THE JOURNEY

Odyssey of The Mind is an international program that allows children of all ages to form teams
and compete in creative problem solving opportunities at a Local, State and World level. The
name describes the program perfectly. It is truly an exploration of where a child’s mind can go
when it is not directed by parents or teachers, and is allowed the freedom to roam, think
creatively and critically, brainstorm with peers, and build extraordinary solutions and structures
with nothing more than a written problem that is put before them.
The children participate in two sets of problems - Long-Term and Short-Term. The Long-Term
problem is a team event, where the team is presented with a question, and has to come up with a
solution that involves creativity, style, thought, collaborating as a group, brainstorming, writing,
and finally building their solution together, with no parental input. During the Short-Term problem,
the team is sent into a room with a panel of judges where they are presented with verbal or handson verbal problems, and are expected to come up with creative solutions on-the-spot.
This year, two teams from San Elijo Elementary won first and second place at the local competition
which was held in Carlsbad in February. We had the opportunity to sit down with Renee Berg and
Andrea Nanigian, two mothers who co-coached team It’s How We Rule, a group of two girls and
five boys who won second place in their division. As we write this article, the group is getting
ready to compete in the State competition.

Yoga, No Corporate Additives
Tamara Lafferty-Totman has lived in San Elijo Hills for almost twelve years, and has been teaching yoga for over fifteen years. Her
husband, Andy, moved into San Elijo four years ago, and has been teaching yoga for over ten years. Together, they have been active
members of the yoga community in North County San Diego, and the practice of yoga has always been an integral part of their lives.
Andy and Tamara have talked about a husband-and-wife-owned yoga studio for a long time now, always dreaming of the day when that
would become a reality. They say that their new studio, Vinyasa Arts, was an unexpected gift from the universe that they have accepted
with humility and gratitude, with the desire to make it special and different, and with a focus placed on educating those that walk through
the doors of their Cardiff studio.
Tamara and Andy will offer vinyasa yoga classes, as well as yin yoga, yoga teacher training, teen yoga and little tykes yoga lessons. They aim
to help people incorporate yoga into their lives in the way that suits their needs. If your goal is to take your practice to a new level, or to build
confidence, or to study to be a yoga teacher, or even just to be part of a community, Vinyasa Arts is the place for you to take those steps. If
yoga has become a little mundane for you, insert new life into your practice by trying their “Moving Off the Mat” workshop, where you will
learn to transition through poses and postures in a fun, artistic, dramatic way. This class is set to progressive urban style music and can be

seen as a performing art.
If Moving Off the Mat isn’t for you, try their Float and Transition or Inversion workshops, build strength and flexibility with one of their accomplished teachers, or enroll in a 200 hour
yoga teacher training program which is limited to only sixteen trainees so that Andy and Tamara can offer one-on-one guidance and education, helping their trainees find their niche
and be successful in the art and joy of teaching yoga. There is a class for people of all ages, and with all levels of experience with yoga. The next session starts May 24.
Educating people and the community is what Andy and Tamara hope to do in their new Cardiff location. They want to stress that they are 100% organic, with no corporate additives,
encouraging individual style, and discouraging cookie cutter yoga lessons. Vinyasa Arts will offer live music and yoga events, community classes, free yoga in the park every month,
charity events and more. Think about becoming a member and enjoy free workshops twice a month at the studio.
Vinyasa Arts is located at 2023 San Elijo Ave., Cardiff by the Sea, 92007. For more information, call (760) 707-7411 or visit them at

Girl Up
By: Priyanka Athalye
Hello San Elijo! My name is Priyanka and I usually write a column in the school section of SHARE with updates
about San Marcos High. This month, I wanted to share something a little different.
I recently started a club at the high school called “Girl Up” which is a campaign of the United
Nations' Foundation. This is an organization that provides money and resources to educate
adolescent girls in third world countries in South America and Africa. This is a cause I'm extremely
passionate about because it helps girls in these underdeveloped communities receive equal
opportunities regardless of the situations into which they were born.
I have viewed firsthand in my visits to India, the poverty and lack of opportunity that can hinder progress.
Girls all across the developing countries are forced to drop out of school to marry early, have children as soon
as they become of age and live a life in service to their unfaithful and disloyal husbands who are often times
Top row: Emily, Rubiya, Emma, Obed Middle row: Jamila, Jenny,

