Youth Directors Report
With a record 687 registered Nippers for the 2009/10 season, this was always
going to be a big year. An increase in 30% in our numbers highlights the growth and
popularity in surf lifesaving in recent times and the appeal of Bronte Surf Club.
It was a major goal this season to concentrate on initiating a program that focused
on developing the children into future lifesavers. If we could successfully teach
them at one of Australia’s most difficult beaches, we would all have the comfort of
knowing that our children could swim and save lives anywhere in the world.
We tried many new initiatives this year; some of them worked and some not as
well as we had hoped. The signing desk for attendances proved a winner, as did
providing ball sports on those bad Bronte days. We also encouraged groups to have
more fun in the ocean, whether that was using the IRB’s to practice mock rescues
or paddling to Tamarama or swimming through the Men’s Bogey Hole.
We also reintroduced back into the club
board riding this year. This has been a
welcome return and it was no surprise
that 1 of our 2 gold medalists at the
State Junior Nipper Championships was
Luke Faddy for boardriding and 2 State
Open Board Riding medals were won
by Phoebe and Olivia Miley-Dyer. It was
fantastic to see so many Nippers joining
the surfing competitions on those early
Sunday mornings. Thank you to Matt
Faddy and Peter Strain for running the
junior boardriders program.
Communication was an important focus
this year. For the first time we had an
information booklet and our website
was regularly updated. Another first was
parents volunteering to help Peta Radley
in the merchandise tent. Peta deserves
huge praise for the job she does every Sunday. I would also like to acknowledge
Speedo who this year became our swimwear supplier.
One initiative that did not work was the BBQ roster. Whilst we had many volunteers,
most either do not turn up or would cancel in the week of their allocated slot. Luckily
we could rely on Roley Tyrell, the Ryan family (Paul and Tracie) and Chris “the Egg
Man” Winter to save the day.
We also reintroduced the Junior Ocean Swim, which was held on the morning of the
Bondi to Bronte Ocean Swim. In very big and difficult ocean conditions, 70 children
completed the courses, including girls and boys aged 8 years old. To me, watching
this achievement was one of the highlights of the season.
From an outsiders perspective, a Sunday morning at a club appears like ‘organised
chaos’. What occurs over that 3 – 4 hour period is a great credit to not only the
children, but all of the parents, water safety personnel and age managers. From

the moment Roley Tirrell and Col McDermid help me set up the beach and BBQ at
dawn, to when we close the program at 12pm, there are so many people that help
make the experience for our children on a Sunday enjoyable and very importantly,
safe.
Whilst having fun on a Sunday and lifesaving is the ultimate goal, competitions
always play an important part and this year was no exception. Internally, we had our
club championships held over 2 rounds; one prior to Christmas and the other in the
New Year. The standard in which these championships are run and participated in
are a credit to all involved.

Our first external competition was the Waverley Shield held at Bondi. Whilst

The second major championship was to be the Branch Championships which
is traditionally held before the State Championships. This year the event was
postponed to the end of the season and whilst we did not have a full complement
of competitors, we still managed 27 medals including 5 gold medals with Max Ries

