2009 - Glen Ellyn
Happy Anniversary Glen Ellyn! Anniversary Village of Glen Ellyn Calendar and Resource Guide Happy Anniversary Glen Ellyn! he Village of Glen Ellyn celebrates a significant milestone in 2009, the 175th anniversary of the community's first permanent settlement. In 1834, a time when the Potawatomi Indians roamed much of the area, Deacon Churchill and John D. Ackerman brought their families from New York and built a small cabin east of Stacy's Corners. The year 2009 is also notable for two other Glen Ellyn institutions: the anniversaries of the Glen Historical Society and the Glen Ellyn Park District. The Historical Society was formed 40 years ago, in 1969, following the purchase of Stacy's Tavern, which the Society faithfully restored to its original form so that generations of residents could experience a look at life in the mid-1800s. The Glen Ellyn Park District was established in 1919, and in that same year, acquired Lake Ellyn. One of the Village's great natural gems, Lake Ellyn was the first of many recreational opportunities the Park District has provided for the enjoyment of Glen Ellyn residents in its 90-year history. The State of Illinois will also be celebrating an important anniversary in 2009 as it marks the 200th birthday of Abraham Lincoln, the sixteenth President of the United States (1861-1865). Illinois and Glen Ellyn will be marking this important milestone with special events and activities throughout the year. Inside this calendar you'll find more information about Glen Ellyn's many distinguished institutions, their history and the vital role they play in the high quality of life residents of Glen Ellyn enjoy. You'll also find a wealth of information about the Village and handy tips you can use on a dayto-day basis. Evolution of the First Permanent Settlement Prior to the arrival of Glen Ellyn's first permanent settlers — Churchill Deacon and John D. Ackerman — much of northern Illinois was uncharted territory. In 1833, the Treaty of Chicago was enacted whereby the federal government purchased the area's land from Native Americans for 36¢ an acre and resold it to settlers for $1.25 an acre. Brothers Ralph and Morgan Babcock of Onondaga County, New York, laid claim to a large area 20 miles due west of Chicago's Fort Dearborn in 1833. Named Portrait of Deacon Churchill Babcock's Grove, this area "lay on an ancient buffalo trail that led westward from the Des Plaines River in present-day Maywood to a shallow bend on the East Branch of the DuPage River...Here the Babcock brothers set aside a claim for their New York neighbor, Deacon Winslow Churchill" (Images of America: Glen Ellyn, 2006). While the Babcock brothers did not remain in the area, the Churchill family did, arriving in 1834 and building a crude log cabin on the north side of present-day St. Charles Road near its intersection with Riford Road. (The site of the cabin is today marked by a large rock.) In that same year, John D. Ackerman brought his extended family and constructed a cabin just west of the Churchill property. In 1835, Moses Stacy came to Babcock's Grove, and 11 years later, constructed a tavern and inn, a place where weary travelers could obtain food, drink and lodging and provisions for their horses. By the 1840s, that area of the community — then known as Fish's Corners after Daniel Fish who had built a cabin there in 1835 — had grown to be the center of commerce. It boasted several blacksmiths, wagon and harness shops, Milo Meacham's General Store and a small Baptist church, a simple white building that was the area's first structure constructed solely as a church. John and Lurania Ackerman The community began shifting to the south when the Galena and Chicago Union Railroad arrived in 1851, thanks to a local Photo of the first Churchill cabin. landowner who provided the railroad with access through his property. In the area we now know as downtown Glen Ellyn, Dr. Lewey Quitterfield Newton donated a portion of his farm, a quiet, forested valley one mile south of Stacy's Corners, for the route of the railroad. A new community began to cluster around the area of the railroad, and was briefly known as Newton Station, to recognize Newton's contributions. The first stationmaster, David Kelly, arrived shortly after, however, and renamed the area Danby, after his native town in Vermont, because a Newton, Illinois already existed. Here a new town center took hold, where children attended a white frame school on Duane Street and Joseph R. McChesney opened the first grocery store, a business that continues to operate in Glen Ellyn today. In 1874 the community was given the new name of Prospect Park, thought by some to evoke a more bucolic image for the town that had