generations older than the girls themselves. This life robs young women with great potential of their
opportunity to make an impact. They are instead forced to walk hours upon hours daily to haul fresh-water
for the day back to their villages because in these impoverished areas, running water and a sewage system are out of the question. This duty naturally prevents girls from living a life of
freedom and expressing their brilliant talents and ideas.
In America and other prosperous countries, our daily lives aren’t affected by this at all; we don’t see it, and we certainly don’t go through it. We often times forget how lucky we are. We
forget that we are taking our education, our running water, our technology, and our most prized freedom for granted. I believe that each and every individual should be offered a chance
to acquire knowledge and live better lives.
Girl Up reaches out to American girls and has us form clubs affiliated with our school and set up goals for fundraising, advocating our cause, and raising awareness of our club each
semester. Jonville Team Real Estate has kindly agreed to support our cause. They will be generously donating part of the proceeds from the May 17 community-wide garage sale to our
club. In addition, we will also be hosting an independent bake sale that day. We will have stands set up throughout the community and we hope you will stop by to pick up some goodies
(they will be delicious, I promise!!), and help our cause.
We hope you’ll come out and support us on May 17! For more information, contact Priyanka Athalye at [email protected].
Ayurveda in Daily Life
By: Erin Easterly
The word Ayurveda has an air of mystery to its name. Most people have heard
the word, but few understand the history, wisdom, and applications of this ancient
health system. Deepak Chopra, for whom I work, has been instrumental in bringing
the universal principles of Ayurveda to the West. He has written over 70 books on
the topic and yet he himself acknowledges that he has only scratched the surface of
the time tested tradition. This fact alone attests to the challenge of succinctly
explaining Ayurveda when friends and neighbors casually ask, “What exactly IS

Real Pirates at
The San Diego
Natural History
Museum
Real Pirates tells the true story of The Whydah, a slave ship
turned pirate ship that sank off the coast of Cape Cod nearly
300 years ago. The Natural History Museum is so proud to be
home to the treasure chests of gold, silver, coins, jewelry,
pistols, cannons, knives and a life sized replica of the ship’s
stern that visitors can board.
The year was 1717, and valuable cargo was being shipped across the
Atlantic. Sam Bellamy had fallen in love, and wanted to prove that
he was worthy of the woman of his dreams, and went off to seek his
fortune as a pirate. He captured the slave ship The Whydah, which
was laden with gold and treasure on her way to England.
But alas, before they could divvy up the spoils (each member was
to walk away with 50 pounds of treasure), they were hit by a storm
and the ship, along with 143 men and all the treasures sank to the
bottom of the ocean.
The Whydah was located by explorer Barry Clifford in 1984, and is
the first fully authenticated pirate ship discovered in the United
States’ waters.
A 10,000 square foot exhibit is waiting to be discovered and
explored by adults and children of all ages. Raise a pirate flag, learn
how to tie knots, touch the real treasure, walk on the stern of The
Whydah, learn what the life of a slave was like on a pirate ship, and
do so much more. Allow at least an hour to enjoy this exhibit, it’s a
sight to behold, right here in our back yard.

San Marcos Residents Report
High Level of Satisfaction
By: Chris Orlando, San Marcos City Council

San Marcos residents reported a very high level of satisfaction in
a recent Community Opinion Survey that was commissioned by the
City. The survey, which was conducted by TrueNorth Research and

presented to the City Council during its April 8 meeting, measured
how residents view the City and the services it offers. The survey
found that 94 percent of residents rated the quality of life in San
Marcos as “Excellent” or “Good” and overall 89 percent of
respondents were “Very Satisfied” or “Somewhat Satisfied” with
the City. These are very encouraging results and a sign that the
City is meeting its goal of making San Marcos a great place to live.
The survey, which was conducted in February, included 400 respondents
from a random selection of nearly 3,000 residents. To ensure a higher level

