Introduction and Summary
How Does It Work
Cue Zone Into Schools is the World Professional Billiards
and Snooker Associations (WPBSA) World Wide Grass
Roots development programme; its main objective is
to develop the game of snooker within schools using a
concept known as Functional Snooker.
Once a school has chosen its route they will be visited
by an experienced and qualified WPBSA World Snooker
Coach who will undertake an induction on how to play
and deliver Functional Snooker.
Functional Snooker has been recognised by OFSTED as
a good practice in teaching English and Maths through
sport. This concept removes traditional scoring, replacing
it with numbered balls which retain their values, whilst
others have symbols to indicate whether to multiply,
subtract or use addition to calculate the value of the
shot. Within the programme there is a facility for schools
to develop their own Cue Zone, which contains six- foot
snooker tables, which can be used as a teaching and
learning resource or as an enrichment tool.
Youngsters can train and achieve the Official WPBSA
World Snooker Schools and Community Coaching Award
which can be linked to the BTEC Sport Qualification, this
will give young people the empowerment to develop
their own facility within school. With each programme
there is a scholarship for a teacher or a nominated person
to take part in the two day WPBSA World Snooker
Coach. Programme to become a qualified Snooker
Coach, led by Six Times World Snooker Champion Steve
Davis, 1979 World Snooker Champion and the sports
Terry Griffiths and NLTG’s Chris Lovell who is responsible
for the sports Grass Roots Development and Coaching
Programmes and who developed the concept.
The first phase of Cue Zone Into Schools was launched
at the 2013 World Snooker Championship in Sheffield
with twelve schools taking part across the UK, with many
achieving nationally recognised qualifications using
snooker.
Background
Developed in 2008 by Chris Lovell and Steve Davis, and
delivered in various formats, the concept has proved
successful in developing community cohesion for young
and old who are able bodied, disadvantaged or disabled.
It also supports young people who have failed, or who
are failing at school through attendance, low achievement
with English and Maths or behavioural issues. The
concept is adaptable and can be used for rapid response
to support NEET or rapid response to hot spots in the
community who suffer from poor or unacceptable anti
social behaviour.
A place will be arranged on the coaching course for
the nominated person, which will include full hotel
accommodation and all course resources and the
opportunity to achieve full WPBSA Coaching Status
and attend seminars regularly throughout the year and
take children to snooker events as rewards for their
achievements.
The school will receive the necessary support on an
on‑going basis in order to develop its Cue Zone and
using other options within the programme should it wish
to do so.
There are two starter programmes aimed at secondary
and primary schools with the primary school option titled
Steve’s Little Nuggets.
These then can lead to a more intensive programme
leading up to a Steve Davis Day, or the Steve Davis Day
can be used in isolation.
Typically the Steve Davis Day programme, would consist
of the set up and induction of the schools Cue Zone and
a planned number of sessions delivered by the WPBSA
World Snooker Coach, together with the planning of
the Steve Davis Day which lasts up to six hours and can
accommodate 32 to 64 children, either at the beginning,
middle or the end of the project.
During the Steve Davis Day delivery is all about fun. Each
frame of snooker lasts 15 minutes and is called 15/15
snooker. All the players break off together but only after
shaking hands and wishing each other luck. At the end of
fifteen minutes, the player who is in the lead is the winner,
promoting sportsmanship again by shaking hands and
the loser resets the table.
The winner progresses to the next round, whilst the
runner up has a choice to take part in another on table
activity called the 60 second challenge or 3 off the table
activities supporting fun or English and maths activities.
Jason Ferguson,
Chairman of the WPBSA says:
The future of any sport
“
relies on participation.
Cue Zone into Schools is
providing education and
community benefit and
we are very proud to see
so many young people
engaged with our sport.
”

the fun way to learn English and maths
How to play Functional Snooker
Functional Snooker has been developed to support
the teaching and learning of English and maths
from aged 7 and upwards.
At Key Stages 2 and 3 it is aimed at supporting the
achievement of English and Maths at Entry Levels
2 and 3 and level 1 and in particular older children
who have failed to achieve in line with their age.
The concept is very much based on embedded
learning and the game is the starting point for
schools to develop their own specific teaching and
learning resources once children are showing the
desire to learn English and Maths.
Numbered balls retain their values whilst others
have symbols to indicate whether to multiply,
subtract or use addition to calculate the value of
the shot.
Steve Davis’
Little Nuggets
Primary School
programme
Aimed at primary schools wanting to offer an additional
experience for children to learn English and Maths whilst
ensuring they take part in a fun and stimulating activity.
Functional Snooker is used as the scoring method of the
game and this is specifically aimed at Key Stage 2 and
supporting the achievement of English and Maths as
Entry Level 2 and 3.
Each primary school receives 2 x 6ft tables supported by
a induction visit by a qualified WPBSA World Snooker
Coach complete with extensive resources to deliver the
programme.
A scholarship is provided for a school representative
to attend the WPBSA World Snooker Coach Course
delivered by Steve Davis and Terry Griffiths.
Scholarships are also available for other school
representative such as teaching assistants or helpers
to achieve the WPBSA World Snooker Community and
Schools Coaching Award.
Should schools wish to only deliver Functional Snooker
this option is available.

