This Advent will be a special one because it marks the beginning of the Holy Year of Mercy. The Holy Year of Mercy actually begins on December 8, 2015—the Feast of the Immaculate Conception and the 50th anniversary of the closing of the Second Vatican Council. What is important is that we take seriously receiving and sharing God’s mercy as much as we can this year. We can do this by: Going to the Sacrament of Reconciliation or Confession regularly. This Sacrament is the doorway to God’s mercy. Celebrating Mass every Sunday, if not daily. Learning and practicing the Corporal Works of Mercy: feed the hungry; give drink to the thirsty; clothe the naked; shelter the homeless; visit the sick; ransom the captive; and bury the dead. Learning and practicing the Spiritual Works of Mercy: instruct the ignorant; counsel the doubtful; admonish sinners; bear wrongs patiently; forgive offences willingly; comfort the afflicted; and pray for the living and the dead. Praying the Chaplet of the Divine Mercy every day. I pray that our compassionate God bless you with his divine mercy in a special way during this holy year. Yours in Christ, Fr. Joseph Shea ANNOUNCEMENTS: Today, First Sunday of Advent: The celebr ation of the Sacr ament of the Anointing of the Sick at all Mass. Monday, December 7, Vigil Mass 5:30pm; Tuesday, December 8: 6:00, 8:30am, 12:00noon, 5:30 and 7:00pm (Spanish) The parish will be producing a calendar, listing all the events by which we hope to celebrate and experience the Mercy of God in our lives in this coming year. Stay tuned. The Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick will be offered TODAY Sunday, November 29 at all the Masses. Who should receive this sacrament? The Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick is given to those who are seriously ill, advanced in age or prior to a serious operation. Please remember to receive any Sacrament worthily...a person must be in the state of grace. If needed, please go to confession in preparation for this Sacrament. Also, this Sacrament is reserved for those who are chronically ill, have serious illness, or who are going into surgery soon, or who are senior citizens, or who struggle with drug or alcohol problems or battle extreme depression or other mental problems. Is any one among you sick? Let him bring in the presbyters [priests] of the Church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer of faith will save the sick man, and the Lord will raise him up, and if he be in sins, they shall be forgiven him. Is not too late to enroll...our next session will be on Thursday, December 13. The conflicts of the early Christians in Corinth are in many ways similar to our struggles today as Christians. They, too, witnessed division, scandal, immorality, persecution and other trials. In response, St. Paul taught the Corinthians about the Church as the Body of Christ, introducing them to the most powerful gift of all: the Eucharist. Join us for the Bible study of First Corinthians at St. Rose of Lima School in room 8 at 7:00pm and continuing every Thursday. For more information or to register for the study, please contact Dr. Neil Fanning, DDS, facilitator, at: [email protected] Why are some RCIA participants dismissed in the middle of the Mass? This Sunday, at one of the morning Masses, those adults and children preparing to be baptized into the Catholic Church, and those preparing for full communion will be dismissed at the end of the Liturgy of the Word. This will continue each Sunday until Easter when, at the Easter Vigil, those who are ready will join us at the Table of the Eucharist for the first time. The parish is not sending them out because they are somehow “unworthy” to stay for the Liturgy of the Eucharist. Though they cannot yet come to the table of the Eucharist, Mother Church still has an obligation to feed those who have entered into a relationship with her through the Rite of Acceptance and Welcoming which was celebrated recently. God’s Word is their only food during this period. Instead, the participants depart from the Mass with one or more RCIA team members, to discuss the Mass readings for that Sunday and to experience more fully the impact of the Scriptures in their lives. This time is known as “Reflection on the Word.” “A ll Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the one who belongs to God may be complete, equipped for every good work.” (2 Timothy 3:16-17) News from the Italian Catholic Federation - - - - - It’s an ICF Pot Luck Christmas Party! Take a time out to communicate Sometimes, kids need a place to go where they can say what they want, and they won’t be immediately punished or have to deal with a negative reaction. It’s important to make sure your child has such a space or time – after dinner conversations, an ice cream spot, riding home from school – where they can tell you what’s on their mind, good or bad, and you can just listen and discuss, without taking the instant parental approach. If your children feel safe talking to you openly, you are better equipped to notice and handle any red flags in their lives. For a copy of the VIRTUS® article “Modeling Good Communication,” email: [email protected].
