• The penetration of rock, the breach of a mountainside,
brought a surge of soft, lukewarm water.
• The site of the Thermal Baths, located in Vals,
Switzerland, holds a memory of human’s play within the
waters since as early as 1500 to 1300 BCE. (an extremely
distant memory)
• This timelessness, or sense of encompassing the vastness
of time, is contained within the stone and the spring
that has persisted throughout history.

stone object set deep into the mountain.

The integration of waterproofing, insulation and expansion joints in the stone
mass of the building required a high level of complexity in the
invention of customized construction and work procedures. The
building looks simple. The complexity is hidden in the mass.
