2007 Product Guide Advancing Tradition. 1898 Winter 1898 George Gray hires A.E. Wickett to make some of the first canvas covered cedar canoes in the back of the Gray Hardware store on North Main Street. Old Town Canoe and Kayak… November 1914 Plans are completed for second major expansion. Four-story brick building 300’ long, will make Old Town Canoe Co. the largest factory in the world. March 1910 Old Town Canoe acquires Carleton Canoe. Carleton batteaux, used in the logging industry, added to line. Old Town, ME boasts itself as the Canoe Center of the World. 3,500 canoes are built locally that year. 1940 First Old Town kayak is produced. Constructed of wood and canvas. 1965 Old Town Canoe initiates production of fiberglass canoes. 1968 Kayak production in full swing. US Team competes at world competition, using Old Town kayaks, improving their performance from previous years. 1966 Breakthrough R&D in fiberglass canoes wins Old Town the Grand Prize of the Society of Plastic Industries Reinforced Plastic Division. Selected for originality of application, design, utility, moldability and appearance. Over One Hundred Years of History Old Town, Maine has for centuries been the ancestral home of the Penobscot tribe and, in fact, derives its name as an acknowledgement of this proud heritage. Nestled on the edge of the Great North Woods amid the rapids, waterfalls and unforgiving boulders of the Penobscot River, here the tribe hunted, fished and built their sturdy birch bark canoes. And here, over 100 years ago, the Old Town Canoe Company was born. Inspired by the Penobscot’s watercraft, our first wood and canvas canoe was built by A.E. Wickett in 1898 behind the local entrepreneur George Gray’s hardware store. Made with an eye for detail and a passion for quality, it wasn’t long before Gray’s and Wickett’s canoes were selling like hotcakes. After brief periods as the Indian Old Town Canoe Company and Robertson Old Town Canoe Company, the firm was incorporated in 1903 as Old Town Canoe Co. After a strong run as the largest Canoe manufacturer in the world, Old Town made its first Kayak in 1940. By 1970 Old Town had won national awards for material innovation with its fiberglass boats and was the exclusive manufacturer of canoes and kayaks to the US Team. Since then Old Town has helped reshape the canoe and kayak industry by being the first to bring Royalex® and rotomolded plastic boats to market. Today Old Town continues to advance the canoe and kayak tradition through design and material innovation. 1971 Old Town introduces one of the first fiberglass specialty surf kayaks, ushering in a new sport. 2007 Advancing Tradition for Over 100 Years. 1972 Old Town introduces the first mass produced Royalex® canoe to the market. New canoes are developed, the first known as the Chipewayan 16’ (later known as the Camper.) 1984 Old Town introduces the Discovery in Crosslink3™, our 3-layer polyethylene, which was the first of its kind in the marketplace. Nov. 6, 1991 Display model canoe sells for 12k at auction. 1996 Old Town expands kayak line with the development of Polylink3™, our 3-layer kayak material. 2003 Old Town celebrates “the year of the one millionth boat” as we reach serial number 1,000,000 and commemorate the milestone with a special wood and fiberglass canoe. 1997-2000 Old Town acquires Ocean Kayak, Inc. to become the largest canoe and kayak manufacturer in the world. In 1999, Old Town adds 28,000 sq. ft. to meet increasing demand for canoes and kayaks. In 2000, Johnson Outdoors, Inc. is officially established. Old Town becomes a sister company to a family of quality paddling companies. 2006 Old Town leverages Necky® design expertise to create the Cayuga family of touring kayaks, in response to consumer demands. 2005 Old Town introduces paradigm shifting recreational kayak; the Dirigo, which quickly gained popularity to become one of the top-selling kayaks within the first year as well as winning multiple industry awards. Paddling Through The Past Tradition and technology have had a long and comfortable marriage at Old Town. In 1898 we built our first woodand-canvas canoe, a more durable, lower maintenance improvement on the Native American birch bark canoe that was its inspiration. We did the same thing with the kayak in 1940, rendering the traditional seal-skin design in more durable wood-and-canvas. The same spirit of innovation led us to introduce lightweight fiberglass versions of our kayaks and canoes in the 1950s and ‘60s. And it has continued into the 21st century, as we continually strive to advance the art of paddling through better designs and lighter, more durable materials, like today’s PolyLink3™, SuperLink3™, variable layer, and Advanced Composite Technology. As much as we look ahead, though, we always