Illumination Awards
2013
T
he IES Illumination Awards provides a unique opportunity for public recognition of professionalism, ingenuity and
originality in lighting design based upon the individual merit of each entry judged against specific criteria.
Judges are selected from a broad professional spectrum that represents knowledge of lighting and design excellence.
The judging system is based entirely on how well the lighting design does or does not meet the program criteria. Th is
program is not a competition. The program is open to any qualified entrant without limitations as to professional
affi liations. The Guth, Waterbury, Cutler, Energy and Environmental Design Award sponsored by OSRA M Sylvania
and the Control Innovation Award sponsored by the Lighting Controls Association are parallel programs created to
recognize outstanding lighting design.

Th is $820 million urban park project is comprised of two cooled conservatories
and 18 distinctively shaped vertical garden structures called “super trees.” The
super trees, now icons of Singapore’s downtown district, come alive at night with a
spectacular lighting display. The lighting scheme dramatizes shadow, eschews excess
and harmonizes with the greenery and water. Six different lighting elements have been
blended by a centralized control system using DMX to create a story using sound and
light. The super trees feature photovoltaic cells that harvest solar energy. LED strips
are integrated into the kick plate of the 128-meter long aerial walkway to illuminate
the floor without distracting from the view. In most pathway areas, lighting loads
are kept to less than 1 watt per sq meter using LEDs with wide beam optics. For the
pathway through the forest, spotlights are mounted on 10-meter poles hidden within
the trees to project light through the branches, creating a special effect without light
pollution. Powerful LED floodlights installed at the basin of the 35-meter tall waterfall
welcome visitors with a surprise. Sparkles of LED lights are placed along the water to
outline the edge with a beautiful water reflection.

Two lighting themes based on Tokyo’s aesthetic spirit “Iki”
(sophisticated and dynamic) and “Miyabi” (gracefulness) appear
alternately every night on this 634-meter tower. The lighting
design inspired by Mount Fuji minimizes power consumption by
applying the traditional Japanese elements of light and shadow.
All light sources are LEDs, which are sustainable and flexible
in movement. The lighting designers lit the northern side of the
triangle-shaped foundation in Edo purple to create the image of
a woman standing in a Kimono. The translucent water color at
the core of the tower is inspired by the Sumida River surrounding
the tower. Two rotating lights that spin around the observation
deck represent the transitional time of past, present and future.
The floodlights in the body of the tower feature white and
amber-colored LEDs, which are customizable depending on the
occasion. In the entrance area, the ceiling features a traditional
Japanese chamber, illuminated either in Iki blue or Edo purple.
On the 450-meter glass corridor, footlights create a spaceshiplike atmosphere, and shadows run every 20 seconds in the linear
light to refresh the mood. At the highest deck of the tower,
visitors can enjoy lighting shows created with the mirror walls.

The museum inhabits a former Naval Armory built under
FDR’s WPA program in 1941. Now on the National Register
of Historic Places, it sits on a dock in an area of high nightt ime

Façade lighting creates a hierarchy of elements, rhythmically
highlighting each window on the lower façade (2,700K LEDs)
and evenly washing the upper façade (3,000K metal halide).

1939 plans included sketches for “eagle lights” on walls flanking
the main entry that were never built. They were fabricated for
this project to match the original design and include internal

Opened to traffic in February 2012, the 2,618 meter-long
bridge spanning Tokyo Bay earned its nickname, “Dinosaur,”
from its unique shape. The bridge is illuminated from dusk to
midnight through a lighting design nine years in the making.
A total of 886 LED lights are installed on the bridge underspan, creating a colorful, dynamically changing design. The
interval between light fittings gradually increases toward the

ends of the bridge in harmony with its gentle arch, reducing
the number of fi xtures and lowering costs. Floodlights, 56 in
all, showcase the bridge piers. All fitt ings are unobtrusive, but
are easily accessible for maintenance. Colored LED lighting on
the bridge sides shines gently in Japanese traditional colors that
change to match the image of each month—pearl for February,
green leaves for May, the sea for July and autumn leaves for
November. For three-to-five minutes every hour on the hour,
the lighting changes to produce the image of moving waves.
Finally, to convey the symbolic importance of the project, the
LED lighting is clearly visible from land, but light dispersion is
controlled to prevent glare from interfering with air or sea traffic.

