The Franke story began as a small sheet-metal
business in Rorschach, Switzerland,
established by Hermann Franke in 1911.

INCLUDING THE KITCHEN SINK
Visually appealing and practical, a quality stainless steel sink remains
a beautiful choice for kitchens of all styles. The popularity of stainless
steel in the kitchen has led to a broad range of choices at every price
point leading many to assume all stainless steel sinks are created equal.
When considering a stainless steel sink, factors including the quality of
the stainless steel used, the way the sink is constructed and its design
can dramatically impact your satisfaction over the years.
Many who demand the highest quality elsewhere in their homes overlook
the importance of what lies beneath the surface of a stainless steel sink.
Just because a sink is made of stainless steel, doesn’t mean it will hold
up to the test of time with the same effortless grace of a Franke sink.
The beauty of a Franke sink is more than skin deep. Franke sinks are
made with high grade stainless steel (see Why Franke Stainless Steel
on page 9) that far surpasses the quality and durability of lower cost
alternatives. The proper mix of chromium and nickel leads to stainless
steel that is less likely to rust, whereas lower grade steel used in other
sinks are prone to rust over time.
BENEATH THE SURFACE STAINLESS STEEL SINKS CAN BE
VERY DIFFERENT
Gauge, or thickness of the stainless steel, is also important consideration.
Just as the quality of the stainless steel can vary greatly, the thickness
of the steel used also differs vastly between manufacturers. Residential
stainless steel sinks often range from 23 gauge to 16 gauge, with 16
gauge being the thickest. Most Franke sinks are 18 gauge which is a
popular gauge offering durability and sound dampening qualities. While
a thinner gauge may appear the same on the surface, it can lead to
excessive noise when water is running.
If quality and construction are the most overlooked factors, design is the
most underappreciated in the sink selection process. Many select sinks
based simply on size or bowl configuration without considering the
aesthetic differences and functionality that can be gained through
finding the right stainless steel sink.
Functionality should be a key consideration when selecting a sink since
it will be used every day for the life of your kitchen. How a sink looks
can impact how it functions. Some prefer the contemporary look of
sharp corners in a sink while others prefer rounded corners that are
easy to clean. Large cookware requires greater sink depth while raising
the working area with an integral shelf and grid system can help you
prep more ergonomically. How you prep, cook and clean up should all
be considered in the sink selection process. From double bowls and
apron front sinks to restaurant-style single bowls or accessory sinks,
Franke has nearly limitless styles and configurations so you can find the

There are a number of considerations to take into account when choosing a sink.
Not only should it accentuate the overall look and feel of your kitchen, but also there
are installation and functionality options to take into account. Another vital element
to consider is the way your sink physically fits into the heart of your kitchen.
INSTALLATION TYPE
UNDERMOUNT
Particularly pleasing when combined with granite, quartz, wood or solid
surface worktops, undermount sinks allow for smooth, uninterrupted
surfaces. Fitted underneath the work surface, it gives an edgeless
finish that is easy to clean and is perfectly integrated into the kitchen
environment.
APRON FRONT
The quintessential choice for a stylish, hardworking kitchen, it’s no
wonder that the Apron Front sink is enjoying a renaissance. They are
easy to clean, resistant to stains, provide a large washing bowl area
and are an ecologically friendly choice. These sinks work with both
contemporary and traditional design.

STAINLESS STEEL
Easy to clean, resists heat very well, variety of styles and shapes and
very durable.
SINGLE BOWL
A single bowl sink is ideal for handling large
pots. Single bowl sinks can come in a variety
of sizes, ideal for limited space or large
spaces and can be used as the main sink or
as a kitchen island sink. Single bowl sinks
can provide a simple yet attractive design.
FIRECLAY
Very good stain resistance, different colors available, good heat
resistance.
DOUBLE BOWL
Larger sinks provide more space and have
additional options. These sinks offer a great
flexibility in the kitchen, such as having one
bowl for washing and one for rinsing dishes,
or one bowl can be used for food prep, while
the other is used for dirty dishes.
TRIPLE BOWL
A triple bowl sink is ideal for someone who
needs to manage several sink tasks at once.
It offers some flexibility, although the bowls
are sometimes much smaller.
CABINET SIZE
BOWL DEPTH
The length and depth of the cabinet, on top of which the sink will be
located, are the factors that determine the maximum size of an installed
sink. A new sink should have exterior length and depth dimensions
several inches less than the cabinet.
Normal depth usually ranges from 7-9 inches. A deeper bowl can more
easily accommodate the use of large pots and cookware but a user’s
height should be considered. A shallower bowl might provide greater
comfort while working in and reaching to the bottom of the sink. Depth
can also be inhibited by accessories under the sink like a garbage
disposal, recycling bin, etc.