keep one eye on the past, continuing to be inspired by the best of classic boat-building traditions. Just some of the reasons today’s canoes and kayaks are unrivaled in their ability to put the paddler in touch with the rhythms of the water. Be it a still pond or river-paddling for fitness, fishing or just for fun, we bring you closer to the environment you’ve set out to enjoy. Here’s the basic information you need to help you make an informed decision on what type of boat is best for you. Do I Want a Canoe or a Kayak? Both are distinctly North American, and were created by indigenous people long before Europeans arrived. Bark and dugout canoes were used throughout the North American continent, and kayaks, covered with animal skins, had their beginnings in the icy Arctic and sub-Arctic waters along the coast. Today, the two boat styles overlap in some instances. Decked canoes and the large open cockpit of recreational kayaks have blurred the distinction that once existed. Now, the main distinction lies within the style of paddle used, and the position of the paddler within the boat. It is interesting to note that some native American tribes used double bladed paddles to propel their canoes, and single bladed paddles were occasionally used in kayaks, so this “grey area” has actually existed for centuries. In general, kayaks are lower and not as easily affected by windage. Using a double bladed kayak paddle also helps to keep the kayak pointed in a straight line, especially when paddling solo. To some, kayaks can feel a little confining, especially when wearing a spray skirt. Canoes on the other hand require a little more technical expertise to handle in wind or to keep in a straight line when paddling solo, and they can also handle bulkier loads when tripping, which makes them great for families. Every canoe and kayak is a compromise in design; compromises between how the boat tracks and ease of maneuverability, weight versus durability, speed versus stability, and so forth. The right balance of these and other factors is a purely personal choice and requires a bit of thought prior to making your purchase decision. Capacity The capacity of a canoe or kayak is defined as the amount of weight (including the paddler) which a boat can carry and still be safely operated. There are many different methods in use today to determine the maximum capacity of a boat. At Old Town, we believe that the optimum range for paddling one of our craft is determined by the type of paddling being done, the paddlers skill, and of course the boat design itself. We have calculated the Maximum Capacity rating of our closed deck boats (kayaks) in accordance with the American Boat and Yacht Council standards. In the case of canoes, we list the optimum paddling load range on our website and use the industry standard of 6” freeboard to determine the maximum capacity. Questions to Consider The questions you ask yourself to make this decision will serve you well when narrowing down your specific boat choices. So think through the what, why, where and with whom you will be paddling. For example, if you have dreams of an epic journey, remember that you will first need to build your skills. And remember, even with all of the advancements in canoe and kayak design, there is no boat that can overcome bad judgement, so make sure to be truthful with yourself when assessing your abilities and goals. • • • • • • What kind of paddling do you want to do? Simple relaxation, adrenaline rush, touring, fishing, or time out with family? Are you paddling solo or with someone? If the latter, who will you be paddling with? What is the average total weight you expect to carry? Factor in you, your partner and any gear. What is your skill level and that of your partner? Will you be travelling in long straight lines, or is maneuverability more important? What types of water will you paddle in? Open ocean, coastal, surf, slow or fast-moving rivers, rapids, lakes, etc. After you answer these questions, consider what is most important to you – size, durability, weight, looks and/or price – and buy accordingly. Old Town Canoe and Kayak has a selection of boats for most types of paddling and budgets. 