Chinese university to research parts manufacturing...
irbus has formed a new
partnership in China
through which it plans
to investigate the possibility of
using 3D printing technology to
manufacturer aircraft parts.
The new cooperation
agreement between Airbus and
the North Western Polytechnical
University (NPU), in China's
aerospace hub of X'ian, will see
the two parties explore ways of
using 3D laser printing in the
commercial aviation sector.
NPU will manufacture test
titanium alloy parts for Airbus
using its 'Laser Solid Forming'
technology. These parts will then
be assessed by Airbus, with a view
to using them within its aircraft in
future.
"We are pleased to have been
selected by Airbus... as a partner
to carry out the pilot project to
explore ways of applying 3D
printing technology in commercial
aviation,” said NPU president,
Weng Zhiqian. “This project
is a test for our 3D research
capability and we are confident
we will deliver satisfactory results
on quality and on time that will
establish a solid foundation for
further cooperation in this field.”
Airbus said it is exploring the
use of 3D printing technology to
manufacture individual parts or
even larger airframe structures for
the company’s aircraft. It is also
planning to use 3D printing as a
means of producing cost-effective
spare parts for out-of-production
aircraft.
The company said 3D printing
technology could "transform the
manufacturing of airplane parts".
As well as being potentially
cheaper, components could be

Despite many media reports
focusing on the controversial
development of firearms, 3D
printing is already being utilised
by a variety
of industries,
including the
healthcare and
automotive
sectors. And UKbased aerospace company, BAE
Systems, has already used 3D
printing to manufacture parts for its
Tornado fighter jets.

ustralia is now leading
the search for the missing
Malaysia Airlines jet, after the
focus of the investigation appeared to
shift south yesterday.
Based on satellite signals,
Malaysian authorities previously
said they were focusing their search
efforts on two broad arcs - one
stretching northwest from Thailand to
Kazakhstan, and the other travelling
south, through Indonesian airspace
and into the Indian Ocean, west of
Perth.
But officials in Kazakhstan
yesterday issued a statement
dismissing the chance the aircraft
travelled all the way from Southeast
Asia, across China and into Central
Asia, without being spotted.
"Even if all onboard equipment
is switched off, it is impossible to fly
through in a silent mode," said the
Kazakh Civil Aviation Committee's
deputy head, Serik Mukhtybayev.
"There are also military bodies
monitoring the country's air space."
This means the most likely
possibility is that the aircraft turned
back and flew south, over the
Indonesian islands of Sumatra or
Java, and on into the Indian Ocean.
Australia's Prime Minister Tony
Abbot confirmed yesterday that
he has spoken to his Malaysian
counterpart, Najib Razak, and agreed
to lead the southern search.
"I agreed that we would do so. I
offered the Malaysian Prime Minister
additional maritime surveillance
resources which he gratefully
accepted," Abbot was quoted saying
by the Sydney Morning Herald. "We
will do our duty to ensure that our
search and rescue responsibilities are
maintained and upheld," he added.
It is still unclear how the Boeing
777 managed to evade detection
while flying over Indonesian airspace,
but Malaysia's New Straits Times
reports that investigators are looking
at the possibility that the aircraft
dropped to an altitude of 5,000
feet (1,524 metres) to avoid radar
detection. If true, this would increase
the likelihood that MH370 was
deliberately flown off course.
It emerged yesterday that first
officer Fariq Abdul Hamid spoke the
last words to air traffic controllers,
prior to leaving Malaysian air space.
The co-pilot is reported to have
said "All right, good night" before
the aircraft disappeared from radar
screens. Police have searched the
homes of both pilots, and were
reported to have dismantled a flight
simulator at the home of captain
Zaharie Ahmad Shah, although it is
unclear whether anything suspicious

Located in the ancient town
of Fuli, which is famous for its
traditional painted fans, Banyan Tree
Yangshuo will offer visitors access
to the picturesque landscape of
limestone 'sugarloaf' hills and
winding rivers. According to Banyan

in the style of a "modern village

Banyan Tree Yangshuo will be
located one hour's drive from Guilin
Liangjiang International Airport
and 15 minutes from the town of
Yangshuo.
The Li River in Yangshuo
was found.
Malaysia said the investigation had
entered a "new phase".
"The search was already a highly
complex, multinational effort. It has
now become even more difficult," the
country's acting transport minister,
Hishammuddin Hussein, said in a
press briefing.
"The search area has been
significantly expanded and the nature
of the search has changed. From
focusing mainly on shallow seas, we
are now looking at large tracts of land,
crossing 11 countries, as well as deep
and remote oceans.
"We will provide more detail on
the redeployment of assets when it
becomes available," he added.