merchandise tent, or putting flags in the sand on a Sunday. To Jane and Ingrid who
took the attendances for all the young age groups, thank you.
To our “celebrity” trainer Harries who oversaw many kids who took up board training
during the week. The numbers sometimes were incredible and his enthusiasm
and passion never waned. Thank you also to Alex, his beautiful sidekick, to the
Mossman’s who donated generous time in helping us to have boards at training and
also in transporting boards to major competitions. Also thanks to Karen Swinburn
for the many hours she contributes to our program and to the endless willing
helpers like Kylie Alp, Dott Whillier, Simon Francis, Paul Manning and Peter Hunter,
to (dangerously) name but a few. To Paul Szarbo for repairing the many, many
boards, your unseen work is appreciated.
Sarah Stuart-Jones did a wonderful job as the trainer and ‘supercoach’ of the gold
winning all age beach relay team. Jane Ryan was an incredible help as our
person in charge of all of the officials, as was Cathy Ridge who oversaw
our awards presentations. Dave Fleeting and Mike Weale are owed an
incredible debt of gratitude for ensuring our water safety personnel were
always there for us. Special thanks to Deborah Harrigan (LHI Real Estate)
for being the sponsor of our water safety shirts and to Mike Weale (Planit Software
Testing) the sponsor of our State shirts.
To Alice Tricks, our Nipper Captain who represented the club with great distinction.
leading the way with 2 golds. Special mention to Eamon Wright who came down all
the way to Elouera to help out the All Age Beach Relay Team only to discover he
was not to be able to compete because of the rules imposed. A truly unselfish effort.
The pinnacle of competitions is of course the State Championships which were
held again at Swansea Belmont. A record amount of competitors from all clubs in
the state competed. The seriousness taken by some clubs could be seen by the
microphone and walkie talkie systems and the amount of competition managers
they had. Thank god for the Bronte way!
Bronte again excelled with 12 medals including 2 gold medals. One to Luke Faddy
and the other being the blue ribbon sand event, the All Age Beach Relay. Another
special mention to one of our competitors, Morgan Penrey who was the only U12
boy competitor. Not only did he compete in his events but he was seen running up
and down the beach trying to help some of the U13 teams.
To Graham Ford our President and the Board of Management for their
unconditional support for the Nipper program all year. The hours that
Graham spent ensuring that Jamie Bargenda and Luke Aldous could
compete at States this year were incredible. It was fair justice that
the boys ended up winning a State medal. To Ross Miles and Geri
Ford in the office, your assistance is appreciated.
I can think of no greater activity in sport but to be involved in
surf lifesaving on a Sunday. No other sport or activity can give
parents the opportunity to be so involved with their children.
Everyone should be so proud of what the children achieve
on a Sunday. What could be more Australian than to be on
the beach on a Sunday with your friends with the ultimate
reward of knowing that one day our children will save lives.

Bronte Junior Ocean Swim
This year saw the reintroduction of the Bronte Junior Ocean Swim. The event
was held on the same day as the Bondi to Bronte Ocean Swim and we offered 2
courses: A 400 metre swim for the U9’s and U10’s and an 800 metre swim for the
U11 to U14’s.
In incredibly difficult conditions, just on 70 competitors completed the course.
To see children as young as 7 years old running up the beach with big smiles was
one of the highlights of the season.
Winners of the 400 metre category were Stuart Swinburn and Georgia Strain and of
the 800 metre race Amy Ridge and Henry Kamp. It was a great achievement by all
and everyone should be so proud of the competitors.

Under Six [6] Girls
Well kids your first year at Bronte Nippers has now ended and I hope that each of
you have had fun, gained new found skills in the water and generally learnt so much
about what happens at the Beach and in the Surf. I had the pleasure of coordinating
the Under 6 Boys and Martin Palfrey did a wonderful job with the Under 6 girls. As
usual our numbers were exceptionally high, but overall the figure did not drop as
reflected at our presentation day.
The organisation of such a large group is achieved by having fantastic “parent
participation” and other surf club support. This year in particular I would like to thank
especially Simon Francis, who came on board as a new parent and volunteered to
put together a weekly information sheet for the parents and kids of the U6’s. I have
been involved with Bronte Nippers for 24 years and Simon’s work to this young
group, was the first time I had experienced this type of support in educating the kids
and the parents. Simon recorded the seasons highlights with his camera and I hope
the surf safety tips remain imbedded in your children’s minds, to ensure they are
safe whilst visiting the beach.
Martin and I value so much the support of parents, for at such a young age the surf
can be such a daunting place. By having you each involved and getting in the water
with them to encourage their confidence, it does really help.
The secret to running this age group, we have found, is that kids like to see and do
what others are attempting to do. By holding hands and encouraging all to go into

the waves is the first step. All parents should have seen so much improvement from
day one to end of season. The running and swimming and exercise is so healthy for
the growth of the children. You should all be proud
of that growth.
I was so sorry I could not be at our final award presentation day, as I was away at
the National Surf Carnival in Queensland. It is also a fun day where we hand out the
achievement medals and bring out the water slide and let the kids really remember
and cherish their first year in Bronte Nippers. I do hope your child has enjoyed the
season.
Next year you will all move up into the U7 age group. The challenge to the parents
is to continue to be involved, to put your hands up to be helpers and even put
yourselves forward to obtain your surf certificates (Bronze Medallion). Qualified Life
Saving parents are the back bone of Bronte Nippers. So why not come on board as
a family. Take an active part.
I look forward to seeing you all again next season on Bronte Beach. Unfortunately
Martin and I will stay back to welcome the next wave of new recruits of U6’s. I am
sure that your parents will put up their hands to lead you forward to be Life Savers.

