Eagles finished 4th in the State
tournament. The following year the team finished 3rd in the State. In 2011 the Eagles did not
make it to the State tournament, but in 2012 finished 8th in the State with a very young team.
With four starters returning from the previous year the 2013 Eagles captured the first State
Championship in golf in the history of the school. Throughout my years of coaching I have had
the opportunity to coach many outstanding athletes, but it is the quality of character of these
athletes that has made my coaching career so enjoyable. I have been blessed and I am looking
forward to 2014.

Division III
JT Cleveland
Alma
After barely missing the State Finals the previous season, the Alma Panthers Golf Team came
into 2013 with high expectations. With this in mind, we scheduled the toughest competition we
could find. The boys responded to every challenge. They won four tournaments and finished in
the top five in each of the rest. They also won the Tri-Valley Conference for the 3rd time in the
past four years. After finishing 2nd at Districts and Regionals, the boys posted their best two
team scores of the year at the State Finals in Bedford Valley to finish 3rd overall. This success
came from an incredible work ethic. After every practice, they would continue to work on their
putting and short game. Even after tournaments when we returned in the van, the boys would
always go out and play another round competing with and against each other in their legendary
best ball matches. We have used a simple motto the past five years: “Trust your swing, Believe
in yourself, and Play Determined”. Or as the boys would simply say, “TBD”! I would like to
thank my fellow MIGCA Coaches for this incredible honor. Furthermore, I want to thank Ernie
Silverthorn for giving me a start in coaching golf and being the best mentor ever. I would like to
thank my players for their dedication, their parents for their amazing support of Alma Golf, Pine
River Country Club for being a great host, and my wife for always believing in the Panthers.
Division IV
Steve Rider
Kalamazoo Hackett Catholic Central
After finishing “runner up” in the 2012 State Finals, Hackett returned its top four players, three
of whom are seniors this year. This season marked the 3rd State Championship for Hackett
Catholic Central in the past five years. The team finished in first place in the Greater Kalamazoo
Invitational, the Kalamazoo Country Club invitational, Districts, Regionals and State Finals.
Hackett also captured its 8th consecutive Kalamazoo Valley Association conference title going
undefeated in 2013. In the past five years, the team has only lost two conference matches. In
one KVA match this season at the Moors Golf Club in Portage, the team shot a school record
136 (8 under par). The team has also captured four regional titles in the past five years to go
along with the three State titles. Hackett had three first team All-State players in 2013. Ted
Rider won back to back Division IV medalist honors in the State Finals. While playing at the
Division IV level, the team participated in many invitationals with the top teams in Divisions I,
II, and III, often finishing in the top five. While I appreciate the Division IV “coach of the year”
recognition from my peers, I consider this award a team award. The commitment, dedication,
and hard work of the Hackett players is why the Hackett men’s golf program is where it is today.
The boys competed against some of the best competition in the state and were competitive,
despite the size of our school. All the credit goes to those players and their outstanding success
on the course. The program has had great support from the school and from parents and I am
very appreciative of that support and the resulting success.