WHY FRANKE
FIRECLAY
SINKS
Due to the nature of the fireclay manufacturing process,
each sink will vary dimensionally. For this reason, no cut out
templates are supplied. To ensure a proper fit between the
sink and the cabinet, and any supporting framing, Franke
recommends providing the cabinet maker with the actual
sink to be installed.
Each sink is tested to stringent tolerance guidelines using regularly
calibrated testing equipment, which detects the actual size of the
pieces, faucet hole sizes, impurities and deformations.
Quality control assures that there is no over formation, that the
surfaces are smooth, with no hairline cracks and ensures correct angles
and shapes. Technological precision in the manufacturing of these sinks
allows the Franke product to have thinner and sleeker walls, as
opposed to the chunkier proportions in some other fireclay sink
products. The desired outcome is highly dependent on an accurate
and exact production process which includes the highest quality raw
materials, water content, exposure to temperatures and handling by
people. Franke product comes from state-of-the art production
facilities.
For undermount sinks, the unglazed mounting rim is ground flat to
ensure a perfect fit in the countertop. Premium finishing guarantees
even surfaces for optimum fitting and perfect sealing and individual
pieces are ground with rotating disks in a wet polishing operation
to assure a perfectly leveled installation surface. The sink is then
carefully packed to prevent damage during transport.
FRANKE FIRECLAY SINKS
ARE ALL HANDCRAFTED
Many Franke fireclay sinks are created by the respected and
world-renowned firm of Villeroy & Boch, which has been making fine
ceramic creations for over 260 years. Still a family-owned business,
Villeroy & Boch has served as Royal and Imperial Porcelains
Manufacturer for royalty and aristocrats for centuries, as well as
becoming popular with the present-day consumers due to the quality
of their beautiful and distinctive designs.
HOW FIRECLAY IS MADE
Fireclay begins with a liquid ceramic mixture called ‘Slip’, which is
comprised of quartz, china clay or ball clay (kaolinite) and chamotte
(a ceramic raw material consisting of silica and alumina) which is
injected into porous plaster molds at high pressure. Much attention
is paid to the quality of the raw materials and the purity of all
components is strictly controlled. The cleanliness of the machinery and
tools is crucial to the outcome, as well as controlling of the levels of
humidity and consistency of the temperatures during the process.
The sink is then fired for 20 hours in a tunnel kiln at 2,200 degrees
Fahrenheit before the craftsman makes the last of numerous
inspections as the sink is completed.
THE CERAMICPLUS®/FRANKE PLUS ADVANTAGE
Franke fireclay sinks have a high quality finish so that water flows off,
leaving practically no residue whatsoever, for optimum hygiene. The
finish is known as Ceramicplus for all Franke by Villeroy & Boch and
Franke Plus for our other fireclay sinks. These finishes are not just a
surface application, but rather a post-firing treatment in the production
process which provides our sinks with an incredibly smooth surface.
This discourages particles of dirt from adhering to the sink so they are
simply rinsed away. If any dirt does happen to remain behind, it's not a
problem because the finish also makes the sinks much easier to clean.
Only a standard all-purpose cleaner and kitchen sponge with a soft or
rough surface are needed for regular cleaning. Scouring powder should
be avoided as this may adversely affect the surface.

glazing, the product is assessed for visual damages and imperfections
on the surfaces before being handed over to the next phase of