Under Seven [7] Girls
The U7 girls started the season with a fun competition to name their group. The
overwhelming favourite chosen was “The U7 Bronte Bluebottles”.
This season’s aim was to educate the “Bluebottles” in water, beach safety and
nipper skills while having as much fun as possible. We challenged our “Bluebottles”
to wading in deeper water which by the end of the season was a huge success and
enjoyed by all. Another favourite activity was swimming in the pool and Bogey Hole
using our “magic hoops”. The girls gained confidence ducking under and through
the hoops in preparation for swimming in the ocean waves. The girls enjoyed our
board sessions when they could practice running with the boards into the water to
start paddling.
On the sand the “Bluebottles” eagerly ran in the flags and relay races. Finally to
encourage our nipper group to care for our environment we included a beach hunt
where they collected many items off the beach to help clean it up.
A huge thanks to all the parents who helped out every week and thank you “fluro
yellow shirts” you helped make it a great season. Lastly a big Thank-you to all the
“Bluebottles” who always came along every Sunday with huge smiles on their faces
willing to try any activity we posed to them. You are all great Life Savers of the
future. Keep swimming and see you next season.

Under Seven [7] Boys
We started the year with over 60 registrations and on day one both boys and age
managers were nervous. The boys for facing the intimidating Bronte surf and the
managers with the legendary shoes of Col McDermid to fill!
There was a distinct contrast between all the boys in October versus March. Whilst
early there was some trepidation to enter the surf and dive for flags. By the end of the
year the smiles were priceless as they charged into the surf on boards and wade
and ate sand as they attacked the flags. The boys have really developed their surf
and beach skills over the course of the year and look more than ready to progress
further and enter the field of competition as U8’s next year.
I would like to thank all the parents for bringing their children down early every
Sunday morning and helping out with 60 energetic budding surf life savers. I would
also like to thank all the water safety who jumped in the water rain, hail, shine, or
tsunami to assist the boys in developing their water skills. Hopefully we will have
more volunteers doing their bronze medallion to assist with water safety as the boys
progress further in the water.
Finally I would like to thank the boys. Their progression over the year was
phenomenal, and those sandy faced smiles make it all worth while. I hope to see as
many of you back as U8’s next season.

Under Eight [8] Girls
The introduction of the Surf Education curriculum, the need to learn new skills
in preparation for ocean swimming and paddling next year and our first year of
competition made 2009/2010 a busy and rewarding summer for the U8 girls.
The age manager team and the wider parent group worked with the girls on skills to
get them confidently in and out of the water whether swimming or on a board.
While cold water in early October and a few girls new to the beach made for some
tentative first steps, by the end of the summer our group was confident about hitting
the Bogey Hole either swimming, board paddling or through one of the many drills
invented to keep things fun. We also had a number of U8 parents qualify for their
Bronze Medallions and other parents who under took the competition officials
course.
We had a big group of competitors for Waverley Shield, the South Maroubra
Carnival, Sydney Branch and State Age Championships.
A big thank you to Col McDermid for his work training our state team for the wade
events.
A special thanks goes to my fellow age managers David Pysden and Jane
Needham for all their work to keep the summer fun and educational and keeping our
girls and their parents well informed about the nipper program.