of accuracy, it was administered through a combination of phone interviews,

Quality of Life
The results of 94 percent satisfaction in the area of quality of life are an improvement from a similar survey
that was conducted in 2009 in which approximately 89 percent of residents rated quality of life in San Marcos
positively. The overall satisfaction rating of 89 percent outpaces that of cities such as Encinitas (86 percent) and
Chula Vista (83 percent).
Residents also reported high levels of satisfaction in several core areas of City services, including keeping public
facilities maintained (98 percent), providing fire protection and prevention services (98 percent), providing
emergency medical response (95 percent), providing parks and sports fields (94 percent) and maintaining public
landscapes and medians (93 percent).
When asked the importance of services, respondents ranked emergency medical response services, repairing
local streets, providing fire and police protection, and maintaining traffic signals as the highest priority. About
one-fifth (21 percent) noted reducing traffic congestion, an area in which the City has been very focused, as an
area of improvement. Undoubtedly, traffic congestion and the impact of Highway 78 on our local streets is a
challenge on which the City needs to continue to work. However, nearly the same amount (20 percent) noted
that no changes were needed in the City or they could not name anything particular to change.
Other survey results also included very positive feedback for our parks and recreational facilities
(89 percent satisfied), management of City finances (88 percent satisfied) and responsiveness of City staff
(83 percent satisfied).
While just a snapshot of the views of San Marcos residents, overall the survey provided
very encouraging feedback about the quality of life and the overall satisfaction levels of
residents in the City. You can access the complete survey results at the City’s website:

WOMEN’S EMPOWERMENT – GRANNIES PROJECT
Our meeting this month will be on Tuesday, May 13 at 7PM and will feature Women’s
Empowerment International (WE). Carol Clause, long-time member of our club and
current President of WE, will be sharing an overview of the work this organization does
providing microloans and business tools to help women move out of poverty. WE has
projects here in San Diego and in Honduras, Ghana, and Uganda.
Carol, along with WE member, Jeannette De Wyze, will share information about WE's
newest project in Uganda that serves 7,000 grandmothers who care for 43,000 children
orphaned as a result of the massive AIDS epidemic in that country, where a little over half
of the population lives on $1.25 per day. Some of these grandmothers live in primitive
huts that lack latrines, safe water, and ventilated cooking spaces.

Determination + Drive + Dedication =
Success at the Science Olympiad
Science Olympiad is a national non-profit organization dedicated to improving the
quality of K-12 science education, with an attempt to increase the interest in
Science, and a passion for learning. The schools of San Diego County have
participated in the Science Olympiad for over thirty years now, but San Elijo Middle
School had never been part of this event until this year.
They say that if you ask, you will receive, and this story is the perfect example of how this is
true. Ms. Kurylo had requests from parents who wanted our children to participate in the
Science Olympiad. Concurrently, a student from San Marcos High School approached Mrs.
Bernard, Science teacher at San Elijo Middle School, wanting to know if there was any
possibility of starting this event at our middle school.
For those of you who know Ms. Kurylo, you know that “no” isn’t quite her favorite word in the
vocabulary. Together, Patricia Kurylo and Mariann Bernard started the ball rolling on this new
adventure. It is important to note that both Patricia and Mariann worked as volunteers on this
event, adding on the extra paperwork and preparation to their already full schedules, working
after school and during vacation days to help bring this opportunity to our children.
By November of 2013, Ms. Kurylo and Mrs. Bernard had a group of 15 children from
5th-8th grade (3 girls and 12 boys), who were ready to commit to the extraordinary
amount of work it takes to be successful in the Science Olympiad.
Mrs. Bernard organized a weekly after-school class for the children, where she assisted and
coached them in their preparation. The kids formed teams, designed and created their
group t-shirt, studied tirelessly, communicated constantly with each other, the volunteer
parents and Mrs. Bernard to continue to stay on track with their studying and building.
On February 8, at Rancho Bernardo High School, our fifteen students participated in a total
of 13 events, including Anatomy, Rocks and Minerals, Disease Detectives, Metric Mastery,
Rhodes Scholar, Solar System and other such exciting topics. Of those 13 events, 3 groups
received medals, which is phenomenal in their debut year, and after just a few months of
serious preparation.
Rohun Athalye and Vivek Vijayakumar took seventh place in the Solar System
competition. Vivek and Taylor Quach took eighth place in the Rocks and Mineral
event and Nishita Amancharla and Aarti Visswanathan came in ninth place in the
Anatomy section of the Science Olympiad.
With no additional funding except for the $160 that PTO paid for the admission fee, this success
can be placed squarely on the shoulders of the children who worked tirelessly, their parents
who supported them, and most of all, Ms. Kurylo and Mrs. Bernard who volunteered their own
time and energy to be the backbone of this fearless, confident group of Science Olympiad
newbies who surprised the veteran competitors with their knowledge, sheer determination.
Congratulations to all our participants who represented our school and
teachers, and we thank them for letting us share their great success.

