Nature restoration: effect of soil on plant community composition and diversity
Many nature restoration projects take place on former arable fields, yet it takes many decades – or even
centuries – for a ‘target’ community to develop. Recent research has shown that soil organisms play
important roles in ecosystem functioning and affect plant diversity.
Together with Natuurmonumenten a large-scale field experiment (Reijerscamp, Wolfheze, Veluwe, NL;
(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Cu7382XGDw)) has been setup to test whether transplantation
of soil from well-developed nature areas can be used to speed up the restoration process. However,
nature development can also be limited by the lack of appropriate seed input.
As the next step we want to test whether the different transplanted soils, and their specific soil
community, select for a particular plant community when seed limitation is alleviated (by sowing). This
question will be addressed in a greenhouse experiment with both live and sterilized soil from the
Reijerscamp-experiment.