Under Eight [8] Boys
The U8 boys had a great year for Bronte. Alot of confidence
was gained in the Water as conditions made it favourable for
plenty of wading, swimming and board training which will be
a tremendous lead into next season. We had some excellent
sand competition throughout the year and unearthed some
exciting young runners who will be further improved after this
years experience.
The boys had their first taste of competition through
Carnivals at Bondi, South Maroubra, Swansea and Elouera
and all competitors performed extremely well. We were
especially proud of Stan Daly’s growth in confidence , which
culminated in representing the U8’s in the All Aged Relay at
the State Carnival, who won Gold.
Overall, a wonderful effort from all the boys. We’d also like
to extend our sincere thanks to our fantastic water safety
parents who were so supportive of the group throughout the
year. Also to our BBQ helpers, thanks for your help as well.
Finally, thanks to Basil for all his tireless work and support for
Bronte Nippers.

Under Nine [9] Girls
This year our girls were faced for the first time with
the challenges of surf swimming and board racing
as part of their weekly activities.
I was very proud of the transition from fear to
confidence in the water made by many of the girls
this year despite the rough conditions we often
faced on Sunday mornings.
The management of this group was very much a
team effort and I would like to extend thanks to
all parents who helped out with management and
water safety, particularly Tessa Swadling, Matt
Loxton, Steve Cannane, Holly Findlay and Amy
Somes.
On the competition front, our group did very well at
Waverley Shield with a huge points tally. At State
our representatives competed in the board relay
final and swim team final. At Branch we won silver
in the sprint relay and bronze in the swim team.
Many thanks also to Basil for his tireless help in
coordinating activities and competitions.

Under Nine [9] Boys
The cool waters of early October didn’t dampen the enthusiasm on registration day
with 47 boys signing for the 09/10 nipper season. As the water warmed up so did
our second year of inter-club competition.
With a very good performance in our first competitive hit out (The Waverley Shield in
November), we had the boys eager for a bigger representative stage. With our sand
and water skills honed to perfection the much anticipated clash in the Shire resulted
another solid effort!
As we took to the F3 in mid-February, the boys had some unfinished business to
settle on the beach at Swansea-Belmont for the NSW State Carnival. Four of our
swimmers finished with silver in the team swim event - M Ries, S Swinburn, H
O’Neil and F (the Bull) Tricks.
But the enthusiasm of the core group on our regular Sunday mornings was the
foundation to a truly enjoyable year.
I’ll look forward to seeing you all on the beach again this October. Kneesup!

Under Ten [10] Girls
The U10 Girls had another wonderful year. A strong focus was placed on water
skills, and in particular surf skills. There was significant improvement and all girls are
now stronger swimmers and can confidently take on the best of what Bronte Beach
can dish up!
Some valuable skills were learnt when on a few occasions girls were caught in a rip.
With out panic the scenario was assessed and the girls responded admirably and
were able to safely negotiate there way back to shore. It’s great that the girls now
have a life long skill that will always help keep them safe!
Emphasis was also placed on board riding and many girls are now “carving up”
the waves. We were also pleased to concentrate a few sessions on rescue skills,
incorporating basic CPR.
At competitions some girls did extremely well. Congratulations to the sprint relay
team for a silver at State and gold at Branch, also to the surf team for winning
bronze at State.
Finally I would like to thank the girls for their marvellous efforts, they always try their
best and have fun! Thanks also to the water safety team, Basil and my assistants
Peter and Therese.

Under Ten [10] Boys
This year we had around 43 boys, most making very regular appearances, with a
very good turnout for Waverley Shield and Branch at Elouera. We had about 10
go to State. The highlight of the year was the enthusiasm with which the boys took
to the water and how much they have developed their skills. We did several mini
oceans swims with nearly the full contingent of boys. And they all now have to be
dragged off the boards at the end of the sessions on Sundays.
The U10 Boys are all quite strong in beach events, with 6 very good runners. We
first went to the State Titles in the U8’s in 2008, where we were eliminated in the
Sprint Relay semi-finals due to disqualification for an incorrect batten change. In
2009, throughout the year, we had beaten every team except North Bondi who were
exceptional. At the State Titles we beat them in the semis and we were in a great
position to get a medal. Sadly we dropped the batten, going from 2nd to 8th position
during the race!
In 2010 the other teams were much the same as the previous years, but North
Cronulla being the standouts. We beat all teams in our semi-final, except North
Cronulla. At this stage I was quietly confident of a Bronze 3rd or 4th position at the
worst. When we came in 2nd to North Cronulla, everyone, especially the boys were
ecstatic. Finally they made it after three years. That’s perseverance!
I would like to thank my assistant Jacinta, the fantastic crew of water safety, Jason,
Toni, Jerry, Amanda, Mark, Michael, Adam, Gavin, Malcolm, Jen F, Peter, Wilbur,
and Peter and also Harries for his very special and gruelling training, as well as
Basil, Dave F, and the whole surf crew for their support.