Airport's new low-cost carrier
hub, KLIA 2, will open on 2 May
2014, despite the presence of
cracks in the tarmac, Malaysia's
acting transport minister has said.
Malaysia's Bernama news
agency reported Hishammuddin
Hussein as saying that "minor"
cracks had been uncovered in an
independent inspection of KLIA
2, and these will be fixed prior to
opening.
The evaluation was carried out by
independent consultancy firm, Ikram
Premier Consulting (IPC).
"In IPC's evaluation, which
focused on safety aspects of the
taxiway, apron, runway and the
surrounding areas, they stated that
there were no cracks on the runway,
only minor ones on the taxiway," the
acting minister was quoted saying in
KL on Monday.
"As for the surrounding areas, it
was found there was land sinking in
some places and these too needed
to be rectified although they did not
pose any safety risk to the airport's
users," he added.
IPC will now conduct a second
evaluation of KLIA2 on 14 April
2014.
"That is three weeks before the
opening of KLIA2 so as to ensure
safety aspects at the runway,
taxiway and parking apron are up
to the mark," Bernama reported
Hishammuddin as saying.
KLIA 2 was originally due to
open in May 2013 but has been
beset with problems. Once open
it will replace the existing LCCT
and provide a permanent home
to AirAsia and other low-cost
carriers.
Guests visiting Universal
Orlando will soon be able to
board the legendary Harry
Potter train, the Hogwarts
Express. The attraction has
revealed details about new
experience that will form part
of 'The Wizarding World of
Harry Potter' themed zone,
which opens this summer. The train will connect the various areas
of the Harry Potter land, including Diagon Alley and Hogsmeade.
Once seated, passengers will see a range of characters, including
Hagrid on his flying motorbike and the Weasley twins on their
broomsticks.
Hawaiian Airlines adds
domestic flights
Hawaiian Airlines has
added two new inter-island
connections and announced
plans to add more capacity to
destinations in California. A
new service between Honolulu
and Molokai commenced last
week and will be followed
today by a new service to
Lanai. In addition, Hawaiian has brought forward the launch
date of its new daily Maui-Los Angeles service to 2 May, and
announced that it will resume daily Honolulu-San Jose services
from 16 May. Finally, the airline will deploy its larger Airbus A330
on the Honolulu-Oakland route.
Holiday Inn adds island resort
in Georgia
IHG has signed a new
Holiday Inn Resort on Jekyll

Georgia. Spread across a
large plot of beachfront land,
the property was previously
operated independently as
the Oceanside Inn and Suites,
and will join the Holiday
Inn portfolio later this year after it completes a US$20 million
programme of renovations. Once open, it is expected to have 157
rooms, including 40 suites, plus multiple F&B venues, an outdoor
pool, children's club, fitness centre, business centre and 930m² of
meeting space.
SAS loss narrows
Air Canada adds new Vegas flight
S
candinavian Airlines (SAS)
improved its financial results
for the November-January quarter,
but still suffered a loss for the
period. The net loss of SEK112
million (US$17.5m) marked a
significant improvement from
the SEK588m deficit the airline
suffered in the corresponding
period last year. It also marked
a considerable achievement for
SAS' restructuring programme.
The airline's quarterly revenues
fell 18% to SEK7.87 billion, but
SAS also managed to reduce its
costs, which led to the improved
net result.
Looking forward, SAS said it
still expects to post positive EBIT
(earnings before interest and tax)
for the full-year. The restructuring
programme is expected to cost
SAS SEK1.2bn. Click here for

M

Air Arabia, has launched a
new route to Kazakhstan. Services
to the southern city of Shymkent,
close to the border with Uzbekistan,
commenced on Saturday and
will now operate twice a week
(Wednesdays and Saturdays),
direct from the airline's home base
of Sharjah in the UAE. Shymkent
becomes Air Arabia's third
destination in Kazakhstan, following
the capital Astana and largest city
Almaty.
A
ir Astana has experienced a
decline in its full-year profits,
as Kazakhstan’s currency issues
impacted the carrier. The airline
generated net profit of US$51.4
million in 2013, 15.7% lower than
the previous year, despite a 10.5%
jump in revenues, to US$967m.
And Air Astana said it would have
generated higher profits had it not
been for the impact of a one-off
revenue adjustment in 2012 and
currency exchange loss in 2013.
The Kazakh carrier’s president,
Peter Foster, said the devaluation of
the Kazakh tengue would continue
to have a negative effect on Air
Astana's 2014 results.
“Approximately two thirds of
our revenue is earned in tengue
whereas our costs are largely in US
dollars, so there will be a hit both to
the balance sheet and to the market