2 Choosing the Kayak for You We’ve organized our line of kayaks into four distinct categories to help you decide which is right for you. Recreation User-friendly kayaks for those who just want to get out on the water. They are stable and easy to maneuver, making them ideal for quiet water paddling on lakes, ponds and class I rivers. Recreational Touring/Touring Versatile kayaks that offer good stability and easy tracking. The large open cockpits allow easy entry and exit. Kayaks in this category are designed to efficiently cover long distances and carry large amounts of gear. Tandem Our tandem kayaks are stable, maneuverable family fun boats designed for two people and sometimes even more. Ideal for all-around recreational use – paddling with a companion on lakes, ponds and flat rivers. Sporting These kayaks are specifically created with the sportsman/woman in mind. Lightweight and extremely stable, this category of kayaks is packed with features to make life easier and more enjoyable for its user. Here’s the basic information you need to help you make an informed decision on what type of kayak is best for you. BOW (Front) Length and Width Carrying Handle Hull Deck Hatch Cockpit Cord Deck Rigging LENGTH: As a rule of thumb, the longer the boat, the faster it will be. It will also track (go in a straight line) better. A shorter boat tends to be more maneuverable and is generally lighter and easier to carry. Our Recreational kayaks are on the short side, to give you more control and stability. Recreational Touring kayaks are longer, allowing for more speed and plenty of cargo space, with improved versatility. WIDTH: The width, or beam, of a kayak is its widest measurement, usually in the middle. In general, a wider craft is a bit slower but more stable. Fishermen and photographers prefer wider boats, while paddlers who like to go long distances choose narrower ones for efficiency and speed. Kayak Cross Section Cockpit Rim Cockpit Seat Cockpit Cord Deck Rigging The cross section refers to the shape of the sides and the bottom of the kayak. How the bottom is configured plays a big part in the stability of the kayak. Flat bottom kayaks are very stable in calmer waters but become less comfortable as the waves get larger. Shallow arch bottoms feel initially less stable but tend to be faster and are better behaved in unsettled water. V-bottoms improve tracking but may have less initial stability. The sides of the kayak also have importance. Some kayaks curve inward as they come up, creating a narrower beam at the deck. This enables the paddler to more easily reach the water while still having the stability of a wider kayak. Other kayaks have flared sides, meaning the beam increases the deeper it sits in the water providing more stability as the cargo weight increases. This design provides increased stability as the kayak is on its side or in unsettled water. Kayaks can also have straight sides which are a compromise between the two. Deck Hatch Shallow Arch Bottom V-Bottom Flat Bottom Carrying Handle Serial No. Location STERN (Rear) Flared Sides Straight Sides Materials Old Town has been a pioneer in innovative materials for canoes and kayaks that provide rigidity and resiliency, light weight and long life, attractive looks and affordable prices. See below to learn more about our full range of paddlesport materials for every purpose and every budget. Due to variables in the manufacturing process and materials, boat weights may vary +/- 5 lbs. Old Town pursues minimum boat weights without sacrificing strength, durability and safety. 4 Kayak Features and Benefits Extrasport® XtraComfort™ Outfitting System Seat Its ‘progressive cushioning effect’ makes this Extrasport® seat soft at first, then becoming more supportive for all-day paddling. The adjustments are easy to access to provide an unparalleled level of continuous, uninterrupted comfort. The “Outfitting System” in our touring and recreational touring models is complete with the addition of foam thigh braces to give you needed support and control during your day on the water. Space Hatch™ Our Space Hatch™ leads the market with its easy to open and close advanced cam latch and 120 degree hinge, which allows easy access to your gear, and a weather tight seal. Should the hatch accidentally open too wide, it will simply breakaway, rather than damaging the hinge. If this happens, just pop it back into place. CrossLock™ Hatch This hatch is simple to use and the CrossLock™ strapping system across the hatch offers continuous pressure on all parts of the durable cover to ensure a watertight seal – comparable to a neoprene cover topped with a hard shell. The extra thick sealing gasket accommodates surface imperfections and is “self seating” – so you won’t worry about leaky hatches again. Stabil-Form™ Hull This innovative hull design is a proven winner on the market by providing more efficient stability for our popular Dirigo and Cayuga kayaks as well as some of the more popular models of our sister company, Necky® Kayaks. Stability doesn’t mean “wide”, our design pulls volume further along the length of the boat for excellent stability. You’ll feel the benefits of this hull design in your arms and shoulders. It guarantees you a more efficient paddling experience. Variable Layer We created the technologically advanced material, Variable Layer, which