Under Eleven [11] Girls
This summer was another great year for the “Red” Girls. Over the years their
confidence and their ability in the surf has grown and grown. This year was no
exception – just when you thought they had reached their limit they stepped up to
the next level. In this group we now have many potential future Life Savers, which is
ultimately one of the main goals of Nippers.
During the year there were many highlights: swimming from the pool and back to
the beach was a terrific effort from the girls, particularly for some who prefer to stay
safely on the sand; competing in the Bronte Junior Ocean Swim in tough conditions
– yes the girls were scared but they swam and swam well; paddling from Bronte to
Mackenzie’s and back; watching as they listened Dave Fleeting explain the basics
of resuscitation and then practicing in pairs.
But the most memorable and proudest moments were the two rounds of Club
Championships. To see all girls participate in the surf race, most in the board race
and 15 take part in the Iron Person was fantastic. It just demonstrated their growth in
confidence. This wasn’t about winning but the joy of participating, doing their best and
achieving something that for some, a few years ago, would not have been possible.
This year four girls were selected to attend the Sydney Branch Development Camp
– a reward for their consistency and dedication over the years at Nippers. On the
competition side of things we sent teams to all Carnivals and medals were won at all
levels. The girls supported each other and generally had a great time.
A big thank you to my assistants, Carrie Follas, Amy Somes and Willie Whillier!
Without their help Sundays and Carnivals would not have run as smoothly as they
did. Thank you to all the parents for their support throughout the season - with water
safety, BBQ duty, manning the attendance desk, helping on the merchandise stall
and just being there for your daughter. You helped make our job easier.

Under Eleven [11] Boys
This year will go down in the annals as one of the best for the U11 boys.
We consistently had a team of 16 young men ready to take on the conditions that
Bronte was dishing out.
As a result we had a high number of days in the surf, including swims from the
Bogey Hole around to the beach and board paddles across to Mackenzie’s. The
improvement, particularly in the swim and board paddling was clearly evident during
the season. We also spent time developing the boys Life Saving skills including
board rescues, resuscitation and discussing water conditions.
Due to the great support of both Claude and Helen, the boys excelled both at Bronte
and at the Carnivals. We thoroughly enjoyed spending time with the team each
Sunday. Thanks also goes to the parents who gave support to the boys.
For the first time the U11’s fielded teams in all the water team events at Waverley
Shield, Branch and State Championships. The boys gave a strong account of
themselves. Gold medals were won by both Lucas Anderson (State Title All Age
Relay) and Lucas Varnier (Branch Flags).
It was great to see the further development of the team spirit and the obvious
enjoyment that the boys were having participating in the team events. With a little
training over winter we will no doubt see further improvement in both the beach and
the water.
We look forward to another great year with the U12 boys in 2010/2011.

Under Twelve [12] Girls
Once again the level of participation of this group was outstanding, both week to
week on Sunday mornings and at the various carnivals we attended throughout the
season. The level of confidence of the girls has now reached a level where, despite
the group’s size, long swims out the back or a paddle round to Tamarama are
undertaken with little drama.
In competition we had a great turn out at Waverley Shield, South Maroubra,
Branch and our biggest ever team of 14 going to Swansea for the State Age
Championships. As well as finally cracking a State medal with the sprint relay team
of Charlotte, Cassie, Frances and Gabrielle winning silver, our depth was shown
with another 6 girls also competing in State finals – Meggie, Sarah, Dominica and
Molly in the Surf Teams as well as Eleanor and Bella Hunter in the R&R.
As usual the team spirit was fantastic. In particular, fielding 3 board relay teams
after about 10 hours on the beach on very long first day at Swansea and the two
Cameron relay teams at Branch, bringing the beach and water competitors together,
were highlights. Of the individual performances, Cassie deserves a special mention,
winning medals in both the Flags and Beach Sprint at Waverley Shield and Branch
and making both finals at State.
I was also very proud to see so many of the girls having a go at the Bronte Junior
Ocean Swim in challenging conditions. Well done to Meg, Charlotte, Sarah,
Dominica, Kate, Bella H, Bella P, Eleanor, Emily R, and Molly.
And a big thanks again for all the support from the parents, both with running the
group on Sundays and at carnivals and the assistance from the large contingent of
water safety. The continuing enthusiasm of this group is a credit to everyone.