A project 10 years in the making, the elegant bridge
connects separate communities. Its long span is accentuated
by highlighting the structural rib geometry beneath the deck,
creating beautiful reflections in the water. The road/cycleway is
separated from the pedestrian walkway by a waveform art screen
made of stainless steel bars, underlit by a linear red light. Due
to the complexity of opening the bascule structure, the lighting
is provided by low-level luminaires integrated into the handrail
construction. As the bascule structure opens across the diagonal

of the bridge deck, it creates two triangulated opening leaves
which resemble the passing of two sailing vessels. When darkness
falls, an animated sequence begins: the white light of the
pedestrian walkway turns red, starting at the top of the “sail” and
rolling downwards, immersing the pedestrian deck in red light.
The vertical faces of the lift ing leaves are illuminated in white to
enhance their sail-like appearance and contrast with the deck
surface. The tip of the carbon fiber mast is capped with frosted
white LEDs, reinforcing the height of the structure.

The 121-ft clock tower is the iconic centerpiece of
UBC’s campus, overlooking the ocean, mountains and the
multicultural metropolis of Vancouver. The original design
called for continuous corner glazing to display the blue and
gold school colors, but the interior was too dark by day. Long
ago, interior fluorescent lighting was left on continuously, but
38

29_IAAwards_11.13aa.indd 38
this inefficient practice was eventually abandoned, leaving a dark
monolithic nighttime appearance. The challenge was to fulfi ll the
original vision for both daytime and nightt ime color appearance
within a power allowance of 2 watts per linear ft of glazing. No
existing fi xture could come close to meeting these requirements.
Supported by lab measurements, the lighting designers built
56 hermetically sealed, maintenance-free, acrylic light guide
modules for placement behind the glazing. In each, light from
three 1-W white LEDs is collimated into a prismatic channel,
spread and emitted downward through the glazing. Power
savings equal about 4,200 kilowatt hours per year.

“Reflect” is a permanent installation that utilizes sensors and
light to explore the idea of circulation within this government
building lobby. Light boxes, internally illuminated with RGB
LEDs, were designed to precisely fit the lobby’s columns.
The boxes enliven the space without intruding on the lobby’s
existing architecture using a slim 6-in. profile that creates the
illusion of interactive columns.
Using movement as inspiration, the design team developed
custom camera-tracking software to control the LEDs and
display abstract reflections of passersby. As visitors pass by the
boxes, their pixelated, abstract reflection follows. When there

is no movement within their vicinity, the light boxes replay
animations from previously recorded interactions with visitors.
In the rare instance maintenance is required, the boxes are
constructed to swing open on a sturdy hinge. The designers also
tested fixture brightness and multiple types of diffusion against
the amount of daylight present to ensure the boxes were neither
too bright nor too dim.

Daylight control was essential at this LEED Platinum
gallery where preservation of the artwork is the first priority.
Exterior windows in all galleries have 14 percent transmission
glass as the first element of daylight control. Each window
also has a 5 percent transmission motorized solar shade and
an opaque shade to shield the art from direct sunlight; both

are controlled by a centralized lighting system. The control
system responds to photocell readings, allowing the use of
daylight to be maximized and electric light to supplement as
required within conservation illumination levels. All secondfloor galleries have clerestories which provide screened daylight
in tandem with indirect fluorescent lighting. The clerestory
section is comprised of an exterior louver, high-performance
glazing, motorized opaque shade and an indirect 3,500K digital
ballast fluorescent cove. Individual wall-watching photocells
control electric lighting in each gallery. On the gallery roof, a
“suite” of four miniature windowed rooms, each equipped with a
photocell, measures the real-time daylight and operates the solar
shades in corresponding galleries. Lighting for the new galleries
utilizes less than half of the lighting power density otherwise
consumed by a standard track lighting solution. The control
strategy further reduces the electric load by up to 40 percent in
clear sky conditions.