LOW LEAD BRASS
At Franke, we believe in safety and quality without compromise. All
Franke faucets are made of low lead brass, an alloy of copper and zinc.
While some manufacturers have added lead in low concentrations to
enhance the machinability of brass, Franke has used only low lead
brass in our faucets to avoid any concerns about possible lead leaching
into your drinking water. Our high standard for low lead brass is now a
requirement for all faucets sold in the United States.
CERAMIC
Franke faucets use ceramic discs, the highest quality valve type
available today. Ceramic discs provide a superior seal, longer valve
life and exceptional ease of use. Unlike cartridges that use rubber
in the waterway, ceramic discs are precisely manufactured to have
tight tolerances between discs with diamond-like hardness—they
are impervious to line debris, mineral buildups, and other common
problems that affect valve life.
Ceramic discs last much longer due to their high wear resistance
and durability. They also offer very precise, ergonomic control.
Franke faucets with ceramic discs are an excellent choice for
people with arthritis; even a child can easily turn a Franke faucet
off and on.
COMPONENT TESTING
Even the best components must be thoroughly tested to ensure
consistent quality and adherence to environmental regulations.
Franke faucets undergo a rigorous three-week testing sequence to
meet the National Sanitation Foundation 61(NSF61) regulation,
which limits contaminants in drinking water, applies to kitchen
faucets, lavatory faucets and drinking water dispensers. By meeting
this standard, Franke is allowed to display the NSF Mark on the
product signifying NSF Certification. All Franke faucets are
manufactured under the supervision and testing of local and
international standard maximum allowable levels established in
ANSI/NSF Standard 61. If all contaminant levels of the product
meet the requirements of the Standard, the product can be certified.
Only then is the manufacturer allowed to display the NSF Mark on
the product signifying NSF Certification.
MANUFACTURING
Outstanding design and quality components come together beautifully during
the Franke manufacturing process. Our facilities use state-of-the-art
processes and equipment while following strict environmental protection
guidelines as part of our corporate philosophy regarding sustainability and the
environment. Strict adherence to Franke manufacturing standards in forming,
finishing and final assembly achieve the exceptional quality and durability that
makes a Franke faucet one of the most desired additions to a kitchen.
FORMING
Every faucet is made up of many individual components. The main components
of Franke faucets are the body, spouts and spray heads. All components are
constructed of low lead brass, or in limited instances of stainless steel,
providing improved endurance, durability and superior resistance to corrosion
over plastics and zinc alloys that many of our competitors use.
The initial shaping of the components is done through one or more of the
following processes: a permanent mold casting process, a hot forging
process, or a Computer Numerical Control (CNC) milling process. The
manufacturing process is selected based on the requirements for each
component. After initial shaping, the faucet components are precisely
machined and ground into the final required size and dimensions.
FINISHING
After machining, most faucet parts will undergo a final finishing process
comprised of one or more of the following:
Plating – Depending on the desired color and finish, precise coatings of
electroplated metals are applied through specialized chemical baths that
contain specific additives to improve the performance and durability of the
finish and control the exact color of the parts.
Coating – Some parts require additional coatings after plating, or as an
alternative to plating, for the desired appearance, color or performance
characteristics of the parts. Epoxy powder coating allows for complex colors
and living finishes like Franke’s Old World Bronze; it also is much thicker,
more evenly distributed and more durable than conventional liquid coatings.
Physical Vapor Deposition (PVD) coating uses highly specialized equipment
to deposit thin films of vaporized materials onto the faucet parts for an almost
indestructible, corrosion and abrasion resistant finish.
POLISHING & BUFFING – Most external Franke faucet components receive
polishing or buffing to achieve the final finish. Depending on the selected
finish and the complexity of the parts, a combination of manual and
automated polishing processes is employed to attain the final Franke finish.
FINAL ASSEMBLY
After all individual components are fully assembled into the finished Franke
faucet, final clean up and testing is required. All Franke faucets are water and
pressure tested after assembly to ensure 100% quality is achieved. Before
packaging, all faucets undergo an additional final inspection to ensure each
faucet meets Franke’s exacting standards.

Franke kitchen faucets are in compliance with CALGreen Standards,
with a flow rate of 1.75 gpm or 1.5 gpm (gallon per minute), compared
to the Industry Standard ASME.A112.18.1/CSA.B125.1 of 2.2 gpm.
Handle Types
• Single handle (top or side position): controls flow and
temperature mix with one handle.
• Two handle (bridge or 3-hole): separate controls for hot and
cold temperatures.

• 1-hole: Often installed in granite or solid surface counter tops.

COMPONENTS
Cartridges
Other faucet manufacturers use a variety of materials for their
cartridges including rubber parts which can degrade. Franke uses only
ceramic disc cartridges that are the highest quality valves available on
the market today. They provide superior function and durability and
offer precise ergonomic control.
Ceramic cartridge for single handle faucets:
Standard size is 35mm. Limited Lifetime Warranty,
with easy exchange if needed. Smooth and easy
function of on/off and temperature mixing.
Ceramic cartridge for 2 handle faucets:
45 degree turn for opening, compared to normal
270 degree regular cartridge opening.
Check Valves
A double check valve is required in all pull-out spray types to prevent
backflow of water. Franke pull-out and pull-down kitchen faucets are
equipped with 1 Check Valve plus 1 Check
Valve/Flow Regulator. This complies with the
standard requirement while the Flow Restricted
Check Valve provides a maximum flow of 1.75 gpm.

Franke offers a limited lifetime warranty on manufacturing defects on

Low Lead Requirement
All Franke faucets meet the requirements of
the Federal Safe Drinking Water Act, and the
requirements of the NSF372, and NSF61 lead

system is a straightforward, convenient way to make sure that there’s just H2O in your
glass and no unexpected little “extras.” Whether the goal is to achieve better tasting

POU FILTRATION
Our filtration products fall into a category known as Point-of-Use or
POU filtration systems. What this means is that water is being filtered
immediately before it is dispensed, or just before it flows from the
tap. A filter housing containing a filter cartridge is plumbed directly
into the water line below your kitchen counter. Filtered water is then
dispensed as it is needed from a separate faucet adjacent to the
kitchen sink. These faucets are commonly referred to as both POU
faucets or dispensing heads.