Under Twelve [12] Boys
This group comprised 19 boys of various skill levels. The highlights for this year for
mine, was the overall improvement of the squad and their development of life saving
skills.
Tanner Atkins proved his all round ability by winning the Club Championship. Charlie
Kospetas was a close second and went on to claim the Iron Man title. Luke Veron
excelled in the water and Jack Needle “burned up the sand” by winning many of
the beach sprint events. Morgan Penry was our outstanding competitor and was a
worthy recipient of the Holloway prize for outstanding efforts at competition.
The mighty twins, Brendan and Lachlan Contarino joined the squad this year.
In their first year as Junior Surf Life Savers, these lads showed great tenacity,
application and tried so hard at improving their surf skills. Brendan and Lachlan

well and proved their capabilities in the tough Bronte conditions.

It was great to return to the age group after a couple of years as Youth Director. The
group was down on numbers with only 12 girls registering for the season but this
can be attributed to a greater focus on water activities.
Although the group was small I really appreciated the commitment shown by all
the girl that attended most weeks. Sara Szabo once again was a stand-out, always
being there to give it her all whether it was a normal Sunday, or at competitions.
The conditions this season allowed us to get in the water most weeks, which greatly
improved the girls swimming and paddling skills. With the water gods being so
kind it also provided a great opportunity to practice rescue skills with the board and
tube. On the odd occasion where we were kept out of the water we were able to
concentrate on resuscitation skills. This will be beneficial next year when the girls go
for their Surf Rescue Certificate.
The girls competed strongly at Waverley Shield and State. With the re-scheduling
of Branch, only Rebecca Watson was able to represent the U13 girls at Elouera.
She did us proud by winning a silver medal on the sprint track. Greta O’Brien had
another great year overall and won the Club Championship for the second year
running. Special congratulations to Maddy Bartlett who was selected as Nipper
Captain for the next season.
Next season will be the girls’ final year as nippers, and I am looking forward to
watching them gain their SRC and attend their first patrols as they move towards
becoming Life Savers.

Under Thirteen [13] Boys
The U13 boys began the season with the enthusiasm of any 13 year old boy
undertaking his eighth year of nippers. There was a sense of ground hog day as
the boys went through the motions of another season of nippers. This year we took
a back seat as the boys have now acquired better water skills than many of the
parents. In fact the core group of a dozen or so boys are now well equipped to take
on the challenge of the SRC and patrols in the 2010/11 season.
The boys enjoyed the revitalized surfing program offered by Bronte. The charge was
led by Luke Faddy and Jack Clifford, with these two boys showing the rest of us how
to catch a wave. Luke Faddy went on to win the Gold medal in U13 Surfing at the
State championships, the only individual medal won by a Bronte nipper. Not to be
outdone, Jack won the U13 surfing gold medal at Sydney Branch.
Max Hendrie represented the boys beautifully on the sand and ran an extremely
quick and strong led to help the All Age Bronte team win the Gold medal at State.
Frances Ryan commented that changing the baton with Max is like getting your
arms ripped off!! Max Hendrie, Dugald O’Neill, Matt Strain, Chris Dwyer and Matt
Milliken made up the team events at State competing in the finals of swim teams,
Cameron relay and the beach relay.
Sundays on the beach were relaxed and there was plenty of time in the water,
paddles to Tama, swims out the back and body bashing in the shories. We look
forward to the final season in nippers for this group of boys who should turn into an
impressive group of surf lifesavers. Keep an eye out for news about the SRC which
we hope to undertake at the end of Term 3 holidays. Thanks to Basil for all his work
and to all the parents who year after year continue to help this group of boys.

