Dear Kevin,
The Creek Week Planning Committee thanks Citrus Heights for generously supporting Creek Week
2014. The City’s $1,000.00 monetary contribution and $1,000.00 in-kind contribution of support
services and materials were important in making the event a success.
A Creek Week (April 4 – 12, 2014) summary report follows.
This year’s Splash Off was at Tetotem Park, Antelope. Dave Mitchell, Sunrise Recreation and Park
District Administrator, introduced our keynote speaker, Aaron Robertson, Chief Deputy Director of
California Department of Parks and Recreation. Aaron's address was heartfelt and very relevant. He
also welcomed sponsors and presented the Creek Week Steward award to Antelope High School
students for their native oak restoration work on Sierra Creek. He showed genuine interest in and
appreciation for their project. Another Splash Off highlight was the delicious food prepared by
Maryrose Barnhurst.
Creek Week events were well-publicized this year in a variety of media. Radio Disney ran
educational and entertaining spots. The Sacramento Bee ad was again in full color. Creek Week
articles appeared in neighborhood publications. As in years past, Creek Week brochures, posters and
bookmarks were available in public spaces such as libraries, community centers, park facilities and
schools.
New this year, Sacramento Area Creeks Council and the San Juan Unified School District partnered
in conducting our first art contest. The winners of the contest, 5th grade students at Skycrest
Elementary School in Citrus Heights, designed this year's Creek Week art.
Creek Week workshops and field trips were attended by over 100 adults and children. Activities
included outdoor investigations led by scientists, and outings led by knowledgeable volunteer
docents. Participation in these activities can make volunteer clean-up efforts more meaningful.
As you may recall, clean-up day landed on a beautiful spring day that was preceded by some heavy
rainfall. The week of rain storms created some interesting conditions for volunteers. High flows
made it too risky to get in or even close to the water in many locations. That meant garbage was left
on steep banks in the interest of safety. The high flows also washed much of the season’s garbage
accumulation out of the creeks and into the rivers, depriving volunteers of the opportunity to remove
and dispose of it. The storms also improved water quality.
2,000 volunteers worked along a total of 32 miles of waterways and helped clean a creek this year.
They gathered at 62 different locations. Statistics and highlights below:
o Close to 15 tons of garbage were removed from creeks in Sacramento, Citrus Heights,
Folsom, Rancho Cordova, Galt, Rio Linda and unincorporated Sacramento County.
o Electronic waste found by volunteers was brought to the Celebration for our first-ever EWaste recycling. 2,600 pounds of e-waste was collected for recycling.
o Volunteers also removed invasive plants. Himalayan blackberry, French broom and invasive
trees were removed to make room for native plants. Approximately 115 cubic yards of the
targeted invasive plants were removed by volunteers in Sacramento, Folsom and Citrus
Heights.
o For the third year, water quality testing was conducted at selected sites.
The afternoon Celebration at Carmichael Park gave volunteers the opportunity to celebrate their
accomplishments in a lovely setting. Great family entertainment from Radio Disney, fun activities,
barbeque, the Junk & Gunk contest and earth-friendly exhibits were enjoyed by all.
For the fifth year, donor generosity made funds available for the mini-grant program which
empowers teachers to teach students about their local creeks and the many benefits they provide.
Grants of up to $500 will help pay for field trip buses, programs and materials to give students an
outdoors, hands-on experience that takes their learning to a more concrete and meaningful level. We
are pleased to support creek and wetland education programs that will be delivered to Sacramento
County elementary and middle school students.
The continued success of Creek Week is credited, in very large part, to our loyal sponsors. The direct
benefits of the clean-up and the numerous benefits that result from Creek Week’s student and
general public education all help to preserve and protect Sacramento region creeks. Your support is