is extremely durable and lighter than any singlelayer or three-layer polyethylene constructions on the market today. Enjoy the benefits this material allots you. Our success set off something of a local boom – by 1910, the town was hailing itself as the Canoe Center of the World, with 3,500 boats built in Old Town that year. Over the next several decades, Old Town Canoe thrived and operated at full capacity in its converted shoe factory near the banks of the Penobscot River. We reached a major landmark in 2004, with the construction of our one-millionth boat, which will reside permanently at our offices here in Old Town as a cherished reminder of our enduring commitment to our customers old and new, and for generations to come. To make things easier, we’ve organized our complete line of canoe models into four distinct categories based on how they function on the water, but if you have any trouble locating what you are looking for, please let us know: Classic Wood Old Town began its 100-year history building wood and canvas canoes, and we still make our Wood Classics today to capture the hand-crafted heritage that takes your canoeing experience back to its roots. Tripping / Expedition Expedition canoes are high-volume canoes designed for whitewater and/or carrying large loads. The hull is constructed for maneuverability, and the deep, flared ends help to maintain dryness. They are built to withstand heavy abuse. General / Family These canoes are perfect for people who want to paddle their local lake, pond or quiet river. They are suitable for a wide variety of on-water activities and though they don’t have performance features like more specialized canoes do, their Sporting Our Sporting canoes are designed for a variety of outdoor activities. These platform canoes offer high initial stability and are versatile enough to be paddled, rowed or motored. In fact, some have square sterns for mounting a motor. 12 The Canoe In Your Future Thinking about a new canoe? Here’s the basic information you need to help you make an informed decision on what type of canoe is best for you. BOW (Front) Deck Nameplate Gunwale Length and Width Length: As a rule of thumb, the longer the boat, the faster it will be. Typically, it will also have more cargo space, but they’re more difficult to handle in tight situations. Width: The width, or beam, of a canoe is its widest measurement, usually in the middle. Canoe widths are given in two measurements: at the gunwale and at the four-inch waterline. In general, a wider craft is a bit slower but more stable. Bottoms and Sides Bow Seat FLARED Flat Bottom boats offer great initial stability. That is, they feel very secure on calm water. They’re great for the sportsman and FLARED WITH TUMBLEHOME STRAIGHT TUMBLEHOME recreational paddler looking for steadiness. FLAT BOTTOM ROUND BOTTOM SHALLOW ARCH Round Bottom canoes are designed for speed and efficiency, with better secondary stability. They have the ability to balance on their side when leaned. Carrying Yoke Hull Aft Thwart Shallow Arch bottom canoes have less initial stability and good secondary stability. The sides of the canoe can have flare, tumblehome, or be straight. FLARED TUMBLEHOME STRAIGHT FLARED WITH TUMBLEHOME Flared sheds water well and increases secondary stability. Tumblehome gives a narrower beam at the gunwales and allows for easier paddling. Straight-sided canoes split the difference between the two. Flared with Tumblehome incorporates the best of both, giving good secondary stability and easy paddling. Stern Seat Rocker Serial No. Location STERN (Rear) The curve of the keel line (its bottom profile) from bow to stern is called rocker. A straight keel line has no rocker, providing exceptional tracking ability but lacking maneuverability. An extremely rockered keel line offers exceptional maneuverability but will not track well. Moderately rockered canoes are usually straight with a rise toward the ends. Most general recreational canoes have a moderate rocker. While the wood and canvas canoes’ rich history dates back over a century, they are hardly a thing of the past. Today there are a number of societies and associations dedicated to these boats and they remain a favorite among aficionados and select professionals. Throughout the century, hundreds of thousands of canoes have been produced here Dark Green Blue Red White Natural (Clear) at Old Town. The classic wood and canvas canoe is our heritage. It is what defines us. Our celebrated one-millionth boat, started in 2003 and completed in 2005, is a wood Fiberglass only and fiberglass model based on our traditional OTCA hull. All of our classic wood canoes are hand-crafted on forms that have been used for generations. As with any hand-crafted work of art, our canoes take time.