2013 MIGCA GIRLS DIVISION COACHES OF THE YEAR
As selected by the Michigan Interscholastic Golf Coaches Association
Division I
John Getzan
Troy
John has coached golf at Troy for 27 years the last 13 as the Head Varsity Boys Coach and the
last seven as the Head Varsity Girls Coach. In 2009 John was selected as the Oakland County
Girls Coach of the Year and in 2011 he was named the Division 1 Regional Coach of the Year.
During the past 7 years the Troy Girls Golf Team has finished first in each of the Oakland
Activities Association Red, White and Blue Divisions. During the 2013 season Troy played in
nine tournaments where they had 3 first place finishes, 2 seconds, 3 thirds and 1 fourth. The team
recorded a school record 311 at the Farmington Invitational with a fifth score of 82 which was
not used in the total score. Competing in the difficult OAA Red Division, Troy compiled 5 and
1 dual record finishing second behind Division 2 State Champions - Birmingham Seaholm. For
the last half of the season Troy was ranked #1 in Division 1 for the first time in school history.
Their first place finish at the Division 1 Regional returned Troy to the State Finals where they
have participated in four of the last five years. They have improved each season with a 12th
place finish in 2009, 6th in 2010, 5th in 2011 and 3rd in 2013.This year’s team was selected to the
Academic All-State Team. One player was selected for the Academic All-State Team and one
player was selected for Honorable Mention. In addition, two sophomores were named to the All
State Honorable Mention Team. Coach Getzan has been blessed with players who excel in the
classroom as well as on the golf course. His players’ hard work in the off season and their
dedication to the sport make this award possible. John would also like to thank all our parents
whose support is greatly appreciated. Finally, John gives special thanks to Cindy, his wife of 30
years, who has been his most valuable team member throughout his coaching career.
59
Division II
Leon Braisted III
Birmingham Seaholm.
In his 16th year as the Head Girls Golf coach Birmingham Seaholm, the Maples had another
stellar year. With 35 girls in its program, Coach Braisted is truly blessed to have support from
Administrators at all level (Birmingham Public Schools), Community, Golf & Country Clubs
and most of all Parents within and outside of the program. In receiving this award, we must
mention my Co-Coach Cathie Fritz and JV coaches – 2 teams – Doug Baltz and Dan Bumpus.
Without them, this award would not possible. Birmingham Seaholm won the Prestigious OAA
Red Division with a 6-0 dual, finished 2nd at League Meet #1, but won League meet #2, to be
crown League Champions for the 2nd straight year! Seaholm won several tournaments this year
winning the Highland Shootout, Next Tee and Suntel Services Girls Golf tournaments. The
Maples captured their 11th regional in 12 years, and qualified for states for the 14th time in 16
year as coach at Seaholm. To complete their mission, Birmingham Seaholm won their 3 rd State
Championship in 2013, to go along with 4 state runner-ups. I truly feel that a coach is only as
good as his players make him. Once again, I would like to Thank my players, coaches, Parents
and my family for their continued support! I have TRULY been Bless!! I would like to Thank
the MIGCA for their ongoing support to High School Golf.
Division III
Peggy Steffan
Detroit Country Day
This was the most successful year in the history of Detroit Country Day Girls’ Golf
Program. The team began the season by winning their first two tournaments at Hudson Mills
and Huron Meadows. Country Day won four tournaments this year and finished in 2nd place in
three other tournaments. A new school record low score of 323 was obtained at the Farmington
Invitational. The most exciting victories came at the Regional and State levels. The Lady
Yellow Jackets won the Regional tournament by one stroke and went on to be victorious at the
State level in a tie-breaker. After qualifying for the state tournament for the past seven years,
this is the first State Championship for the Country Day Girls.

Division IV
Jim Bennett
Grosse Ile
Our school, Grosse Ile, has bounced between Division 3 and Division 4 since the girls’ season
moved to the fall. There are some great coaches in both divisions so it is a great honor to be
selected as the Division 4 Coach of the Year, for 2013.We have been fortunate enough to make it
to the State Finals for six of the last 7 years, winning the State Finals three times. The only year
that we did not make it to the Finals we ended up fourth on the regional, just 5 strokes out of
First Place. This year was a very special year, for me. At the beginning of the season we were
scoring in the 380’s and each week we lowered our team score as we gained more tournament
experience. By the middle of September we were in the 350’s and finished in second place at the
East Lansing Invitational, only one stroke out of first place. Our last three tournaments, before
the Regional tournament, we averaged 334 and we were playing with confidence. We didn’t
have a player that could post a low score, but we did have 5 golfers that could shoot 80, on a
good day and averaged between 85 and 91 during the season. We had to rely on our depth to
overcome the teams that had a golfer going low at each tournament. When we reached the State
Finals, we had to rely on our depth, again. Each of the top teams had an excellent #1 player and
we had to overcome the low scores they would post by using our depth. Our fifth player shot our
best round on day 2 of the Finals and we were lucky enough to win by two strokes. I have been
fortunate, as a coach, to have the support of our School Administrators, the Township’s
recreation department, and three golf courses. The school lets me make a tough schedule with a
great deal of travel, the recreation department lets us used the township driving range and ninehole course, and the two Country Clubs provide us with tee times when they are not busy. I also
have the support of the girls. They trust my guidance and drills will make them better scorers and
they never ask how long the practice will be!!