FINDING BALANCE
When a Leap of Faith
Becomes a New Life
As mothers, we are always striving to find the perfect balance, and as working mothers, finding
that balance becomes a little more challenging when work starts to creep into your time with your
children. It’s at that point as a working mother when you take stock of your life and decide which
way you want to go and what you will do to make that choice work.
This is exactly what happened to Tracy Berman about four years ago. She had been in the retail business as a
District Manager for many years, and enjoyed being responsible for the large territory that she managed, but it
suddenly hit Tracy that with her son starting high school, she only had four years left with him in the house. This
realization made her stop in her tracks, and even though she loved her job, and knew that her career was on an
upward path, she did not love the hours, and really disliked the time away from her son.
Tracy took a risk, a jump, but an educated and thoughtful one. She took some time off to think and evaluate
her life as a single mother, her responsibilities, and what she wanted to accomplish with her son during his high
school years. So Tracy threw herself wholeheartedly into her second career as an Interior Designer, along with
her full-time job as a mother.
Although it seems as if the jump from District Manager in the retail industry to Interior Designer is a big one, it
really isn’t. Tracy has a Bachelor’s Degree in Fashion Merchandising, and since retail is based on sales, which is based
on how you merchandise and organize the store, design has been part of Tracy’s field of work (and life) forever.
Now, Tracy Berman enjoys every single day as an Interior Designer at Coastal Home Design Studio,
located in Vista, and is also responsible for her own Home Staging business that allows her to help
realtors decorate houses that are being put on the market, or just advise clients who need a fresh set
of eyes and some fabulous input on how to bring new life to their homes.
An interior designer has the ability to come into your home and re-style it with just what you own. Oftentimes,
what you need is someone without any emotional attachment to your furniture and accessories who can rotate
them throughout the house. You will be amazed at what a Styling Appointment with Tracy can do for your home
- it will allow you to stretch your money, update the tone of a room and freshen up an old, tired space.
If you’re buying a new house and are worried about that utterly confusing trip to the Design Center where
you choose upgrades, flooring, window treatments and appliances, Tracy is the person to call. Designers have
access to products, suppliers, installers and buyers that most of us don’t have, and so having the expertise of a
designer like Tracy, and the folks are Coastal Home Design Studio, is invaluable. The most important part of this
journey is building relationships with realtors and clients that she works with, relationships with the builders,
contractors and staff at Coastal Home Design, but most of all, the relationship that she shares with her son.
Tracy has become an integral part of her son’s lacrosse team, feeding hungry boys,
shuttling them to and from lacrosse matches, helping with fundraising and supporting
them as they balance academics with the sport they love. She is so thrilled that she gets
to spend more time with her son, who is now in 10th grade. Finding balance is never easy
when you’re a single mother, but when you have the sheer determination to make the most
of every minute you have with your child, a jump can become the best ride of your life.
Please see Tracy Berman’s ad on page 2 of SHARE for additional information.

sense of community pride? And, help get the word out about our organizations,
events, people and resources to everyone in the city?
2. When you visit local businesses, let them know about the publication
and send them to our website (www.SHAREsanmarcos.com) or have them
(I don’t mean a publication that replaces SHARE San Elijo. We will always have our
neighborhood publication. I’m talking about a second publication. One that has the
same purpose and energy of SHARE, but that is designed for any resident in San
Marcos to enjoy and share.)
call me.
3. Invite all of your Facebook friends to like our SHARE San Marcos Facebook
page. Help us get people excited about the publication before it actually
comes out.
Don’t you think that would be awesome?
4. SHARE our website on Facebook (www.SHAREsanmarcos.com). People
I get goose bumps just thinking about it – which is why I simply can’t stop myself
can get on our interest list & get updates from behind-the-scenes.
from bringing this vision to life.
Next month, we’re launching a second publication – SHARE San Marcos. And, we’re
so excited about it and what it will be able to do for San Marcos to build a stronger
community for all of us.
Here’s the thing, though. We can’t do it all by ourselves. We truly need
your support to help make this happen. And, I totally believe that those of
us here in San Elijo who understand the value of what a sense of community
can do for our quality of life…we can help that idea spread throughout
San Marcos.
Just those few things would be a huge help. We are so excited
about what this publication will be able to do for San Marcos and
you could be pivotal in helping us get it off the ground. If you tell
3 friends and they tell 3 friends, and so on…we can reach the
entire city in no time and we'll have all we need to pull off a
beautiful first issue. We appreciate any support you can give
toward the effort!
If you have any questions, brainstorms, ideas, connections please let me know!
San Marcos is already a close-knit community. There are already so many leaders in
our community who give so much of their time and talent in service. There are so
many people who are out there stirring up amazing projects that will benefit all of
us. There are so many fantastic resources right here in San Marcos that people