become known for its great natural beauty. The name of Danby, moreover, had become associated with the local saloons where wild dancing was reportedly taking place. Soon, excursion trains were bringing Chicagoans to Prospect Park to picnic and enjoy nature. In 1889, local residents Thomas E. Hill and Seth Baker conceived of the idea of damming a small brook, known as Indian Creek, to form a lake in a swampy valley east of Park Boulevard. The brook ran through the downtown at one time, beginning in the An early photo of an Ackerman family cabin. vicinity just west of present-day Duane Street and Lorraine Road and meandering northwards across the tracks and ending in the valley east of Park Boulevard. The resultant lake was named Lake Glen Ellyn — "Glen" for the natural terrain and "Ellyn" after Thomas Hill's wife of the same name. A booming resort business and hotel briefly grew up around the lake. The popularity of Lake Glen Ellyn led residents to petition successfully in 1891 to have Glen Ellyn become the town's name, an appellation worthy of the rolling hills and tree-lined neighborhoods that characterize the community. In 1834, the first permanent settlers arrive in Glen Ellyn. In that year: • Andrew Jackson was president • European countries were ruled by Royal families • Railroads were beginning to replace horsepowered transportation • The "Alphabet Song" was introduced for teaching children the alphabet • The Spanish Inquisition was officially abolished by Isabella II, Queen of Spain Glen Ellyn continued to grow and organize with the establishment of the school system, public library, churches, Chamber of Commerce, Volunteer Fire Company and Village Links. Information about these and other notable Glen Ellyn institutions can be found throughout this calendar. Special thanks to Glen Ellyn Historical Society members Bob Chambers, Dan Anderson and Judy and Weldon Johnson, for assisting with historical detail and providing many historical photos for this calendar. Today, the Civic Betterment Party has evolved into an organization that nominates multiple candidates for each position on the Village and Library Boards of Glen Ellyn. Representatives are selected from each elementary school area with final selection made through a caucus open to all residents, known as a Town Meeting. Candidates selected at the Town Meeting are then put on the ballot for the general election in the following April. Glen Ellyn Woman’s Club Organized in 1895 The Glen Ellyn Woman’s Club was first organized by nine local women as a Study Club in 1895, with membership limited to 30 individuals. In 1910, the group became the Glen Ellyn Woman’s Club and lifted limits on membership. As a Study Club, members worked with the Village to establish the first library and also successfully pursued funding from the Carnegie Foundation, which built Glen Ellyn’s first public library. Today, the organization raises funds for a variety of causes, including Alzheimer’s research, behavioral health studies, community nursing services, the DuPage County Convalescent Center and the Fourth of July Committee. Fourth of July Committee Infant Welfare Society Organized in 1981 Established in 1926 Glen Ellyn’s Fourth of July Committee is made up of area residents who help to plan and stage the Village’s Fourth of July celebration each year. The Committee is responsible for coordinating Picnic in the Park during the Cardboard Boat Regatta, publicizing the activities of the celebration, fundraising to pay for parade groups and the fireworks and gathering approximately 150 additional volunteers who are needed to make the celebration a safe and fun experience. Local businesses, civic organizations, the Village and residents all donate to pay for the cost of this much anticipated and renowned celebration each year. The Glen Ellyn Infant Welfare Society was started by five women who made and sold aprons to raise money for families with children in need of assistance. Since that time, the group has donated various equipment and services to improve the lives of children in the community. In the early 1990s, a scholarship fund was established for graduating high school students. Jaycees Founded in 1951 Jaycees promotes and organizes events throughout the community and aims to develop the leadership skills of its members. The organization seeks to help individuals between the ages of 18 and 40 gain the tools they need for business development and community service. In Glen Ellyn, the Jaycees also organize the Village Carnival during the Taste of Glen Ellyn. Glen Ellyn’s Service Organizations Junior Woman’s Club Lions Club Founded in 1948 The Junior Woman’s Club is a service and philanthropic organization comprised of women dedicated