A new pedestrian plaza for a convention center invites
attendees with an entry monument that slowly changes color
throughout the evening. The 1,000-ft-long plaza is grounded by
two large fountains at either end. Each fountain’s pumps, jets,
and RGB LED lighting are controlled by a centralized lighting
control system of more than 1,500 channels. The unifying
theme of the plaza is a “River of Light,” a pattern of 300 DMXcontrolled in-ground RGB luminaires programmed to mimic
the kinetic flow of water from one fountain to the other. This
“river” wends its way over 600 ft towards the convention center
and a fountain in the distance through a colonnade of palm
trees. Every luminaire in the plaza is LED and controlled by
the centralized system, which is adaptable for a limitless array

color combinations and patterns of movement are possible
through the control software, which can integrate special effects
and video files into complex event sequences, triggered by an
astronomical time clock. Each jet of each fountain can shift
color, allowing for multi-layered water feature events. Through
these energy-efficient luminaires and sophisticated controls, the
entire lighting design uses less than 0.1 watts per sq ft.

A unique challenge was presented inside this hotel lobby: How can new life be
breathed into an old work of art? The answer: better lighting. At 13 stories tall, the
monumental painting by artist Sol Lewitt demanded to be more prominent and
contemporary. First, the painting was enhanced by the addition of a series of suspended
three-dimensional loops lit with LED lights integrated into the loops themselves. The
lighting of the surrounding corridors was purposefully downplayed as to not detract from
the view. In addition to the illuminated loops, high-powered LED lights were placed at
the base of the painting. These lights are equipped with a computerized control system
that gradually changes the color of the light, dynamically changing the figure/ground
relationship of the work. This system allows the painting (and the lobby) to gradually
change color over the course of the evening, making it an utterly absorbing piece. The
three-dimensional loops interact with the painted swirls and twisting furniture to
fully immerse the viewer in the artwork. Through the dramatic use of light, color and
architecture, this decades-old painting has been rejuvenated.

When the aquarium’s largest exhibit, the 1-million gallon Open Sea tank, was rebuilt,
the lighting was reimagined, as well. The matte black tank is curved in all directions. To
create the illusion of great depth and make walls “disappear,” custom very high output
metal halide luminaires (95 CRI) were designed. Fan shaped slices of illumination get
progressively deeper in color moving away from the viewing window. The last third of
tank is not illuminated, thus animals swimming away from the viewing window get
progressively darker and eventually vanish. New narrow- beam “sunlight shafts” were
installed, while a surge pump was designed to move the water surface, increasing the
ripple of beams of light traveling through the water. Today, patrons are mesmerized, as the
beauty of wildlife and the hypnotic mystery of the animals is revealed as they swim in and

radically transforms from day to night, as the clientele shifts

from families and children to an after-hours spot. Controlled
via a DMX system, the lighting’s intense palette of hues
responds to the changing volumes of guests and can be
easily customized for events. Its LED fi xtures require litt le
maintenance, with fi xtures easily accessed via demountable
panels. The all-LED solution is extremely efficient, with a total
load of less than 0.6 watts per sq ft. The project was executed
within a $160,000 construction budget, with less than 10
percent allocated for lighting.

