Spot the Stranger
Entry forms are on page 52 in this programme and from
the Tourist Information Centre, Staithe Street
The shops in Wells have dressed their windows for
Carnival Week, but they’ve added something which
shouldn’t be there. Can you find all 40 strangers? Look
for the stickers in shop windows.
Remember that the thing you’re spotting is in
the shop window – don’t go into the shop and
ask the person behind the counter what the
‘stranger’ is. Please respect the shopkeepers
and keep your spotting to the outside!
Sponsored by Admiral House B&B
History Walks Round Wells
Monday to Friday, local historians Tom Sands and Terry
Whiddett lead a different walk around the town. There

We are again indebted to David Jagger Ltd, Chemists who offers a
fantastic Carnival photo service. Our photographer (say “hi” to Cy!) will
be at events throughout the week, snapping away cheerfully. The
resulting photos can be viewed, sometimes within minutes, on the
computer inside the shop and you’ll have the opportunity to purchase
your favourites. Photos can also be viewed and purchased via

an event on the day.

At many events our Carnival merchandise gazebo will

items. These are all sold at reasonable prices and

We aim to recycle as much as possible during

any help you give us clearing the venues of rubbish
at the end of the night.

Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church
It gives me great pleasure to welcome you all to the 2016 Wells
Carnival. The committee has been very busy planning a funpacked week that we are sure will appeal to all ages and tastes. The
committee is confident that whether you are a local or a visitor
you are sure to find lots of great entertainment throughout the
week. The town has enjoyed a fantastic start to the year – the
weather could have been warmer but you can guarantee sunshine
in Carnival week.
I would like to thank all the local businesses, groups, organisations and individuals for their continuing support, without which
the Committee would not be able to put on Carnival Week. There
is a page-full of ‘Thanks’ at the end of this programme (page 62)
to show our appreciation to everyone who has given time, money,
help and support. If we’ve missed anyone off we are sincerely
sorry – we couldn’t do it without you! Please support the businesses and groups throughout the week as a thank you for their
support. They are all part of the amazing Wells community that
punches way above its weight in events and community support.
With the refurbishment of The Maltings and the Granary
Theatre we have had to change our venue for our inside events.
The committee has very kindly been given the use of the Gordon
Barrett Memorial Hall and side lawn, where you will see a marquee ready to welcome visitors to the events. Live Music will
continue on the Buttlands and Recreation Field (Football Field).
We advise all dog owners to leave their dogs at home if attending
these evening events.
The Carnival Committee meets regularly to organise the events
on offer this week and I would like to take this opportunity to
thank all the members of the Committee for their time and effort
throughout the year and especially during the week. I would also
like to thank their families for being so understanding about the
time this has taken and for giving us their support.
New for this year, three local lads have joined us to form a
Junior Committee and they will be running a tuck shop for
The Buttlands, Wells next the Sea
Carnival week is great fun, but sometimes we just need a five minute rest to gather ourselves and our thoughts.
You are welcome to come and enjoy some peace and quiet in the Roman Catholic church, Our Lady Star of the Sea.
Our door is open to all for rest, quietness, contemplation. All are welcome, there are no assumptions and no strings
attached. Our house is your house, so come and enjoy.

keep up to and
and at each of these
date
events the committee will
be organising bucket collections to go
towards the costs of the week. Most events are partly sponsored
and the committee is always trying to raise more money to cover
the shortfall. Your help is always needed and appreciated. If you
see us at an event please pop some money in the buckets, at the
merchandising gazebo ‘Donating Station’ or donate on line. Please
check the website – www.wellscarnival.co.uk We understand that
in the current climate this is not easy but any loose change you
can give will be gratefully received.
Each year the costs rise for putting on our Carnival; higher
insurance, health and safety, storage and so many running costs
before the week even starts so if you are able to make any
donation it is very greatly appreciated. The money collected
before, during and after the week will go towards these running
costs. All the money collected on Carnival Day during the parade
will be donated to local charities and good causes at our AGM.
Please give generously whenever you see a pink bucket.
Many thanks to the Holkham Estate for overseeing additional
parking on the Pitch & Putt area off Beach Road at this busy time.
Holkham has also kindly offered to donate the proceeds from this
car park to Carnival funds.
I hope you have a great week and enjoy all the events. See you
there!
Patrick Weston, Chair, Wells Carnival
WANT TO VOLUNTEER?

August we will be organising next year’s event and we would love to see you – a pink polo shirt is waiting for you! We meet on the second
Tuesday of each month at the Edinburgh Inn on Station Road at 7.30pm. For more information call Patrick on 07771 874997 or contact

Naughty Postcards
A talk by The Rev. Paul Martin with afternoon tea
Methodist Church, Theatre Road • 2.30pm
Tickets £6 – phone 01328 711931
This talk on Naughty Postcards – inevitably illustrated! – outlines some of the
devices employed by their creators, looks at attitudes to women, men and
people in positions of authority and contrasts attitudes to humour now and
then. We attempt to trace changes in society which are reflected in the
artwork, linking them in to significant historical events.

WELLS CHRISTMAS TIDE FESTIVAL 2016
If you’re reading this while
watching the brightly coloured
carnival floats amble past, or
sipping from a glass of wine
while enjoying one of the great
live shows on The Buttlands,
then Christmas will seem a
long, long way away.
But please take a minute to
memorise this date and pop it
in your diary – Saturday 3rd
December, 2016. That’s the day of this year’s Wells
Christmas Tide Festival, one of the most eagerly
awaited events in the town’s annual social calendar.
The fun starts at 10am when a host of street entertainment begins all over the town, including the Norwich Samba Band, the Thundermental street
performers and the Ukulele Elves. Street buskers are
also being invited to play at pitches around the town
and there will be gift stalls on the Health Centre car
park and along Staithe Street.
If you would like to book a pitch please contact Mel
Catton at Mr C’s or email mel@wellschristmastide-
festival.co.uk
Things will start to feel really
festive at 5pm with the traditional turning on of the town’s
Christmas Lights by BBC Look
East husband and wife presenters David Whiteley and Amelia
Reynolds.
This will be followed by the
traditional lantern parade
down Staithe Street to The
Quay where the crowds will assemble in readiness for
Santa’s arrival by boat, the opening of his grotto and a
fantastic fireworks display.
On Sunday 4th December the Coastal Chorale will
lead a carol-singing session on the quayside.
A number of fundraising events will be taking
place in the run-up to December, including a supper
at The Crown Hotel.
For details of events ‘like’ www.facebook.com/
xmastide on Facebook, follow @WellsXmasTide
on Twitter and keep an eye on The Quay and the local
press.