« Since it’s launch we introduced ‘Functional
Snooker’ into the PE curriculum and set up a
lunchtime and an after school clubs. Since then
5 other members of staff have taught FS within
the PE curriculum and we now have a bespoke
‘Cue-Zone’ room enabling us to offer clubs every
lunchtime, after school, and twice a week as a
breakfast club. In Feb 2014 we produced an ‘impact
report’ which demonstrated how the students
involved, and the school as a whole had benefitted
on our journey so far. Some of the main findings
included:
W
W
180 students have experienced Functional
Snooker as part of their PE curriculum (9000
minutes per week)
W
W
W

W
W
15 of our worst attenders/latecomers regularly
attend a breakfast club an hour before students
are expected at school
60 students per week attend lunchtime
enrichment sessions, with a further 60
after school – these sessions are massively
oversubscribed
16 girls regularly attend enrichment sessions
88% of students claim that the PE curriculum is
better balanced with the inclusion of Functional
Snooker
Participants show improved behaviour around
school and there are less reported incidents at
lunchtime when sessions are held
97% maintain that they enjoyed Functional
Snooker
Snooker is being taught as part of the practical
unit to Y10 Btec Sport Level 2 students
5 Primary schools and 150 students have signed
up to the programme
The impact is already there to be seen. Moreover,
students are learning new physical and cognitive
skills and having fun whilst they learn. We feel that
we are educating the next generation of players,
officials, spectators and fans of this historic sport.

What the Children say!
“It’s great that we can do FS in our PE
lessons; it’s a totally new sport and a
lot of fun. I wouldn’t have ever tried it
otherwise”
“I have been coming to lunch club at
Cue-Zone since January and I have
improved my skills so much. I like the
challenge of having to think where I need
to put the cue ball for my next shot to
score the most points”
“I’m not very good but I like refereeing
the games and doing the maths”
“I am looking forward to the student v
Teacher competition coming up soon.
Even if I get beaten it will be good fun”
“I have helped with coaching some Year 7

« ‘Cue Zone Into Schools’ was introduced to school
formally with a high profile day supported by Steve
Davis & Chris Lovell. Since then we have dedicated
a room for use and have seen multiplicative
thinking, social and problem solving skills develop
in a fun to learn way, adding a dimension of joy for
students.
“I really enjoy doing the snooker in
school as it is fun and a different way
of learning. I would really recommend
this for other schools.”
Brittney Taylor (Year 9), Ormesby School
A project that began life in our school with an
enthusiastic lead from a snooker playing member of
staff has become a must use facility for a number
of linked faculties. Student usage ranges from Year
11 A* maths students to Year 7 special educational
needs. To each according to their need and from
each according to their ability! Multiplicative
numeracy and reasoning skills are doing a 147!

Steve Burrows - Head Teacher
Highfields School Wolverhampton
«
The school has been running cue zone into school
with some fantastic results. With the help of
professional coach, Andrew Highfield. The pupils
have incorporated Maths into the game through
functional snooker, as well as learning the basic
skills that are essential for success within the game.
Highfields were also lucky enough to host the ‘Steve
Davis day’ which included over 64 pupils from all
school years competing against each other to win
fantastic prizes. Overall this grassroots project is
proving a great success within Highfields as our
weekly participation figures are now well above 50,
with a large number of these pupils going on to
play snooker in their own time outside school.
»
“I’m part of our school snooker club
and cannot wait for lunchtimes so I can
play snooker. I play against my friends
and get coaching from Andy on a Tuesday
after school. I have also started playing
on a full size table outside school to
practice as well as watching the big
tournaments on T.V. The functional
snooker is also really helping with my
Maths as I’m doing it through something
I really enjoy.”
Harjinder Basra (Year 8), Highfields School
Moseley Park School
« Moseley Park’s Cue Zone Into School has been
hugely successful, with pupils regularly staying
after school to develop their skills. A number of
players, who have never played the game before,
have now joined the local snooker club. Functional
snooker has been utilised on a number of occasions
to engage pupils within curriculum maths lessons,
giving the pupils the opportunity to have a new,
enjoyable way of developing their numeracy skills.
»
Chris Edwards - Moseley Park School
Hockerill Anglo - European College
« Cue Zone has allowed lots of students in Hockerill
to engage in the sport. The tables have attracted
lots of students who aren’t passionate about
traditional sports. The tables are frequently used in
Boarding Houses at the College and very popular
extra-curricular clubs are run during lunch times.
Cue Zone has ensured that students who would
never have normally been able to access Snooker
have had the opportunity and it has had some
incredibly powerful impacts upon certain students
engagement in Physical Education and attendance
of our extra-curricular clubs.

same time”
Sydnee Hannam, Passmores Academy
“I enjoy functional snooker because it
puts maths and English into a sport.
This allows me to have fun while

Adam Barnes, Passmores Academy
« What are we constantly looking for in schools?
To engage the disengaged, to enthuse the
unenthusiastic and to improve all of us. We have
been able to achieve these things with significant
numbers of our young people thanks to our
partnership with the WPBSA and functional
snooker.