Under Fourteen [14] Girls
This has been the final season for the U14 Girls and in many ways it is sad to think
I won’t be seeing them every Sunday next summer, as I have for the last 8 years.
However, it has been a wonderful experience to see them all grow and develop into
mature and competent young ladies and lifesavers.
The culmination of nippers is undertaking the Surf Rescue Certificate training and
assessment, which was the focus of the first half of the season. The girls were
terrific students and applied themselves enthusiastically to
learning and training, which showed when they all successfully completed both the
theory and practical elements of the final assessment. Congratulations to all of
them and well done!! On behalf of the girls, I would particularly like to thank Reay
McGuiness for the time he put in with the girls during their SRC training. All of the
girls have since started patrols on the beach.
The remainder of the season was taken up mainly by competition at which the girls
performed strongly. We had seven girls at State, with the most pleasing results
being in the team events: finalists in the swim teams and semi-finalists in the sprint
relay.
After so many years at nippers there are many people to thank. I would like to join
the U14 Girls in thanking the following people (if I have forgotten anyone, please
forgive me): Rob Wallace, Lindsay Cotterill, Craig Bartlett and Basil Scaffidi for there
time and energy in managing nippers; Dave Fleeting, Mike Weale and all the water
safety; Col McDermid for..... (the list is too long!) Last, but certainly not least, all the
U14 Girls’ parents, particularly Stuart Ridge, Matt Tricks, Dave Cowper, Jane Ryan
and Sally Fleeting without whom I couldn’t have done the job.
I would like to wish the all girls the very best in their future endeavours and look
forward to seeing them on patrol in the coming seasons.

Under Fourteen [14] Boys
I have been fortunate enough to be involved with Junior Surf Life Saving for the past
9-10 seasons either as an age manager or a surf coach and I must say this year
has been the most pleasing.
I had the pleasure of watching these boys develop into a fine bunch of competent
young men who have excelled in the challenges this year presented to them. They
were enlightening, pleasant, with their personalities evolving as the year wore on.
Overall they were keen to improve their water skills in particular when the boys were
going through their SRC. They all showed they wanted to improve and encouraged
others to follow one another’s lead allowing them to bond into a wonderful group.
Congratulations to all the boys who competed at the Sydney Branch and NSW State
Age Championships, with Luc, Jamie, Lewis C, Will, Lewis R,
Wilbur, Jeremy and Liam who all won a medal, which again continues a wonderful
tradition of the highest level of success. Undoubtable the highlight of the season
was our State Silver medal in the board relay by, Luc, Lewis C and Jamie. A
fantastic and well deserved result, and shows the application to hard training
eventually reaps the benefits.
Also a very close finish for our beach relay team, Wilbur, Lewis C, Liam and Luc
who were beaten into 4th position by a couple of hundredths of a second. Well done
Boys. I must make mention of Lewis Carey, who after 8 years of competing and
training finally achieved a podium finish.
I would also like to thank Basil for his efforts and dedication to Bronte Nippers and
always making himself available when needed.
It has been a wonderful chapter in our lives. I hope you all have enjoyed this journey
as we have. God bless Bronte, apparently he surfs there!

I grew up at Mona Vale on the Northern
Beaches of Sydney. My local beach
was Mona Vale and Collaroy, which is
where I could be found every weekend
and sometimes after school. In the
school holidays, our family would get
in the car and head north to the Gold
Coast or Noosa and south to Ulladulla.
My younger brother Blake was also
a nipper and a really good surfer. He
is currently a snowboard instructor in
Canada. He tells me he misses the
beach.
I was 9 when I joined Collaroy Nippers
- the people there were really friendly
and fun. Swimming was and still is my
favourite activity. I love training and
racing in the ocean or pool. When not

you could find me riding my foamie
(surfboard) or body board.
At Collaroy I raced in all the water
events and represented the Northern
Beaches Branch Team 6 years in a row.
I won gold medals at the Interbranch
Titles and NSW State Titles in the age