“Lean,” “green” and “technologically savvy” was the design
brief for this prefabricated, two-level Silicon Valley office
building. With that criteria in mind, the interior lighting design
consists of only three LED luminaire types. LED light slots
with custom-designed asymmetrical downward and outward
distribution line the perimeter of the glass and wood paneled
walls. Miniature LED downlights are integrated into narrow
openings between wooden slats. Lighting in the boardroom
and throughout is based on the building’s column modules and
can accommodate various room sizes. Individually addressed
luminaires are easily zoned together or separated using wi-fi

enabled devices. The stair experience, meanwhile, is ethereal
with purple walls and a backlit stretched ceiling. Here, the acidetched laminated glass walls are bathed in light and do not reflect
any lighting images. Finally, down below, a light well in the
subterranean garage conceals a linear LED luminaire providing
a wash of light when daylight is not present. Rhythmic patterns
of light punctuate the drive aisle. The use of bleeding-edge LED
technology, soft ware-based lighting controls, daylight harvesting
and a building management system results in a lighting design
that is intelligent, responsive and comfortable with an interior
connected load of only 0.62 watts per sq ft.

The Grousbeck Center for Students & Technology at
Perkins serves users with low vision, those who are blind
and deaf-blind, and people with additional disabilities. The
center houses a variety of spaces: classrooms, lounges, offices,
recreational spaces and a cafeteria. At the main entry, in-grade
signage uplights and interior wallwashing create a strong visual
beacon. Well-defined spatial organization, bright colors and
high-contrast are key to orientation, reinforced by lighting
treatments using visibly bright luminaires in clear groupings.

highlighted by 8-ft vertical linear wall luminaires to help
students orient to their travel direction. The highlight of the
facility is a multipurpose lounge, serving as classroom, study
breakout, as well as social hangout space. The café’s bright
social spaces complement a kitchen where compact fluorescent
task lights at counters allow flexible positioning of additional
illumination with no heat hazard. Tactile wall orientation
panels are highlighted in circulation spaces, and the iterative
wallwashing throughout makes for a pleasing lantern-like
exterior presentation and works in concert with the central
lounge pendant clusters. The resultant facility is as welcoming
from the outside as from the inside.

Th is science and discovery center’s dramatic facade and

to create a signature look for the community. The design
was inspired by the center’s exhibits, which focus on the
surrounding landscape and prairie biosphere. Inside the atrium,
the balcony edges are highlighted with individually controllable
LED nodes on 4-in. centers creating dynamic lighting that
resembles the billowing of a wheat field in the wind, with

its kinetic sideways motion. The atrium ceiling is uplit with
a separate set of color-changing LED fi xtures emphasizing
vertical scale and drama. Visible throughout the city, the atrium
ceiling is a “lighthouse” that draws the curious, but also serves
as a public address system. Special sequences can be triggered
by staff when a storm is rolling over the prairie, and the town
knows when the Kansas State teams win an athletic contest,
thanks to a KSU colors show in the atrium.

This subway station in Hamburg, Germany, is filled with steel
and light. The design goal was to capture the light in containers:
imposing, powerful objects arranged in a series, able to assert
themselves alongside the steel. Twelve lighting containers
were designed to resemble shipping containers, a nod to the
maritime environment of Hamburg Harbor. Recessed metal
halide downlights provide glare-free, crisp lighting for the ticket
halls. The colors can be coordinated by different sections in each
free-hanging unit or as an entire set, and can change to signal the

arrival or departure of trains, synchronize with the seasons or
simply create an enjoyable environment. Cladded with 6,500 sq
meters of massive, specially treated steel sheets, the station’s walls
and ceiling are enormous reflecting surfaces. Relatively dark and
not too shiny, they reflect the various colors and turn the space
into a magical, powerful lighting experience. The smooth color
reflections create an imposing contrast to the evenly distributed
warm white light integrated in the container bottoms to illuminate
the 200-meter long platform.

Situated within a new academic campus is a legendary
architect’s fi nal project. The challenge for the lighting designers
was that this unusual building is virtually all wall, no ceiling.
In the chapel, there are only three lighting elements: a circular
chandelier overhead, a cove where the walls meet the floor and a
stanchion supporting a line of AR111 gimbals lighting the altar.
The key light source is a 12-meter diameter circular pendant,
suspended from three points and structured like a bicycle wheel
with a steel tube core and three spokes. In the hub, six AR111
lamps light the altar. Seamless dimmable fluorescent lamps have
right angle electrodes to provide continuous light, with one
lamp serving each facet, illuminating the cedar wall. At night,
the chapel’s stainless steel skin is gently uplighted using 35-watt
CMH lamps in low pedestal washlights.

