FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT
November 29, 2015
First Sunday of Advent
Brothers and sisters, on this first Sunday of
Advent, we begin the church’s new liturgical year.
This season is a season of hope, and this year Pope
Francis has urged the whole church to celebrate a
year of mercy. What could be more hopeful than
that? Our readings remind us that when things
look darkest, there is hope for those whose hope is
waning. Not only are we encouraged to be hopeful,
but we are to be alert for something to happen.
Hope and be ready! Jesus will come!
As we enter this time of hope and mercy, we
remember all those throughout the world who
need our prayers.
For the church: that we may bring courage to all
who are in need of encouragement ... in this time
of hope and mercy, we pray,
For those who keep us alert to opportunities for
peace, justice and love in our world, our
neighborhoods and our homes ... in this time of
hope and mercy, we pray,
For the ability to read the true signs of the times in
the cacophony of 24/7 media onslaught, conflicting
opinions and personal attacks ... in this time of
hope and mercy, we pray,
For the motivation to stay alert when we are tired,
discouraged, worn out ... in this time of hope and
mercy, we pray,
For those whose lives force them to be hyper-alert
because of fear, violence or desperation ... in this
time of hope and mercy, we pray,
For all who have lost hope; for those who have no
one to support or encourage them, especially
children, the elderly, the truly poor, the
forgotten ... in this time of hope and mercy, we
pray,
For the sick, the dying and the grieving among us;
for those who have died ... in this time of hope and
mercy, we pray,
PRAYER:
God of hope and mercy, it is hard to stay hopeful
when times seem dark in our lives and in the
world. Strengthen our hearts so that we may be
ready for Jesus, who never fails to come to us as
promised. We pray in his holy name. Amen.

1st Sunday of Advent
Families make all kinds of plans. We have
emergency plans, long range plans, financial
plans, and plans for vacation. We plan college
choices and how to pay tuition, career decisions
and getting a good job, and we even make plans to
rehab our homes. So, what about spiritual plans?
Does your family ever make plans to start, build,
enhance or grow in your spiritual life? Even in
religious families, faith and religion are not often
discussed. Questions are left unanswered and,
apart from talking about which Mass we will go
to, people rarely discuss their beliefs, thoughts or
goals when it comes to spirituality. Religion and
faith are best taught in the home where people can
be free to discuss ideas, ask questions, and learn
the family customs, traditions, and beliefs.
This Advent is a great time to make a spiritual
plan for your family. It is never too late to begin
something new, or to establish a new tradition.
Decide how you will celebrate Advent: praying
together at home; using an Advent wreath;
participating in daily Mass; going to confession;
working for the poor; practicing the Works of
Mercy; learning more about your faith. Share your
beliefs and spiritual practices with each other.
Whatever it is, plan well. The soul you save just
might be your very own!

Blessing of an Advent Wreath
The use of the Advent Wreath is a traditional
practice which has found its place in the
Church as well as in the home. The blessing
of an Advent Wreath takes place on the First
Sunday of Advent or on the evening before
the First Sunday of Advent.
Customarily
the
Advent
Wreath
is
constructed of a circle of evergreen
branches into which are inserted four
candles.
According to tradition, three
candles are violet and the fourth is rose.
The candles represent the four weeks of
Advent, and the number of candles lighted
each week corresponds to the number of the
current week of Advent. The rose candle is
lighted on the Third Sunday of Advent, also
known as Gaudete Sunday.
When the blessing of the Advent Wreath is
celebrated in the home, it is appropriate that
it be blessed by a parent .
All make the sign of the cross as the
leader says:
Reader: The Word of the Lord.
R
/
Thanks be to God.
With hands joined, the leader says:
Lord our God,
We praise you for your Son, Jesus Christ:
he is Emmanuel, the hope of the peoples,
he is the wisdom that teaches and guides us,
he is the Savior of every nation.
Lord God,
let your blessing come upon us
as we light the candles of this wreath.
May the wreath and its light
be a sign of Christ’s promise to bring us
salvation.
May he come quickly and not delay.
We as this through Christ our Lord

FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT
“...Levantai-vos e erguei a cabeça.”
I Dom do Advento (Ano C): – Jeremias 33,14- 16; Salmo 25(24); 1Tess 3,12-4,2; Lucas 21,25-28.34-36
necessário permanecer vigilantes e preparados (cf. vv.34-36), como o povo do êxodo
A vigilância e a oração
todas as pessoas.

sejamos verdadeiramente servidoras e servidores teus!
Por Cristo, nosso Senhor. Amém.