to improving the community and assisting those in need. Yearly events include the Christmas Family Adoption Program; Project Linus; Jolly Grams, which helps Santa’s letters get to area children; planting flower beds in Glen Ellyn’s downtown; and flower and bake sales. The Junior Woman’s Club also provides support and fundraising for such groups as the Philip Rock Center, DuPage Senior Center, Teen Connection, YWCA and DuPage PADS. Founded 1923 Glen Ellyn’s Lions Club is among the oldest service organizations in DuPage County. Locally, the Lions Club sponsors such events as the Glen Ellyn Festival of the Arts. Internationally, the Lion’s club is known for its fight against blindness, including eye glass collections and programs that provide individuals in need with procedures to restore eyesight. Newcomer’s Club Kiwanis Founded in 1954 Kiwanis is a global organization of 8,000 clubs with over 260,000 members. The organization aims to improve the lives of people in the community by raising funds, which are used to help local food pantries, sponsor local scholarships, provide Christmas baskets for those in need and other charitable activities. League of Women Voters Organized in 1955 The League of Women Voters was originally part of the North DuPage County League of Women Voters, established in 1922, becoming its own organization in 1955. The League is a multi-issue activist organization that has registered voters, sponsored candidate debates and fought for voting rights for all citizens. The League actively studies both local and national issues. Formed in 1952 This women’s social organization welcomes people who have recently moved to Glen Ellyn and the immediate area. The organization provides activities and events in which people can make new friends in the community. Rotary Club Chartered 1943 Rotary’s focus is on community service projects that address such things as children at risk, poverty and hunger, the environment, illiteracy and violence. Rotary awards numerous college and vocational scholarships each year. Recent activities have included construction of the gazebo in Prairie Path Park and refurbishing shelters for Family Shelter Service, a non-profit organization that helps victims of domestic violence. The International Rotary Club is well known for its efforts in fighting polio. Members of Glen Ellyn's Village government, from left to right: Timothy A. Hill, teacher, author and developer, moved to Glen Ellyn in 1885 when the town was called Prospect Park and was not much more than a rough and tumble farming community. It was Thomas Hill who saw the potential for a beautiful lakeside resort and eventual suburb for Chicago. The fact that the village didn’t have a lake to offer was no obstacle. In 1889, Hill built one, christened it Lake Glen Ellyn (after the Welsh spelling of his wife’s name) and started the transformation of our town into a charming community with beautiful old homes, treelined streets, a real downtown district with appealing architecture, and good schools. Now, more than a century later, the Glen Ellyn Historical Society is working to develop another asset for the community, one that may not rival Lake Ellyn in size, but in attractiveness … while also providing educational and cultural value for the community. The vision of a History Park and Cultural Center for Glen Ellyn began in 1969 with the acquisition and restoration of Stacy’s Tavern (built in 1846) near the corner of Geneva Road and Main Street. It stands today as the only fully restored stagecoach inn resting on its original foundation in the State of Illinois. In 2008, the Historical Society acquired the property at the corner of Main Street and Geneva Road where an extensively landscaped plaza with period gardens will provide Glen Ellyn with an attractive new gateway to the Village from the north. In 2003, the Society acquired a nearby building at the corner of Main and Elm, converting it into the Glen Ellyn Center for Historical Research where many of the Society’s records, old photographs and artifacts are stored and educational programs are held. Those interested in learning more about the Glen Ellyn History Park & Cultural Center are invited to visit the Historical Society’s web site at www.gehs.org … or phone the Society at 630-858-8696. In 2006, the Society acquired the property just north of the History Center, the centerpiece of which is a home built in the early 1900s, which will be restored and used as a museum to showcase the last 100 years of Glen Ellyn’s history. Property to the west of Stacy’s Tavern Museum also was acquired in 2006, providing space for a future stagecoach barn which will house workshops, traveling exhibits and other educational activities.