Located between downtown and the riverfront, this unique
water feature welcomes visitors to a busy convention center. The
owner’s goal was to replace a 10-year-old submersible system
with more energy-efficient and easier to maintain equipment.
The new color-changing system att racts visitors, provides
easy access for fi xture maintenance and reduces energy load
93 percent from the existing halogen based-lighting (from
182,000 to 11,000 watts). The new system was installed at the
ceiling, and fi xture locations were selected to provide an even

wash of continuous light along the rushing waterfalls. Each
50-W LED fi xture replaced six 250- or 500-W submersible
halogen uplights. A centralized control system allows the client
to change programming for the feature from their offices.
While color will often be used, retaining the ability to wash the
fountain in white light was desired and mixed from the RGB
during commissioning. The installation was completed under
the $35,000 budget with a 2.5 year payback expected based on
operating and maintenance savings.

When it came time to design the lighting for this full-service consulting
engineering fi rm, the client turned inward to its in-house lighting designers.
Every luminaire has local dimming control and complete adjustability from a
networked control system. Each configurable conference space uses separately
controlled recessed fluorescents, LEDs and suspended direct and indirect
components to ensure functional flexibility, and can be controlled with a single
dimmer at room entry, a five-button scene controller near the presenter’s screen,
or individual fi xture and shade control via an iPad. In private offices, direct/
indirect fluorescent luminaires are used within the rhythm of the exposed
concrete structure. When ample daylighting is present, fi xtures are automatically
dimmed down as low as 1 percent. Vacancy sensors throughout every space
are turned on manually only when needed. General office space is lighted
with adjustable task lights at each workstation, and luminaires are shielded to
produce no glare for workers seated or standing. With motorized shades raised,
daylighting allows task lights to dim automatically, and wireless dimming
controls allow each user to set a level or turn fi xtures off. Project maintenance is
simple and inexpensive with only three lamp types and easily accessible fi xtures.

Eliminating artificial light during the vast majority of the
workday through daylight harvesting was a high priority for
this office space. The lighting designer achieved this by utilizing
ducted skylights in strategic locations throughout the facility
and with daylight contribution from operable perimeter
windows. CFL architectural high-bay fi xtures contribute to
the overall industrial aesthetic of the open ceiling when on
or off. Conference room ducted skylights are equipped with
operable baffles for light level control. Light distribution at
work surfaces is uniform and maximizes comfort. Automated
strategies include occupancy detection, time-based scheduling

and dimming via photocell to achieve programmed light levels.
The implementation of a “green screen” will reduce interior
perimeter glare when foliage is established. Coiling doors
allow users the option of collaborating in an area open to the
environment, and users may also choose to work outdoors
under a translucent canopy. A classroom is equipped with
ducted skylights with operable baffles as well as high-efficiency
dimmable fluorescent troffers, giving users the ability to tune
lighting levels to specific tasks. The fully addressable automated
lighting control system makes altering lighting control schemes
a simple task throughout the building.

a continuous 3D grid of in-floor and in-ground LED uplights,
reflected and warmed by the wood ceiling, adds serenity and
comfort. Minimal direct/indirect pendant lighting for the
kitchen island is the only luminaire affi xed to an otherwise
flawless wood ceiling. Wall-mounted linear LED grazers

lighting, exterior linear LEDs highlight and defi ne the entrance.
Aligned with the grid above, in-grade uplights reveal the
building’s wood underside, harmonizing with ceilings above.
Stairs lit from above and below become a glowing sculpture.
Outside, concealed low-wattage LED wide floods soft ly reveal
the landscape, and minimal low-wattage LED landscape lights
will illuminate tree form. All lighting is dimmed and controlled
by photocells, occupancy sensors and a preset system.
